My View: McNabb's Chance To Make A Stand

So if you want to take the anything-can-happen approach, the Eagles are just a half-game out of second place in the NFC East. The playoffs are very much within reach. That is your glass-is-half-full view. The other vantage point is that the Eagles have flaws that five quarters in Cincinnati did nothing to smooth the warts that are so visible.

Sunday comes quickly. Baltimore is waiting with that big, bad defense and a good offense featuring a power running game and a young, emerging quarterback in Joe Flacco. The coaches have watched the film of the tie in Cincinnati and are already on to the Ravens. They believe in this team, as every coaching staff believes in its team.

Clearly, though, everybody realizes that this is crisis time,or at least on the verge of such a moment. The Eagles are 5-4-1 with a heavyweight schedule approaching -- at Baltimore, home with Arizona, at the Giants -- and given the state of the NFC playoff picture, another loss -- definitely two -- knocks this team out of any playoff dreams it has.

I have trouble looking at anything like the playoffs after such a poor performance against the Bengals. The defense played its heart out and that group deserves a lot of kudos for attacking the line of scrimmage, for being aggressive and for dominating an offense that it should have dominated. The offense is what needs immediate therapy, starting with the quarterback position.

Donovan McNabb threw 58 passes on Sunday, three of them interceptions, one of them a touchdown. He also was hit and fumbled and that turnover led to three Bengals points which, in the end, were huge.

I agree that 58 passes is too many. The offensive balance is fantastically out of whack. The coaching staff, clearly, does not believe in the running game with this group. So they are putting the responsibility of dragging the offense into the end zone on McNabb and his right arm.

The Eagles scored plenty of points on their way to a 5-4 record. They overcame some pretty lousy starts by keeping at it with the passing game, by giving McNabb time to warm up and get into a groove. At the same time, there was a gnawing feeling that the Eagles left way too many points on the field, and that the troubles they had in short-yardage and goal-to-go situations would eventually catch up with them.

And to a degree, they did. A loss in Chicago was more-than-partially attributed to a pair of goal-to-goal situations that yielded only three points. More troubles manifested in the loss to Washington. Then the Eagles couldn't sustain a drive to keep the game alive against the Giants and the alarm bells went off.

But what happened in Cincinnati was really perplexing and worrisome. The Bengals are a bad football team with a defense that had been gashed all season. The pre-game hope was that the Eagles could get a lead and extend it and then work on their running game in the second half and build a bit of confidence heading into this extremely difficult stretch of games.

There was certainly an awareness of getting McNabb into a rhythm early. The first play of the game was a simple swing pass to the left side to Brian Westbrook, but the pass sailed and Westbrook couldn't bring it in. On second and 10, McNabb fired a pass to the right side for Reggie Brown, but the Bengals swarmed to Brown for a 1-yard loss. On third and 11, McNabb tried to get the ball to an open Kevin Curtis 15 yards down the field, but the pass was high and hard and incomplete and so much for starting quickly.

The offense was awful on Sunday in a game that the Eagles had to win. In the most technical sense it was not a "must-win" game, but, well, how many times can you go to that well? In a handful of days, the Eagles will be playing in another "have-to win" game that isn't necessarily a "must-win game" but who cares about semantics?

What we care about is this offense, this team, this entire football picture.

I really don't know what to say on this Monday. I slept poorly. I saw a season slipping away, one that only a couple of months ago I felt was going to be something special. How does it happen that a team that blew the doors off the Rams in Week 1, then played a fantastic, near-miss game in Dallas in Week 2 before redeeming itself a bit in Week 3 with a physical, emotional win over Pittsburgh is now on the edge? There are factors that some will use as excuses, but they don't play here. There are no excuses. Even with Shawn Andrews out, and with Brian Westbrook battling a variety of injuries and playing at less than 100 percent, the Eagles have been more than healthy by NFL standards.

The responsibility falls on the shoulders of the head coach, Andy Reid, who stands up and takes the responsibility every week. He is the head coach. It is his job to win games.

So what can the head coach do to win in these final six games? He has to make the quarterback play better. How he does that, I don't know. But I know that the Eagles are going to continue to put a lot on McNabb's shoulders, and he has no choice but to deliver. There aren't any magical personnel moves to be made anywhere on this roster. The Eagles have enough weapons to score a lot of points and the guy who steers the wheel is McNabb, in his 10th season and clearly battling some kind of demons in the pocket.

A quarterback who spoke after that win over the Rams of having confidence in his receivers and of throwing to spots and letting his receivers "make plays" is not doing that much these days.

"They did a great job creating a little bit of separation where I could just put the ball out and let them compete," McNabb said following the win over St. Louis. "In order for the guys to be successful and guys to make plays for you, you have to call plays for them."

McNabb is holding on to the ball, waiting for the receivers to create separation and then gunning it to them. The receivers are not consistent enough catching the football, but I believe of lot of that has to do with their lack of certainty as to when the ball is coming out, and where it is coming to, and how fast McNabb is throwing it and all the little insecurities that lead to drops.

Whatever that trust is that is missing between McNabb and his receivers is holding back the passing game. What else do you pinpoint? A lack of a running game? It's hurting the offense, no doubt. There is nothing to fall back on in that phase of the offense, and the play calling is such that running the football barely makes the game plan. Talent at wide receiver? Look, I'm as disappointed as anybody that Brown is such a non-factor here -- that is something that must be addressed by the coaches -- but I still maintain that Curtis, DeSean Jackson, Jason Avant and Hank Baskett are more than enough to get it done. Tight end? Yeah, there isn't a consistent level of production there, but there are plenty of teams getting more done with less talent.

I'm not dumping on Donovan. Please don't misunderstand. I love the guy. I respect tremendously what he has done for the organization. I think he is a rare player to have been here for 10 seasons.

But the Eagles need him more than ever to be a good quarterback. A great quarterback, even. A leader. Someone whom the rest of the players can gather around and follow to victory. I guess in a lot of ways I'm wondering if McNabb is ready to making A Stand. He has to be The Guy To Do It, right? Is there anyone else? Brian Westbrook is a great player, hobbled by injuries but still a great player, but the leadership has to come from a quarterback when the offense is throwing the ball 35-40 times a game. The quarterback has to be the one to throw the team on his shoulders and will a team to victory.

The impact the quarterback has on a team goes far beyond his statistics. You see it everywhere in the league. How much of a winning confidence has Brett Favre had on the Jets? Tony Romo comes back to the Cowboys and they go out and win a big game in Washington. Eli Manning doesn't resemble the quarterback he was in the past, and the Giants are the best team in football. Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco show they are capable young quarterbacks around whom the Falcons and Ravens, respectively, can rally and both of those teams are in playoff contention.

The Eagles need to do the same with McNabb and McNabb has to do the same for the Eagles. It isn't all on him, but it is. He is the quarterback. He is the most important player on the field and in the locker room and in the organization.

This is as close to a crisis as the Eagles have faced in the 10 years Reid and McNabb have been here. So much rides on how the Eagles handle these next six weeks. An entire direction of a football operation can be altered dramatically. That is how I see it through my sleep-deprived, angry, frustrated, disappointed and yet still hopeful eyes.

It's on Donovan. It's on the quarterback. Reid's responsibility is, yes, far beyond anybody here and he acknowledges that every week. But a quarterback can change things on every play on the field. Donovan needs to make A Stand. Right now. So much depends upon the next week, two weeks, however long.

Fyer Potential doesnt mean anything in the NFl. Calos Rogers had a lot of potential when he came out of college. The NFL isnt about Potential it is about results and making plays

I have been reading all these articles and posts. And thinking ALOT about this team. I have enjoyed most of the ride with andy as coach and there have been some fun years with alot of hope and promise. But that time has past. It's as simple as that. We were awesome and had everyone back-peddling for some time with our system, and at that time, our division also flat out STUNK. The gig is up. People have our number. We are not going to "surprise" ANYONE. There were even reports of the 1 and 8 bungles players saying they knew exacttly what to expectfrom us. It's been fun andy, but the division has passed you by. Time for change and HOPEFULLY the outcome we have all waited so long for. All this applies for D-MAC as well sadly. He too has given us some great memories, but the guy is playing with all the passion of a funeral parade now. Anyone have Bill Cowher's number?? Now there is a man that would NOT except his QB laughing and cracking jokes after throwing completions to the WRONG uniform!!!!

First time post this is how i see it. I started following the eagles that year they went to the superbowl against NE and that was a truely fantastic team and probably should have won it, but lets not go there. Right now people calling for Donovan's head isn't doing this team any favours. Football is based 1st on skill and 2nd on morale. If there is no morale then your skills get bashed. 5 is the man under centre and is quite rightly such. B-West is in my opinion the most dangerous back in the league. Not necessarily best, but most dangerous because you have to plan for him. But Andy Reid is making too many mistakes. Donovan throwing 58 passes when he was quite clearly off it that day is ridiciulous especially when you consider that #36 averaged 4.3 YPC on 18 carries. Give him the ball. To be honest if Reid can't gameplan for the Bengals then we'll get stuffed in Baltimore. We need to change the philosophy because teams see us as 1 dimensional now. Cover Curtis and D-Jax and we got nada. Avant can catch the ball but lacks separation skills and Reggie isn't fit. If you throw the balll 58 times it's just begging teams to drop into coverage, which is when you should run the ball I've never coached except for Madden and I reckon I could do a better philosphy than Andy Reid right now. Give Westbrook the ball and get Donovan looking to his consistent targets (Curtis and Jackson) and we can begin healing this team. thanks guys Neil

For those of you who want to get rid of d mac and andy please stand up and let us know when was the last time we had a coach and qb this long who were successful? Yeah time's are hard right now and it's driving me crazy but let's be real. Everybody gets paid to play and coach so nobody is going to give you anything and there is a fine line between winning and losing in the nfl. As for the Cowher solution, how long did it take him to win a ring in pitt? But pitt stuck with him through many tough times and he did it. Right?

also who thinks we should reactivate booker n use our 3 running backs at the same time like the front office was hinting we would at the beginning of the year. we got too scared to do it n instead tried to use the wildcat as our trick plays like EVERYONE ELSE

what you seem to be defining, icruz, is who has PERFORMED. im not talking about RESULTS. Im talking about POTENTIAL! Sometimes it takes the right coach to pull out the BEST in a person or use them CORRECTLY!

icruz: you HAVE to understand if we arent using people correctly. case and point. how come New Orleans can use Marcus Colston on SLANTS and FADES and CURLS, but we CANT use Baskett in the same way. Why is Baskett running STREAKS and DIGS? He has ok speed so you are not going to see a lot fo separation. HOWEVER, what average corner back (5'9-5'11) can stick Baskett (6'4) on routes such as a slants, Fade, or a go up and get it curl? I dont think there are many, sir. But we dont use him correctly. The EAGLES have a problem with not player to people's STRENGTHS. You see that a lot, sir. They think they can plug and play anyone anywhere. Thats just one example. LJ has talent but sometimes he doesnt show up. Some times they use him incorrectly. Just because you are underperforming...doesnt mean you arent talented. Blocking has nothing to do with TALENT. Thats a personel decision.

Fyer, what does it matter where people live? I'm tired of that being brought up. I used to live in Philly, now I live on the border of PA and MD, in MD, one mile from PA. 40 minutes from Philly, 45 from Baltimore. I'm a diehard Philly fan all around. 76ers, Eagles, and even though I don't really keep up with baseball (not my cup of tequila) I was happy to see the Phillies take it. Back the to moral of the comment, what difference does it make where anyone lives? Directly in Philadelphia there is a massive bandwagon of people living near each other, forcing opinions upon each other. The media obviously doesn't help with that. We're ALL fans though, and even if I never even so much as lived in PA, and lived in MD all my life, I'd still be a diehard Philly fan. Just because anyone doesn't live directly inside the heart of the city, doesn't mean we feel the pain of failure any differently. I'm 50/50 on Mcnabb, been a fan of his ever since he turned the team I'm a fan of around. But it's a rough world in the NFL, if You are on a downward slope, You're on a downword slope. I'll always respect McNabb, but at 31...... I do gotta say soon is the time to trade him, while he still has mass worth. I'd love to see a trade, DEPENDING on what we get out of it. A draft choice and a reciever, HB, or FB would make me content. As long as it's a high draft choice along with the FB idea.

If and when McNabb leaves us this offseason, who will we trade him to? McNabb and Samuel are the only two players giving us cap issues. McNabb is on contract until 2014, giving us a 10.36mil cap charge for 2009 alone. In 2013 (if he stays that long) we'll be charged 16.21mil for cap charges. This offseason Thomas, Runyan, Dawkins, Smith, Hanson, Considine, Nick Cole, Buckhalter, and Baskett are all still FAs. Who do we reenlist? Thoughts anyone?

Fyer cant disagree with you even more no one on the offensive side of the ball other than McNabb, BWest, and Buck and maybe DJax has proven themselves to be worthy of saying we have a talented crew. Our receivers are average AT BEST and our Backs are good but they have no blocking so in a way they are no good

no...maybe the o-line just isn't good at run blocking. and our receivers are not weapons. that speaks to personel. like i said before...westbrook is the only other legitimate playmaker that defenses have to scheme for and something doesn't look right with him. buck makes some nice plays but he doesn't get enough chances to see if he would be a consistent playmaker. losing our best run blocker this year has hurt us in more ways than one.

icruz: we DO have Superbowl CALIBER TALENT. If our talent played up to their talent level, we wouldnt even be 5-4-1. We'd be 8-2 at the WORST! We ARENT losing because of talent, dude. We have the talent. They just arent performing. In the NFC (NFC specifically) there are that many other teams that are more TALENTED than us. SO, all you have to do is MAKE IT to the superbowl to ba a SUPERBOWL team, correct? So in saying that, we have the TALENT to make it to the superbowl...hence, we have SUPERBOWL caliber talent. Dont look too deep into what I'm saying here. We do have the talent to make it to the superbowl. our problem is our system and how some of the personel is PERFORMING!!!

Oh yeah. Thanks. BDay went well. My best pal took off work Friday. We went to the HS playoffs Thursday night at "The Dump" Texas Stadium. Then went to The Gentlemens Club. Dallas' classiest. And by classiest I mean... most likely to do a nasty stripper in the parking lot. 'The GC' is owned by The Abbott Brothers of Pantera. It's BYOB.... which is fantastic. We drag a cooler in there with 6 or 8 different types of brew. Then we bring 2 cases of Mickeys big mouths.... to feed the b17ches. Isn't that smart? Cause you know everytime you drink that genocide you do stuff you wouldn't ever do without it. Anyways... Stayed there till about 4AM. Drove to Mansfield and hung out with some pals till 9AM. Then went to The Dump and watched football all day. Then back to GC till Saturday... and then so on. Drove 3 hours back to Austin for EAGLES game on Sunday. === Hung out with my pal 'Blisters' last night. You know... outside of her going to business mens houses for an hour... and walkin out with $600 bucks. And the fact she crawls all over errectified men all night for a profession. She's a sweet girl. Nasty... yet sweet. And she's surprisingly witty for a nasty Yellow Rose stripper. Kinda funny sometimes. Makes me laugh. Her roomate is even hotter... but she carries a goat skin bound Necronomican with her all the time. So I keep in mind a mental note of that every time I see her. And it's kept me from makin my move. Don't wanna get turned into a frog. Or even worse... have some spector with red glowing eyes show up in the middle of things. I have enough trouble with my cat watching. OR EVEN worse than that.... Phil Spector showin up. That would be terrifying. But seriously... by far the best thing about 'Blisters' is.... she got me turned onto The Family Guy. I am a huge Simpsons fan. Got every episode. But I never watched The Family Guy. Man... that s*** is funny. Seth McFarland is Genius.
