I give the Redskins plenty of credit - they stuck with the running game even though they were in a 14 point hole (which then opened up the passing attack a bit) and wore out the Eagles D while also keeping Westbrook and McNabb off of the field. Portis had a monster game. However, the Eagles' lack of execution on offense and the coach's poor playcalling hurt them equally badly - the offense started off on fire in the first quarter and disappeared until the drive at the end of the game where they couldn't convert the 3rd and 1/2 yard play. The Cowboys and Redskins fans need to stop coming around here to try to feel better about themselves - sorry guys, but the Giants are the team to beat in the NFC East right now (unfortunately!). As I was saying before, the Eagles line play needs to improve, and Andrews needs to get healthy! Football is a game that is won and lost in the trenches, and the Eagles have been losing that battle consistently for the past two weeks. There were way too many times last weekend when the O-line couldn't get any push for Westbrook - there wer way too many times where Tra Thomas was standing around watching while Andre Carter took out Westbrook for little or no gain. The O-line cost us the Bears game, and they failed to redeem themselves when given the opportunity against the Redskins. Credit the Redskins for the stop, but also blame the O-line for lack of execution as well as Reid for the playcalling. We have a QB who is bigger than some linebackers - run a sneak on 3rd and short for crying out loud!

My first question is what are you people doing on the eagles website do you have nothing better to do as fans of other teams. Secondly i give the redskins credit but your not that good you played well we played like crap simple as that. Finally why would you bring a casket to a game bookman whos dying, its simply a game that a team won which you dont even play for so stop talkin smack. What an IDIOT.

You are so right BOOKMAN.I am a Skins fan that lives in the Philly area. It is always what the Eagles didn't do. Perhaps its the other teams not allowing the Eagles to do it. Their recievers got shut down not because their recievers drop the balls( although they do drop balls alot) but because the Skins have a good secondary. Just ask the Cowboys and Cardinals. The Eagles need to give credit where credit is due. They got beat in every asset of the game, plain and simple...

For all the fans saying that Dmac is fine and not a part of the problem you're not watching the same team that I am. Do I think he's a top 5 QB? Yes I do, he has talent, skill, and experience. What he doesn't and hasn't ever had is throwing accuracy. Although he is great at throwing it downfield, when he throws shorter passes he seems to lack the touch to hit a receiver in stride. Ever since Dmac started with this team, we have always heard "the eagles need better receivers, there are too many dropped balls, etc.". Well, after 10 years and a whole slew of receivers people are still saying the same thing, and at some point I have to believe that the common denomenator is #5. As far as I can see, the receivers never know where the ball is going to be, and usually have to contort themselves to make a catch. Sometimes a pass needs to be drilled in to beat the coverage, but a lot of times he loads up to throw a 90MPH fastball, and skims it over their heads or in the ground. I actually give our receivers a lot of credit that they catch any of the balls out of his right arm. The catch that Reggie made that led to 40 YAC yards was a terribly thown ball, that he had to stop his route, drop to dig it off the ground, and got lucky that both defenders didn't lay a hand on him. I said it in a different thread, but AR and MM should take the slant pattern out of the playbook, Dmac just can't throw it in the right place. I see just about every other team throw slants that hit the reciever in stride, which gains them an extra 5-15 yards depending on the safety coverage. I don't know if I've ever seen Dmac do that. Ever. Don't get me wrong, my bashing comes from watching the games and watching what other teams are doing. I think he still has the capability to win with this team and in this league, but AR has to stop dreaming that he is a good WC QB, because he isn't-his short throws are just too erratic to ever be truly successful in that scheme. They need to throw in a more balanced ground attack with a healthy dose of vertical passing. And LJ is done as far as I'm concerned, he drops too many passes and puts too many balls on the ground. He no longer has the speed to get away from a LB, which is why he's been mostly absent from the stat sheets.

Westy isn't a 300 carries a year back...come to think of it very few are any more. What we need is more depth to fill in when he either needs a break or to run in the situations he's not adept at ie. short yardage and goal line. Maybe with one of our 2 1st rounders we can grab a solid rb to help on those situations. Don't get me wrong the NFL is a passing league and I'm not suggesting we run just for the sake of running but in order for us to get where we need to, want to go, we have got to become more efficient at running the ball.

The main problem with our team is that we are inconsistent. We can't finish a game. We can be up 14-0 and we lack the offensive production in the 3rd and 4th quarters, especially in the redzone. Then we must rely on field goals, which Akers has shown lack of ability not only the past few weeks, but since last season as well. Marty and Andy also need to get this offensive of play calling fixed, because the calls that are being made at the end of games and during a 2-minute drill are absolutely horrible. If this continues I see us going 8-8 once again.

clucas20 10/07/08 10:22 am ET |
ronedog, I hear you. I'm not a huge fan of the past first philosophy. I'm just saying it can work if the players execute. I still maintain that our teams biggest issue is a lack of mental toughness. Back to your offensive philosophy change for second. We definitely have the O-line to pound the ball... which would help our smallish defense a lot. But do you really think Westy can hold up for a full season?

What always amazes me is the credit NOT GIVEN to the other team. Do you think there are only 11 players on the field? There are 11 more that you idiots completely ignore.
The Eagles game plan was not flawed. Their execution of that plan was flawed. And why was their execution flawed? Because the idiots didn't know HOW GOOD THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS DEFENSE REALLY WAS!
U geniuses dont realize U COULDNT THROW THE BALL DOWNFIELD! Its not b/c the plays werent called...its b.c the coverage WAS TOO GOOD TO EXECUTE THOSE CALLS. Skins made Westbrook a non-factor..just like Marion Barber, Reggie Bush & any other running back.
Our 2ndary has been stopping pro-bowl receivers such as T.O., Fitzgerald, Boldin..so do you really think we wouldnt stop your cast of WR rejects?
U had 9 sacks against the Steelers. We gave u 1 in the 1st qtr. & u were never close enuff again to even take Campbell's dinner order.
Just like McNabb u dont want to give the other team credit FOR STOPPING YOUR GAMEPLAN.
The new BEASTS OF THE EAST. Bring all the game plans u want...we gonna continue to bring the caskets.

You no I have to agree with everyone. But I will tell you this I am sick of reading this stuff because it is all the same. Every single person is right. Andy's nose in the play calling has got to stop, D Jac only getting one catch, D on the feild way to long, O to many 3 and outs, Goal line play calling garbage. Listen all of us on here get it we all no what the problem is now why wont upper managment change this before it is too late. Well it is too late already I don't see a playoff birth again this year. The only way it may happen is if we can beat the teams in our division but I just don't see it happening

The 49ers had Joe Montana and Steve Young throwing to Jerry Rice..the Packers had Brett Favre in his prime in 96 throwing to Freeman and Brooks. Montana, Young and Favre..hall of famers(or will be). Rice, the greatest receiver of all time. Favre's receivers at the time the Packers won the championship are superior to what we trot out each Sunday. The teams you mentioned are the exception to the rule. The pass first offensive philosophy in those cases(you could include the 99 Rams..Warner,Bruce,Holt,Faulk) worked because the skill position players, particularly qb and wr, were suited for it. Can you honestly put our players in the same class with those teams? Look at nearly every other Super Bowl champion since the games inception and what do you find? A solid if not great running game, a good(sometimes great, sometimes average..Dilfer or B.Johnson just to name 2) quarterback that managed the game and an above average if not great defense. We have a developing defense in place that could be Super Bowl quality. We can have a good running game if used correctly(and with a healthy Westy and Andrews) and we have a good qb who throws very few int's, though to fit the championship mold would need to complete a higher % of passes. What is missing here? The right offensive philosophy!

clucas20 10/07/08 9:30 am ET |
I would have to disagree that our style of play doesn't lend itself to winning championships. The 49ers and Packers did just fine with very similar styles. This Eagles team, just like last years, appears to me to be mentally weak. Trying to score from the 1 yard line is as much about "want to" as it is about talent.

I have been a reader of these posts for several years but never a contributor. It seems interesting to me that many of the people who were writing on here during preseason and after the Rams game are absent. Any of the comments that the majority of my fellow Eagles fans have posted here would have been highly censured by those who were on here in preseason. Where have they all gone with the Super Bowl talk...and fully discrediting anyone with a differing opinion. Anyway...just an observance. Making changes at this point in the season to a fairly competitive 2-3 team is probably unrealistic. With that being said..and as much as I like him I agree that Andy has lost his touch. He seems overmatched, even confused at crucial points in games. He makes odd decisions that more often than not turn out bad. His philosophy on offense (an over commitment to the passing game) has never proven a reliable mixture to win an NFL championship. If he gains 7 yards on first down via a run or pass(as happened twice on Sunday) he automatically passes on the next 2 downs(as happened on Sunday-neither of which produced a 1st down). Andy...think sustained drives, give your defense a chance. Unfortunately my post,as all of yours, is not read by Lurie or Banner or Reid. We're (just) fans who are happy when we win and angry when we lose! Well maybe Andy or Jeff or Joe should read these posts, see beyond our anger and frustration and get a sense of our passion for the team and for some of the quality thoughts we (just) fans can have. Sorry for this lengthy and meandering diatribe I'm so frustrated with this team I could write a book.

The biggest problem with offensive is Shawn Andrews being out. His absence is the biggest factor - other than playcalling - in the lack of a running game. I've been saying it for a while, but I think Thomas and Runyan are done after this year. Andrews and Herremans will be the new tackles - Andrews projected as a tackle in the draft and was listed as G/T on the team's depth chart from time to time, and Herremans played fairly well at T during his rookie season when Thomas had the back injury. Jean-Gilles and Nick Cole could be the guards, but I'm more inclined to belive that the team will look to draft a guards with at least one of those two first round picks next year.

I called it AGAIN.
I knew we were in over our heads because we were playing an old school team that can run the football whenever they choose.
The Eagles are a finesse team and play like we are a bunch of girls. They can't get the tough yards when they need them.
And the QB joking and laughing it up on the sideline when his team is getting it's butt kicked is not a good thing either.

THE O LINE IS THE ENTIRE PROBLEM IN PHILLY.
Andy, Marty and Castillo, please I beg of you, please shake up practice for the O line and change the offense.
The Eagles have one of the biggest lines in the NFL yet year after year they don't produce a decent running attack. Year after year is the same old story. I'm sick of watching it as a lifelong Eagles fan. Its not the RB's so forget blaming it on them.
Here is a simple solution starting this week in SF.
1. PLAY SMASH MOUTH FOOTBALL: Take a page out of Joe Pa's playbook at Penn State and go to the run early and often. Make the O line miserable in practice all day every day until they start producing consistent 100+yd runners week after week. These guys should be ashamed of their efforts recently not ripping heads off of other teams with their size and experience.
2. FORGET WESTBROOK: Hand the ball to Tony Hunt and Buckhalter and pound the rock. Westbrook is amazing and the best back in the NFL hands down IF he is on the field, no one can cover him or tackle him if he has a hole or open field, but he's busted up so use him sparingly until he gets healthy. You gotta get off the Westbrook every play mentality.
3. CASTILLO WAKE UP THE O LINE: Piss these complacent over paid guys off. Stop feeding them twinkies or something. Don't let them watch Sex in the City or whatever other pansy shows they are apparently watching at nights before games. Make them watch Braveheart or MMA all night all week, wake these guys up. Something is seriously wrong with these guys in the run game with all that talent and size.
4. MARY and REID CHANGE THE OFFENSIVE PLAYCALLING: Both of you are too predictable, how many times can you call the Westbrook screen? or run up the middle without the O line moving anywhere. Get the O line guards pulling or moving to knock someone on their a$%. I can't believe the O line is the entire problem. Give McNabb a break out there. Joe Pa is 81 and he still has a better game plan than the Eagles. YOU HAVE TO RUN THE BALL AND CAN"T GIVE UP ON IT EVERY GAME. Rip the O line a new one if it really is their fault.
5. CHANGE DRAFT PHILOSOPHY ON O LINE: Draft smaller O line players if this line can't get it done THIS YEAR. Get guys with motors that don't quick or guys that don't take off plays. Our O line is embarassing concerning the run game for their size and supposed talent.
6. Someone tell Donovan to throw to LJ or Celek. Whats up McNabb you don't "trust" these guys? Every team in our division throws to their TE and kills us. Get off your high horse and call their numbers 10 times a game at least.
Another disappointing week of avoiding ESPN and NFL Live because of our O line, lack of run game and coaching, at least the Phillies give me hope....
I hate bleeding green.

look i think the issue is with the OL. Thought so and said so since training camp, and that Justice should play to keep these guys fresh during the games. That said, we all have been thru this over the years. Eagles play great late in the season. I believe as usually Reid will straighten it out. He does it every year. and the small problems aiding the losses can be corrected. a little concerned, but not worried. But I agree with the guy who said the Eagles need to draft a real back. Mendenhall I agree would hae been a great choice. Things times westbrroke is out , not playing weel and the Eagles offense goes south, it would be great to put a back out there like a Mendenhall or a white to bust chops.

I believe things will start to improve for us really soon. Maybe its false optimism but Reid seemed more sincere in this PC. Westbrook needs to sit against sf. if he is hurt all he will do is expose himself to more injury. We dont look to have a great shot at climbing back in this division but it will be next to impossible with west getting hurt and being out longer after the bye. As a fan I cant remember a season that i have been more excited about a bye week. I think SA will be ready after the bye week and if west doesnt start it would be great to see formations utilizing our speed. Get DJack the ball more, he is our leading wr and seems to be the only one who is consistent while being covered at making a play. i think buck and booker would work better in a 2 back formation. Most of the plays we have success with are misdirection and this could help our struggling running game. besides both backs catch pretty well and it could add extra checkdown options for mcnabb. we cant afford to lose to sf. I think our d will do fine, im concerned about our O.

dtruppy@... 10/07/08 1:09 am ET |
You need players to win, you need a coach who puts those players in position to make plays. We have neither. Besides the few plays weve gotten form desawn Jackson this year, who had made any plays for us. Teams come into games with the intent to stop westbrook, as a coach you need to use that to your advantage and create miss matches, come out and throw one down feild to keep the defense honest, i didnt see one long pass sunday. Reid has given us hope every year since drafting McNabb so to say he must go is not the anwser. reid has to understand he has to change his appproach,he needs to commit to running the ball and using the speed on this team to his advantage, run more screens, qucik passes to the desawn at the line and let him use his ability to make a play, roll McNabb out, keep the defense guessing. This offense is the same every week, same plays over and over. Why did we trade for Booker again, because he was supposed to be a Westbrook clone, yeah he gets used a lot doesnt he, good trade. Right know Sav Roca is our best player and thats not to be funny, thats pathetic. We derserve our record and unless the players start showing heart and desire and our coach deisides to shake things up, its gonna be another 8-8- year.

Well, The first step is realizing there is a problem. Now its time for the second step.... Let's see if he changes that. He's been a good coach and got us to the bowl but he needs to change his style up a bit that seems like a less predictable andy reid. Let's hope for the best, although the fact that we're in this deep hole and that we have been plagued by injuries I seriously believe that all hope is lost... but hopefully I'm proven wrong.

medfordindians 10/06/08 11:50 pm ET |
I'm glad to see AR accepting responsibility for the poor play calling. In the first series we had excellent play calling, and we marched right down the field and scored. It was a balanced attack, and none of the plays were predictable. Then we reverted to form, and our offensive plays were predicted by the defense and we were shut down. An offensive game plan has to keep the defense guessing for 4 quarters... or at least until you are nearly certain that you're going to win... then you run to keep the clock running.
I agree that we need another grade A running back on this team. We could have picked up Lendale White 2 years ago, but we traded up for Winston Justice instead. I'd rather have White. We could have picked up Rashard Mendenhall this year, but we traded the pick for Carolina's 1st rounder next year, plus a 2nd and a 4th. You can't always get great value at running back in late rounds (like the steal we got when we picked up Westbrook in the 3rd round). We need a more consistent running game or we will never be effective in this league.
We're also undersized at defensive end. The Redskins were having no trouble running off tackle. I'm still ticked that we let McDougle go in favor of keeping a small DE like Smith. I think he could have helped against the run.

When Curtis gets back its on. Reggie Brown take a seat. Reggie got caught by a Linebacker! Sit the sideline son. Start Curtis, Jackson and Avant. Avant is slow but he has hands. Greg Lewis, sit the bench. We are gonna spank them 9ers then have a bye, give Reid and the Offense some time to regroup and we will have players back healthy. It's not the end of the world. No team has beat us. We beat ourselves. Little mistakes, we should be 5-0 people if you really look at our little mistakes that cost us 3 games. Wait til Curtis comes back. Then McNabb wil actually have a suitable Receiver with Jackson and Avant complimenting. Defense is still the Strongest in the league! Just need some on Offense. We gonna get rolling yall. Better to go through it now then at the end of the season. EAGLES all day.
