McNabb, Offense At Major Crossroads

CINCINNATI – It was a tie, which is like a, well, a tie which isn't what you focus on after a game like this. Everybody felt disappointment, embarrassment, whatever. A 13-13 game ended at Paul Brown Stadium and the gloomy locker room peeled back to Philadelphia wondering what is next.

What IS next? A major shake-up? Something to rattle the bones of the locker room? A way to get the Eagles to be the team the coaches think it can be?

Or, maybe, this is what the Eagles are – a team that just didn't beat the 1-8 Bengals at a stadium with just as many Eagles fans as Cincinnati fans.

For the sake of focus here, the focus has to be on the offense. And it has to be on the man running the offense, quarterback Donovan McNabb. It was certainly not his fault alone that the Eagles managed just 13 points, and that they were unsuccessful on three third-and-1 plays and that they continue to founder in the running game. The only conversion in short yardage? A fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak.

And that the pass/run ratio was completely out of whack, as McNabb attempted 58 passes and ran the ball just 18 times – one of them a McNabb sneak to convert a third down and one of them on DeSean Jackson's run out of the "Wildcat" formation when it looked like the young wide receiver wanted to throw the football.

But, hey, McNabb is the guy here, and the quarterback gets a lot of the credit and a lot of the blame. Right now, McNabb has a bunch of heat on him, and that is understandable.

He insisted after the game that he felt no such pressure – "It's not weighing on me at all," said McNabb when asked if his slow starts are weighing on him. "It's not how you start, but how you finish … Sometimes that is going to happen. But it's about having short-term memory and moving on."

OK, but …

McNabb struggled. Sunday, he more than struggled. Big time. He threw three interceptions and lost another turnover when he was sacked deep in his own territory and the Bengals recovered at the 1-yard line. Hey, the defense held – as it did most of the day – and the Eagles lost just three points, but the tone was set there.

As he had in his previous three games, McNabb came out playing very poorly. He completed one pass in the first quarter, a quick hitter to Reggie Brown that was tackled for no gain. The Eagles had a total of minus-3 yards in the entire first quarter.

The boiling point came late in the first half when McNabb's pass glanced off the back shoulder of wide receiver Kevin Curtis into the hands of a Bengals defender, the second interception thrown in as many series for McNabb and the Eagles offense. As the team trudged off the Paul Brown Stadium field trailing the woebegone Bengals by seven points, it was fair to wonder if this was as low as it could get for the Eagles, for McNabb, for the offense.

McNabb has been bad in the first half of recent games – it has been well documented – and on Sunday he carried that into the second half with a killer interception on a pass intended for L.J. Smith that ended an Eagles drive in Cincinnati territory and gave the Bengals great field position. The defense held, gave the Eagles another shot and basically saved the day, as it did all game.

It was McNabb's third interception of the game, the first three-pick game he has had since the awful loss in 2006 at Tampa Bay. And it was a play typical of McNabb's troubles: The Bengals lined up seven players on the line of scrimmage on a third-and-5 play from the Cincinnati 36-yard line, then dropped safety Chris Crocker into coverage. McNabb took a quick drop and threw for Smith in the right seam. Smith was, by the time the ball got there, covered by Crocker on the under side and by deep help over the top. McNabb's throw was flat and intercepted by Crocker.

The game went into overtime and the offense sustained nothing against a Bengals team that was not afraid one bit to blitz McNabb. The Eagles failed to counter. They threw a couple of screen passes. They tried to get the ball out quickly, but McNabb had a half-dozen of his passes batted down or tipped at the line of scrimmage.

It was just a very poor performance, so incredibly disappointing. What it means to the playoff chances isn't even worth considering right now. The Eagles need something good to happen. They need to make some good fortune for themselves.

They have McNabb, who in his 10th season and is going to take all kinds of heat for admitting after the game that he wasn't aware that regular-season games in the NFL end – even when the score remains tied – after one 15-minute overtime period.

"I never knew that was in the rule book," said McNabb.

Reporters rolled their eyes and shook their heads when McNabb said that, and when he also said that "I would hate to see what would happen in the Super Bowl or in the playoffs if they settled for a tie."

Amazing. McNabb wasn't the only player unaware that a regular-season game ends in a tie after 15 minutes of a scoreless overtime, but that is almost besides the point.

The Eagles are at a critical crossroads.

"We have to do it. It's got to get done now. I have confidence that we can get it done, but it has to get done on the field," said McNabb.

Words are just words right now. The Eagles were out of whack on Sunday when they had the football, and they have a lot of problems they want to solve in a short period of time. Andy Reid was a very unhappy man after the game – "I have to do a better job," he said. "Everybody has a little piece of the pie. We all have to do our jobs a little bit better. I wish I could point one finger at it." – and he clearly understands that the team is in a rocky place right now.

So what are the Eagles going to do about it? With Baltimore's aggressive defense waiting on Sunday, they aren't going to have much time to shift gears. The Eagles really have to hope McNabb finds some kind of rhythm. I know there is going to be a drum beat for Kevin Kolb, but throwing him in against Baltimore isn't the right move.

Not right now.

Certainly, though, it is fair to expect more from McNabb and from the offense and from everybody. The Eagles wasted a dominating performance from a defense that garnered eight sacks, shut down the running game and kept the Bengals offense – which had good field position for most of the game – completely shut down other than a Ryan Fitzpatrick touchdown pass to T.J. Houshmanzadeh.

This one was on the offense. The Eagles aren't having success throwing the football, which puts a huge crimp in the plans when the emphasis is on throwball. The running game? Brian Westbrook had 60 yards on the ground on 14 carries, but the Eagles are so far skewed from trying to develop the ground game the numbers are almost inconsequential.

At 5-4-1, anything is possible. But what have the Eagles done to make anyone think they can get on some kind of magical roll? Let's hope it happens. I'm praying. This offense has been tough to watch in the last month. McNabb comes out throwing bullets all over the yard and the three-and-out series pile up.

A tie in Sunday's game was like a loss to a bad, bad Bengals team that did everything it could to hand the game to the Eagles. The Bengals went for first downs with strangely-conservative play calls, they failed to capitalize on great field position and they just generally stumbled around as the Eagles dominated the line of scrimmage when Fitzpatrick and Co. were on the field.

What is alarming is the Eagles' offense. There are major, major question marks. The Eagles need something to go right immediately. I wish I had the answer. I wish I could snap my fingers and see how this turns out. But for 75 minutes on Sunday, the offense labored as badly as at any time in the Reid/'McNabb era.

The Eagles have gone backwards on offense. What will it take to get them going in the right direction?

andre johnson would be a great answer quinton. and since i want mcnabb to stay so would ocho cinco cuz they have a good relationship. crabtree is amazing but theres not a chance in hell he will fall to us in the draft. larry johnson would b a great power for us i like that idea. the screen has not been used effectively but thats for the lack of deep routes. if our o line is pass blocking as effective as they r y is our deep route just a fly? we need to run routes that will get our wrs separation. yes separation is on the wrs but it is also on the playcalling and lack of a run game

The Eagles played better offense in the first three games of the season WITHOUT Reggie and Kevin. Baskett is being talked about as a goaline threat all over Espn when he is THROWN too because of his size. McNabb hates the fade route though admittingly but we see how it works for the Giants with Eli and Plax. Curtis was a #3/#4 Receiver in STL so why was he our savior after TO and Stallworth? Reggie has talent but needs someone to show him how to play big in the NFL. Come on Reggie you played in the SEC! We see the effect Rice has on Jackson now a ROOKIE is the best WR on the team? McNabb is playing with no sense of urgency in the second half mainly on game deciding drives and the plays that AR is calling couldn't be worse. Run a 5'8 back into a goaline defense? Not to say it would cure our problems bout wouldn't you at least like to see what a Shaun Alexander could of done in the preseason to determine what could be done in the regular season? No REAL FB no goaline back no go to WR and an aging QB along with OL. The screen used to kill the league last year with 36 how many times have we seen it this year used effectively? They are doing right by getting creative with Jackson but he's about the same weight as G. Lewis and the problem with that is he's one big hit away from being hurt. Not to take anything away from his skills cause he plays BIG. Larry Johnson is out of KC this year give him a shot. WR's to look at for next season Boldin(Arizona) Johnson (Houston) and in the draft Crabtree out of Tech and that kid out of North Carolina. Somethings got to give before we all GIVE UP!

Andy Reid doesn't clearly understand a frackin' thing. The guy's a moron and we need a coaching change ASAP before we lose what talent we have left. Wake up, Spadaro.

i'll ask many of you one question how can a team establish the run it's quite easy just practice more at it, design new schemes and don't give up on it so quickly... also buckhalter has big play ability in him don't forget he has chosen as staley's replacement when he went to pittsburgh... also he filled in nicely during the games brian missed... mcnabb is not the problem but he has has to show more urgency on the field, he can run it when the opportunity comes instead of throwing into double or triple coverage... he needs to learn the rules if he didn't know it was only one overtime... in 06 with basically the same players minus adrews who is injured when garcia took over the helm the eagles definitely showed the ability to pound the ball with brian... the running game starts at the o line and the eagles have pound for pound the biggest line just to move backwards and pass protect... blame reid for not letting them get into a flow of running, finally westbrook did have decent numbers yesterday 66 yards on 14 carries that equal 4.0 + yds per carry i think...

i'm gonna say this part short and sweet. donovann mcnabb is not the problem cuz he's not a bad qb look at the stats. and he does this with terrible recievers. however it has been andy reid's atrocious play calling that has cost us games coupled with the fact that he's under the impression that our o-line can run block good enough for westbrook to be effective. uhm......hes a scatback if you don't open up a hole he will not be able to move a pile....hes tiny....either send him out to the sidelines or get a o-line thats gonna open some holes...simple... ALTERNATIVE: put in buckhalter. he's no bigger than westbrook but he does run a lil farther downhill and has a better ability to make a hole than westbrook does. so he should be the guy in when we wanna pound at the D. even though he's no brandon jacobs...but he's all we got. then maybe after we get the D to put a extra backer or two in the game we can get the passing game going......to the SIDELINES!!! we got all these small fast recievers that andy reid insists upon sending across the middle to their doom. so why don't we try a few little 5-8 yard out routes that are gonna get yards quick INSTEAD of trying to go downfield every time donovann drops back. i also think we need a t.j. who's ya momma or steve smith type receiver that is gonna go get the ball WHENEVER you throw it to him. i think we have that in jason avant but my friends (and andy reid apparently) tend to disagree. i personally think he has some of the best hands on the team along with brent celek until last week....lets not discuss it i'm still traumatized by it. i could go on for days. but i think that its a time for a shift in play calling. and i think its time somebody lights a fire under andy reid's butt. he has too much job security. if it were any other team there would be plenty of talk about finding a new head coach. not in philly. i think he's too comfortable in his chair and needs a reality check. or maybe he just needs to stop calling the plays. let jimmy johnson take a shot at the offense....who knows may work. but it is definitely time for at least a change in how the game is managed and who gets in when. because whatever the plan is now IS NOT GETTING THE JOB DONE!! my sugestion: invest in either a power running back (the clinton portis type comes to mind) or a power receiver that has to be accounted for (i believe T.J. who's ya momma AND chad johnson's contracts are up this year but don't quote me on that i'm not sure...but if so we should throw some money in their direction i'd rather have TJ he's way better than chad (another convo))

i'll say this again. you can't ask a QB to pass 58 times with no running game and expect good results. as we saw yesterday without a running game the D was able to rush 4 and drop 7 into coverage most of the game. the most we generally send 4 or 5 receivers out on any given play, with those numbers who has the advantage? its not the O. granted McNabb had a bad game yesterday, but there has got to be more accountability in the playcalling and gameplanning. just my opinion as a Eagles and football fan for 30+ years.

Actually I agree with that. I love McNabb as much as anyone can right now. But to say that he did not know there were ties in the NFL. Come on FIVE. In fact, if I am not mistaken. We had our last tie in 2002 against the Ravens. Wasn't he our Qb for the last ten years. So that would mean he was our QB that day too. Simple math here folks. Jesus McNabb. Did you play so poorly yesterday that you forgot that you were our QB during our last tie game five years ago.

food for thought people: mcgag claims he didn't know there wasn't going to be a second OT. okay...IF that were true, a 10-year veteran, QUARTERBACK at that, doesn't know the basic rules of the game? i understand cole and a few others didn't know that, but the leader of the team which is the QB should be well aware of that. afterall, he's the one pretty much controlling the ball/game. he was just trying to justify why he couldn't put anything together for 5 quarters. "i thought i had another 15 minutes?" translation in football time=45 minutes. how do i know the guy was lying? well, because of the HAIL MARY he threw, which, if you think there's more football time, why would you do it? it's like having the ball in the third quarter with 7 seconds and you hail mary?? well, there's another quarter. so not only is mcgag terrible, he also is a delusional narcissistic liar. enough said. it's safe to say he is done in philly. reid? not so sure, but if he refuses to let go of "buddy" marty, maybe lurie will cut his losses and get rid of grease and company.

i agree that they will probably slide herremans out left but i dont think he has the size or skills we need at lt thats y i would rather him go to rt if they want him to play tackle. i think that andrews could play any position on the oline wit amazing results but i wana see him stay at guard n help our run game if andrews moves to lt i wana see jean gilles next to him n have us run to the left like the chargers did in LTs mvp season. valid points though firelion

ww) that was close but not quite on your O-line prediction. If Thomas goes next year, then Herreman's slides out to LT (unless Dunlap shows he's ready next year). If Runyan goes, Andrews would probably slide out to RT. But there will no doubt be some changes to the O-line next year. The fact that we cannot establish a running game early with the few attempts we make at it definitely shows it to be a need we will address early next year.

rshreff half the things u said werent even facts they were opinions. n to everyone saying mcnabb is done start kolb the rest of the season, we still have a slim chance of making the playoffs so until we have 6 losses y would u put in a backup. there needs to b changes in the front offices n the coaching staff. marty has not been a good oc for us he needs to go. for most of andys time here iv been on the same page as him but the last couple years have been hard to bear this year especially but he has shown us that he can get us to the promise land. mcnabb still has plenty of great games in his future. it would b in our best interest if they were wit the eagles cuz kolb isnt gonna just step in n win us a championship n wit the veterans that we have we have limited time to get this done. if we name kolb the starter we r basically gonna start all over on offense n have an overhaul of players, especially if we get a new coach. everyone is calling for a power running back but if we just gave buck more touches we would have a 2 headed monster. we need a real fb, klecko has the heart to win he needs to stay but have him keep beefing up n put him at dt. we should keep djax baskett n avant next year n trade for a game changing wr. our offensive line is gonna get moved around. either thomas or runyan maybe both will b gone after the year. i see our oline at lt-thomas lg-jean-gilles c-jackson rg-andrews rt-herremans or lt-jean-gilles lg-herremans c-jackson rg-andrews rt-runyan/draft pick or fa. some people r talking about moving andrews to a tackle position n i think hed b a great lt but with his run blocking ability i think hes better suited at guard

Great quote, "This is feeling a bit like "Groundhog's Day"- last year the team started well.. struggled mightily for a good 6-7 week stretch, playing out of playoff contention, then played just well enough at the end to win a few meaningless games and drop in the draft order by 10-12 places. This is simply a mediocre football team- poorly coached, poorly executed at QB and other key positions, and really not deserving of the time, energy and emotions of this wonderful city's fans"

So they say that the defense will win games and championships – I’ve always been one to try and block out that theory because with a horrendous offense, how can a team win games? Defenses PRESERVE leads, bottom line. Apparently, that theory is absolutely incorrect. Our defense has been shaky, but in the moments where they step it up, our offense refuses to capitalize and make some points. So my last post was supposed to be yesterday – well, I recant that last statement and will make some very minimal points, as the reid/mcnabb era is thankfully over. Point 1: mcnabb, reid, and marty are done in my book. Im so serious about this boycott thing to make lurie stop this nonsense. 2. okay, all the mcgag lovers, what have you got to say now? Whos the one who mentioned his momentum-changing or game-ending interceptions/fumbles? That was me. No one’s hating on mcgag – we’re just seeing the truth as it is. The guy has no life in him anymore, and that smile of his that we debated for nearly an entire day has caused me to be in the negative, respect-wise. What could possibly be funny about, arguably, the season being over? What’s funny about HALF of the fans being your own in the oppositions stadium? What is to smile over that you just overthrew the ball to a wide open receiver, ultimately landing in the hands of the other team? Nothing is funny but the homeless-like pose mcgag was seen towards the end of the game – if anyone noticed that, you’d see the man is through. To me, he’s a little crazy. Maybe the superbowl loss resulted in a nervous breakdown none of us knew. That personal day he took was to see his shrink. I’m sorry, but point 3. is this team’s lack of heart. To not be able to squeeze a win over the BENGALS? No excuse. I’m not looking forward to a guaranteed bad next couple of years as we rebuild, but there’s hope in it. With mcgag, andy grease and co., they’re guaranteed to let you down. Mcnabb’s smile is taunting, like it or not. As if saying! “COME ON DOWN YALL. IT’S ME, MCGAG AND COMPANY. I will build you up just to let you down, guaranteed!!! I promise I’ll throw some interceptions, fumble the ball, and then smile like I’m doin now because really, it’s MY BAD!! My coach andy grease has got the best, most predictable gameplan in town, so grab your popcorn, get to the edge of your seats, and put your faith in my trembling hands!!! Wait, I feel the urge to throw up that mama mcnabb chunky soup, but it’s all good. I know I just blew the game, my bad ya’ll!!! Maybe next never!!!!” -_-

And skyer u wanna talk about getting facts right yea mcnabb threw for 300 yards but he also attempted 58 and passes and had 4 turnovers so if u think that is a good game u just cant admit to ur self that this teams problems come from its leaders which is the qb and the head coach.

this is for skyer isaw how ur saying eagles fans want mcnabb to do bad so they can b right n because they r being selfish. And yes he did take us to 4 nfc championship games and a superbowl bout how long ago was that? and if u think mcnabb is so good n still can lead this team u r dead wrong. MCnabb does not have what it takes to lead a team and win a football game. He is the last qb i would want to have on my team in a 2 minute drill. Also how can u not get pissed when he sits there and smiles wen he throws a ball 20 feet over the receivers head
