Mourning The Loss Of A Genius And Gentleman

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- He had a way about him, whether he was coaching his players, or conducting an interview, or bouncing his grandkids off his knee or playing a round of golf with friends that defined Jim Johnson: Inviting, loving, demanding, respectful, generous. He was a man of men, someone who touched everyone whom he met. Jim Johnson, 68, passed away on Tuesday afternoon after a battle with cancer, news that shakes to the core all who knew him, his family, his loved ones.

You knew Johnson as a defensive wizard, a genius who for 22 NFL seasons and 10 with the Eagles dazzled offenses with his array of blitzes and unique combinations of personnel and strategies. I knew Johnson as a friend and a colleague who always had an open door, always had a hearty hello and who always gave it everything he had every single day.

That Johnson died on Tuesday was not a shock. He had, in fact, been ill for many months after a re-occurence of melanoma. Taking part in the post-draft mini-camp, wheeling around on his motorized golf cart, interacting with the players and the staff ... that was pure joy for Johnson. It was his final moment in the glory of the moment around the Eagles and it was something to cherish. He loved the game of football as much as anyone, and along with his family and his faith and his friends, built his life around those passions and dedications.

Johnson is to be remembered as a pioneer in the game of football. He attacked offenses from his unique perspective and wrote up on his chalkboard in his NovaCare Complex all of the different blitzes and names of defenses. The stories are legendary about how Johnson would sometimes think of a different wrinkle to his defense and jot down the notes on a dinner napkin, put it in his pocket and then bring the napkin to the office to bring it to life.

Andy Reid hired Johnson in 1999 because, well, he knew how difficult Johnson's defenses were. How do you go against a defense that changes on the fly, that lives to come from so many unpredictable angles and that has no apparent weaknesses? If you can't beat it, invite the coach to join your staff.

So that is what Johnson did, and for the decade to follow the Eagles enjoyed an unprecedented level of sustained defensive success. Year after year, no matter the personnel, the Eagles ranked among the best defenses in the league. As Reid built the Eagles into an NFL power, Johnson was right there alongside, not-so-quietly building a defense in his mold: Aggressive, passionate, intelligent and highly successful.

Johnson demanded that his players care about the game as much as he did. He lit into his players when they needed to be prodded, and he patted them on the shoulder pads when they deserved some love. More than anything else, Johnson earned the respect of every player he coached, whether or not that player made the roster. He gave his players a fair shake, no matter how talented they were.

Johnson leaves behind a loving immediate family and an Eagles family blessed to have known him. He was an honest man who was as comfortable sitting down and talking about his kids as he was talking about the "Okie" package. Football, family and friends. Those were the loves of Johnson's life, one that ended far too soon, one that lives on for the Eagles and the fans who admired what he brought to the table each and every week.

For those lucky enough to have met and call Johnson a friend or a co-worker, well, the memories will last a lifetime. How can you forget a man like Jim Johnson? Simply put, you don't. You don't ever forget him. Over the days and years ahead, this coaching staff and these players and all of those who have worked with Johnson will remember moments here and there about Johnson -- about his coaching, about his golf game, about the way he walked and talked and joked and approached his rich and varied life.

We will all miss Johnson, a man who set an example in life that all should follow in his death.

What if it was Peyton fightin dogs?? Are you serious?? Umm... let me think a sec, Peyton wouldn't ever fight dogs, cause, well... guys like Peyton DON'T do things like fight dogs. UPSTANDING citizens like Peyton (and guys like Donovan) don't fight dogs. Punks fight dogs so please don't ever mistake that fact again.

Again, R.I.P. Jim. On Vick, I think Jadakiss said it best.. "What if it was Peyton fightin dogs insteada mike vick?" I think its time he gets his chance, but it wont be with us. Im not as down on kolb as franky. On Maclin, its not his fault, its the system. But, I wish his agent and our FO could get an agreement in place so maclin can be here tomoro. This is an important night, I really expect maclin to be signed. Again, on Johnson, we are all gonna miss you. To his family, keep your head up and be happy for all the lives he has touched.

About the maclin situation, you all can dogg me out about this but i dont give a rats a!! about him(maclin)right now,I was for a good vet wr to come here anyway and still feeling that.I dont know who maclin or his agent think they are,They are dealing with the stingyist front office in the NFL and and by him just being a rookie and not here at practice its realy making it worse on his part.(off topic) and for all you vick haters out there stfu and let that man play, yea he did the crime and he did the time and everybody deserves a second chance,I bet if he was a white boy he would already be on a somebodys team at practice right now!!! hell,if he gonna be a back up,we need to bring him here for real because feely is ok but kolb is straight garbage and needs to go NOW!!People worried about peta,I say f*** peta if the man can make my team better, thet hell with what you think or say about vick. I got your back vick f*** those haters out there!!!!!

On top of this sad time for Eagle fans are goin' through, Maclin isn't at camp. Bunkley needs to talk to him cause he admitted missing camp time messed things up for him and that regretted doing it. Have Maclin return punts only this year, if even that, and have him watch the other receivers play this year. Let that p u $ $ y sit the bench even.

Nuuudlz, it's your boy Megatron. I completely agree with you about ESPN. Them F'n f @ g g 0 t $ showed no respect for coach JJ. When sportscenter came on, yesterday at 6:00pm, the first 30 minutes was about Favre and Plaxico Burress. ESPN can go to H 3 L L! F the ESPN crew!

Ironhead, I agree, it's a disgrace, however, I do hope the Eagles players and coaches are taking note as they prepare and fight even harder to make the philadelphia eagles the story of the year, giving JJ is deserved recognition along the way. FL, even on other sites, message boards are full of well wishes from other teams(rivals). Nice comments on the NFL article on JJ, (if you can find it amongst Favre and the convicts)

Nuuuudiz I don't no u or anybody else on this board personally, but I have to partially disagree with you. You said espn's coverage means nothin wut are you kiddin me ... if this were D Lebeau I could almost guarantee more coverage about him wit Brett Favre, on the same day as our belovefd Jim Johnson got! IT'S NOT THE COVERAGE THAT MAKE'S SOME OF OUR FANS MAD, BUT THE RECOGNITION OF A LEGEND WHO FRIGGIN DIED!!!

ESPN couldnt say anything worthy of Jim, and their coverage/negligence means nothing. Quit complaining, Eagles fans, and focus on what matters.

I believe this deserves a mention. In my own way of honoring JJ, I monitored all 3 comment boards yesterday relating to his passing. The condolonces by most of our rivals was respectful. The ones that said they hated JJ's defense bestowed a great honor in the sense that they meant they hated facing it because of it's difficulty to beat. Test tube baby made an appearance, and was he normal annoying self with his multiple posts, but he left the JJ passing situation alone. By my count, there was only one disrespectful idiot, and much respect paid by Cowboy, Giant, and Redskins fans alike. Of course, the outpouring of support by the Eagle's faithful has been overwhelming.

Jim Johnson will be missed. He was truly a great defensive coordinator. I was getting really mad last night when on ESPN they would mention him for ten seconds and then go back to talking about Brett Favre. It was getting old.
