It's Official: Stewart Added To Coaching Staff

June 1, 2009 | Last Updated: 6/1/09 12:57 PM ET | Comments (6)

The Eagles announced they have named Brian Stewart special assistant to the defense.

Stewart, who will work primarily with the defensive secondary, joins the Eagles after a two-year stint as the defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys.

"Brian Stewart brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our football club," said head coach Andy Reid. ""He especially has a good understanding of the NFC East acquired during his time with the Cowboys. He'll be a nice addition to our coaching staff.""

During his two years in Dallas, the 44-year-old Stewart guided the Cowboys to two top-10 rankings in terms of yardage allowed. Last year, the Cowboys led the league with 59 sacks and ranked third in that category in 2007 with 46 sacks. In 2007, an NFL-best five Cowboys defenders earned Pro Bowl selections.

From 2004-06, Stewart served as the secondary coach with the San Diego Chargers. During his final season in San Diego, the Chargers ranked first in sacks (61) and 7th in scoring defense (18.9 points allowed per game). Stewart began his NFL coaching career as an assistant defensive backs coach with the Houston Texans (2002-03).

A former college cornerback and free safety with Northern Arizona and Santa Monica City College, Stewart served as an assistant coach on the collegiate level at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo (1993-94), Northern Arizona (1995), Missouri (1996, 1999-2000), San Jose State (1997-98), and Syracuse (2001).

I think this is a brilliant move. The ex-DC from another NFC East team in our defensive leadership can only be beneficial. And, who knows, Greg Ellis was just released from that other NFC East team- just a thought.

just because Demarcus Ware had a good season that means the DC was bad? besides he's coming in to help the defensive coasching staff not run it, the point of the stats used in the article were used to show that the defense under him was successful, the Eagles have a defensive system and foundation well in place. The addition of an assistant to the staff with experince as a coordinator at the NFL level can only be seen as a plus especially since is area of most experience was in need of another assistant with Sean McDermott acting as DC in Jim Johnson medical leave. P.S Get Well Soon Jim!

Didn't Demarcus Ware have like 20 of those sacks? I hardly think that has a lot to do with Defensive Coordination.

I dont know what it is but i feel really good about this move....yea yea he was fired by the cowboys but leading the league in 59 sacks last year and coming in third with 46 the year before...if we can add them stats to OUR THIRD RANKED Defense from last year we will be setting up something really special for next year...esp with his ability to work with OUR GREAT secondary and give aid in the absence of our beloved d coordinator Jim Johnson....i dont know what it is but i feel REALLY GOOD ABOUT THIS.
