Vote Of Confidence

Despite carrying just four healthy wide receivers on their active roster for most of the season, it's looking like the Eagles might have a clean slate coming out of the bye week.

And though Reggie Brown's role is still up in the air since he was limited in practice on Wednesday, the return of Kevin Curtis from a sports hernia offered an interesting question: what would happen to electric rookie DeSean Jackson?

Head coach Andy Reid minced no words on Wednesday, though. The rookie, his leading receiver, would be starting alongside Curtis against Atlanta on Sunday.

WR DeSean Jackson has not shown a lack of confidence despite being a rookie
"It's a big situation for me, it's a big situation for our team," Jackson said. "So far, it's been great. I've just been putting a lot of hard work into it, and dedication."

Rewind just three months, and Jackson couldn't even crack third string on the depth chart before training camp. It wasn't an indictment of his ability or work ethic, but more an endorsement of the difficulties rookies face breaking into Reid's system early. And even from the most fervent optimist, the expectations for Jackson weren't extremely high. Should he have contributed from the slot offensively while making plays on punt returns, he would have done his job.

But through six games, Jackson's 433 receiving yards lead the Eagles, and the total is good enough for 17th overall in the NFL, by far the best total for a rookie. He's broken into the end zone on a punt return, and his gamebreaking ability there has spiced up the Eagles' field position.

That's why Jackson won't be seeing decreased reps come Sunday, despite an obvious competition for more balls.

"You definitely have to be a competitor playing this game," Jackson said. "With that being said, we all know the importance of being out there to contribute as an individual for a team. We don't really get caught up in individual success. Everybody will want it, but it doesn't do any good when you're not winning."

It might be a stretch to call Jackson a team leader just yet, but his impact isn't hard to notice. In the locker room following the Week 6 win in San Francisco, Jackson was leading his offensive teammates in a chant/song hybrid.

It's all about fun, Jackson said.

"It's just a passion to win," Jackson said. "It's hard for me to take a loss. It's hard for me to see my team out there losing. It's tough. It's definitely not a good feeling."

So right now, maybe it isn't all that surprising that we'll still be seeing quite a lot of Jackson. Maybe it was during preseason. Maybe it was after his notorious "fumble" at Texas Stadium.

But not now.

"It definitely was a vote of confidence (from the coaches), but that's something I brought in on my own, with the swagger and the confidence," Jackson said of being named the starter. "I'm just working hard to stay at this spot. You can't get satisfied; you've got to keep putting in the work."

Scotto_65, we're playing at home... not in Atlanta. Anyway, the good news is that the next 2 games should be in the bag, putting us at 5-3. We'll have a tough game against the giants (but at least we're at home), but then we're playing the Bengals and Ravens. I'm not saying those teams aren't decent, but let's face it the Philly line-up is a bit better then what they're working with... when we're not injury plagued that is. I could see us easily being 9-3 before we play the Giants again. My prediction is that we'll go 9-3 up to the Giants... then become 9-4, and put the smack down on the Browns, Redskins, and Cowboys (since we're at home that game). That would put us at 12-4. I know I know, wishful thinking but we have the talent, we just need ANDY REID to start making some AGGRESSIVE CALLS. You're never going to be a championship team with a coach that's afraid of making mistakes. You have to take risks, and you have to go for it on 4th down once in a blue moon Andy, come on. Look at all of the other Championship winning coaches... they don't play ball this girly football.. they go for the win, not the tie.

I cannot wait to see Kevin Curtis take the field again with DJ lining up on the other side. Then next question is Reggie Brown, I had high hopes for this guy. He was never the super talent but was still a good receiver in a system that gave him every opportunity he could ask for. But he just doesn't seem to be all there as of late, drops way to many passes and now has a constant injury bug. I just wonder if his confidence or lack there of isn't coming into play here more than anything. Finally the last and most important thing that isn't getting the coverage that it should is that BRIAN WESTBROOK IS BACK. And lets not forget that our offense moves on Westy's back and without him we are terrible. This week should be sweet with everyone (aside from Andrews) being healthy and playing an over-rated team in Atlanta. GO Eagles!

Man d jack is like a breath of fresh air. finally we have the deep threat that we have been missing since stallworth and we finally have the opportunity to return a punt more than 5 yards. Sorry Reno! I just hope he can stay healthy. I really would like to see curtis used in the slot like welker. These two players mirror each other. keep d jack on the flank with the option of a screen or two. i do think ppl been coming down on #86 kinda hard. he's been hurt but is fairly reliable with good routes and hands. the one ? is Baskett. Could he be a Brandon Marshall? well AR will have to give him more snaps b4 we can ans. that ?

Mcnabb's lack of confidance? Are you crazy! He has ALWAYS had a humbling approach even when he made a super star status with his magic scrambles. Even with TO. He has had a lot of promises blow up in his face and kept the same composure. He has 12 more catches and near 200 yds more than the next closest, obvious favorite with Curtis comes should only benefit him more.

DJ10 and Curtis are the next first string WR`s of the philadelphia Eagles. Brown and Baskett are going to be the 2nd string line up and third string is avant and lewis

If we're talking about draft picks already 6 weeks in. I say use them all on a kicker each round till we find one accurate up to 53 yards out.

Im wondering if brown is going to be the starter along with curtis after he gets healthy. In the press conference with McNabb he said that curtis and brown should be the starters. Andy said curtis and Desean but i wonder if thats just because brown cant go.

I don't know if Andrews can play tackle like Runyan and Thomas but I do know he deserves a shot in due time. Personally I think Thomas and Runyan both should get a two year extension. When on the field they are a very nice tandem. Use the draft picks this year to acquire offensive lineman. A safety or two would also be nice. I would also like to get another defensive tackle. It's all about winning. Go Eagles!!

In response to toisfivestarget's comment. I think McNabb is doing what he needs to do to manage DeSean and keep him humble. It appears to be working as you can tell by DJax's stats.

I think Shawn will end up playing one of the tackle positions if MJG continues to play well. We KNOW Shawn can do it. This year will show whether Max can do it. If he CAN, then we have Dunlap and 2 1st round picks to find another Tackle. Now, Runyan seems like the kind of guy that would take less to stay here so we still may not have a problem. Tre still gets a lil nicked up from time to time. GO PHILLIES!!!

First of all..if Jerry Rice is gonna take time out to mentor and coach you..then you must be pretty good. Its already evident in his play...his route running is crisp and I love how he puts his hand up at the last second when the db is facing him on the sideline...He has the number 2 spot locked and is contending for #1!

I love this kid too. What is starting to unnerve me is the somewhat lack of confidence on 5's part. While I respect Dnabb to the fullest, it seems like he constantly wants to keep reminding people that he is a rookie. I agree he is a rookie, but he is a rookie phenom. Give the guy some credit "5", he has your back.

I love this kid, you cant really ask for anything more out of a rookie. My one and only concern is that the front office dosnt make a mistake and lose him in the offseason. He sould be a great addition to this team for years to come. Hope he has a great rest of the year. Go EAGLES!!!

1rst! I can't wait untill we can see white lightning, Bwest, and action jackson on the field in the same packages... With curtis stretching the field, and the run threat from westbrook, It should get desean one on one in space with line backers and we know what can happen with this kid and some space to run....

And he's JUST 6 games into his career. Imagine how explosive DeSean is gonna be for years to come? Yall need to pay attention. This IS our #1 receiver and I'm proud of DeSean for overcoming media hype and nay-sayers. Dude is talented and will be one of the best! There is no attitude problems and all of that. THIS IS FOOTBALL!!! Keep working, DeSean. You deserve all the credit that you are getting!
