Eagles Sign White, Release Hunt

October 14, 2008 | Last Updated: 10/14/08 7:09 PM ET | Comments (323)

The Eagles made a roster move on Tuesday, signing linebacker Tracy White. To make room for White on the 53-man roster, the team released running back Tony Hunt.

A six-year veteran, White (6-0, 238 pounds) spent the last two-plus seasons with the Green Bay Packers before being released on 10/7/08. Originally signed by Seattle as an undrafted rookie in 2003 out of Howard, White played in 20 games (two starts) with the Seahawks, recording 26 tackles and one sack. He spent the 2005 season as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, before signing with the Packers in 2006.

A strong special teams performer, White has racked up 68 career special teams tackles in 69 games, including two in the 2007 postseason, as well as a forced fumble on 1/20/08 vs. NYG. He also recovered a fumbled punt in the end zone for a touchdown on 9/9/07 against the Eagles.

A 27-year-old native of Charleston, SC, White started 44 games at Howard, leading the team in tackles all four years and becoming the school's all-time leader with 500 career tackles, adding 22 sacks and six interceptions.

Terrible move. We don't need to build special teams or the lineback position. This seems to be a move the Eagles love to make. For example, Trotter? Spikes? who by the way has made a tremendous impact for the Niners defense. Hunt wasn't going to be the all-pro back that he was with Penn State, but he would have developed into a decent full-back for us with time. Another poor release by the Eagles front office.

Will somebody please show me where Tony Hunt had potential? He couldn't run the ball very well, couldn't block very well and couldn't catch very well..sometimes ya get a bust in the draft...if it were not for his special teams play he probably would have been gone earlier.

Smartz...he didn't call a rah rah meeting....in his words he wanted to point out the inconsistant play...which was a mark of an observant leader..I think he just waited too long....this is his team, he knows better than anybody what the problem is.

Hunt had potential at fullback this is just another stupid move but in the draft we need to combine a 1st and 3rd pick to move up in the 1st round to grab Beanie Wells since Westbrook is getting older and is always hurt it makes since to grab a big bruiser with speed to split time until Westbrook is completly done and then take over full time we would be in good shape

first of all the move to put tony hunt to fb was one that i liked i felt that it gave them even more of a threat in the passing game with him and westbrook back there. To my dismass was the teams inability to put him in the games. The Eagles keep passing the ball too much and it has bit them in the @ss a few times. The bears game for example. Why is Donovan in shotgun from the 7 yard line. Andy Reid needs to take a good look in the mirror. All he had to do was call a three tight end formation and tell tony hunt to blast it through and he didnt. Then we let him go to sign a position that is not needed, almost like it was to counter what dallas did with Roy which is a player i thought the eagles could have used at the begining of the year. I like tony hunt and it angers me to see the team be so stupid

ultimately you wanna know who wins superbowls... defense defense defense. and a big back to pound it in the 4th to set up a DEPENDABLE kicker. not cross your fingers kicker and hope to god we can make a 40.

You know I've read a few of these posts. 1) The Patriots won a SB w/ Wide-outs that no one heard of. Why? Balanced attack. 2) Giants won one last yr with only Plax. Why Balanced attack. 3) Washington won their 3rd with Clark, Sander, & Monk but it was a running game that opened the skies for attack & Rypien had a field day. Any1 remember that running back. See my point? It is not big names its excecution. How many balls did our TE, WR, RB's drop vs. SF? Answer: Too d@mn3d many. Catch the ball. If #5 throws 20x's 3 will be in the ground the others are catchable, so why would he be 11-20 passing? If you have guys that can't catch maybe you should run more. Oh wait we just dropped a RB. Remember the days of the 3-headed monster (Staley, B-West, Buck)? Hmmmmm

The team has done as well this year as about any other in it's offseason moves and draft. Though I hated them trading out of the 1st round (again!), in getting D Jack we got a 1st round talent. He has outplayed anyone we could have picked at #19 this last draft. Too bad Carolina's play will probably mean a #20-#25 pick in next years. Samuel was a good pickup we all rejoiced over, and with 2 int's so far probably worth the money. Let's just hope the FO doesn't screw up next years 2 #1's.

birdcrazy your right. Its Mcnabbs fault that his recievers drop key passes. its his fault his line cant block for our running to get a yard. Shut up idiot. If Mcnabb has to call a meeting for the guys to play harder then maybe they shouldnt be playing football. Mcnabb is not personally responsible for other player getting ready for a game.

I'm so tired of people saying that the Eagles front office doesn't want to win now and that it screwed up by trading away the team's first round picks the past two years. First of all, the team signed Asante Samuel, the biggest name in free agency this year, and they aggressively sought Randy Moss, who choose to stick with the Pats (I wonder how he feels about that choice now?). Secondly, look at the players we got by trading those picks. In 2007, we got our backup QB (Kevin Kolb), our starting middle linebacker (Stewart Bradley), and a DB who is no longer with the team (CJ Gaddis), and the Cowboys got OLB Anthony Spencer; Bradley is currently tied for 13th in the league with 42 tackles, while Spencer has 6 tackles. Now tell me that trade wasn't worth it! In 2008, we got our backup DT (Trevor Laws) and a backup OL (Mike McGlynn), as well as Carolina's first round pick next year. Granted, the Panthers did get their starting tackle in Jeff Otah, but that extra first round pick next year could be huge, especially in light of the fact that Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan will be free agents after thsi season (and could even choose to retire). Whether you want to believe it or not, the fact is that football games are won and lost in the trenches, not by how many star receivers you have on your roster.

Nope Al..never..but in all fairness we haven't really seen what this team is capable of...things that piss me off..players too complecent..I blame that on DM...he took too long to call a team meeting..after all this is his team...poor execurion by players..again..ya wanna be elite then step up..on the other side of the coin..do I want to sell out the future for one MAYBE impact player for this team..NO...the talent is here, we've seen flashes of it..DM sees it too..ehat's he blame it on..consistancy...on his part and therest of them..look..these guys are paid a ton of money to do a job..they are professional athletes...rah rah from coaches rarely motivates pros..ask Steve Spurrier about that..the locker room needs to police themselves..ask Bill Belechek about that..on that part, thes guys don't do a very good job..in other words..not nearly enough of good old fashioned controlled rage.

BTW for all the longtime Eagles fans that know how Carl Peterson rolls. There is no way in hell KC was giving TG up for less than a second.

birdcrazy i agree with you that wew as fans need to chill out until we have our full complement of weapons on the field at the same time to pass judgement on our team. we have yet to see the versatility of our O because too many key components havee been missing. it would have been great to see the FO pull the trigger on an impact player, but they didn't. ballhawk it would be nice for AR or somebody to let us fans know what the team attempted to due as far as trades so that we geet a warm feeling that they give a s*** about winning now. IMO we're gonna see some exciting football after the bye once our guns are fully loaded on both sides of the ball.

Our team is good very good everybody needs to chill out. We just need everybody healthy and our offense will be very versatile. And dallas gettin roy williams is good for them but no big deal because they never had problems with offense just romo and his mistakes so i dont see how roy williams will fix that and when litos healthy, lito on roy and samuel on owens good matchups. Reid just needs to establish more of a run game cause if you watched last weeks game it really helped us get down the field

Ar...we made a bid for TG....Chiefs never intended him to be traded..We were not going to give what the Boys did for Willliams..a first , a third, and a sixth rounder...ridiculous with his numbers...that just doesn't add up..Hawk...you keep saying Curtis is not a number one..his numbers are pretty good..but I've never been sure what a "#1" is anyway..and we haven't seen what Peanut and Curtis can do with both of them on the field with Westy..but the bottom line is..even with all our guns on the field and performing well...that's no guarantee to the SB..again. you need health, and some balls bouncing your way to get to the promised land..that's the way the league is designed and why the NFL is the best sport going...parody..especially in the NFC East.

Guys, the point is the ONLY time McNabb had a TRUE number 1 guy, they went to the SB! The fact the Boys got him doesn't automatically make them the NFC representative but it does INCREASE THEIR CHANCES. And THAT'S what it's about. I'm not an Eagles fan but I do enjoy most of you guys posts, good knowledgable fans.

birdcrazy - I don't think you are getting the point. Adding a player like Roy or Tony does not mean you will win it all but it makes your team better. Take any team that has won the SB and you will see that they have added players in the draft and free agents to make the final push for the SB. You keep bring Cincy but they are a mess but it is not because of TJ or 85, they can not play D. They have no running game and the Oline sucks. Which brings me back to the Eagles B.West has maybe 3 years left and our wideouts (take out D. Jacks) are below average. At least 3 of our WRs would not make another team in the NFL. Just like Freddie Mitchell or Pinkston. Do you need more names? I just don't get how you say our WRs are great. The only reason our WRs are ok with the eagles is McNabb and because we pass almost every down. Curtis at best a #2 WR. I think he is a #3. The D. Jack is a #2 and we don't have a #1.

Just another signed bum like Rocky Boiman that wont even help us out at all. A waste of time and the deadline was not well spent. The eagles should of went for Roy Williams but screw up like always.

I have never called for the firing NOW, in my posts I have said if we lose Reid will be terrible because of the team make-up. I have said something needs to happen if things dont change, like getting the last couple pieces we need. WILLIAMS and HOUSH would definitely be upgrades. I am not sure why our front office wont admit this or spend more to get those pieces, my guess is they love being under the cap so they have a larger profit. That to me is not a sports franchise, that is a fortune 500 co who is looking to short stock holders or some crap. I think Gonzo would be a legit upgrade, and a new ST coach is not unheard change or demote him, SEAGREST SUCKS!! As for Reid and JJ all I have ever said is they out think themselves too much. We are what we are FORCE people to conform to our game style.

hawk...to call for the firing or changing of the coaching staff and FO in the first quarter of a season is idiotic. Can you...or anybody for that matter..guarantee me a SB ring if we'd gone out and gotten Williams or TG...of course you can't..no one can...we have talent and coaching...players need to execute better and DM needs to light a fire under their butts when they don't..we need to stay healthy and we need a certain amount of good fortune..( like the Girls, Skins, and Giants all losing) Realistic changes I'd like to see..play with some heart and urgency the rest of the way..

I only have one problem with this move, the premise is that by adding another good special teams player our unit should get better... Isn't that what we have been doing this whole season with players like Tank Daniels, D Jax, Quinten Demps etc. however I have not seen the marked improvement that I was expecting. In fact the FG unit has regressed terribly and coverage teams are HORRIBLE. So then you begin to wonder what really is the problem... and that would be the guy holding the clip board. Rory Segrest is a terrible ST coordinator and I don't know if Andy will get his head out of his A** and realize it. If your ST units can't cover on punts, block for returners, kick FGs, block for FGs then why do you still have a job?? The only saving grace for this guy is that the Eagles have enough talent with their returners and Sav Rocca that he gets good play in spite. But that isn't saying much... I bet I could get as much out of those guys as he is!
