What I Think I Know About The Eagles

Now we can really hone in on the regular season and what awaits the Eagles. They have some business to conduct: 14 players must be cleared from the existing roster to reach the 53-man limit by Saturday at 6 p.m. You know that. They know that. The Eagles aren't going to get the news out much, if any, earlier than that as they exhaust every opportunity to improve the team.

So we wait. And while I'm killing time, I'm here thinking about this and that ...

  • What are the weaknesses on this defense? I'm looking at the Rams, and I see a team with an excellent running back in Steven Jackson, a good quarterback in Marc Bulger and fine receivers. The Eagles have to dominate at the line of scrimmage. And I'm looking specifically at the Trent Cole-Orlando Pace battle. Cole is now a Pro Bowl player. Certain prestige and a new level of expectation comes with that. Pace has had a rough go of it in the last year, but he a pro's pro. To me, then, the Eagles can match up fine with the Rams receivers, and the linebackers are going to have their sights set on Jackson. It comes down to the defensive line. Always does, anyway.
  • If the Eagles decide to come out and run the football next Sunday, I won't complain. I would love to see the offense spread the field and give Brian Westbrook some cracks against a defense that would then have to tackle Westbrook in the open field. Without Kevin Curtis, the Eagles are without a weapon in the passing game. I think Westbrook's work load is going to be considerable early in the season.
  • General Manager Tom Heckert holds a conference call on Saturday at 6 p.m., so maybe we will find out then about the condition of guard Max Jean-Gilles. He went down late on Thursday night. It is the one piece of news that is still hanging out there as the process of the roster trimming is conducted.
  • Feeling good about the quarterback situation? It's hard not to be optimistic. Donovan McNabb looks tremendous and is primed to lead the offense to a big season. Kevin Kolb clearly has made huge strides since his rookie campaign. A.J. Feeley is a seasoned professional who is as accomplished as any third-team quarterback in the league. When is the last time there hasn't been a whisper of an Eagles quarterback controversy all the way through training camp and the preseason?
  • My guess is that the cornerback trio of Asante Samuel, Sheldon Brown and Lito Sheppard will play about 65 percent of the time next Sunday. I see the Rams going with three wide receivers for much of the game. And at the end of the day, nobody is going to care about which cornerback didn't start or how the corners are lined up.
  • I've been scouring the names that have been released and nothing is exciting yet. No, Rosevelt Colvin is not a fit at linebacker for this team. If the Eagles need to add a linebacker, it should be somebody who can come in and help right away on special teams.
  • Did anyone notice David Akers' kickoffs on Thursday night? The first three landed at the goal line or a yard or two in the end zone, and the fourth kickoff went to the 5-yard line. There is no question that Akers has improved his leg strength since last season.
  • A key player to watch in the week ahead is defensive end Chris Clemons. He needs to get back on the field for this defense. It just helps so much when he is out there in the nickel and the Eagles can line up four ends to rush the passer. Without Clemons, the Eagles lose some inside punch when they go after the quarterback. This is a role Bryan Smith has to grow into during the season. Whether he lines up at end or inside at tackle, Smith has to provide a consistent pass rush and be someone the Eagles can relay upon. Smith sure has improved a great deal since April. How much farther can he go during the regular season?
  • Any injuries around the league to watch? The Cowboys lost third receiver Sam Hurd for at least the first week of the season with an ankle injury. The Giants have some bumps and bruises and the Redskins have questions with a handful of players. St. Louis has some players, including cornerback Fakhir Brown, who are iffy for this game.

Pats aren't even sniffing the playoffs this year so that takes away the credibility of the cowboy prediction. Get your popcorn ready!

Sorry Shill, gotta disagree with you on the DE's. The reason we would keep 6 is because we are strong on quality DE's and can rotate to keep them fresh so they don't slow down during the game on the pass rush....the reason we keep 7 is just until Abi is ready to return. As far as weakness with our DE's go is we haven't seen much of Clemmons due to injury so far (another reason I think we will keep 7 until Abi returns).

Speaking of beer knowledge, Budweiser was recently sold to a Belgian company - Budweiser is gourmet to Europeans - yeah, ridiculous, they love it over there. On that LB prediction of mine- just a thought, shouldnt've used that 'p' word, I love our 5 LBs, and think Gocong will be fine. I agree that teams will go at our LBs, but I think we're weaker at DE than LB. Clemons, Howard, McDoogie and Smith- what's the chance they all pan out well. Half of them? I'm being realist here, I think we wouldn't be talking keeping 6 or 7 if we were strong. For the LBs, we're talking 5 over 6 cause we are strong...

Welp... Gaither IS a Will. Thats his spot. He played well as a Rook 2 years ago there. But he's playin soft. I know Gaither can play... but I haven't seen it yet. We need his playmakin from that chase LB. Just have to wait and see what happens in the games. I like Gaither and I'm sure he will play like he should. Just sayin...

Yeah JB I like Demps at F/S and K/O returns. If Dawk lasts the year and Q/D's blocking improves,he'll make a fair replacement, if he doesn't get over exhuberent and over extend his coverage. We don't need him at C/B, but knowlege is an asset.

But... NO DOUBT... OC's will 'stress' the LB's from play 1. They will be all over them. Run and pass. Runs that look like passes. Passes that look like runs. They will give our LB's the business EVERY game. Thats our weak spot. No doubt about it.

JB... if you remember correctly, I voiced some concern on #96 moving back to WILL, and you're right he has been disappointing so far cause he seems out of position for making the tackle on run plays.

Atvcar) they did a segment about that incident on 'myth busters'... They weren't allowed to ride in the car so they made it radio controlled. They followed it in a helicopter that was doing something like 160 MPH and the big old boat was pulling away from it. I think it was like a Monte Carlo or something like that. It was pretty cool. They had an episode on last week regarding the supposed staging of the moon landing, but I didn't get to watch it. I wonder how that one turned out.

atv))) Nope. I don't like Demps at CB. I mean... maybe in a year or two. I think he's a FS. Facing the QB mostly. He seems to read and jump. I like Demps at FS someday. Maybe... 2 or 3 years? === I like Mays... but not this year. He just plain outplayed Pago and he will be good someday. But a Rook MLB? Thats kinda crazy. Bradley kinda did it... but thats VERY unusual. === Good idea. But that won't work. === Another thing that I'm not sure I touched on... this may sound weird. But Bradleys height is HUGE for us. We haven't had those BIG, LONG LB's that... say... the Pats have. It's hard to throw underneath on that size. And we have seen it already this year. They are getting to those underneath TE routes and slants. I like Bradley. He might be more of a natural Buck. But Gocong is our guy there. === If Gocong goes down... Bradley and Gaither will slide with Jordan chasin from the Will. I like those 5 LB's. Best we have had in years. Since Evans and Thomas/Joyner days. === But on the otherhand... I'm not thrilled with Gaithers play. After I watched the games closely... he's average so far. Surprising to me. Thought he would be our best. === We are about to find out if Gaither is a real TEAM leader or not. We need hm to play better.

Doc... I agree, not fair to 55. He has a long way to go yet. He played like what 50 snaps at MIKE in regular season games? I know JJ loves him and that's good enough for me, but he will make his share of mistakes this year, and that should be expected. Hopefully after the bye week the group is hitting their stride for the stretch run and playoffs. But no question they are our weakest position on D at the start of the season.

You guys are going to love where Cindy McCain's fortune came from - Beer! Her family owns beer distributorships for Anheiser Busch. So 99 you got beer confused with Ketchup. Bri, you have to live with your decisions as the front office must do but the main purpose of the post is it is better to have first choice then scraps. Not saying there couldn't be any mistakes.

Morning guys: I guess I got enough coffee to get my heart pumping. Now that the palpitations have started the brain is engaged. Watched the game last night and I think we've covered it all. Irony that so many cuts are made after decent performances. Pressure does have a beneficial effect, although self motivation and initiative makes the difference. Spent about an hour digesting all of the posts since 7PM yesterday and judging by the line-ups we're all pretty close now. Expecting alot of controversy after the final cuts, me included. I'll say a few things aside from Football while we're waiting for the final cuts. Laughed at your comments relative your political source of intel JB. Wednesday, while I sitting in the VA Pharmacy waiting for my, "monthly dope," an old veteran(V/N era), sitting across from me, obviously out of it and talking to himself, was saying things that had nothing to do with me personally, but in effect, highlighted and addressed the "factors," on an administrative level, containing substanate material, I was currently dealing with. Amazed yes, but as a "Spiritual Person," I wasn't surprised. His mind was obviously gone, (maybe a good thing)but without going through the details, what flowed through him was remarkable. Political musings while we wait. Cindy McCaine, an old "Barbie Doll," She may be getting old to him, but the money isn't! The "Hot Redneck Governor", Sarah Palin, will imprint youth and enthusiasm on him, probably short circuiting his wiring and burning him out. Then what will we have when we have her for president? Michelle's not my type and looks like a "Hayseed," the way she contorts her face, mouth and nose!(I'm still for Obama)I'll be optimistic relative his staff. I'll check back with you Guru's periodically. Watched the "Football Journal," on cable last night they didn't even have the Eagles in the playoffs, 8 & 8? Same with their site,www.profootballweekly.com. SI's "Banks," has the Cowboys winning the division title and beating the Pat's in the Superbowl???

JB... a hole is too good for them, but I guess you gotta put them somewhere, right? Reminds me of a story I read like 8 years ago. I moron strapped one of those rocket boosters the the Air force uses on aircraft carriers for extra boost on takeoff to the top of his car. He picks out a stretch of road he "thinks" is long and straight enough. Then he lights the booster and WHOOSH off he goes until the road runs out and he goes smashing into a mountain. Now here's the kicker, when the went through the debris the found the brakes had been ground completely down... guy tried hitting the brakes to stop his impending doom. Gotta love the winners of the Darwin award!
