Mikell: We Can Fill The Leadership Void

By: CHRIS McPHERSON

After the Arizona Cardinals marched 80 yards down the field on the opening drive of the NFC Championship Game to take an early 7-0 lead, strong safety Quintin Mikell was livid when he came to the sidelines.

Frustrated with his teammates' performance, he let his feelings be known. Free safety Brian Dawkins went over to Mikell and told him to calm down. He made him realize that it was only the opening drive and there was still a lot of football to be played. And just like that, like he has many times in the past, Mikell was able to absorb another nugget of wisdom from Dawkins.

What Mikell couldn't have ever realized at that point is that it would be the final time he would rely on Dawkins as a teammate. Mikell was visiting his alma mater, Boise State, over the weekend when he learned through his agent that Dawkins had signed a five-year deal with Denver. After six seasons together, as Mikell climbed the ladder from rookie free agent to special teams ace to second-team All-Pro safety, the man who served as the role model and mentor to Mikell will no longer be just a few lockers down.

"I feel like I've learned so much from him, but I feel like no one is ever done learning," Mikell said by telephone on Monday. "When you are done learning, you're dead."

Mikell talked to Dawkins on Sunday and admitted that he's "grieving over the shock of losing someone important." But Mikell realizes that it's now time to take everything he learned from Dawkins and teach and share those experiences with his teammates.

"I feel like I'm ready to take on a bigger role as a leader. I have to be," Mikell said. "You will never be able to replace what he did. I feel like with us having a committee of people who can set examples, who can put people in the right place that we can get the job done."

Mikell specifically pointed to cornerback Sheldon Brown who has the locker right next to him as one of the key people who can assume a bigger leadership role in the locker room.

"I believe Sheldon can be a great leader. I've learned a lot from Dawk, but I've also learned a lot from Sheldon," Mikell said. "You don't have to be the oldest one on the team to be a leader. Stewart (Bradley) can step in and say something. That's how you put together a team that wins. You have everyone."

One of the biggest signs that Mikell is ready to assume the bigger leadership role is the praise he heaped upon Quintin Demps. As of now, the second-year safety is the only other safety on the roster and could very well be called upon to play a much bigger role on defense in 2009. Mikell admits that even if the Eagles bolster the depth at the safety position, it is obvious that Demps won't have the comfort of watching and learning from the sidelines.

"He has to have the mindset that he's going to step in and he has to grow up fast," Mikell said. "He's not going to have the luxury that I had of being able to sit back and watch and grow. That will be tough on him, but at the same time he has a tremendous amount of talent. His upside is huge. He has good size, tremendous speed. He can make plays on the ball. He has the swagger. He has the right mindset so to speak ... He can't let the pressure get to him. He can't get caught up in trying to be Dawk or trying to replace Dawk. He just has to be himself. And as long as he understands that and comes to work and puts his boots on and gets to work, he's going to be a great player."

The same goes for Mikell. He has to realize that he's not alone in shouldering an expanded leadership role. No one imagined he would have carved out this nice a career for himself when he was a rookie free agent in 2003. There's no reason to doubt him now.

The Eagles organization is so f***ing dumb if this was the patriots there is no way there gonna let a guy that has such an impact on your team go. Thats why we cant win championships because they make stupid decesions and all they can say is well we thought. Do what ever it takes to get the damn job done. NO EXCUSES, and they still havnt address the wide reciever position i guess there gonna draft a rookie and hope he will be ready to really contribute in the next 4 years. MacNabb isnt getting any younger.

Mikel is solid...demps fubard a few plays this season...Lito let a few just run the f&^K by him...so we let dawk go..and went after a cripple???(Springs)WTF were we thinking!!! FO ...go to denver and Smuggle Dawkins back over Philly lines! DO IT!! DOOOOOOOO It! *grin* Now litos a jet...GOOD! let them deal with his bad wheels! we let Consi go..OK i can live with that! demps starting at Saftey Scares me to hell! Demps IMHO needed another year or two under Dawk. Learn where to be..and where NOT to be caught. But what can ya do eh! We'll be needing a really good offense this year because our D wont be keeping it low in the first part of the season.Itll take a while for demps to get up to speed at FS.

If we see something in Demps why was Springs asked about playing Safety by Johnson? Start Demps "if we see something in him" get a Safety in the draft if the FO have all these "BIG SECRETIVE PLANS" We went from a few tweaks here and there to having to address the RB,FB,TE,OL,CB & S positions not to mention a SOLID back up QB!

Yes i understand that we lost dawkins hell be sorely missed but the fact is we got to get over it in my opinion the fo sees something in demps that we dont see or has some kind of plans that we dont know about yet i think the bringing in springs is a smart move we need depth at that spot and he can give us that and i think we should address all our other problem in the draft and maybe a nother free agent signing or two

Ooooooooooooooh NOW WE CAN FILL THE LEADERSHIP VOID! Last time I checked it was Dawk talking it up on the sidelines and in the game while other players looked baffled, smiling, and joking around on the sideline.....I really hope it can be filled, because that's some BIG shoes to fit! Now I see we're looking at Springs, who's 34 years young? I THOUGHT by us leaving Dawk hanging that we were trying to go YOUNGER at the position....why didn't we keep Lito and move Brown to Safety?! YOU F'ing KIDDIN' ME.............

Sheldon Brown will be able to deliver as a leader but the GURU is GONE. Do not forget that that our boy S.B. has contract issues as well...

yeah, here it is......the Dawk-man will sorely be missed, but life goes on.....time for Mikell, Demps and the other guys to step up to the plate and really kick butt (which I'm confident they will).....I agree, the FO screwed up big time when Dawkins walked, but hey, whaddya gonna do, we can piss and moan about it, or get over it and deal with the situation!! As for Brian Dawkins, best of luck with your new team.

To make a long long story short. We were only a tweak away from going to the Superbowl. I posted a comment that I probably would not watch the Birds THIS year after 25 years die-hard. That's not really the right direction to go as a fan/team supporter. I have just decided to spend about $100 less that would go directly to the FO, ie., food and merchandise at games. Can we all agree to spend less?

were just about through. Yes, he has lost a step but he still made it to the pro-bowl, sealed two games for us (ie.,Pittsburgh and the hit on Peterson against the Vikings)and made the players around him better and more focused. That is not even counting what this does to the players psyches, the fans who buy their "product" or the community. This is strictly a business for them. The FO certainly did not lose any sleep after the championship game like US.

I'm trying to look at the Dawkins situation as objectively as possible but it still doesn't add up. The eagles are between $40-50 mil under the salary cap. If they didn't try to low-ball him they would have never needed to pay him $7 or 9 mil like Denver (only counting guaranteed $$). They likely would have been able to sign him for at most$5 mil for two years before free agency realizing they MAY only get one year out of him which wouldn't have broke the bank for the extra year. This is a different situation than some of the other team leaders that were let go in the past since their playing days

pds-heat, how bout the fans of the city deserve more then what the front office gives us? how bout its always the same old line coming out of andy reid's fat mouth, "we can win with the current talent we have". i'm still waiting to see that come true. they are letting go of some core guys that deserve more and better treatment. the front office brings in guys who are injured or injury prone and give them multi-year deals. enough is enough.....maybe when the current coach, front office, and owner are all gone, then maybe the fans will come back. jeff lurie needs to grow a pair of balls and clean house. reid's coaching ability sucks...his play callin sucks, and well he just sucks. the only thing i can promise you of the upcoming season is that fatty reid gains another 200 pounds, and we are left yet again with a ****ty team!

i like mikell, and i hope he can step up, but now he has to worry about demps back there with him (if they move him up the depth chart). i don't want to see brown go as we could use draft picks for boldin. i DONT want to see springs come in here. he's old and injury prone. you let go of b dawk because of his age, but yet want to bring in a cb who sucks? yup the FO logic is obvious...nothing more then a bunch of idiots!

A few days ago I suggested that Sheldon Brown could and perhaps should fill some of the leadership void left By the departure of Dawk... A few people (not many) acted like I was crazy (or even a little stupid) for even suggesting it. Now Q is saying it I bet nobody jumps on him about it.

You all need to stop being suck babies. Yes, the FO letting a player go of Dawkins caliber when we were the number 3 ranked defense is undeniably risky, but for anyone (Inswanger) to call themselves an Eagles fan and say they're going to ROOT FOR DENVER?!? You're rediculous. I've been high on Mikell for a while, no he won't be the same, no Demps won't be the same, NOBODY will be the same, but suck it up and continue rooting for your team! While your rooting for the broncos, why don't you just root for Dallas! Go Birds!

i love bein an eagles fan more than just about anything. im from the midwest and ill shoot someone for dissing the eagles, but now they deserve it. i understand that dawkins is 35, i understand that he probubly aint as good as he used to be, but he is STILL one of the best safteys in football and now we have to stomach watching him play in a denver uniform. when denver comes to philly it will be the first time i have ever rooted against the eagles because dawkins can still play and i hope he kills the eagles when he plays us to show our DUMB front office wrong.

more and more i think the problem is not the front office but the ownership. Because the eagles are the cheapest franchise in the nfl. even the pats got moss and welker last year. I can't imagine that the gm is just determined to not spend money. That type of thing usually comes from up to. Honestly the front office has done a great job of hiring b-rate talent for c-rate prices. And Andy Reid and Jim Johnson have always done a good job of maximizing what little talent they had. I have been as critical as anyone of the eagles management but more and more it seems like their hands are tied.

I will never give up on my team but for real letting DAWKINS GO WAS DUMB. This was a BIG mistake. We play denver this year in philly so we shall see how that goes. I really want this to be OUR YEAR and dawkins deserved his SB. Its still early so lets just hope for the best.

Of the eagles will be ok. This is not how they will play next season. Although, we didn't deserve to be in the playoffs last season and now we are getting worse... but thats besides the point. This is about losing a family member in BDawk and if you don't know what I mean by "family member" then you are not a true fan. F the front office. They are going to the same thing to Mcnabb. They wont give him an extension because he is old in there eyes and will command to much money. So he will go somewhere else and everyone will think it was #5's greed. F the FO. BOYCOTT EAGLES MERCHADISE. what good is cap room when you have no talent. Any team can have cap room when they sign crap talent.

Quintin Mikell is truly incredible. Nothing short of it. He will step up and be the leader that this team now needs. But of course the team needs to get a back-up safety or two. PhillySince90, good choice in Sean Smith. That guy is absolutely incredible. Great covering skills and amazing hands. Just search sean smith on youtube and you'll find his one handed pick against Wyoming. The FO have to take this guy as soon as possible. He might go in the first round so if he's there on pick 28, snatch him. I am truly excited for the coming season. The d will be even better, and offense is there, something just needs to click.

The only good thing we've done so far is sign andrews and get rid of that **** lito sheppard. Dawk was smart and got out of here cause he knows the he won't win a super bowl here. Might as well take the money and try your luck in denver. Our D will be fine no worries there. but the O on the other hand... i really hope reggie brown and hank baskett are not on the field next year because i can't stand watching either one of them. Joe Banner should be shot. We'll just sit back and watch all these other teams get better as we sit here satisfied with another failed attempt at a super bowl ring. We need boldin and a RB with our first pick, hopefully beanie. But don't bet on either of those two things happening

As I sit at my desk at work with my fingers crossed hoping to hear some good news regarding the Eagles and Free Agency, I am growing more and more frustrated with the Eagles Front Office. Hire someone with enough sense to counter ANY offer made to a player like B-Dawk to keep him with the team he wanted to finish his career with. Also, why not go after Houshmazadeh before Seattle got him? We need a tall touchdown threatening receiver to throw those end-zone fade-routes to and trust him to come down with the ball. Why not snatch up Marvin Harrison? He and McNabb had great chemistry in college and he is a poised Veteran who can add some talent to the receiving corp. Don't get me wrong, Action-Jackson is the man, but his talents need to be matched on the other end of the field. We need to make some improvements to get to the promise land!!! We are in the toughest division in football hands-down!!! I want Marvin Harrison and draft Beanie Wells!!!
