Banner's View On Trade Deadline, More

The face of the NFC East has changed -- depending on your view -- either slightly or dramatically in recent weeks. Dallas is struggling. The Giants are surging. Washington continues to win slugfests. What does it mean for the Eagles? What did the week that was -- a bye week, a trade deadline that came and went -- mean to the Eagles? Eagles President Joe Banner visited on the set of Eagles Live! on Monday afternoon and talked about all of the above, and more.

He was very optimistic. Banner talked about the Eagles' strategy during the trade deadline and discussed what he thought of this team moving forward. Here are some of the highlights of a 20-minute interview:

  • On the NFC East: "Within a range, I still think we have the toughest division and we have four of the best teams in the league. I never bought into 'we have the four best teams in all of football here' ... it's hard to understand what's going on with the Cowboys. There is no denying that they are very talented. The Redskins and Giants are playing well enough and were dominating some of the teams they were playing. They didn't really yesterday (Sunday). In a way, they deserve the reputations they have."
  • On the strategy at the trade deadline: "We've said for years that we're always looking for ways to improve the team every year at the trade deadline as well as on an every-day basis we're doing that. I do think the Chiefs have confirmed that we were one of the teams that inquired about (tight end) Tony Gonzales and it's a true story. I can't go beyond that or talk about any other players, because they are still on their (respective) teams. Based on the comments coming out since (the trade deadline) and this was our read of the situation when we got in touch (with Kansas City) was that they really did not want to trade him. It didn't mean that if there was something that had blown them away they wouldn't have been interested in terms of somebody being willing to overpay. But the read we had from the beginning was that they were very reluctant, although they felt compelled based on his request (to be traded) to at least listen to offers they got. I guess in the end they made the judgment that none of the offers they got were good enough."
  • On the idea of 'going for it' and overpaying for a player in a trade: "It's a meaningless term to me. We're 'going for it' every day of the year, as are more teams. If 'going for it' means would we do something stupid, then I hope the answer to that is no. If 'going for it' is, would we look for every opportunity to try to be aggressive and try to make it happen ... the answer to that is always yes."
  • On the Roy Williams trade to Dallas: "They paid a lot. Time will tell. I wouldn't pay that much for a player like that -- and I think he is a very good player, so I don't mean that as if he isn't -- but that's a major step.
  • On signing LB Tracy White and releasing RB/FB Tony Hunt: "The addition we made we think will help us on special teams. It's an area in which we've been looking in since training camp for opportunities to bring anybody in that can upgrade that. We had an opportunity and we had a player graded that could make a difference so we went out and picked him up. As far as Tony Hunt, it is a disappointment whenever you make a so-called first day pick and he doesn't work out."
  • On the fullback situation: "I just think the fact that you've seen as much change there tells you that we're not completely satisfied, at least to this point. (Dan) Klecko is getting his shot now and we'll see how he does. He has what you want there. He's a big, strong guy who plays hard and just has a phenomenal attitude about everything and wouuld do anything for the team. I think when you see us making that making changes at a position, it tells you we're still searching for the answer."
  • On the injured players returning to the lineup and what it means: "We started the year with a very talented team and we've had some ups and downs with how we've actually performed on the field. We've had a couple of breaks that didn't go our way. Adding to that group with additional quality players, quality character guys, you have to be optimistic going forward. We should be able to get on a roll here."

There was more, of course. Banner talked about the possibility of extending some players' contracts, but did not get into specifics. The Eagles have some serious questions with both Jon Runyan and Tra Thomas due to be unrestricted free agents along with tight end L.J. Smith and safety Brian Dawkins. The Eagles have always been interested in retaining starters and keeping continuity. From this year to next year, that may not be the case.

Or it may be. Things will play out in the next several weeks, on the field and off the field.

"I wish we weren't 3-3 right now. This is not the ideal position to be in, having completed the schedule we've completed," said Banner. "Everybody here would agree with that. But we're still good enough, and we're in a position to get on a roll,  get some players back healthy, that we still have a chance to really do something.

"I like the football team a lot. I think the passion that they play with, and the effort and everything is phenomenal. I wish the results so far would have been better, and we are in a bit of a hole in our division and around the NFC ... but I look at the team and I ... still think we're as good as anybody out there."

BACK FROM THE BYE WEEK AND ...

  • The reports from practice on Brian Westbrook, Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown, along with the other injured players, were very positive. There are many questions remaining, including how the Eagles plan to use Westbrook and Curtis and Brown, but the news was all positive on Monday. Well, all but Shawn Andrews. Still no practice for him. Still no words of progress. I can't tell you much of anything about Andrews and his health status.
  • What I know about the Falcons: Very well coached. Disciplined on offense with a good running game. Outstanding young quarterback who is playing with great poise. A defensive front seven that is nasty. Excellent special teams. This is a good football team coming in here on Sunday.
  • Think about this: Westbrook has 194 yards rushing through the first six games of the season. That's just an absurdly low number, so it is with great anticipation that Westbrook is on track to play Sunday. How much different is this team with Westbrook on the field?
  • Klecko is the fullback, wth rookie Jed Collins on the practice squad as a fallback. Klecko is one of those guys who goes one million miles per hour, and if you knew him you would like him a lot. I wonder how much the bye week helped Klecko learn just a little bit more about the fullback position.
  • Key player for the Eagles to contain on Sunday: defensive end John Abraham. He is re-born with seven quarterback sacks.

Unreal. This guy still thinks this team is the Gold Standard. What a joke. Then this mouthbreather takes a shot at a Cowboys franchise that has flat out STEPPED ON this Eagles franchise for decades. Joe, they have 5 SUPER BOWL championships. The Eagles have none. The Giants have 3, the Redskins have 3. Approximately 25% of all of the Super Bowls have been won out of the NFC East and the Eagles have none of them. The arrogance that comes from the coaching staff and front office of this team is baffling, you guys have won NOTHING!!!!!! It makes it very tough to be a supporter of this franchise.

Eviladam420 - You might want to find some real 420...that stuff your smoking is clouding your brain. How many Super Bowl rings do the Beagles have? Zero - Right? You guys are THE ONLY NFC EAST TEAM without a ring. Speaking of clowns...save your outfit for Halloween. Enjoy and have a great week!

Hey Joe Banner! So what if the Cowboys haven't won a playoff game in 12 years. At least they have WON MULTIPLE SUPER BOWLS. Try winning one first before ragging on another team. You are a classic J O K E!

No I do not think AR is ok with just being a .500 team "campanellad". He knows just like McNabb knows that his career will be defined by bringing a ring to Philly.

I don't think the back injury is caused by his depression, but facing the fact that they are having problems solving the issue, it could very well be setting him back into a depression. I think knowing an injury may end my pro-bowl career if a solution can't be found would definitely affect me if I was him. I think the problem might be that the latest specialist might be recommending surgery on his herniated discs, and they are trying to find a temporary solution without resorting to that and ending his season, and save the surgery for the off-season.

beth- a agree whoever says there were no moves to be made is naive. Joe is all about the future and i will not let him blow any more smoke up my a## and u shouldnt either. We coulda had one of the best TE to ever play the game going forward and we f####d it up. 2nd round give it to them. that would open up so much as well as have a reliable guy in RZ on 3rd down, things we really struggle with. I also heard something that caught my attention last night doing MNF and Jaws said, "some coaches are happy with a 8 to 9 win season, but not bill belicheck.." HMMMM first thing that comes to mind is our 8-8 season last year and who talks with Andy more than anyone? JAWS! and that's why we are a competitive team, NOT a superbowl team. difference is competitive teams compete for a superbowl. superbowl teams win MULTIPLE superbowls.

Hey lion did you watch any of the videos yesterday (10/20). Someone posted a comment on another page saying "Whatever the reasons are the FO isn't saying & Spadaro eluded yesterday to the fact that he KNOWS but will NOT say.". This was on the andrews injury. Now again i am wondering what that is all about. Why is he unwilling to talk about it? or is this somthing that is taken out of context? I just cant help but think about all the depression stuff. If the backspasms r real then fine. But still i wonder a little if it is cover for somthing else. What do you think?

Don't feel too bad, others have done the same. I spoke up before, and JB added to that with his own back experiences. Thankfully MJG is filling in adequately in his absence, and that can only benefit us in the future. I keep hoping to hear Andrews is finally making progress, but we can only take it a week at a time. Let's get them Falcons.

No problem. I'm on here a lot so I guess I catch some of the conferences you miss I guess. Latest word I have was after the 49'ers game, Andrews was seeing his 3rd specialist...the same one that did Tra's back surgery. Backs are problem the most difficult injury to diagnosis and heal. There's a reason on jobs where you have to do a lot of lifting that safety committees preach proper lifting techniques. A back injury can be minor, or it can be something that stays with you for a lifetime. In Andrew's case, if they can't find a solution it could end his career. Just food for thought.

Kevin....with back spasms (and speaking from personal experience), it can cause you to lose strength in your arms and your legs during the spasm. Spasms can pull on the skeletal and tendons putting pressure on nerves affecting your arms and legs since most of these nerves run through the back first. Trying to play with reduced strength...not a good idea. One of the main treatments is muscle relaxers to get the spasms to subside to take the pressure off the nerves. Playing on muscle relaxers, again, not a good idea. And surgery is always considered a last option because of the risks involved. Doubt seriously Andrews is lazing his injury...it took a specialist 3 tries with different medications, each with a wait and see how this works before trying a stronger attempt and I'm avg weight. I can imagine its harder to find the right dosage for someone Andrew's size. And we have been updated...it's always just no improvement. I have a feeling it may be serious enough to consider surgery like Tra had, but they are trying to avoid it since it would end his season, but so far it isn't working.

With westy we get news on his injury. With curtis we get news on his injury. With brown we get news on his injury. With Andrews we dont here ****. I personaly think he is a lazy punk the only reason his back is sore is because he has a lump in the couch he has been laying on. Anyone else remember all the depression nonsence in the preseason? I love andrews as much as any other eagles fan. So i know a bunch of you are going to call me out for talking **** but i dont care what the F is going on with this guy and why r we geting no news if it is a legitament injury. If we have the big kid on the goalline we might be 5-1. Other than him i am excited about our eagles and i think even without him if we play to our full potential we should be very dangerous. Its all about excicution now and some good play calling by the coaching staff. lets rip apart the falcons like an eagle would. GO EAGLES!!! P.S. Anyone else thinking what i am thinking about andrews? Just give us some damn updates and i will stop speculating. I wonder if andy has lost faith in him because of his heart. Is this yet another example of modern nfl players having all the phsyical tools and no heart to use them?

No there were really no moves to make. Roy W. and Tony G. were the only two people we could of made a move on and it didn't work out. That's fine... Our team has the talent to win the SB... period... Mcnabb, B.West, D. Jack, K. Curtis, and yes H.Baskett on the Offensive side. T.Cole, Parker, Samual, S.Brown, Bradley, and Quinton. There money baby... They just have to play consistent.

I think that Joe still should have made some moves to improve the team so we can get a shot a the playoffs or yet the Super Bowl.TG would have been a great pick up to help improve the RedZone Offense because we cant keep scoring field goals all day and expect to win games and not to mention that it will take pressure off Mcnabb and Westbrook.Joe also needs to make contract extensions to our young players like Brodrick Bunkley who i think is a great run stopper and a decent pass rusher. If we are to win we gotta start making moves so we can be a contender again.Andy and Joe,word of advice:GO BACK TO THE YEAR 2004 WHEN WE HAVE GREAT PLAYERS AT EVERY POSITION,REMEMBER TERRELL OWENS,JEVON KEARSE,MICHEAL LEWIS AND ALL THE OTHER PLAYERS WE SHOULD NOT HAVE LET GO,13 AN 3,DOES IT RING A BELL?DING DING DING.I'm mad they let Donte Stallworth,he was a good WR and a deep threat.Kevin Curtis is the ONLY WR besides terrell owens that had a thousand plus yards recieving. One more thing, make Desean Jackson our starting WR,he is the truth,Sorry Reggie Brown,Nothing personal.

richleedennis...is right now really a good time for you, a cowboy fan to talk smack? I mean...you guys are just plain awful right now. You haven't won a playoff game since 1996, you hold the record for that by the way. You won superbowls in the 90's with a damn good team, but since then you suck. So stop living in the past. You're right phili has no superbowls, shame on us but at least we make playoff games. And you can have T.O. cuz he blows along with the rest of your cowboys, he's been doing a whole lot for you guys lately hasn't he...oh wait how many playoffs did he win for you guys...oh you cowboys fans..dwelling on the past.. /sigh so dumb.

That's great that you can say the Cowboys are just trying to win a playoff game and the Eagals are trying to win the Super Bowl...but lets not forget who's team has 5 World Championships and who has none!...that's right your Eagles! Especially lame when you ruled the NFC for several seasons, several years ago and still couldn't pull it off. Oh yeah, thanks for T.O. ****!

I'm love seeing Dallas getting beat, but don't get too used to it. The Cowboys are going to be there all year long. I can't see them missing the playoffs, but I would love to be wrong. Also, the Roy Williams deal will turn out to be a good one for big "D" as he will make an impact for this team this year. One of the obvious reasons you do that deal is because of T.O.'s age. He's not getting any younger. Williams has loads of talent, and he will do well there. However, that being said, we might could match up with them even once they start clicking if Lito Sheppard will actually act like he gives a damn about playin' football for the Eagles. I can't stand players like that. The bottom line is he's not doing anything but hurting himself by not trying. I hope he sees that before it's too late. About the Falcons, we must throw the ball deep to Desean Jackson. If you look at the numbers, the Eagles offense has been a big play offense so far, and I expect that to continue. One final note to the Eagles F.O.: I sure am glad we drafted Big Bad Shawn Andrews instead of that Steven Jackson guy!! Whew!! Thanks a lot for makin' the right move there. Yeah, right!
