McNabb's Contract Restructured

June 11, 2009 | Last Updated: 6/11/09 11:53 PM ET | Comments (14)

The Eagles announced Thursday evening that they have restructured the final two years of quarterback Donovan McNabb's contract. His current contract is set to expire after the 2010 season.

McNabb and head coach Andy Reid will be available to the media on Friday at 10 am in the NovaCare Complex auditorium.

"Donovan has played a large part of this team's success over the last 10 years," said Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie. "He has been a professional in every sense of the word."

"We are thrilled that this all worked out," said Eagles president Joe Banner. "He is a great football player, a great person, and someone who gives back to the community. We are lucky to have him in Philadelphia."

"The Philadelphia Eagles organization and the entire city of Philadelphia are fortunate to have a quarterback the caliber of Donovan McNabb," said Reid. "He has proven himself to be a talented player on the field, a caring member of the Philadelphia community, and a winner."

Entering his 11th season as an Eagle, McNabb is the franchise's all-time leader in passing yards (29,320), touchdown passes (194), attempts (4,303), and completions (2,534). He has led the Eagles to more regular season victories (82), and playoff appearances (7) than any other quarterback in team history.

The team's first round draft choice in 1999 (2nd overall), McNabb has compiled the lowest interception percentage in NFL history (2.09%, 90 interceptions in 4,303 attempts) and the 3rd best touchdown-to-interception ratio (2.16) in league history behind Tom Brady (2.29) and Steve Young (2.17).

McNabb, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, also holds the NFL record with 24 consecutive completions and is one of six players in league history with at least 25,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards. The others are: Randall Cunningham, Steve Young, Fran Tarkenton, Steve McNair and John Elway.

In 2008, McNabb led the Eagles to their highest scoring output in franchise history (416 points), while setting club records in yards (3,916), completions (345), and attempts (571). Along the way, he led the Eagles to their fifth appearance in the NFC Championship game since becoming a full-starter in 2000.

Off the field, The Donovan McNabb Foundation was established in 2000 in honor of McNabb's close family members who have been diagnosed with diabetes. The foundation raises awareness of diabetes through Donovan's position as a national spokesman for the American Diabetes Association. McNabb started his foundation so that he could help provide awareness and improve the lives of those who suffer from diabetes, as well as the families of those who have diabetes.

brianseagles08, are you a birds fan or a cowgirl, how about backing your team and not throwing the best QB this franchise has ever seen under the bus all for 1 half. He should have not been benched as Kolb gave up a few TD's for int's right? If we had a healthy running game and the normal McNabb we could have won that game.

Coach Reid made an error last year in benching McNabb in the Ravens game, but McNabb made the best of Reid's mistake and took it like a man. McNabb recovered and took the Eagles to the NFC Championship game. McNabb is the man in Philly and I truly believe the Eagles, with McNabb, will win it all before #5 retires as an Eagle.

McNabb deserves his new contract. He's the best Eagle QB of all-time. He only needs a SB championship for Philly and hopefully he will get one soon for himself and the city of Philly and the fans. Philly should appreciate having a great QB like Donovan. Without #5, the Eagles do not have a chance. GO EAGLES!!!

First to brianseagles08. Dude, get a clue! The game against Baltimore in which you mentioned was not over when Andy yanked McNabb! We were only down 10-0! It was a premature decision and that's what cost us that game! Not McNabb! He IS the best QB Philly has EVER seen and does not deserve all the bull**** some fans give him. I'm a huge Eagles fan and I love this guy. People need to stop hating on him because if you don't when his contract is up, he'll be gone! Give the guy some love and if we don't win realize it's not his fault! Blame it the front office. Jackson needs to perform like he did last season and hopefully Maclin lives up to his potential but where is our Boldin or even Ochocinco! We did lose Dawkins, which blows, but I really think our team is a better, more balanced squad this upcoming season. The keys in my opinion are going to be Westbrooks health and the development of our young recievers. Let's Go Eagles!!!!

McNabb has been one of the best Philly has known and, for the most part, has done it without great weapons at WR. With that said, I don't agree with handing one player additional millions while telling other players to suck wind. This has to aggravate the Sheldon situation and adds a little more bite to cheaping out on Dawk. As far as you Kolb bashers, why continue to prove how clueless you are? No QB will step in and look good without taking reps with the first team and preparing as a starter. Nobody knows whay he's got until that happens. Hopefully McNabb stays healthy and we don't have to find out.

5 is the best QB this team has ever seen so I am glad the chek book has been opened. He deserves it. Amen to the Kolk comment, he is worthless. I would rather have bo legged Leftwich, well maybe not but this guy has done done squat, even when he had the chance. College and pro's is where the boys are seperated from the men.

Could someone please explain to me why Corn Kolb over here is such a prized back up?!? he hasn't done crap to prove himself other than get drafted in the 2nd round. I hope McNabb stays around till he's 40 as long as he keeps his INT's down(unlike Farve). Just having Kolb on the roster creates termoil b/c of his high selection. I say we draft a new backup QB in like 2 years as long as McNabb is still here by then. McNabb is the best QB in Eagles history!!!

This has been the best off season in recent memory. The Eagles have improved the offensive line by making two great moves, they've strengthend the defensive back field with a few good moves, they had a strong draft (provided the rookies pan out as expected), they obtained a "Real" full back and now have made our QuarterBack very happy. This feels like a superbowl winning formula to me. Where are all the dopes who have labled the front office cheap and stupid?
