Eagles Claim Daniels To Bolster LB Depth

The Eagles spent a good part of the offseason focused on improving in two areas - creating turnovers and beefing up the special teams unit.

The Eagles' newest acquisition is a familiar face who hopes to do both.

Just one day after he was released from the New York Giants, linebacker Tank Daniels was claimed off waivers by the Eagles. The move caught Daniels "off-guard" as he was in the process of signing the papers to remain with the Giants on their practice squad.

"This is so crazy for me. I just can't believe it," Daniels said. "The one thing that I do love about both teams that I've been on is they both hate Dallas. I'm really cool with that. Even though I'm an Arkansas kid, I've never really liked the Cowboys. Fortunately enough, I've been on two teams that hate the Cowboys.

Daniels returns to Philadelphia where his NFL career began. A rookie free agent signing in 2006, he spent the first 10 weeks of his rookie season on the practice squad before joining the 53-man active roster before the battle with Indianapolis. Daniels recorded nine special teams tackles in the final six regular season contests.

In addition to helping out the special teams unit, Daniels will be the second-string strongside linebacker behind Chris Gocong. Daniels remained familiar with the Eagles' defensive scheme in New York since it was orchestrated by former Eagles assistant Steve Spagnuolo. To make room for Daniels, the Eagles released Rocky Boiman.

The 26-year-old native of Clarendon, Ark. won a Super Bowl with the Giants last season and helped provide a key turnover in the Wild Card win over Tampa Bay. He forced Bucs kickoff returner Michael Spurlock to fumble the opening kickoff of the second half and subsequently recovered the loose ball. The Giants took advantage by adding a field goal to extend their lead to 10 in an eventual 24-14 win.

"I don't think anything spectacular happened. Nobody blocked me and the guy was just running at me. I tried to make a big play, the ball came out. We eventually scored on that drive. That's probably one of my biggest plays," Daniels said.

Daniels became the first player from Division II Harding University to play in the NFL. His jersey number (No. 3) was retired by the school this past season.

Defensive end Jerome McDougle, who was released by the Eagles on Saturday, signed a one-year deal with the Giants.

It's extremely important that Eagles management, coaches, players, and fans stay focused on every play both sides of the ball and give 200%. Stay away from the hype and take each game one at a time.Stay together, play tough, hard and smart and we shall overcome! Every fan needs to be behind Andy and Donovan 200% every day.Best of Luck and kick some butt!! GO EAGLES!!

are we really worried that Ruyon or Thomas cannot block McDougle? They've practiced against this guy, on and off, for years - I don't think letting him go is something we'll regret down the road; as we have with Burgess. My disappointment is that they didn't find space for Studebaker. He is going to be very special and I'm stunned he cleared waivers - so I"m glad he is on our practice squad, for now at least - but other teams can sign him off our practice squad even though they did not claim him off waivers. Does anyone know if the Eagles can keep him if another team tries to sign him off our practice squad? Perhaps by offering him a spot on the 53 man roster?

I am glad to have Tank Daniels back. It's always nice to take one away from the Giants. Daniels will give them a heads up to what's going on in the mind of the Giants coaching staff. Mark http://myteamrivals.typepad.com/eaglesnest/

What makes clemons a keeper? oh yeah we just automatically give him a four million signing bonus. outside of those eight sacks last year, do you really know where he stands?

mmox, we can throw around jabs at each other all day if you want. Quotes like "talking about him family" are one specific reason why you shouldn't post. Another is that you need to learn not everyone agrees with you. I never said he didn't do anything right, only that he is considered a great coach and I think that's because of McNabb. Don't forget the wasted timeouts, clock mismanagement, lack of adapting to the other team at halftime. I also never said he couldn't pick talent, although I seem to recall a no-talent QB he brought with him from GB in his first year...oh yeah, Doug Pederson, who QUIT football after he got nicked up 2 years later when he went back to GB. Also, I happen to believe family comes first and he should have taken a leave of absence when his kids got in trouble w/o him around, therefore the reference to it. How about you try listening to other people's opinions for a change. You can have yours and still let others have theirs too.

I still don't understand you letting a defensive coordinator go from your team to a team within your own division. It seems to me McD was gone long before we even know. We just got him in shape for the Giants. And if I was him I'd want to make it clear The Eagles made a mistake. I think this deal with Daniels and McD. was worked up already. Why didn't we let go of Boiman and keep McD? Instead we let go Of McD to make room for Daniels. Guys we're just frustrated. We just had to make sure the Giants have another pass rusher!! McD pressed through all that adversity, played his butt off so spags can sack the crap out of Mcd again this year. Oh yeah do you really believe in Winston Justice?

As A Miami Hurricane fan I know what McDougal can do. He WAS the best pass rusher that the Eagles had besides Trent Cole. On third and long with cole on one side and Jerome on the other , no team could block them both. McDougal is a pass rush specilist and is not great agaist the rush, but mark my words you will see him sack Mcnabb this year. I luv AR, but like all humans he dosen't always make the right choices. If he did we would have a SB ring or 2. It was so obvious that the G-men would pick him up...some times you need to keep people to prevent that. Just pray that we don't have to use Winston Justice at all, or Jerome will have a six sack Game.

Man, I love this team but we have some of the stupidest and biggest crybabies fans in football. Please can it about the McDougle. The guy as been a bench warmer 1 good preseason does not automatically translate into OMG KEEPER! If you guys are so sick of the moves the Eagles make then please feel free to jump on some teams bandwagon that will make you happy.

I'm stunned at the 'we should keep McDougel' camp.... Do people really think they know more than AR and JJ? Question: Where was McDougal the last few years? Answer: the bench. He couldn't beat out Parker for the backup and doesn't have half the talent of Abirimiri, so he is at BEST the third best Eagles at that spot. So, CC had 8 sacks last year and we sign him. Not sure, but I think thats more than McDougal has in his entire career. So what CC has not played yet, JJ and AR like him more than McDougal (AKA I do great against backups, but don't show up in games). Withall the DE injuries at NY, I wonder where McDougal will fit in?

d_engle - this is a good one, but the Shepard, Brown, Lewis, Westbrook draft was the best in my book. I even think that last years was really good -

hipper - I love your logic, and intelligence. Let me guess, Harvard, Managment or Public relations? .... AR won COY when McNabb went down and Garcia came in. AR will look good when McNabb, Garcia, and almost any other QB NOT named Feely plays. He's a good coach and it shows in with pro w/l record. BTW, really low class talking about him family. That's a scum bag move.

well said Behr...pretty much wraps it up for me...McD played real well and now he is a Jint...but the decision was the right one...as Les Bowen said a week or so ago..."so the Eagles keep him and he's out by week 3?"...paraphrasing...boiman is gone with the addition of Tank...maybe Studebaker makes it through waivers and the PS (doubt it...but it's happened before)...we are going to be fast...hard-hitting...and young...

I'm getting so tired of people complaining about the moves the Eagles make. When are Eagles fans going to start trusting this team. Reid and Heckert make great decisions every year that keep this team competitive and give you idiots, who continually b!#ch and moan about everything, the best possible team to root for. You know what, Jimmy Rollins is right about Philly fans. STAND BY YOUR TEAM. THEY KNOW MORE THAN YOU ANYWAY. GO EAGLES!!!!!!

It looks like the Eagles had a nice draft with some good young talent coming in. With that said, huge mistake on McDougle. This is a guy they spent draft picks on to move up into the 1st round in 2003. They get nothing in return. It looks like the guy is finally healthy and they basically hand him to the Giants who were desperate for a DE. I sure hope one of the four remaining healthy DE's don't get nicked early. That will make this move look really stupid. I just don't get it.
