Booker Blog: The Perfect Situation

July 28, 2008 | Last Updated: 7/28/08 9:22 AM ET | Comments (18)

I am a lot more comfortable here in my second NFL camp in terms of the feeling of proving that you can play in the league. That's probably the biggest thing coming in as a rookie and you end up messing up because of it. The thing about it is once you get that out of the way; you really can focus on more important things.

Coming into this camp, I didn't feel like I had to prove my toughness, being a smaller back. I have to focus on the little things, just making sure I've got the offense down and reading defenses a lot better. I am a lot more comfortable and, to be honest, just as much credit has to go to my coaches and teammates. I mean, they have done an excellent job at making feel welcome and making me feel like I am already part of the team and we haven't even played a preseason game yet.

Eagles training camp is tougher than the one I had with the Dolphins. I mean that because we're here going full pads everyday and tackling to the ground. That's something that we rarely did in Miami and I think a lot of teams rarely do that around the league. I'm not saying that Miami's camp was easy because it definitely wasn't. My running back coach was Bobby Jackson at the time, so anybody who knows who that guy is knows it's going to be hard for anything to be easy. But the camp as a whole wasn't as physically demanding on your body. But I think there are positives and negatives to both, it's just a matter of how you look at it.

Coming into a preseason game, it's not really going to be an adjustment when you finally do get tackled. I mean I understand that people are going to hit me. The NFL is tough. It's hard enough trying to finish the regular season without having an injury. But again, you're just a little more poised coming into a preseason game; it's not as shocking. I think I'll be a little more prepared than I was last year.

I have been waiting to be used in an offense like this for half a decade. Now I'm in this situation, so I am fired up. I just have to stay away from Mike P (Patterson) and I'll be alright. I've been waiting to be used like this for a long time and I am more excited when I come to practice now, knowing that I'll be able to do all the things that I've been wanting to do. Everybody wants to be in an offense that's going to exploit their best attributes.

This is the perfect situation for me, so I just try to come out and make sure that when I am watching tape I am doing everything that I can do to make that happen.

To take the next step, I have to improve everything. And as I say that, I am not trying to be politically correct. That's how I look at my game. There is nothing that I can't do better. Obviously there are some things that I do better than others, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve just as much attention. Whatever I am doing I just try to go out there and work hard, and focus on the small things because in this league everybody is a professional and the small things are what win and lose football games.

Coming into camp, I wanted to limit my mental mistakes. Everybody in this league can play. They wouldn't be here if they couldn't. The difference, I think, between the NFL and college is just the mental aspect of the game. Being able to recognize defenses and coverages, which is new for me because this is the most I have ever been spread out wide. So now I have to focus on coverages a lot more too, but just limit the mental mistakes. Warrick Dunn told me while I was at Florida State to slow my mind down. He constantly told me that. Your body will move at the same speed but you have to slow the game down in your head and your play will be a lot more effective.

Reid made a spectacular move picking up LoBo. He was born for the offensive schemes you guys use. I have no doubt that Book will be the starter there and it's just a matter of time. I've been a fan since 2002 when he was the #1 HS recruit in the nation. Unfortunately for LoBo he went to FSU during a bad time when the offensive coaching staff was horrendous. Same with his time in Miami. I'm a fan of both the Noles and the Phins and never have the offensive staffs been as bad as the time when LoBo was there. However, you would never know it from meeting him or listening to him speak. He could win an oscar with as well as he consistently covered his frustrations. This is one classy cat! With some success on the field the Philly fans will come to LOVE LoBo and he will unquestionably make the city proud off the field. I can't say enough how strong and true this guys character is. Check out the Emerald Bowl 2006 when FSU played UCLA. The same UCLA defense that put a beat down on USC the game before when a win would have put USC in the BCS championship. It was Jeff Bowdens last game calling the shots and FINALLY they used LoBo like he should have all along.....like Philly uses Westbrook. Booker shredded the UCLA def for 91 rushing and 117 receiving out of the back field for 2 touchdowns. Book was the MAN that game and took home all the honors. BTW, he hardly ever fumbles! LoBo always says all the time things happen for a reason. Well, those reasons ended up getting him to the best team in the NFL his talents. The Eagles got him for a bargain this time around. Keep an eye on him now because Booker will be the MAN in Philly and you're damn lucky to have him. It's much harder to hate the Eagles now. Stay healthy Book and do your thing the Seminole Nation is rooting for you!

Just play and have fun. As much as I want to see a trophy I would rather see an Eagles team that is competitive and having fun. Stay healthy and good luck.

Well Lorenzo, after the nice TD run you pulled in Training Camp on Monday, I can't wait to see what you'll be able to do for the team once the preseason starts. The entire running game, offense, and defense looks incredible and I can't wait for the regular season. Booker, Buckhalter, and Brian. Maybe the new nickname the Eagles are lookin' for these guys should be the 3 B's of the Eagles.....yeah I agree...horrible. They need some sorta nickname though lol.

Hey Book, It is wonderful to have your here. You are a very talented, and from what I see so far -- likeable young man. I believe you will be an added addition to an offense that is on the rise. Since I am a true Philly fan, if you happen to develop the fumbles, the T.O. attitude, or the "for who -- for what" perspective, then please be aware that I will be leading the "Booker sucks!!!" chants. Once again, welcome to the city of Brotherly Love. (Sorry 4 errors in prior submit)

I like the enthusiasm you bring to camp. Hope it translates on the field in the regualr season. Mentioned in an earlier reply...the fans can get pretty vocal upon disappointment and poor playing during a game, Taht's Philly for ya. It's a love / hate roller coaster! but we always end with the brotherly love if you're consistant with great plays. Looking forward to a good season with you in the lineup!

Hey 25...Not sure how the MIA fans treated you but the fans here can be tough. You sound like you've already got the right attitude coming into camp. People already want you to be the second coming of B-West, remember that. These same people will jump all over you the first time you fumble. Most Eagle fans actually just want to see you come to play each week, the vocal minority, however; can really try to tear you apart for every mistake. I have high hopes for YOUR Eagles this year. Good Luck. Nice Blog.

hey I love this guy. i really feel like he gets it. Remember the good old days when west and buck and duce were considered a three headed monster? Well, (West is so great it will be hard to have an equal three headed monster) I think buck and now booker can contribute with west to a great running game and passing game out of the back field. Booker can do everything west can do (Not at the same level) but he can catch and run and we all know when buck is healthy he can do the same. I'm very excited about this backfield and the possibility of a very good, not great, but very good offense.
