Baker: The Unknown Hero Returns Home

Rashad Baker was already a hero to Eagles fans even though most have never heard of him.

On the final day of the 2008 regular season, the Oakland Raiders had just taken a 28-24 lead over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with 7:03 left in the game. The Bucs got the ball back and on the next play quarterback Jeff Garcia's pass intended for Antonio Bryant was intercepted by Baker. The Raiders tacked on a field goal and won the game 31-24. That win coupled with Chicago's loss to Houston allowed the Eagles to sneak into the playoffs after the 44-6 demolition of the Dallas Cowboys.

It was an even sweeter moment for Baker because he's a native of Camden, N.J. and everyone back home was thanking him. Now, Baker will get the chance to play in front of his family and friends after he signed a one-year deal with the Eagles on Wednesday.

"I knew (the Eagles) needed some (help) and they handled their business," Baker said about the interception. "After the game, I got a lot of phone calls and texts saying, 'Hey man, you helped us to get into the playoffs.' That was a great deal for me being from here."

The interception was one of a career-high three for Baker in 2008. Just as Chris Clemons parlayed the best season of his career in 2007 with Oakland to find a home in Philadelphia, Baker now hopes to do the same. The 27-year-old has played 52 games (four starts) with four different teams and has recorded 78 tackles, five interceptions, six passes defensed and one sack. Originally signed by the Bills as a rookie free agent in 2004 out of Tennessee, Baker also had stints in Minnesota and New England before landing with Oakland in 2007.

Baker's former college teammate and current Eagles linebacker Omar Gaither thinks he will have no problem picking up another scheme.

"Bake's a great player and a great guy," said Gaither. "He'll certainly bring leadership and shouldn't have any problem picking up our complicated schemes."

After losing Brian Dawkins and Sean Considine in free agency, the Eagles had to address the safety position. In the last week, they have added former Browns strong safety Sean Jones and now Baker. Knowing his roster spot is far from guaranteed, Baker looks forward to the battle.

"I definitely think it's about competition and that's one thing the Eagles want to bring in here, trying to fill the shoes of an (all-time) player in Brian Dawkins," Baker said. "Competition is everywhere and that's one thing I look forward to."

At Woodrow Wilson H.S. in Camden, Baker was a teammate of former Eagle Jamaal Green. As a wide receiver, Baker caught 37 passes for 730 yards as a senior to earn all-state honors. He was also a member of the school's nationally-ranked shuttle hurdles relay team that nearly broke the national high school record. Baker hopes the ballskills and speed he honed across the river from Lincoln Financial Field will help make a difference for the Eagles.

"You look at a player like (Baltimore's) Ed Reed who is able to cover from sideline to sideline and that's one of the things I try to do," Baker said. "You look at my interceptions and the plays I've made, they've almost been all on the sideline so I try to use speed to my advantage."

then baskett is still a work in the makings he has the ability to be something great just needs to run a little better routes and catch the ball on a more consistant basis but he was also an undrafted FA rookie we got from the vikings and he's come along way from that and is still young and improving. then you seemed to neglect our 3rd down machine in jason avant i always knew he could play like that judging from what i saw in his few atempts in the past and now that he was given the opportunity he has dont more then take advantage of it watch for an even bigger season out of him this year. then as for the LB core yeah they could use a little help but they too a making great strides and think the oldest one is only going into his 4th season so i think this eagles team has alot more in the tank for making SB runs then everyone would like to think

shortkid65 booker a good back up? look he did alright for miami and nothing for the eagles unless he does something spectacular this year i dont see the eagles holding onto booker so if we dont address the running back spot we wont a running game period this year i love west but do you honestly think he's gonna make it the whole season injury free on his own and curtis not getting the job done?? his first year with us he eclipsed the 1000 yard mark and didnt even play till the 2nd half of the season last and and even came back from his injury early..

the last thing we need is Knowshon moreno coming to philly, why would we waste a first round pick on a running back when we have 2 good runningbacks in Westbrook and Booker, if anything we should draft a WR. thats where we need help. Desean jackson will be even better than last season, but brown, basket and curtis arent getting the job done, we should trade our 21st overall pick and a 3rd rounder to move up and take Darrius Heyward-Bey or a Micheal Crabtree if he falls due to his surgury. another position we need to adress is our linebacker corp. We have a solid middle in Bradley and a LOLB in Gocong but we dont have a stand out at ROLB. A Brian Orakpo would be a good fit at this spot. if we are fortunate enough to have him on the board when our pick comes around.....please put your imput

if we didnt resign tra thomas because of his age why would we sign pace? unless pace took a contract for under 3mill garenteed and was loaded with bonus's on his performance. but i dont really see us taking a LT in the first round(i would like it to happen though) because heremans is most likely going to swing out and cole or max will be LG... and from what i have heard is that the eagles and the cards may already be in talks and the problem is the right price, i.e. which first round pick we give up.. also we just need to get a TE later in the draft. oh and from what i heard is that if the boldin trade goes down it'll be on draft day or a little before.

We will never sign Pace. His health is a concern and well he's just old. Your much better going with a LT via the draft. Not necessarily the first round cause there is plenty of depth at the position. I'm all for Moreno coming to Philly but we'll just have to wait and see what the front office does.

i feel what everybody says on the comments..ima die hard philly fan to tha core no matter what stupid decisions they do lol celek is not that great of a blocker but he's a real great talent and has a great future cause he's going to improve..tha fact of matter is that lj smith was bummin it up and caught tha injury bug which made him alittle garbage and not tha lj we use to know so he had to go.i dont care what anybody says but tha eagles has something really good cookin up right now and hopefully they would follow through it..one thing you should know about us philadelphians is we have tha most pride and dont give up..we have 12 picks and great cap ability which put us at tha top!were in a position to sign orlando pace, drafting tha runningback from uga..tha big tight end who can block and also tha biggest thing we need to do is trade for boldin..he would fit perfect in our offense!!!

All you guys are looking into these moves way too much. Were ot that bad off. Every year I question the moves that the FO make and think that we are doomed, but somehow we do fine. The draft will fill a couple voids. Possibly an OT at #21 to add depth, WR at #28 (possibly Kenny Britt out of Rutgers, he's a T.O. without the attitude, perfect compliment to D Jack), and a big RB in the 2nd round (Rashad Jennings out of Liberty, 6'1" 230lbs., perfect to take the load off B West). I don't think the TE position requires much attention, Celek is great and he will learn to block better.

just adding my thoughts on the situation i like pettigrew and would love him to be an eagle hes just to good to really pass up but if we pick up a wr, rb or ot that would be ok too because there is a sleeper te i like in this draft named jared cook at 6'5 200 something pounds lol he used to play wr and ran a 4.4 40 time had the furthest broad jump and as for the vertical it wasnt high enough for him his hand went like 2 inches above the highest peg or whatever those are in his college films he's apparently a decent blocker which can be improved on greatly with the help of NFL coaches and he's got more than decent hands who ever gets him gets a steal cuz i believe he will fall to at least the 3rd round

we dont need to use a high pick on a te, we need to just take the best one available in the 4th-5th round

grim, i do break down tape and what im seeing is that celek is good, he is decent at blocking and a good recieving tight end, plus he makes plays in the clutch. for a self proclaimed "analyst" you dont know anything. by the way all i do is play football, watch espn, keep tabs on the eagles, and i break down film. oh in your film studies have you figured out the type of blocking scheme we use? both run and pass? and have you noticed the seemingly random times we but westbrook in the slot with buckhalter in the backfield and the 3 plays we run outta that? also did you notice how as the season progress that runyans abilities dropped almost to the point he couldnt walk but yet he was effective by pure technique? huh did you "film analyzing" skills show you all that

We target a blocking TE I like Pettigrew or Shawn Nelson from southern miss

Lol I think it funny this coming from a guy who only watches the games on tv and never rewatches tape to study and break it down you look through the archives on here my views are well respected and looked highly of including on this topic have have many conversations about te position

your the idiot pal. you said " If McNabb could only throw a short 5 yard pass would that be ok" now if he completed them i would take it. now when they stack the box like that you hit them deep after a pump fake in celeks direction. and good for you, you can announce the special olymics since you obviously dont have the faintest clue of what your talking about.

your an idiot defences would adapt and put everyone in that 5 yards so he couldnt do it. so in celeks cause you blitz his side cause he cant handle it which happened in the playoffs
