Lurie Addresses Team Philosophy On Contracts

Considering he's the man that fuels the fire, so to speak, it's no surprise that Jeffrey Lurie's annual "State of the Team Address" focused largely on contracts.

The Eagles' Chairman/CEO discussed the situations of running back Brian Westbrook and cornerback Lito Sheppard, and also addressed the team's policy with contract extensions for young players.

While not directly involved in contract negotiations or discussions with agents, Lurie does sign the paychecks and likes to keep abreast of the happenings.

"We're the distribution mechanism for these 53 players," Lurie said. "And you try to be fair and do contracts when they makes sense for the team, and you're trying to spread it out as best you can so you have the best possible roster. At the same time, you want to be fair to every single player."

Lurie described negotiating contracts and the salary cap as a "balancing act," on both the financial side and the personal side of business.

This relationship has been thrust to the forefront of training camp storylines, as star running back Brian Westbrook wants his current deal reworked. Westbrook, who led the NFL in yards from scrimmage in 2007, wants to be paid like a top running back.

As of now, negotiations with Westbrook's agent and Eagles president Joe Banner are ongoing.

"I don't really have any problem when a player outperforms his contract," Lurie said. "I think my philosophy, and I think it's the organization's philosophy, is to just try to always be fair. Adapt to where things are at."

As for Sheppard, Lurie wasn't as forthright. The Pro Bowl corner, too, wants a new deal in addition to a starting job.

But questions of Sheppard's health might have been one of the Eagles' deciding factors in signing Asante Samuel, the consensus top cornerback on the open market this past offseason.

"I'm very hopeful that Lito will have a terrific season," Lurie said, "and show us and the league that he's back to the old Lito – healthy and with a great playmaking ability."

Sheppard is one of many young players the Eagles extended long-term early in their careers. But, as recent occurrences have shown, a juicy extension doesn't always yield mutual satisfaction.

Lurie admitted the risk the Eagles take in signing their perceived young stars to long-term deals. He described that risk as two-fold: will the player outperform his contract, and, in turn, want a new one? Or will his value considerably dwindle throughout the course of the deal, while still collecting a hefty paycheck?

He compared the risk for his team to that of players entering unrestricted free agency. It is an educated-guessing game for all involved.

"We've always kind of led the league in signing players to contracts early on. It gives the players stability. It gives the team stability," Lurie said. "It's a collision sport. You don't know how long the careers are. You may not max out at the highest possible (salary) if you outperform your contract, but a lot of players underperform those contracts."

If you underperform, you don't just get a pay cut the next year. You get released, and you're out of a job. And you will most likely have to take a pay cut with your next employer because of your poor performance the previous year. This is pretty much exactly the way it is in other jobs.

I agree with agangofgreen. I don't dispute if a player like Westbrook plays the way he does he should be rewarded for it. Also, if a player under performs his contract then he should get a pay cut the next year. That is the way it is in other jobs that pay a lot less. I do have a lot of hope for this squad. If the injuries stay minimal they have a shot at the Superbowl. GO EAGLES!!!!

As the team owner I think Jeffery Lurie has brought this team from a marginal NFL team to one that is now considered first class. Although decision are made that may not be the most popular, they are and have been the best for the team. Jeffery's business sense has given Philadelphia hope! Keep up the good work and continue to work as a team for the Team. Go Birds!!

why is it you always here that a footbal player out proformed their contract was,nt BWEST brought in here to catch and run to the best of his that he can play are the highest level that he can play not nocking BWEST cause I love the guy, but when you sign a contract to play football and then you have a great year or even a few year what is that saying about the player( I was,nt playing at my bestthen but I,am now and I know thats what I was hired for but now I want more money) thats just like you or I doing a job but we did it really good and now we want a raise for doing the we were hired to do in the first place. Some of these Players get way to much money for what they do and we the fans have to pay in the long run one way or another the only difference between them and us is if we underproform we get fired and they find someone else to fill are position its in my opinion what is called greed simple greed cause the millions some of them make its outragous and it makes mer sick to see it. Like I have said before and I will say it again why dont they get paid different if they under proform if they dont play up to there contract theb lets see what they say///jmp Eagles Fans Go Birds

I liked this article. There is many factors that are not discussed in contracts and compensation beyond a players performance including whether or not they are on the field. Is a player "Branded" for one. Do their shirts sell and are they a known name. Devin Hester is an example. Now if you look at Ryan Grant's contract, it is less than 5 million guartanteed. Advantage Green Bay. Another thing a team does, including the Eagles, is a long term contract where money is payed after the player is off the field. Once released, this money does not count against the cap, and the player probably deserves the compensation because their years of service to the team. Their are many factors in a contracts. www.suitedpair.com

Sips... Mr. Lurie?.. haha, you mean Jeffie Boy! And the supreme effort??? Mmmm, a good effort? Yes... have they tried hard? ... sure we looked good for a while... the SUPREME effort... I dunno the supreme effort probably would have been stuffing T.O.'s mouth so full of money he couldn't talk and hoping that the Eagles could rebuild their defense to the level it was last year and this year with him still around... worked for the Cowboys, they haven't won a playoff game with TO, but he did catch an insane amount of TD passes last year... guess what we struggled with last year? Scoring touchdowns... the SUPREME effort?... eh, DEBATEABLE... and I am a true fan... how bout instead of letting our #1 star be disgruntled last year (which inevitabl leads us to this year), the Eagles made the SUPREME effort and shuffled some money around so they could give B-West a paycheck at least a couple times last year. (I do believe B-West received no pay for his amazing season last year.)

I agree mcnabb looks great, he seems relaxed and throwing the ball well i think he is going to havea great season i dont think he career with the eagles is over. I think westbrook deserves around 8 million a year but not 10 thats a little too much, i think he deservse a little more money now, and should just sign him an extension with a nice little bonus or something and keep him here for a while. As for lito in 2006 he had 6 INT's in 13 games, thats pretty damn good last year he only had 2 in 11 games, i like lito sheppard i think hes a good player but if he wants more money he needs to earn it.

and can i get some mcnabb love on the site, nobody talks about how mcnabb is jovial and looks like his old, happy go lucky, touchdown king, moving the pocket, takin the first down on his feet self? guess we'll just hafta wait till the season to have that.

yeah mox no doubt, lito's work ethic has dollar signs questioned, bwest dollar signs shining bright. everyone on the team could take a lesson from westbrook who has overcome all odds and worked to be the best in the league, among the best for those doubters... his drive is unmatched only by those of a former brian dawkins. still luv ya dawk, tremendous part of eagles history but u might be history urself, sorry, stay keepin the locker room up, u know what it is!

Mc"Nut" this is for you...When it comes to Phillie sports and who has made the effort to field the best possible team there is NO question Mr. Lurie has made every effort to get us the trophy. That is unlike other Phillie teams in this city over the last 25 years! The fact we haven't won the Super Bowl is attributed to many variables. Are we all frustrated it hasn't happened? OF COURSE but I really embrace he Eagles approach on "nearly" all of their decisions. This organization has been more professional than any team in this city, period. It is out of line for any fan to say they haven't made the supreme effort. I know it is a fan's right to share their opinion but some of our fans just speak out of their frustration and not from the perspective if they were in charge. It is easy to be a critic but there are so few objective true fans. It is time for you to run the team for a year and let's see what the results are. Oh never mind it would be a disaster!

OK, I know it’s from the radio, but I heard that the Eagles where willing to GIVE BWest 10M extra over the next three years. Now I’m no mathematician, but that would pay him about 8 million a year. Isn’t that top 5 money???? BWest want’s more, so do I, but I think the FO’s reluctance to give it to him is smart. I don’t think BWest is worth more than 8M a year. As for Lito, He’s another one that I don’t think has earned the money yet. He has been injured a ton, and where I love him when he’s health, he gives up points when he’s off.

mmoxley: I agree with u 100%. I think the Eagles do an AWESOME job with contracts whether they over or under perform. IMO.....Westbrook deserves to be paid at least for 2 more years. IMO.....Sheppard needs to play this year and keep quiet. Then he will get his 'Big Payday' (as long as he is heathly). I personally dont see him as an Eagle next year but all coaches watch the same film......Lito has talent, period! If anybody has any clue as to S. Andrews.....please fill me in. I think this is one of those things that Jeff was speaking about. Andrews is a young guy they gave a long term contract too. He has 'out-performed' it. The mystery is killing me!!!!!!!

Are you hinting that I’m an Eagles Employee??? LOL. I’d love to work for them, but I don’t. I think that they have always but the best product on the field that they could place out there; without giving away our future.

Moxley... I would say your love or hate of the front office hinges on two key issues: 1) Does your pay check read "Philadelphia Eagles" at the top of it? 2) Are you from the city of Philadelphia and have most of your teams managed to be just good enough to lose for the last 25 years? If you answer yes to #1, 85% chance you like the front office. If you answer yes to #2, 85% chance you don't like the front office.
