McNabb To Start Vs. Arizona

Donovan McNabb will be the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles when they host the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night.

"I'd like to address the quarterback situation right off," head coach Andy Reid said at the opening of his press conference on Monday. "Donovan McNabb will be our starting quarterback in the Arizona game on Thursday. I mentioned this (Sunday); you have to take a step back to step forward in a positive way, and Donovan will do that."

After deciding to bench McNabb at halftime of Sunday's 36-7 loss to the Ravens, Reid chose to name McNabb as the starter over second-year quarterback Kevin Kolb.

Head coach Andy Reid explains why Donovan McNabb will start Thursday night

Reid said that McNabb will not be on any sort of short leash and that he shouldn't start looking over his shoulder. In fact, when Reid was pressed as to whether McNabb would be the starting quarterback for the rest of the season he said, "If I thought different, then I would start the other guy.

"Donovan's going out to play. That's what he's doing. Like I said, sometimes it's good to step back and look at things from a little different angle. I expect him to go out and play his heart out."

Reid thinks that if anybody can rebound from this type of situation, it's McNabb. Whether or not Reid is right remains to be seen.

"I think I know Donovan McNabb better than anybody in this room," Reid said. "I know that six turnovers, that's not Donovan McNabb. That's not him. That's not his game. That's no part of his game. You back up an inch, you evaluate it and you should be able to step forward."

The Eagles have committed nine turnovers in the last two games, with McNabb playing a part in seven of them. The Eagles have only scored one offensive touchdown in the past two games. On Sunday against the Ravens, McNabb was 8-of-18 for 59 yards with two interceptions and a lost fumble. In the second half of the game, Kolb was 10-of-23 for 73 yards and a pair of interceptions. Their combined QB rating was 12.5.

"This has nothing to do with Kolb's performance or Donovan's performance," Reid said of his decision. "I think it was the right thing to do. I would not change my decision on that, on what I did (Sunday). Obviously, we have to do a better job with turnovers. Nine turnovers in two games is ridiculous."

Reid said it was important for the team to move past the Ravens game with Sunday's game against the NFC West-leading Cardinals just three days away.

"It's important that, as much as we want to dwell on this game, that's not going to happen," Reid said. "We're going to move on. We're going to learn from it and move on."

Reid said the team as a whole needed to show improvement down the stretch, no matter who is at quarterback.

"I know I need to coach better, Donovan needs to play better and the guys around Donovan need to play better," Reid said.

As far as not telling McNabb that he was being benched, Reid said it was no big deal. Reid has always had the position coaches inform particular players that they were being benched and that he spoke with McNabb after the game.

"That's how we do it. The coach that coaches that player, he tells them and I address it afterwards," Reid said. "And that's how it goes.

"I talked to him afterward, as I did the other quarterback, and that's the way I went about doing it. At that particular time, you're in a tight time situation and you're trying to put things together for the second half. That's how you go about doing it. So, it's not a matter of disrespecting Donovan or any other player for that matter. It's what you do. That's why they have coaches, to do those things."

Reid said he expects McNabb to snap out of his slump.

"I've been around Donovan a long time," Reid said. "I trust that he'll get his part right and the guys around him (right)."

Ahhh yes, good old Buddy Ball! His defense was punishing! Remember the bodybag game? Ouch! That's what we need is some of that hard hitting, balls to the wall football tomorrow. I think our D has done a pretty good job this year keeping us in games, other than last week(can you blame them), and will give us a good chance to win tomorrow. The Cards don't do very well coming east either. E-A-G-L-E-S!!!!!

Congrats bro! I know exactly how you feel. I only did 4 years in the Army from 91-95, but it's a strange feeling leaving behind what you came to know as your life for so long. Did you spend any time in SWA? I did two tours in Dhahran S.A. with a patriot mission battalion. You'll always have your military pride and brother hood with everyone who has served. Good luck to you, and as for tomorrow.....GO McNabb!!!!!!

timotoad. i had my first taste of Eagles football during the pre-Vermeil years when fans only went to games to boo. like you I have seen some bad teams take the field and it was only in the late seventies when we finally got our act together. then we went through the post Vermeil downs in the Campbell/ Kottite years when we couldn't buy a win. When Ryan came along he was the fire we needed to get back to the playoffs. Then there was Ray Rhodes who enherited a team with so much talent but couldn't get them to play together. the post 90's Eagles fan has been spoiled to the point where we expect miracles sometimes from a team with average talent. then we blame the QB for the losses and receivers who aren't helping him by not catching the ball. DMAC is only playing with the hand he's been dealt. btw timotoad i will be retiring from the Navy in 9 days.

Dwesson10, thanks for acknowledging my service. I honestly think everyone should serve in some form or another after high school. It's the way most countries are. And yes, these fans are probably too young to remember all the years of suffering. They were raised with the Eagles being a rising contender and then going to the SB. I think most of us couldn't even believe that we made it back to the SB after so long. For 20 years the only glimps of hope we saw was Randall and the D of the early 90's. Unfortunately the combination of bad luck and injuries thwarted the success of that team. Now here we are again. I'll be pullin for McNabb to play out of his head Thursday! GO BIRDS, the bald headed ones that is!!!

timotoad. like you I was born and raised in Philly and am currently serving in the military. I have been an Eagles fan for 33 years and have supported this team through some very, very tough times. all those who "fans" who are crying for McNabb to go obviously don't remember the years between having JAWS at QB and having Randall at QB. They probably don't remember the years after Randall was let go and McNabb arrived. our team sucked during those transitions. ill say it again be careful what u ask for.

Thanks eagles_fan and combatvampire, why would you hate on your own players. Especially the ones that have put up with all of Philly's BS. Like I said below, you all will miss this team we have now when you realize how hard it is to rebuild. Anyone that says down with McNabb is an idiot. Wake up!

You know I sit here and read most of you raging on DMAC, How bout raging on the sorry a** WR core we have. Dont get me wrong I like some of the guy's we have but not as #1 and #2. You DMAC haters got you wish and he got pulled, and we did so much better. DMac is the best QB we have had and am going to say ever have because if they arent willing to spend money on a WR do you think they will do it with a new QB?

Wow u Philly fans are freakin stupid... U think gettin rid of McNabb solves all our problems huh... Well then get rid of em put in Kolb see how u do next year without McNabb because for 9 of his 10 years here he never had a good WR to throw to and still as be awesome. What we really need is to get him that good WR this off season give him another shot wit lets say Chad Johnson or T.J since one of them at least are leavin CIN. Also we run the ball lik 15 times a game and throw 30 that is no balance and of course when u are throwing 30 times a game defenses kno they dont got to worry about the run so they just defend the pass. McNabb should b our QB but if i was him i wuld want to leave cuz u all treat him lik ****!

Did I mention that my friends and I were doing dances of joy around the living room when McNabb finally got benched? We had the Kolb cheer going, and we're ok with him stinking, because thats what rookies do, until they learn to relax and learn from there mistakes. Reid FINAALY did the right thing for once, then today he went back to being... well, Reid. Reid will go down with his McNabb ship. Shame.

McNabb lost me when he choked in the SB in a very winable game. I knew then that he would never win it for us - and the fact that he's done nothing since, proves that he's overrated. It amazes me that his rep from 2000-2004 still carries him, because he's a shell of his former self. Don't believe me though, look at his number 2005-2008. Just awful. Top 3 QB??? Not even close. BTW, thatphillymofo, did you go to school? You write like my 7 year old. And timotoad, about 90% of my firends in the NE agree with me that McNabb is a choke artist, and the Kolb regime should start now. So I don't know what Philly fans you hang out with. You're stuck in the past man, loyal to a guy that will take his millions when he leaves here and never look back. You must be Reid's son, huh. I should have known. You must be to be so blindly loyal, because you sure don't know Eagles football. And EHernandez, we all know Garcia wasn't great long term - but he would have been a great short term fix last year, and Kolb could have started this year. Just look at Flacco, Matt Ryan, Quinn - there's plenty of young QBs learning, growing, and making a difference. Yet you want to hang on to the most Overrated QB in the NFL? They should have kept TO and traded McNabb. I don't like TO as a person at all 0 but the boy can play. And in my NFL book, being a player is what wins SBs. McNabb can't play. He's proven that for 4 years. And painfully enough, we'll have to watch it again Thurs. God help us! I'll keep my fingers crossed that Andy and you sold out McNabb fans see the light and that Kolb gets his shot this year. Unfortunately, injury to #5 may be the only thing that makes it happen. Sad really.

Timotoad....no, I don't have it all figured out nor did I say that I did. I listed facts. The facts are what they are. Not very pretty are they? I didn't even say that McNabb should play, sit, or leave. I said the team needs an overhaul from top to bottom. That includes the coaches most of all. The NFL has passed this coaching staff by. The speedy little defense and the dink and dunk offense doesn't get it done any longer. If the staff does plan to make use of the 2nd round pick that they spent on Kolb, they better get a look at what this kid can do before selling out on another long season before they know what he's made of. There are several rookies in this laegue doing well. If you think the kid will get drilled into the ground, you obviously agree that this team is weak. As far as EHernandez goes, climb back into your hole. Read what I write before commenting because you obvious can't comprehend the English language. I said that Garcia is not a great QB, but the team played better when he was in there. Maybe it was because the brainiac calling the plays realized he had a weak arm and relied more on the run game. wow...a balanced attack....imagine that!!! McNabb was a very good QB when he moved around and took off on occasion. He's still an ok QB if the coaching staff would get a clue and stop setting him up like target practice for defensive linemen. One last thing...there is room for a difference of opinion so keep the name calling to yourself and quit pretending that you're some kind of tough guy. You're part of the obnoxious minority that gives Philly fans a bad rep.

Well put Ehernandez5, why is it Donovan is always the scapegoat for these idiots? Him and Westbrook are the reasons we were ever considered to be a contender at all this year. Someone needs to sit the rest of this team down and wake them the F up! It's like they've lost their souls I swear. I guess they weren't watching the Phils when they won, they could have learned something!

I hate reading comments about retarded Philly fans that always have something to say about our players like McNabb. CHRIS you and ICEMAN are idiots, first of all Jeff Garcia was benched early in the season for Brian Griese. Because Jeff Garcia is not a 16 week player for any franchise. Second McNabb is a top three quarterback in this league if he had the proper help on the other end of the ball (receiver). I bet you were one of those fans all over TO's balls when he was here and then later seen on TV putting his jersey in a coffin what a looser. Fans like you make me sick, because you open your mouth without diagnosing what happen on the field on sunday. We never have receivers open, our running game does not exist, and our head coach is predictable. You should learn the game of football before you make any type of comment you APE!
