Reid Knows Effects Of Bye Week; Andrews Update

If there's any current coach in football who understands the benefits of a first-week playoff bye, it's Andy Reid.

In his seven career playoff appearances as coach, Reid's led his Eagles to three first-round byes. In all three seasons (2002-2004), he reached the NFC Championship game, including reaching the Super Bowl in 2004. In the other four playoff appearances, in which Reid has won all of his wild card matchups, he's advanced to just one title game (2001). So yes, Reid remains undefeated in playoff openers as Philadelphia's head honcho, regardless of whether he had the bye week or not. But that week of rest, too, sure has gone a long way.

Still, he'll have another chance to advance to the NFC championship game this Sunday, when the Eagles travel to Giants Stadium to battle defending Super Bowl champion New York. This time, it's the Giants benefitting from home-field advantage and a bye, a luxury they couldn't enjoy on their way to a title in 2007.

Head coach Andy Reid improved to 9-6 in the playoffs as a head coach

But the last time they did, in 2000, they rode it all the way to Super Bowl XXXV – coincidentally, also in Tampa, Fla.

"One of the advantages of having time off is that you give your guys an opportunity to rest, particularly the injured guys," Reid said. "But old trends show that that mattered, and the new trends show that that doesn't matter. So, who knows?"

Well, for one, the Giants. That 2000 squad did take its home-field advantage into the big game, but last year's championship team followed a far more treacherous path. As a fifth seed, the Giants caught hot at the right time and pummeled their way through three visiting stadiums, then only managed to pull the biggest upset in the history of the sport in Super Bowl XLII. Aside from the overtly dramatic, the Steelers took a likewise path to Super Bowl XL.

But this year's Giants should surely benefit. They lost three of their last four to close out the regular season, and getting 18-wheeler tailback Brandon Jacobs healthy is of paramount importance. With Jacobs banged up and ineffective in Week 14, the Eagles were able to completely control the line of scrimmage at Giants Stadium in the teams' last meeting. But a healthy Jacobs could mean a totally different story.

So, yeah, Reid was pretty much dead on. The only trend recently is that trends in terms of playoff seeding don't exist.

It's up to the Eagles, now, to try to make it all the way but this time around as the sixth seed in the NFC.

"I think (the Giants) will be as good as ever this weekend, and I would expect a knock-down-drag-out NFC East brawl," Reid said. "And they will be ready and we'll be ready."

INJURY NOTES: Reid updated the status of Pro Bowl guard Shawn Andrews, saying that Andrews is flying out to see his specialist in Marina Del Rey, Calif., Monday for a check-up on his surgically repaired back.

Reid would not offer any specifics, but did say there was a chance Andrews could return to practice as soon as this week.

"We'll see what the doctor says," Reid said. "If he OK's it, then we would allow him to get back out and start practicing. He's been doing a lot of cardio work, so that part of being in shape won't be a problem. The actual football shape, we'd have to let him kind of start off slow and get back in the swing of it."

Reid also said defensive end Victor Abiamiri is seeing a foot specialist to determine the progress of his Lis Franc sprain. Abiamiri has missed the last three games.

"It's just a recheck to see where he's at," Reid said. "We'd like to get him back out there practicing."

Hmm...all-pro has a chance to get back in front of BWest & Buck...you guys are nuts! Get Andrews back in there if he shows he's ready in practice, duh!? He KNOWS what he's doing/has proven he does it well/knows the giants- plus Cole would be a great back-up. Andrews has been kind of a mystery, I know, but he's been a dominant performer...don't count him out yet! If he returned, our O line is better.

Andrews should just wait for next season, Cole is doing fine for the moment. just let Andrews come back next season at 100 percent. the eagles need to focus on the giants for the moment. FLY EAGLES FLY ON THE ROAD TO VICOTRY, LETS BRING THT CHAMPIONSHIP HOME

Sooo not to say that I agree with josh07021995, but you guys are grossly misunderstanding what he's saying. He's not saying get rid of Westbrook in exchange for Brandon Jacobs. Why would he talk about getting Lorenzo Neal for a year to help Westbrook if he was talking about getting rid of Westbrook? All he's saying is get "a" Brandon Jacobs FOR Westbrook... a.k.a. a big bruising change-of-pace RB... the Lendale White to Chris Johnson, to compliment Westbrook not replace him. AND he's not saying trade McNabb for a wide receiver either, he's saying get a wide receiver FOR McNabb... as in, to throw to. Not a trade. Maybe try reading more carefully before ripping into people. But I also have to disagree with Josh in that WR is not a priority at this time, and Lorenzo Neal is a beast but we need someone who would be with us a few seasons at FB with whom Westbrook could build a rapport.

The EAGLES vs The GIANTS would need to play perfect, MacNabb would need to throw fast and acurate, the receivers would need to catch all their balls, more screen passes to Westbrook and Buckhalter they seem to run better on their passings and they hardly drop the balls. Defense would need to STOP the run with hard hits, create fumbles frustrate them! put A LOT of pressure on Eli, make him make mistakes. GO EAGLES FLY, THIS SUNDAY HI!!

I think Nick Cole has been doing a solid job, but then again we might be giving him some extra help. I'd love Big Kid to come in and start pushing people around, but you can't help but question with almost a whole season off. I'd love to see him come back in Pro Bowl form though... it could only help. Another guy to rotate in on the line can't hurt either. In closing, man am I happy josh down there isn't running the team.

Max and Nick Cole have played better than anyone could have expected, but the reaston B-West hasn't had a Pro Bowl season is because he's been missing Shawn Andrews and hasn't had an at least average fullback. If you want Westy to do better, Andy should go out and sign Lorenzo Neal to a one year deal if he doesn't retire. Also, get Brandon Jacobs for Westbrook and Get a wide reciever for Mac-5. And make sure it's T.J. or Antonio Bryant for a cheap price. or both.

i dont think andrews can come back n be a huge factor as he can when hes fully rehabilitated which i think will be for next season. I wish we had andrews cuz we could run behind him all day but max n nick have played well this year, not pro bowl level like andrews but our line has barely let mcnabb to get touched

We also couldn't run the ball all day. Nick Cole blocking for us on that screen was great but Andrews is dominant when right. If theres a chance to get him back in there we have to exhaust every option to do so

Am I the only one reading this wondering why? Nick Cole blocked two people on the way to Westbrook's touchdown. Let Andrews finish his rehab and let's win the Super Bowl with the team as is. GO EAGLES!!!
