RB Moats Among Eight Released

August 29, 2008 | Last Updated: 8/29/08 1:23 PM ET | Comments (35)
By: CHRIS McPHERSON

Running back Ryan Moats was one of eight players released on Friday as the Eagles have to get to the NFL-mandated roster limit of 53 by 6 PM (EST) Saturday. The current roster stands at 67 players. The other seven players let go were wide receivers Bam Childress and Jamal Jones, cornerbacks Therrian Fontenot and Nick Graham, safety Marcus Paschal, guard Stefan Rodgers and linebacker Pago Togafau.

A third-round pick of the Eagles out of Louisiana Tech in 2005, Moats enjoyed his greatest success as a rookie when he finished tied for the team lead in rushing touchdowns (3) and was second in rushing yards (278) despite just playing in seven games. Last year, Moats suffered a season-ending ankle injury that forced him to spend the year on the injured reserve list. Moats sat out Thursday's preseason finale against the Jets with an ankle injury, but was already caught in a numbers crunch with a very deep stable of running backs. Due to the injury, Moats was waived/injured.

Three contributors from last year's 8-8 team were also released - Graham, Paschal and Togafau. All three were rookie free agents last season. Graham and Paschal were originally signed by the Eagles and made their mark primarily on special teams. Togafau was originally signed by the Cardinals last season, but was picked up by the Eagles after he was released in the final roster cutdown.

Childress and Jones were signed by the Eagles this past offseason. Both were intriguing because of previous NFL experience - Childress with the Patriots and Jones with the Saints.

 Player (Position)

 Comment

Bam Childress (WR)  Touchdown vs. Jets nice way to end preseason
Therrian Fontenot (CB)  Physical corner, was fun to watch at training camp
Nick Graham (CB)  Not enough improvement from '07 rookie free agent
Jamal Jones (WR)  Hard-working receiver slowed by injury in preseason
Ryan Moats (RB)  Speedy back should find job, too much depth on roster
Marcus Paschal (S)  Rookie free agent last year with game experience
Stefan Rodgers (G)  Another good player caught up in numbers crunch
Pago Togafau (LB)  Entered camp as backup MIKE, but lost job to Joe Mays

Eagles phans....What is the deal with our team never getting a good receiver(except for TO, and we made the super bowl that year)? Aside from injury, McNabb still has a hell of an arm! When you have that type of talent of a QB, it must be supported with the talent of an awesome reveivers....I mean look at what the Patriots did this past season for a 4th round pick for Moss....A record 22 TD for Moss....Raiders....LOL....

I was sad to see Ryan Moats cut, but besides that the other 7 guys were expected... I just open that they keep King Dunlap. He's the biggest offensive linemen they have, besides John Ruynan. Yes big doesn't make u an offensive lineman, but I hope they give him an opportunity and a chance to see what he's got!!!

As I understand it the 3 other teams in our division all made the playoffs last year, so there would be little chance of our cuts to end up on their rosters and come back to haunt us, as all of the lesser teams get to chose before them from the waiver wire. Any thoughts?

good point Iwwolf44 the eagles aren't worried by who picks up the cut players. theres going to be 32 teams with cuts for one reason or another and theres a good chance that somebody that didn't work in another teams system might be perfect in thiers. the eagles have options man mad options so I don't worry about it I trust their decision makings. they have put themself in a great situation this year to get back to the superbowl plus they still have 2 first round picks and their second. OK they may not have a big #1 wideout but they have enough pieces around Mcnabb to still be very sucessful. westbrooks still one of the best if not the best running back in the game. Mcnabbs healthy LJ healthy Avant looks ready to take that next step along with brown. Desean JAckson going to play a big role this season the all the oline is in tack no big injuries accept curtis who probably will back mid season the de line is hungry I see alot of pressure and sacks the linebackers are big young fast and talented. (how bout that joe mays baby trot)we have 3 pro bowl defensive backs how many teams can say that! B DAwk still here and hitting! and the special teams look stronger than Ive ever seen them! I see alot of touchdowns from this team this year as we march back to the top of this division and get back to being one of the NFL's elite teams.

Wow! Chad Johnson is changing his last name to ''ocho cinco''. I believe it. He's going to play this season, hurt no less, witch gives him more of a reason to maybe try and get traded. He doesn't want to play there. He apologized to the fans cuz he doesn't want to look like a bad guy. He showed up to camp so he didn't get fined 15,000$ a day. He said he's gunna still ''act'' like Chad Johnson, that means the Bengals either deal with it or trade him. Changing his name is just another attemp to upset the organization. He really wants to play for the Cowboys or the Eagles, that's easy to see. Two Super Bowl contenders. They should trade him. He's gunna stink with him or without him, cuz the Bangals stink all together.

Chris clemons is a beast i sen some of his games with the raiders last year and wen he gets in the game he gets the job done and makes some impact on the game....now what has mcdougal done against first teamers? hummmmm how bout nothin yea he's done good against 3rd and 2nd stringers but nothing dat great to still keep him over clemons or smith hee den had bout what 5yrs to prove himself and im still waiting for results from him which i havent seen to much of....

badger_24k - You need 3QBs in the NFL now adays. touchy-Feely might not be a good starter, but he's a really good 3rd. Why would you get rid of him. Wilson would never see the field in realtime games, and McDougle would get 5-8 snaps at best....

I can just hear the Giants fans saying now... "Boy, I hope the Eagles cut McDougle... We don't want to face him twice a year. He'll kill Eli." Sound stupid? So does worring about him 'standing over McNabb'. McDougle does well against backups. How come JJ didn't give him a shot with the 1s????

and for those who are afraid any DE the eagles cut will get picked up by the giants......I doubt that will be a factor in AR's decisions. Can't make decisions on players based on the fear of what other teams will do. He wasn't afraid to trade a # 1 pick to the cowboys so fear of a guy going to another team won't be a factor.

Clemons is 6'2 240 and thats perfect to be a situation DE. he is not going to need to play every down but when he is in there I expect great things.

One thing I am sure of.......most will be disappointed at who is kept and who gets cuts. This team has some players I like but the eagles won't be able to keep all of them. I do trust Andy Reid. He's rarely made a mistake in cutting one player over another. Some of those who get cut will get picked up immediately.

I don't understand some of you guys. I doubt we'll let Clemons go but if we do, he's not going to become the next Osi. He is a sit-ua-tion-al pass rusher, not an every down, 6-3 261lb b@st@rd. Anyway, I digress, I think at DE we keep 6 because we have different players with different talents that the Eagles can plug in. The question I feel is do you cut McDougle or Howard. I don't think we need Howard at DT in 5 packages and he has been a huge disappointment for us- 43 tackles and 6 sacks in 32 games. He's been healthy but hasn't performed. At least McDougle has an excuse, like being shot. But, Howard is the backup LS. That might hold some weight. On the other hand, McDougle has looked great. He looks fast and powerful and seems to being playing with a high motor. But, he's looked good against 3rd string Tackles. In the end, it might come down to salary. I'm not sure who's getting more this year but I bet it's Howard. Howard goes.

And 1 more thing just to throw it out there - if it comes down to keeping a player like mcdougle or kris wilson or some 1 who might even only play on special teams, i hope they do and cut aj feeley, i mean y keep him, he will hopefully never see the field and if he does then that means mcnabb and kolb are hurt and if that happens the eagles' season is screwed ne way, feeley is ok but if we need him to win us a super bowl were in trouble, so i hope he gets cut to make room 4 another player

Some of you people on here are plan stupid, no offense I love my eagles and all of our fans but come on, clemons is one of the fastest DE in the game and had 8 sacks with the Raiders last year, now putting him in the rotation with cole parker abirimri smith and hopefully mcdougle meaning they cut howard would be great. also we only need 4 corners and have demps as a swing 2nd saftey and 5th corner because jr reed is a bum and wow he makes big hits but since he lines up 50 yds from the line of scrimmage the WR has the ball and is already 30 yds downfield before reed gets to him and that just doesnt cut it. lastly do you really think the eagles are going to keep both of those 1st round picks next year, hell no we dont need ne more rookies to groom not to mention the huge money that you have to give high picks which the eagles wont do. I guarantee that they trade at least one of those to try and get WR roy williams or someone of his talent. Come on ppl seriously think a lil bit.

Yeah all these cuts were more or less expected. I'm stuck because I want 5 corners but I like JR and I think he's got something. I also want to give McDougle a shot because now that he's finally here and healthy he might turn it on again, but Clemons proved last year that he's capable. If/when one of them gets cut, I'm sure that guy will be picked up quickly.

You guys are NUTS. All of you "Clemons Haters" make NO sense. "Let's not cut McDougal, someone who hasn't really played against first teamers, and cut clemons." ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? You'd rather have NOT have McDougal making you pay for cutting him? If we cut Clemons i can GUARANTEE the Giants scoop him up. For all we know he's the next Osi and because he had that calf injury you call him a bust? Pay attention. McDougal hasn't proven anything to me yet. Clemons' what like 8 sacks last season proves to me he is way more valuable than a guy who hasn't played against starters in a game where coaches actually GAME PLAN.

All these are expected. I say get rid of as much of those weak linebackers as we can keep mays, jordan.....next year with one of those draft picks we should pick up a tackle and that MLB out of USC best linebacker i've seen since Julian Peterson in college... Release that bum Gasperson lets be real if he cant shine with this average receiving core then he is not ready plus next year we'll probably take a WR in the 5th 6th round anyways... Chris Clemons is the biggest bust in a while. It was a really dumb move if you really think about it we already had Victor from last year,We still had Howard, Parker was alright, trent was gold, Drafted bryan smith, still had mcDougle who was comin off injury i mean damn stop with the DLine already!Should have just paid Lito!!!Good Job BANNER! Still have not seen Booker do anything that spedaro claims he's gonna do. Kevin Kolb looks good the 2nd round pick doesnt hurt as much. Eagles line looks great this year Mcnabb could have a picnic back there. We need to just stop with the underdogs of our team and go with the best of the best because we will be playin other teams best of the best

Yeah good moves here. Moats wasnt going anywhere after being injured hes the Carl Pavano of the Eagles. I like Bryan Smith alot the kids got talent and heart we all saw that this preseason. Also I think the team needs to give Micheal Gasperson a chance.

what penalties would we have if we got rid of clemons and booker...i like mcdougle and i like hunt...booker and clemons havent showd us anything y keep them around...u think curtis will b able to come back good as new this season i dont think so shut him down it took lj along time to get right curtises strength is his speed and quickness without that hes nothing...we need some kind of big blocking back like davis unless they hve another option for goaline i dnt knw tough choices ahead...but the 8 that r gone really didnt have a chance with the talent on this team go eagles
