WR Curtis Out With Sports Hernia

By: JOE DOLAN

Wide receiver Kevin Curtis underwent surgery Thursday to repair a sports hernia. The procedure was performed by Dr. William Meyers at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia. Head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday that Curtis will "be out for a while," and offered no specific timetable on Curtis' recovery, other than that he expects Curtis to be back with the team during the regular season.

Curtis suffered the injury during last Friday's game against Carolina, and tried to play through it.

"We're trying to not wait and do that whole thing," Reid said. "We're trying to get on it. We've identified (the hernia) and it's the problem, and we're trying to get it taken care of."

Reggie Brown will miss his second consecutive preseason game with a hamstring strain. DeSean Jackson will start in Brown's spot Friday in New England, while Greg Lewis and Hank Baskett will rotate at Curtis' spot. Reid said the team currently had no interest in free agent wide receiver Joe Horn, and would not comment on trade possibilities.

The Eagles are no strangers to sports hernias, but there seems to be no trend for accurately diagnosing a recovery time for Curtis. Donovan McNabb missed the final seven games of the 2005 season after undergoing surgery for the injury. L.J. Smith was hampered with one in 2007. But, on the flip side, both Sheldon Brown and former running back Duce Staley played through the injury.

But Reid said each hernia is different, and must be treated as such.

"They're all different and we've found out over the years here that they all tear a little bit more than others and some are less than others. They've got to go in (for surgery),"" Reid said. ""You really go out and a player can function or can't function, and right now Kevin can't function. We know Kevin's a very tough guy, and he was trying but he was just not able to get open out there.""

On the considerably brighter side for the Eagles, Reid said guard Shawn Andrews will start on Friday.

Reid said Andrews has looked good in practice, but needs to get his chemistry down with his fellow linemen.

"You want continuity there, granted they've played together a long time," Reid said, "but they need to get in there and do it now, and that's what they are going to do."

Reid will also have a watchful eye on Tony Hunt, who will make his first start at fullback. But patience at the fullback competition is running a bit thin for Reid.

"If we like what we see then we'll give him a little bit more," he said. "If we don't, then we'll move on to something else."

let's see...Giants have Plax, Washington has S.Moss, Dallas has T.O. Eagles have R.Brown...no we should add another WR? WTF is management retarded? Then the talk about getting rid of McNabb? all he did was take us to 1 superbowl 3 NFC championships(with Thrash and stinkston and freddie I suck mitchell) Holy crap. Mcnabb is injured often because he's carrying the whole offense on his back! thank god for Bwest...

1st Of All...Our Wr Core Is Horrible despite the progress of "DJ" Now That Curtis is out for who knows how long.Andy Reid Is ALWAYS over looking the fact that a Big Time, Go To Receiver is Needed.Well now That Our #1 receiver from a year ago is gone Lets see how he Views It Now...Personally Im tired of Andy and the Eagles Front Office "Down Playing" The Wide receiver Position...If We Have The Money to go out and get one of the best Cornerbacks In The League when your already sitting on 2 good cornerbacks...They should have the same ambition to go out and seek a "Top Notch" Receiver when Your #1 Goes Down

Yo that dark_eagles comments from last nite are a joke Yes this eagles d-fense will be better and the special teams but you can say what you want I would bet the FARM that without a #1 receiver and we dont have 1 we wont make the playoffs unless the giants-skins and cowboys all drop out of the league because there F-O knows how to get the players they need to win REMEMBER we are from PHILLY we hate to pay for that guy that will push us over the top just like the phillies they will never go get a legit #1 starting pitcher (Hamels needs help)just like us and when the eagles did they pulled 1 out of the gutter in T-O (punk) and look where he took us so say what you want we are going to go maybe 8-8 if we get lucky sooo dark-eagle STF you obviously know nothing about football being a great fan does not win your team games so sit back and be pissed off all year when you watch these chumps drop pass after pass and McNabb get hit play after play they wont be able to get off the line and as soon as teams see desean jackson get a few balls he will get punched right in the mouth and get his wakeup call. so offer Arizona 1 of the #1 picks and 1 of the extra 3rd rounders we have and what ever else it takes since the eagles dont like 1st round picks and get Boldin or loooose "cherio"

This is a setback for the team. You look at the receiving corps of the Eagles and though its not a terrible group, they don't have a superstar receiver. They haven't had one, since Terrell Owens and that Superbowl run they had in 2004. Reggie Brown is probably their best receiver right now with Curtis out. Greg Lewis is average at best. The rookie looks ok, but he's still a rookie. I hope they make a move and try to get a solid receiver from somewhere.

I love this team, however, we need to be realistic here. Besides Westbrook who is a running back what major weapon does McNabb have. Look at all the great Quaterbacks with the exception of Marino.DonOvan had a top flight reciever for one year and he had the best year of his career, we heard these same old lines before T.O. and we are hearing them again. Is it a coincidence that we did not get to a SB untiL McNabb got his weapon. I know some of you will say well T.O. didn't play in the playoffs. Let's be realistic about that also. Without him we do not go 13-3, the caliber of the two teams we played were not that good, and we are not competitive in that SB without him. The best teams in the running this year all have No.1 wideouts. We have been going through this since McNabbs tenure here started. We have been to one SB since and it was that year we had a No.1. Speculate all you want about this receiving corps. I'd rather stick to the facts. History should teach us not to repeat it. We are repeating history. I hope that these receivers come through. History tells me they won't. Where are we weakest at? The players, coaches, FO, media personnel won't say it because they have to tow the party line, but it is obvious. The other teams will be taking advantage of this situation. What's going to be different about this year than last as far as catching the ball and YAC's The two receiver's we have now are not No.1's We need a receiver that can intimidate the secondary so that McNabbwon't get blitzed every down. Why do think teams blitz us so much. It's because they don't respect the recievers. Thewy play man and send everybody. Look at what happened in the Giants game last year. The offensive line was not all that bad they just had to deal with the blitzes all year long because the receivers could not get off the ball. WE NEED A NO.1 PERIOD

yo! i love the eagles and all but i don't think we are addressing the main issue. yeah we are making are team younger and trying to set up for a better future, but we should be looking at now. if we get a stand out reciever like Anquan Boldin we should win like 4 superbowls. we already have the D. Now we need to complete the O and let everything just fall into place.

i agree with darq on this. our front office has always gotten the job done without making the big splash. sure, boldin would have made an outstanding addition to this team, but the receiving core, and i stress this, WITH THE ADDITION OF A HEALTHY L.J., is still a force in our division. no pure number one, no pro bowlers, but nonetheless, as a group they are improved, lewis is catching the ball, brown is only improving with experience, and djack is gonna torch the second rate dbs assigned to him even in his first season...make no mistake, this division is ours.

The Eagles front office is one of the best in football. Sure we haven't drafted an all world wide out (I'm betting that DJack will be one special player), but look what we've done. Our Defense has been upgraded from last years (which was pretty damn good) and our offense with the addition of L. Booker and DJack will be alot quicker, not to mention that #5 is healthy and #36 is happy and everyone is ready to get underway so we can wipe out last year and show everyone that this team is still for real. So, I say this with all the ferver I can muster. Either get with us now, or shut the F#&@ up! GO BIRDS!!!!

Im thinking if the eagles would just have drafted Chad Jackson from the pats or Robert Meachem NO both who we could have gotten ..we wouldnt have to be worrying about this right now.. the problem is not the front office getting a "number 1 WR" but not drafting first, second round Talent at the wide out spot.. D jak is the first time in years.. Im not saying that chadjackson or robert meachem will be number ones but they both have a lottt of talent and upside which we could use instead of depending on the average group we have now without curtis.

well i think that the eagles front office is crazy because they really feel these guys can get it done wr has always been the eagles weakness. it seems like every time a player goes against them and ask for some play makers they try their hardest to prove them wrong by saying the guys e we have are good enough when the wr we have only look good when teams play zone they cant get off the line when teams play press so get a top wr and show your franchise qb that you are trying to get it done.

Most of you so called fans out there are seriously repeating each other. Instead of clamoring for near impossibilities like Boldin, you should be yelling at the front office to look at the few teams with extremely deep wide recieving cores and encourage them to trade for a young prospect with good measurables. For Example... the CHARGERS have 2 excellent(Jackson & Chambers), 2 good(Nanee & Davis) and 2 decent (Floyd & Osgood). FO get the ball now! Get one of these young prospects NOW! You can probably get Vincent Jackson for a 1st & 3rd. You can probably get Nanee for a 3rd or at worst a 2nd. Get it done!

com on we needed a #1 b 4 curtis even got hurt.no reggie or curtis ugh!i like Boldin but depending on r season and carolinas is he worth a high draft pick eventhough we have 2 ya never no.they might trade out of the 1st rd again anyway so mabe Boldin does make sense.if we cant stop the run none of this will matter.Injuries sux

yoterence 08/21/08 2:43 pm Here's some FACTS for ya: AR and Marty are stuck on the theory that they can run the same 'ole stuff and the players are so good that it'll work. WAKE UP!! We need new plays and new vision. If we have to put BWest and Booker as recievers and Avant as the HB, then we need to do it. Our offense is so predictable that other teams can watch film from last year and play well. Think back to 1980, we schemed and changed plays to get through the playoffs and then what did we do in the SB? Run-run-pass. We lost. This last SB, many thought if TO didn't play, we may have had a better chance to have won it due to the scheme used in the playoffs. Anyway, we need new plays, new schemes, and AR and MM need to pull their heads out and do it!! Case closed! I COULD NOT AGREE MORE! EVEN I KNOW THE PLAYS JUST BY THE FORMATION & I DON"T WATCH THE FILMS! GO BIRDS!

That's what I meant about keeping Lito ready though, if they throw him in as a receiver he'll get exhausted if he's also used on defense. And they've been throwing him in alot on defense, it's not as though he's just sitting around. Alot of corners have great hands, but it doesn't mean they like to play wideout.

I like the thought of Lito playing reciever, he has great hands. He could split time as CB and WR. At least explore the option and see how it works... what do we have to lose?

I feel with all the new talent, we need to explore some new things. Moving WR's, RB's, TE's around and mixing and matching. AR needs to adjust to each teams strengths and weaknesses and exploit them with no mercy. I don't think they always do that. Why not try Lito as a reciever occasionally. Klecko can pick up where he left off in Indy catching Red Zone passes (if he makes team). I hope this Booker-BWest thing is exploited, that'll cause match up problems for opposing defenses. I want to see an offense that is confident and aggresive, like the Defense!

The lose of Curtis calls for offensive adjustment in the wide receiver position Jackson needs to be moved to the slot, Avant and Baskett as out side receivers. That overpaid and overrated TE, L.J. Smith, better get involved in the offense and McNabb better get him the ball.

Yoterence I agree to disagree with You on the last comment. Our scheme has been proven time and time again since McNabb started at QB. The Eagles are as consistantly in the playoffs as any other great team. Little mistakes like overthrown passes, penalties, dropped passes, and dumb returns have been the plague. I believe Andy is doing everything he can to improve the team and the scheme. Just remember his head is probably alot more clear now than it was seasons before, without all the family issues going on.

If Lito wants to do that I don't see how it's a problem, but he's already a star CB, and it's good to keep him ready for rotations for Samuel and Brown, Nickel packages, and if needed an injury back up. Hopefuly not the latter.

how hard would it be to use Lito Sheppard as a Receiver...The bears did it with Hestor and is making progress. Lito has Sure hands and would only have to do a little homework to learn the routes. If he is as good against top receivers why couldn't he be a top receiver. I think that thinking outside the box a little could prove that the star was here all along

Tommy L mentioned this -- New assistant coach Mark Whipple will have to get out the power running playbook from his days with the Steelers. I think the Steelers had a pretty good running game under him. Food for thought....
