News, Notes And This And That About The Eagles

Everybody is sick of training camp. Trust me on that. Three weeks have come and gone, and while the work has been productive and the team optimism is high, it's time to go. Wednesday morning is to be greeted with whoops and hollers and the promise of more intensity ahead. Love ya, Lehigh Valley, but it's time to hit the road.

I've been right there every step of the way since the rookies and selected veterans reported on July 21 and between the many storms at Lehigh, the unusual water main break and the strangely cool weather, the roster has started to sort itself out. Here are some observations ...

  • Fullback remains an extremely fluid situation. Jed Collins is taking repetitions with the first-team offense, and has been since Sunday. Collins has come a long, long way since the Eagles signed him in the post-draft period in last April. Collins was, honestly, an afterthought from this perspective through the spring drills. He was sidelined for a time in the spring after undergoing an appendectomy, but Collins sure has bounced back. The Eagles hoped that Jason Davis would take advantage of the situation and seize the position, but clearly that has not happened.

The battle is far from over. The Eagles may be trying to shake things up and see how Davis reacts. I don't know. I do know that Collins, undrafted out of Washington State, is doing all the right things in his bid to make the team. While Davis remains No. 1 on the depth chart, Collins is pushing. Luke Lawton has not made his move yet, but there is time. The bottom line is that the Eagles need one of these players to get up and play well and clearly earn the job.

Hey, I know the fullback position plays only a small percentage of the time in the offense. But the position is important for pass protection, for leading the halfback into the hole and for being an option in the passing game. Davis scored a touchdown against Pittsburgh and seemed to do OK. Two days later, he was running with the second team. The game tape -- the eye in the sky, as they say -- clearly doesn't lie.

  • Of all the rookies, linebacker Joe Mays has made the biggest move up the depth chart. He is the second-team middle linebacker, coming off a good game against the Steelers. Mays is undersized, but he has been undersized his entire career, so that isn't really an issue. Mays and Pago Togafau are going to take it to the end of the preseason to determine who earns that roster spot. Mays is in the lead right now. He has the right mentality and the right approach to make it.
  • I need to see more from defensive end Chris Clemons. He shared a sack with Trevor Laws in Pittsburgh, but I would not be surprised to see the Eagles give Clemons more reps to give him the chance to show he can be an all-around end. Clemons is huge in the defensive line equation. He has to step up and play tough against the run and not simply settle in as a one-dimensional end.
  • Speaking of defensive end, don't discount Victor Abiamiri just yet. The Eagles will update his status in a couple of weeks, but the hope is that he comes back and helps this season. When? Don't know. Fingers are crossed. The Eagles are high on the kid.
  • I have to wonder if the fans/media members who are still wondering if the Eagles will go after a "No. 1" wide receiver before the season starts are watching this group of offensive skill players. The Eagles have a very good group. Do you all see that? They have versatility in the ranks and they have speed and a high skill set. I know the offense has to go out and prove it, but, boy, it's it's exciting to see every day in practice. Heck, did you see the offense when Donovan McNabb was on the field on Friday night? Judge by what you see, not by the vocal minority.
  • I've been watching a lot of the tight ends and both L.J. Smith and Brent Celek look great. Celek has really picked up his tempo the last week or so and he is ready to be a good option in the passing game and a good piece in the run game for his blocking. Smith looks terrific. He made a beautiful catch and run on the sidelines the other day that was super-encouraging.
  • I'm just guessing, but it says here that Shawn Andrews won't practice until the Eagles return to the NovaCare Complex. After two relatively light practices on Tuesday, the team has a mock game on Wednesday and then it's game time on Thursday night against Carolina.
  • I will be surprised if Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith plays on Thursday. He suffered a concussion in the preseason game last week and is not going to push things here.
  • Quintin Demps has taken some reps at cornerback with the hope of becoming a safety-cornerback whom the Eagles can use throughout the secondary. Demps is working on his back peddle and some of the technique things he needs at this level.
  • I've watched Asante Samuel the last two days and see a great, great player. He may only be 90-95 percent, but Samuel closes so well and has such great technique that you see immediately why the Eagles went out and got him in free agency.
  • Amazing to me that ESPN.com sends Matt Mosley to training camp to do a story on Donovan McNabb and the Terrell Owens angle emerges. Is this newsworthy? The guy hasn't been here since 2005. How about a story on how great McNabb looks, rather than the Owens angle and the "I-don't-know-how-long-I'll-be-an-Eagle" story that Mosley wrote. Give me something better than that, please.
  • Speaking of reporters, Yahoo.com's Jason Cole was here on Monday. Cole wrote a story back in the spring on DeSean Jackson and ripped Jackson. I wonder if Cole was in camp to do a story on how Jackson caught five passes in his preseason debut, or how Jackson makes big plays every day in training camp. Why do I think I'm dreaming? ...
  • A final word: You will see the fade pattern in the red zone this season. More than once. When, I don't know. Against whom, I would only be guessing. But the Eagles are throwing it in camp, and it is working. I love it.

Deion Sanders is a joke...anyone who does reality shows is a joke...unfortuneatly that includes Ozzie but man anyone who watched that show knows he nailed his performance a wacked-out rocker. I actually hate Deion more as an announcer than a player...not quite as bad as Collinsworth or Boomer 'Well when I played..' Esiason...but annoying.

Wow...according to Adam Schefter...PIT settles for Leftwich but actually wanted Culpepper. I'm not sure I see a huge difference between the two. Culpepper may be more athletic but he's less of a leader and more of a 'problem personality' (for instance...he actually thought he could talk to MIN as his own agent...weird guy..out-of-touch). Wonder how much he wanted as a just-in-case back-up?

deion sanders was interviewed by comcastsports the other day. he wont admit it but he wears his cowboy star on his sleve. he didnt give the eagles much of a chance this year. the reason were that the cowboys improved while the eagles didnt. hold on here! i can tell you what we have this year compared to what we didnt have last year. first and fore most we have a healthy mcnabb. anyone knows that a healthy #5 means at least a play-off berth. secondly, i can count on three viable offensive options this team didnt have last year. L.J., booker and the burner jackson. all you had to watch last friday was mcnabb spreading the ball around to six differant receivers. these three names are gonna play a major part along with our wideouts, buck and westbrook. third, max jean-gilles is an animal! andy will have to find a way to start him.i say, left guard and move herrimans to back up tackle. in my mind the eagles can produce a mismatch on just about every play. so there deion, i found 5 new additions to the eagles just on the offensive side of the ball! lets watch our defense thursday, i'm just as excited about them too.

There is more than 1 WR from FSU. Preston Parker is a good WR. Greg Carr is a Giant Freak WR.

Kenemeka... Yeah I know he played exactly two plays at DE for the whole game. The snaps at RDE occured early in 2nd quarter. I already posted a little about this below. I have watched this game 4 times. I recorded it to my dvr. I am assuming Reid has Howard penciled into 53 man roster.

When I went to the NFC championship game in St.Louis, back in 2002,that place was soo quiet in the 4th,almost like they knew McNabb was going to win the game. Then he throws a INT that wasn't his fault,Thrash quit on his route, that place erupted, and I thought,"Man,here comes the pounding"cuz I was up all game cheering. Then as I'm leaving,a crazy thing happens.Fan after fan starts coming up to me shaking my hand, saying"good Game,or"Man we were lucky"or"That was one of the greatest games ever".It was a shock to see.Aisle after Aisle I walked down while they stayed to celebrate,I'm getting congratulated on standing tall for my team. Then, when I get to the bottom,I look on the field and I see McNabb and Dawkins sitting on the bench, while everyone else is in the locker room.It almost looked like he was crying, but couldn't tell, cuz his helmet was still on.He stayed and watched nearly the whole thing, before going to the locker room.I knew right then, that he was going to be the greatest Eagle QB ever. Now we need to get him help, and go take the championship this season.

Acalvo... This #1 WR thing when are you going to learn. It is not going to happen, we have tried and no one was willing to deal. I mean we went after Moss, tryed to trade for Fitzgerald, tried trading for Roy Williams. You are beating a dead horse trying to win a race. The WR's we have are what we will be playing the season with. Also this is not a system were a big play reciever is vital. Hense the reason JB has tried to explain there is no such thing as a #1 WR in the WCO. Simply X,Y, and Z. We spread the ball around the recievers we have are fine. The problem last season for the last time was an injuried Offensive Line. Tra Thomas had problems with a disk in his back, Jon Runyan had a broken Tail bone, and Herremans had knee problems. Our star QB was injuried for most of the season, hell till week like 5-7 he couldn't plant and throw. When you throw the ball of your back foot your accuracy is way off and you hinder the recievers production. L.J. Smith was injuried which caused problems. Jason Avant played with a groin Injury for good duration of the season. This was a beat up offense. The problems have nothing to do with talent. Hell Curtis put up 77 Catches 1100 yards and 14 receptions of over 20 yards. The twenty receptions of over 20 yards is like 5th in the NFL by the way. Curtis, Brown, Avant, and Westbrook played lights out last year considering the problems around them. Curtis and Brown were one of five WR tandems to both have 60+ receptions. The problem last year was Health, Turnovers, ST, and Redzone Offense. All of these issues have been addressed.

rdbanky,I've seen our team have soo many heart breaking defeats, that when they went to the Super Bowl,I had a 2 week celebration, and had Cowboy,Colt,Patriot, and Redskin fans over at my house making fun of me the entire second half, and all I could do was smile.I was on top of the world that season, that's why this WR thing pisses me off soo much.I know what McNabb can do with a big WR.

rdbanky, isn't funny how the Giant fans came out of the woodworks, after the Super Bowl.I seem to remember their final season home game only selling out,due to Patriot fans showing up.That also happens when Philly comes to town. There were many games when it was 50/50 in that place, and when they were getting their @$$es handed to them,it would just be heckling Eagle fans, saying "Eli sucks,Eli sucks!"Or you'd hear the Eagle fan that wears the bird nose and hard hat caaing and screeching.

i can relate, acalvo. Even though the superbowl was more important, I thought that was a more crushing defeat. We dominated the whole game, only to have Trent Cole kick a dude in the head on the ground and give em 15 yards to hit a ridiculous game tieing fieldgoal. Then to lose in OT like that, was horrible. I mean, the SB was horrible to lose, but I half expected it, as much as I hate to say it. After we started making dumb mistakes and they were countering everything we had with the perfect play for it, I felt like we were going to lose that one. This game was in our grasp the whole time and we let it slip away. Plus there are tons of Giants fans at my college. The Pats fans are softspoken **** who didn't give a **** about their team when they were 3-13. Bandwagon jumpers, the whole lot of em.

Good point, colsohio, our D is usually pretty vulnerable to fade routes to large receivers. For some reason, our offense rarely runs those, though. Toss it up to Baskett! At least in the preseason....

calsohi, that was very funny, but true. How many times has Sheldon gotten burnt by Plexiglass?10 times?Remember a couple of seasons ago?The first Giant game, that we were killing them, then they came back in the 4th,Kearse got put out for the season, after having 3 sacks in the game, and it's sent to OT?Then we all out blitz in OT,Eli litterally turns his head completely around and throws the ball straight up in the air toward the end zone?Plexiglass kills Brown,IN PHILLY,then makes fun of the fans,as the celebrating starts?Talk about a sickening game.I left a restaurant with about 5 minutes left, and us up 2 TDS,just to hear on the radio what went down.God,it was awful.I nearly wrecked my car, bangin my fists and head on the dashboard.

I have an issue with Spuds praising the fade pattern as the answer to our ineffectiveness in the red zone in his "Final Word"...I am a little more skeptical...Of course the fade is working well in training camp...I don't remember the last time our defense could ever stop the fade pattern in the red zone! Anybody else out there disagree?

I also want to say that I love Lito, and personally feel that he's a better CB,WHEN HEALTHY,than Samuel. But,we can't have a T.O. situation either, and if he doesn't wanna be here, than let him be traded,or just bench him, like with T.O.I don't want him costing us games, because he wants to be jealous, and selfish. The team comes first.

Hey fyer,I was talking about our 2 first round picks for next season. We have one that we and every team gets every year, and we have one, after trading #19 to the Panthers this season. The way draft picks are numbered ,is based on your record. The worse a team is,the higher the pick, and vice-versa.So,let's say we trade Lito and our first round pick for a WR like, say,Chad Johnson.Let's then say that he helps us get to the Super Bowl. Now,win or lose,we're going to have either the #30 or #31 pick, due to being in the Super Bowl, but will have traded the pick to Cincy. Now,we still have the Carolina first round pick from giving our #19 up this season.Let's say thay implode on themselves, and go 4-12.Then, they'll be giving us a top ten pick, and maybe a top five pick, depending on other losing teams. In essence,we have what the Patriots had for this draft. They had 2 first rounders, and then lost one for cheating, but since they got one from the 49ers,it didn't matter.I say,why not take a chance and do that.Regardless of what happens,we still have our first round pick from the Panthers,so let's try to get value for him, before he starts doing a "Manny being Manny"thing, quitting on plays, and causing havoc in the locker room.Him signing Drew Rosenhaus has already caused team problems.

Bri... I agree that Patterson could be a run stuffing DT. You will not recieve an arguement from me about that. I think ultimately Patterson and Bunkley must have proved they were run stuffers for Reid to have cut Kimo Von Oelhoffen. I like the Mixture of DT's we have, run defense could be a concern but maybe only in 4th quarter. We will just have to wait and see.

Spud: You and I go a ways back, but stop with the "loud barking dog" routine with other writers. 5 and TO are always going to be discussed until they are out of the league... and that will be one of the topics when they retire (i.e. "remember back in 2005). Just try to be a reporter (err... PR man) and enjoy what hopefully will be a great season.

Adbrunsonsr... I agree with a lot of what you said about DT but not all. I definatly think Kimo could be called back if injury occurs. However, I do not agree that Reagor and Klecko are our 3rd and 4th DT's and Howard our 5th. I would say Laws and Reagor are our 3rd and 4th DT's and then f we keep 5 DT's then Klecko. I am not sold we are going to keep 5DT's anymore. I say Patterson, Bunkley, Laws, Reagor, and then Howard plays DE/DT.

Bri... I just finished watching the game for the 4th time. I can say without a doubt Howard did not play DT at all. He only played two snaps period on the DL. Around 12:48 in 2nd QTR as RDE and around 12:15 second QTR as RDE. That shows me that he is not in danger of being cut. What I believe is the Eagles wanted a good look at Mcdougle and Bryan Smith at DE. Reid also wanted to look at Laws and Klecko in the middle. So I say Mcdougle impressed and Smith has some work to do. I did catch one fault in Mcdougles game guys. Ok watch from the 8:00 minute mark down when Batch is out for the second time as Pitt QB. They target Mcdougle and run right at him. So what I say Mcdougle showed speed and impressed in the Pass rush, then Mcdougle covered screens pretty well, he needs to improve on his running game defense. I will say he did blow up a TE in 2nd half and stuff a run though.
