Players React To McNabb Benching

BALTIMORE -- When quarterback Kevin Kolb walked around the locker room after Sunday's 36-7 loss in Baltimore and apologized to all of his teammates for his performance, his reaction caught the eyes and the ears of cornerback Sheldon Brown.

Brown remembers what it was like at the start of the 2004 season when he and fellow corner Lito Sheppard were asked to fill the shoes of two outstanding Pro Bowl players in Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor. Brown looked at how Kolb told all of his teammates that he would improve his game and continue to fight. Brown believes that if Kolb can keep an underdog mentality, he'll always come out ahead.

"No matter what he does, it's going to be successful because the fans aren't giving you a chance anyway,"" Brown said. ""When myself and Lito stepped in, everybody were saying we were too short or this or that. You want to be an underdog. To this day, I'm still trying to prove people wrong and tell them, 'I told you so.' As long as he takes that approach, which I think he will, he'll never look back. He'll always look forward."

Reaction to the benching of Donovan McNabb for Kevin Kolb in the second half was widespread. A number of players, including rookie wide receiver DeSean Jackson, were shocked to see the sight of Kolb taking snaps under center Jamaal Jackson just before kickoff.

"It kind of threw me off a little bit," Jackson said. "It's a tough situation for McNabb and for us as a team. He's been our quarterback. That's all we know. It kind of caught me off-guard … No matter who is out there, that's who we have to play with. As a team, we're doing everything we need to do to win a football game. It's nothing against Donovan, things just were going the way we expected. I feel like Coach (Andy) Reid or whoever makes the decision just wanted us to try to start fresh and let Kolb get in there and get a chance to makes some plays."

Brown also echoed those remarks saying that the move was nothing more than trying to get Kolb into the game.

Offensive tackle Jon Runyan, who has blocked for McNabb since the 2000 season, said that the Eagles were simply at the point where they had to try anything to create a spark.

"It's a decision you have to live with," Runyan said. "You're not going to win many games giving the ball to the other team. You have to make a change and try to make something happen."

Over the last nine quarters of football, the Eagles have scored just one touchdown on offense. The Eagles' only points on Sunday came on a 100-yard kickoff return by Quintin Demps. McNabb was 8-of-18 for 59 yards with a pair of interceptions and a lost fumble. Kolb was 10-of-23 for 73 yards and a pair of interceptions. The Eagles finished with a combined QB rating of 12.5.

Jackson and the rest of the receivers are the players most impacted by the man who is running the offense. Third-year receiver Jason Avant said it was tough to see McNabb benched, but at the same time he was happy for Kolb to get an opportunity to display his wares.

"As a receiver, you love both of those guys. We would go to war with either one of those guys," Avant said. "It was an opportunity for Kevin. We just rolled with it. It's nothing that you can prepare for. It just happened. We go through hard rimes. It seems like at times the things that we love the most can hurt us the most. (McNabb's) a fighter and I have all the confidence in the world that he'll come back."

GAITHER, SMITH REACT TO THEIR OWN LINEUP CHANGES

McNabb was not the only player benched Sunday.

Omar Gaither, the starting weakside linebacker since the beginning of the year, and tight end L.J. Smith were also handed lesser roles in Sunday's game.

Gaither was relegated to special teams duty in favor of Akeem Jordan, who had been the team's most productive special teams player this season. Jordan stepped up and made a team-high nine tackles, including two for a loss.

"I found out Tuesday that I wasn't going to be starting this week," Gaither said. "All I can do is keep working hard. It's tough. I've been out there with them all year fighting. To tell you that you can't play, that you can't start, it's tough, but I'm not the coach. I just have to do what I'm told. I went out on special teams and gave it my all.

"I don't think I was a scapegoat either. You make decisions based on what you think is best for the team. Akeem's a good player. It not like he's just putting anybody in there."

Smith was still involved with the offense, even though second-year man Brent Celek started in his place. However, he was not involved as much as he would like or as much as he expected to be. He finished with one catch for three yards.

"Me and Coach (Reid) talked a little bit about it. I thought I was going to play a little bit more than I did," Smith said.

Gaither entered the game fifth on the team in tackles with 62 tackles. Last year, as the middle linebacker, Gaither led the squad with 170 tackles and 14 QB hurries.

Smith, a second-round pick in 2003, is playing this season under the franchise tag after an injury-marred 2007 campaign. Since becoming the full-time starter in 2005, Smith has 152 receptions and 12 touchdowns.

I look back to the beginning of the year and remember all of the Eagles fans on these boards talking about a Super Bowl. I laughed. Can you all now see that this team is many, many players away from being a top-tier team? A lot of you never will see that, but there's huge holes everywhere: DE's & DT's are undersized; linebackers are young and I don't see Gocong making it as a SLB; need 2 safeties (Dawk's a Hall of Famer but he's seen his best days); OL is overrated; no FB anywhere in eastern PA; underachieving and over-evaluated WR's; need a smasher RB; QB has seen his best days, too. As much as I'd love to blame it all on McNabb- and he's been stinking it up- it's all about Reid turning this team into a finesse team- the West Coast passing game is completely wrong for D Mac and physical offenses hand the Eagles D their lunch. Nuff said.

How's that Holmgren template working for the Seahawks? Offering the severance package of the remaining three years worth of money to Reid is entirely fair business for a team that has been probably $100 million under the salary cap since Lurie bought them. That's 10% of money saved. If you keep Reid, it devalues the team far more than the millions cutting him will cost. This is what winners do: they admit reality, admit mistakes, and admit change.

the only way reid will be out of philly next season is if he resigns. he has 3 years and over 11 million left on his contract. the eagles should do the same thing to reid that the seahawks did to holmgren, take away him having final say on draft day and hire a real gm to make those decisions.

The most important thing is to take Reid and his offensive philosophy out of the equation as soon as the season is over. The team is then poised to lure a coach (Cowher is the obvious 1st choice) who may perhaps wish to coach a team-first QB like McNabb, knowing as they do that the team will release Donovan or trade him should the coach seek a different direction. The 2nd option would seem to be getting the tandem of Josh McDaniels, the Offensive Coordinator for New England, and his pet project Matt Cassel. I feel fairly certain that the sheer volume of Reid foulups will continue to mount over the remaining few weeks, and this coaching crop is not going to be available every year. The time to change is as soon as the season ends, even if the ownership is eyeing up coaching talent (Spagnuolo, McDaniels) who are poised to go deep into January. Nothing is served keeping Reid aboard after the season ends. Waiting until the draft would set the franchise back even further than they currently are.

Tymier...thanks for the history lesson. I don't think anyone doubts that McNabb was a great QB. Simms was a great running back, but I don't think we should coax him out of retirement. As far as Iverson, a great player who will never win because he doesn't understand the concept of team. With that said, I totally agree that Reid needs to go and McNabb should stay with a new staff. Cowher would be a great choice. With a decent running game, that will take the heat off any any QB. Reid making the change yesterday, then changing back today only proves that he's totally lost it. You don't throw a kid to the wolves, then sit him on the bench the following game. Reid is showing no leadership skills and it's quite evident why the offense is in such a funk. Time to go Andy!!!!

It is amazing that the fans know more than the owner-it is time to get ride of Reid!!! He not only sucks with his play calling but his draft-look at all the #2,3 and 4th Rd picks not on the team or who should not be-Get rid of Reggie Brown ,LT just like they did with Moats and other losers -It looks like Booker was a waisted pick also.He keeps passing on 3rd and 1 and we have the biggest and one of the best running QB's-all right McNabb Tra, you name it all need to step up -otherwise put someone else in -that is up to the coach and hopefully he will see the light!Don't trade anymore 1st rd picks please!!!!!!

People it's a combination of things. Everyone on this team has some blame. McNabb throws the ball in the dirt too much. Pick a receiver and he's dropped the ball when McNabb doesn't throw it in the dirt. Reid will call two running plays in a row on 3rd and 4th and 1. Inconsistent play calling within the red-zone. Defense is on the field way too long because the offense is 3 and out most of the time. Fix these problems, which is no easy task, and the team goes on a 5 game winning streak and all these McNabb and Reid haters are back on the bandwagon.

m_damimier you need to get a grip and settle back in a place i like to call reality. mcnabb is not problem here. lets go back and take a look at the stat book and let me throw you some numbers. since his second year playing football he' has never thrown for less than 2,200 yards on a season in i believe it was 2002. in 2002 our starting recievers were none other than james thrash, todd pinkston, and freddie mitchell. terrible. 2003 he threw 3,200 with the same core of terrible recievers. 2004 he got TO. what happens? he throws for almost 4,000 yards 31 touchdowns and we go to a superbowl. 2005 he gets hurt, only plays 9 games and STILL throws for 2,507 yards and 16 touchdowns (TO was still around). 2006 TO leaves donny still nets 3,300 yards and 19 TDs. I could go on but i think i've proved my point. This guy has come out and played for a team that has had at best mediocre recievers the ENTIRE time of his employment. The Philadelphia Eagles are notorious for having the worst receiving core in the NFL year after year, but year after year #5 is somewhere near the top of passing yards.....hmm......bad QB huh? THE FIRST year he gets a respectable threat the guy throws for almost 4,000 yards over 30 TD and we make a superbowl.......hmm.....can't say it was all TO his first year at dallas Drew Bledsoe was the qb Dallas went 9-7 and who did they blame???? not the QB.....the COACH. what'd they do? fire his a** and wade phillips came and got that team back on track. but i kinda went on a tangent lets get back to donovann. he's proved he can put up the numbers he just don't have support in the team around him including the coaches. this sunday proved that there is something to be desired in whoever is teaching the quarterbacks because some HORRIBLE decisions where made to the ball. YOU JUST DO NOT THROW THE FREAKING BALL IN ED REED DIRECTION WHAT ARE YOU NUTS!!! thats what i was saying....why wasn't there a coach screaming it as loud as i was??? dunno. but this reminds me of the story of a man named Allen Iverson. Played for a team full of mediocre players (thats being generous). he could score 60 on any given night.....and still manage to lose. did that make him a bad player....lol.......not gonna answer that i'm sure its self explanitory. so in conclusion. FIRE ANDY REID and get somebody in here that knows what they're doing. Lets go get a reciever. Pay him what he wants. i personally woulda loved to have kept TO i dont' care how much he bit*** and moaned he produced and i woulda payed him what he wanted maybe then he woulda shut up. but yeah.....fire andy get bill cowher and get me some freakin recievers that are rated above 89 on madden!

I was totally disgusted by this game, as I was by the last game. I thought the coaching couldn't get any worse, but I guess it can. There is no way that anyone can explain benching McNabb at halftime against the Ravens when the Eagles are down by 3. Yes, McNabb had a bad game last week and wasn't haven't a great game this week, but the Eagles were still in the game. I am the biggest McNabb advocate, but I wouldn't have had any problem with them putting Kolb in when it was clear the Eagles were out of the playoffs. However, McNabb is the only chance we had of somehow sneaking into the playoffs this year. It is inexcusable for the coaching staff to put a rookie in that situation against a defense like the Ravens. I know a lot of people want to blame McNabb for everything, but the first two turnovers were not his fault. The fumble was a missed block and the first interception should have been caught or at least batted down by DJ. And no QB is going to be successful if he has to pass on 80+% of the offensive plays. I totally feel the coaching staff has set McNabb up for failure. For Christ sake, he broke the Eagles pass attempt record last week. Bottom line is your running game has to command some type of respect, and the Eagles running game doesn't get any respect and is non-existent. McNabb shouldn't be asked to pass on every short yardage play (i.e., all 18 short-yardage plays last game) OR asked to pass on 70+% of the offensive plays. Even Brady and Peyton, who are considered to be more accurate than McNabb, are not asked to pass 70+% of the offensive plays. The play calling is just ridiculous. I feel like we are scared to run the ball in short yardage and all the teams that play us know it. So are opponents basically load up for the pass. We definitely need to get rid of Andy Reid and probably the OC. I don't know if it is Andy's family situation or not, but he and the OC have totally forgot how to coach and call offensive plays. I truly feel sad that McNabb will be the one who gets the boot and not Andy, but I hope he ends up on a team that uses him right and gives him the respect he has earned in this league. I will always bleed Eagles green no matter what, but I hope McNabb lands on his feet. And another example of the terrible play calling that has been going on all season occurred when Kolb finally did some good things and had them in a position to score with only 6 inches to go, and what do they call? Another pass!!! 100% of the other teams in the league would have run the ball in.

i didn't see this happening at the beginning of the season like many Eagles fans i honestly had high expectations. but the reality is that the problems do extend from the top and Reid bares all responsibility dating back to our inconsistency in play calling, predictability, and struggles on the redzone offense. the one drive that went 9 plays and ended in a fumble i believe looked decent b/c of the incorporation of the running game. it seems that Reid and Marty are reluctant to stick with the running attack even with a struggling QB. I have also noticed that many of the struggles offensively have emerged with the return of Curtis and Brown. Would anybody else second that? I believe Hank can be a starter over Reggie b/c Reggie has been nonexistent all season, i would keep D. Jax, Hank, and Avant b/c that line up worked well to start the season that will be the number one thing i have noticed. second is why is Buckhalter a non factor when Brian is healthy come Marty he is averaging 7.4 yard per time he touches the ball, last week he touched the ball twice and one of them was a big run. This week he did get hurt but he was back on the field if Brian is struggling b/c of injury then put the next guy in and Buck has proven that he can do an excellent job as a back and a receiving the ball as well. This has been my issues with Reid, his offense hasn't evolved over the years it stays the same screen passes and the deep ball... i didn't see no slants ran until the drive where kevin completed 6 passes in a row, the receivers just run outs and deep plays...where are the comebacks, the in slants, or out slants, learn how to use the strengths of your receivers....this is the west coast offense short passing and yard after the catch....but Reid's time has been up in my eyes for years even when T.O was there, it seems like the offense is pass, pass, pass, the only difference was in 06 when Garcia took over that we did emphasize on running the ball surprisingly it is the last season that we made the playoffs... and to the McNabb and Reid supporters when is the last time did #5 make the play offs?

At the beginning of the season I was excited for the fact that we had Carolina's first round pick as well as our first pick. Now I see that our pick is going to be higher than what we get from Carolina. We may as well trade McNabb before the draft and stockpile our draft board. Trade for a Vet and hope that either Cowher comes to Philly or perhaps swade the defense coordinator from the Giants to come back to Philly. I hate to say it, but the one year we had a weapon in Philly, we almost won the Superbowl; I am tired of average with this team, go to San Fran Reid!

i agree with you guys Mcnabb shouldnt of been bench but i see why. Kolb isnt the answer right now or next year mcabb just turned 32 look Favre last year and this year thats what happens when you have good recivers and good coaches who know what there doing. if you throw 40 to 50 times a game its not hard to figure out like the bengals said and ravens we are predictable is that mcnabb faults he not calling the plays he didnt want to trade for tony gonzo or Boldin or even Winslow thats Reids fault with we are going to win with his self controled stubborn as* its going to throw the ball your on the goaline to change the game aroung 6inches why not qb sneak it nope send your qb back 6yards and throw a interception thats why reaid must go not mcnabb reid and marty when you have 3 wr sets and ravens drop 6 DB what do you thinks going to happen fire reid and marty and keep mcnabb we are not going to get anything better and its not kolb as we seen yesterday maybe we just have to out the players in better situatuions andy you dumb as*

McNabb was benched why? Its not his fault that we dont have playmakers. I really thought of something we traded a 3rd round pick for who LORENZO BOOKER...... he doesnt even play, what does he do nothing, but we wont trade a 2nd for Tony G a proven player in the Nfl yea i guess its McNabb's fault to for that. Continue to put these average and below average reciever's and tight ends on the offense and lets see how many games kevin kolb wins.

I'm a big fan of Donovan but I think this benching today was deserved and could serve as the needed wake up call for him to turn around his career and his wiltering legacy. The kid Kolb to me isn't ready for this level of responisibility i.e franchise quarterback. It was good to see him hit like 6 passes in a row at a point which was something we hadn't seen from uncle Donovan in a while. I'm sure Donovan will get the point from this benching and hopefully it will make him work harder and bring his scrambling legs back out of the closet, he does need them if he wants to take this team to the Superbowl, this year or next year.

Now that we are all but eliminated from post season play I think that every player and coach on this team, whether a seasoned veteran or rookie needs to know that going forward they are playing for their jobs every down, every play of each game. Hard decisions need to be made. No matter what Reid or McNabb may think or say this is nothing but a 500 team of under achievers who need a wake up call. FYI... this is the NFL: Not For Long.

Let's get real, people: There is NO WAY this team is going to another Super Bowl with Andy Reid as the head coach. There is NO WAY. Do you understand that enough to reflect positively on all that the franchise has done over the last decade, and still desire the next step? You do NOT win in the NFL without a commitment to the run. You don't need the most talented RB in the league, but you MUST commit to the RBs you have. You can't design the team with so little regard to being a running team and expect to beat defenses of true quality. Andy Reid is OVER as a head coach--Repeat: OVER. I don't feel cheated for no Super Bowl success this decade. They got close. They had chances. They entertained me. But if Andy Reid is coaching this team next year instead of trying to repair his shattered family, then Jeff Lurie is in no way serious about his commitment to delivering a champion for the franchise. This team has spent a decade WAY under the salary cap, so they can surely afford the $10 million severance package to buy out the contract of the weakest link on the team. Once Reid is jettisoned, and Mornhingweig along with him, I'd expect to see no less than 20 players disappear, too. Say goodbye and thanks to Runyon and Thomas, Booker and Buckhalter, LJ and Schobel, Brown and Lewis, McNabb and Feeley, Sheppard and Considine, Daniels and Young, etc. There should be no uncertainty about whom to go after at Head Coach: only Bill Cowher saying "No Thanks." can cause the search to proceed elsewhere. You want a running game? Reid is forever searching for "versatility", and that is total nonsense. How would you like Cowher's approach to meat-grinding roster rearrangement? You'd have a rugged running attack by the time the team made it to Lehigh in the summer. You would have a TOTAL commitment to the run, and you'd never have to listen to Andy Reid wheeze his way through another press conference. There is no ambiguity here. Andy Reid is not an option at any position for this team. He is myopic in his approach. He is OVER.

There the majority out here.Them and the raiders so don't judge peoples loyaltys just because they disagree with ya. Listen up there guys! I would like you to know that I am a true Redskins fan. After I heard that Donovan was benched, I was truly surprised. As a Skins fan I went to the website to check it out, and what I saw was a great deal of crying, except for a limited few, by the fans. You guys need to support your team no matter what. If there is one team that gives more of a headache when we play them is the Eagles. F*** the Cowboys and the Giants because usually we just play better or they play better on a couple of plays, and that's what determines the winner. But against the Eagles both teams always seem to bring their A game and the win comes from who can drag their sorry asses to the line and play one more down. The reason for that is Donovan. I am scared the most when we play you guys and he is under center, because he is a fighter. And Andy Reid is by far one of the better coaches in the NFL. My only problem with this is that your front office made one bad choice in TO (which probably caused some kind of hesitation by front office in trading for another load mouth vet) and one or two bad choices in drafting WR's. But I think you have a hell of a player in that kid from Cal. As, for Kolb, I believe that Reid was trying to gain some kind of spark. Let Donovan recover. Support your team guys good or bad, this will not always be this way. Donovan and the Eagles are just two good. Keep your heads up. See ya Dec. 21 for another great game.

I think all this mayhem falls on our team executives starting with our ( OFFENSIVE) coaches ending with the fron office personnel. Think about the west coast offense has been a success in other teams, but the had high caliber receivers. When he had the demon ( Terrell Owens ) here in Philly this systemed worked. Now we have 6'1" Reggie Brown (NO ROUTE RUNNING SKILLS) and 5'10" Kevin Curtis. These guys cannot get separation even if the opposing defense was on the sidelines. McNabb has no one to throw to and no one to protect him. Our running does not exist and our FABULOUS defense is being over ran by the opposing team. Marty our offensive coordinator was ran out of the slums of Detroit for a reason. ( HE SUCKS ) Andy Reid's is not managing this team the way it should be managed. In order for this system to work it has to be supported by a descent running system. Mr Lurie cut evaluate your OFFENSIVE coaching staff and you will find the reason why our beloved Eagles are not in the playoff picture once again. Please gives as fans a better offensive coaching and better weapons for our QB to throw to. Look at our past games, we were never blown out because McNabb always kept us in the fight. Kolb comes in and we get slaughtered, you do the math. McNabb plays we always have a chance, you replace him well you saw today what happens. Everyone calls Westbrook weapon X but in reality McNabb is our real superhero.

I am a die hard Eagles fan who bleeds Green! We have had a decade of success under Reid with Super 5 under center. There is no question he is in a major slump. Reid has made a plethora of coaching mistakes this year. I agree…..he is wearing to many hats. GM, HC, OC. He needs to be just HC. Turn offense over to Marty and let him run it and keep hands out of it. All QB’s have slumps. Favre, Manning, and now McNabb. With all McNabb has done for the Eagles, he deserves our support and patience. We need to call Tony Hunt up and get him back on the roster so we have a big short yardage back for this game on Thursday night. Booker is a wasted roster spot. Super 5 better be under center on Thursday night as I will be screaming my head off in the crowd. Like any other head coach in the league knows, the cure for a slumping QB is not a benchng….but a heavy dose of the run! We need a RB that gets stronger as the game goes on. Being a big PSU fan, that is exactly what HUNT is. Reid does need to be slapped for being so utterly spineless with the handling of McNabb today!!! Go Eagles!!!! I am disapointed but ever faithful!!
