Reid: Samuel To Have MRI; Andrews Update

July 26, 2008 | Last Updated: 7/26/08 8:46 PM ET | Comments (32)
By: JOE DOLAN

By the end of the Eagles' first full-contact practice of the season Saturday, two Pro Bowl players were conspicuously missing from the sidelines.

One? Unexcused, but expected. The other? Unceremoniously limped off during workouts.

Guard Shawn Andrews still has not reported to camp, citing "personal issues," while cornerback Asante Samuel, the team's prized offseason acquisition, pulled up lame with a strained right hamstring.

"He felt better once he got inside. He'll probably have an MRI [Sunday]," head coach Andy Reid said after Saturday's afternoon practice. "It was more positive after her left."

Reid didn't seem overly concerned with either situation.

"I'm going to coach the guys that are here. That's what I'm going to do," Reid said. "And then when I have something to share with you guys about Shawn, I will. But I don't have anything for you right now."

Initially, Samuel's grasping of his hamstring and subsequent limping may have raised alarms of a reoccurring problem, but the injury is not to the same hamstring that kept him grounded during June's Organized Team Activities (OTAs).

Samuel pulled up during a seven-on-seven drill, and limped to trainer Rick Burkholder. Burkholder helped Samuel stretch out the hamstring in his tent, then they returned to the locker room.

As for Andrews, "stalemate" might not be the best term to describe his situation. It's still not evident exactly what the issue is, only that his agent Rick Moran said it wasn't contractual. He has been placed on the team's reserve/did not report list so they could sign another player, who turned out to be guard Cameron Stephenson.

"It's a personal situation, and we'll respect that," team president Joe Banner told reporters Saturday. "I just want to respect his privacy."

As a whole, however, Reid remained optimistic. He said that Andrews' absence is allowing Max Jean-Gilles to get some much-needed reps with the first-team offense, and that players took the first hitting practice seriously.

"It looked like they were excited and ready to go. I liked the tempo.  And was everything right? No, not everything was right," Reid said. "But the assignments were right. It's just the techniques. We need to knock some of the rust off."

Both Reid and Banner also addressed cornerback Lito Sheppard's situation. Sheppard arrived at camp on time, but made it clear that he wasn't exactly thrilled with his contract and the possibility that he might not start.

"I would hope he would want to start. Lito's a very competitive guy, and a very talented guy," Reid said. "So I would be very disappointed if he didn't want to be the guy."

Banner said that he believed both Sheppard and running back Brian Westbrook would be treated fairly, and that reporting on time couldn't hurt their chances of getting what they wanted.

He called the negotiating process "psychological," and the front office's mindset is eased because both players reported on time.

"Your goal is to have everybody on the team feel good about everything," Banner said. "The reality is that there's 80 players in camp, and 53 guys making the final roster. There's always going to be some situations. What varies is how people react to them."

NOTES...

Left tackle Tra Thomas and fullback Luke Lawton left practice early with cramps. Reid said they should be fine.

acalvo, i called you a dallas fan because thats the worst insult i can think of for someone i have no clue who he is, but he obviously has no clue about football... a dallas cowboys fan. what exactly is a west coast receiver? short or tall, thick or thin, fast or slow, quick or lumbering? I don't recall in 30+ years of watching or playing football ever seeing a west coast receiver. but based on you insight, i too believe we need to change our offense. we have east coast tight ends, so we need to run the east coast offense. we should have kept trotter too, and run the vaunted stationary defense. you could be the head coach, but we'll need to change the logo to a star.

So the next logical question is what to do about Andrews. If he wont come to work, then what is his value? What can we get for him? What do we lose and what kind of shape does the O-line take with Herremans fighting for his job on the left, and Max-Jean taking Andrews place? Does Andrews show? Are we all overthinking this? (Prob. but thats what we do)

Hey Kzacher, while you're a rookie to this message board thing,I'll let you in on a little secret.Reading is fundamenatal, and completely necessary to understand what someone is typing. My post daid nothing about the G$##!@N Cowboys, and as a matter of fact,if you read my other hundreds of statements on this site, you'd know that I'm a true Eagle fan,and make fun of OhNo and the Cowboys all the time.DeSean Jackson is our #! reciever,if you would have listened to Reid and his press conferences during and after the draft. He's backed of those statements lately, which make me wonder trully how good Jackson is in a West Coast offense,I've seen him play up close, and he is small, but extremely gifted and amazingly fast. He's already getting both feet down in training camp the first week. There are rookies that take a year or longer to get that figured out from the college,"one foot in" rule.Kevin Curtis absolutely does SUCK,in the #1 WR position. He was the #3 in St.Louis, and is a #3 here.Andy Reid has to STOP treating him like he's a #1.What,is it because we don't have a #1,and Curtis is just filler for the spot?Kzacher, you're damn right I wanted to keep Trotter last season, and I didn't want Spikes from the day we signed him. There's a reason why the lowly Bills didn't want him, just like there was a reason the lowly Rams didn't want Curtis. As for paying Lito and Westbrook,if I was the GM,I'd pay them both, but it is very irritating seeing Westbrook whine about more money, when Lito didn't complain about losing his deserved CB spot to a player that's already been hurt twice and training camp hasn't been going for more than a week.Lito came to camp,as well as got Drew Rosenhaus, who gets $#!+ done.As for Westbrook being the best runnin back in the NFL,are you a 10 year old,Kzacher? The best RB this decade has been one man and one man alone,LaDanian Tomlinson.Westbrook is good,Marshall Faulk good, but he's no L.T.,I assure you.As for telling me to stay off these boards, you've been here for what 20 minutes,I've been here for years, and have people like JB99 to vouch for me.I BLEED GREEN,but I also know football, and the things that have happened to this organization, like McNabb having only one great reciever in the time he's been here,or Reid not being suspended last season to deal with his family issues,or letting Trotter,Vincent,Taylor,Cunningham,White,K.Jackson,Garner,Lewis,Ritchie,Harris,Garcia(who made the pro bowl last season),and many more go to other teams,or just plain go,while adding crap players like Curtis,Pinkston,Thrash,Mitchell(Even though I'll always be greatful for 4th and 23),Mahe,Feeley(not drafting him but bringing him back from Miami),Boiman,Klecko,Spikes,Howard, andon and on,have set this team back year after year.If you can't see it,than you've been blinded by the same propaganda that Spadaro and others post to this site day after day, foolin idiot fans into believing everything's fine.

Size could be an issue but can't we crossbreed one of these corners into a slash safety position . Lets set up a few more special dime packages that incorporate a heavy blitz with tight and speed oriented pass coverage . The rotation is nice too but if you have the talent consistantly keep it on the field.

Thats why there are 3 top flight cornerbacks in camp. They will keep and use all 3 to complement a defensive advantage. Injuries are gonna happen and you can't have a strong defense with just 2 pro bowlers. I commend the management for bringing in Samuel to work with Brown and Sheppard.

hey acalvo, may i remind you of who got us anywhere near getting into the plyoffs last year. Brian Westbrook! It's not like Lito's inury free anyway is it. Everyone has an injury at some point in there career. If they dont then they're one of the lucky ones. Run back to Cowgirls dope.

acalvo01 - quit talking out your bung hole, and go cheer for the cowpokes... they need all the "intelligent" fans they can get. DJ named our #1, Curtis sucks, keep Trotter & TKO, pay Lito but not Westbrook? You are a Dallas fan! DJ is not the #1, Curtis put up great #s in his first year in a WCO, with a lame QB and no TE. Is Trotter still playing? Anyone picked up TKO yet?... not yet. Why? Because he is so good? Don't pay the best RB in the league, but pay Lito who misses 25% of his games? you have shown your true colors, and the're blue and silver, so take your lameass to your real team's site and stay off our boards.

hehehehe...naysayers out already..on injuries...normal for early on..Samuels is not used to AR's "run and gun" camp...someone said pay Lito, not BW..are ya nuts...pay a guy who has spent a third of his career watching on the sidelines..or pay a guy who. not a good thing, I admit, is 65% of our offense and missed, like, 6 games in all his career..my pocket money goes to BW first..if Lito can prove he is durable enough to stay on the field..yea..give him a doller or two more..on Andrews...every training camp it's the dame thing .."the kid" needs to grow up and bone up to his responsibility to his team mates and the team,,,Like AR said..no legitimate excuse..

They got another full month to recover. As long as both are 100% to go healthy then it doesn't matter. If Samuel isn't available for the first few games, big deal. We know Sheppard and Brown and Dawkins can cover the pass games of everyone we play this year. Especially now that they're healthy

Let's hope Samuel just has a minor cramp/pull of the hamstring...and lets all give Andrews the benefit of the doubt until we know all the details. Both are going to be All-Pro Eagles this season...keep it positive, Philly.

The only cocearns I've had the past couple of years as an old quarterback analyzing the scheme is that with exception of the schemes for Westbrook , the passing game is blah and predictable. Granted most star wide recievers don't need to be because of strength speed and after catch escapability merely overwhelms the coverage. Without the overwhelming "star wide recievers " on this team I would expect our normally great coaching staff to be more creatve down and in mid field. My big concearn with our Wr's is that perhaps they just don't have the ability to cut read and react to coverage as the coaches would like. Brown is young and shows the occasional glimpses of the cutting ability , but with Curtis , Lewis and until recently Pinkston they consistantly seem to run plain straight and easy to read routes ( I wonder if this is out of just plain ability)Desean Jackson from what I've seen on tape appears to be of the same lineage straight away and only shifty after the catch. I believe the key to this wide reciever corps without a "star " upgrade has got to be Hank Baskett . Watching him I see the ability to adapt a route to find the soft spots . If he and mcNabb can can work together on option routes and stay in tune with each other we can have a superbowl quality offense . Booker shows the same presence out of the backfield as well ,but it's going to be interesting to see how we use him. So as you watch the preseason Don't stress Curtis and Brown so much... it's Basket that is going to make the biggest difference this year for good or bad.

Players get older and demand more money, it happens all the time. The front office pisses me off every year, Bobby Taylor, T Vincent, Duce Staley, Trott, Kearse and Tko. Yet every year it turns out that they were right. Dont be surprised when B-Dawk gets pushed out the door. All of those players (minus Kearse) went on to do zippy. Let the front office do what they do! As far as the WR's go, ride it out and see what we look like in pads and after guys start taking some hits. We all know the F.O. made attempts to go after Fitzgerald and Moss, but it didnt work. We have solid talent at WR to help ease the load from Westy. Dont get your panties in a wad before the season starts.

We have decent backups ..perhaps not pro bowlers at guard ... but if Shawn is not comfortable with this team and playing this season perhaps our extra draft pick next year and Andrews would be decent trade bait to get a Chad Johnson from cinci ( to calm all of these wide reciever worries)... Perhaps playing with his big brother in Cinci would serve all parties perfectly.

Hey,I've been telling you guys since the season ended that we're in trouble, unless we change our offense. We don't have a West Coast Calibre Reciever, ala Jerry Rice,Terrell Owens,Rod Smith, and others. What's really sad is that DeSean Jackson, who I love, but is a rookie, was named the #1 WR as soon as he was drafted. What does that tell you about Brown,Baskett, and Kevin"Would Reid please trade him to the Patriots"Curtis.Jackson will make a HUGE difference, but can't do it all (Where have I heard that statement before....Oh yeah,we say it about McNabb every #$$%^in'year).Am I wrong to ask Andy Reid to bring Jerry Rice into the coaching staff,or even as a coaching player.I bet he's still better than who we got now, except for Jackson.I'm on board, but crap like this, already puts holes in the boat.STOP THE BLEEDING BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS.Oh,and Westbrook, quit your damn whining. If anyone deserves a new deal,it's Lito, not a running back that has the fans holding their breath on every play, week after week, waiting for a twisted ankle,a sore knee,a pulled Hamstring, and then misses games like last year against the first Giants game, that we needed to win. That win gets us in the playoffs last year,at 9-7,above the Redskins.I love this team, but every year I keep feeling like we're missing one piece, like Trotter getting dumped last season.People talk about him being so old,yet he was our defense's leader.Where's TKO,and Kearse now? It's funny Spadaro, how I haven't heard one word about Spikes leaving, when you $#!+ on Trotter last year claiming that Spikes was a perfect replacement.Where's you TKO press conference now!!!Leaders don't just GET replaced. You either upgrade the position,or you get offense like we had last year where we hoped a #3 WR for the Rams,THE RAMS,was our #1,and you force-feed it on the fans.Well,I for one am not eating anymore West Coast $#!+ anymore, until I see first hand,in the first pre-season game, how DeSean handles the load, and what a load it is,a load of crap.Go Eagles! 24-24 the past three years with no Super Bowl wins is an outstanding record!GET MCNABB SOME HELP OR TRADE HIM.HE DESERVES BETTER FROM THE TEAM AND THE FANS.Oh,and stop blaming the defense for our anemic offense.Go ask the average fan who our Wide Recievers are,and I'll bet you still get some Terrell Owens answers. What a shame....

I'm not worried. We Still have Greg Lewis! YA ! He'll be there to run a decoy route while we wonder why Mc Nabb is not throwing the ball. Enough of my Greg Lewis bashing. He would not be on any other NFL roster. Enough this time. Lito is still the starter. Thta's good. Maybe he is motivate now. Injuries do happen in football, especially the speed guys and hamstrings. Remember Donte Stallworth? Oh yes, another NFL quality receiver that put up some goodnumbers that didn't fit in to the Eagles system . I'm not worried, we have Greg Lewis inked until 2011 maybe longer. YA BABY! Did yo uknow there is a movie about the Eeagles lackluster commitment to Wide Receiver. It takes place in the 1970's but I still refuse to watch it. www.2008conservative.com

I hear ya Jsteck...this isn't worth freaking over...just a reminder that it's GOING to happen...question is who and when and how bad...When was the last year anyone can remember not losing a starter before the season? I can only remember back about 6 or 7 years...but if it doesn't happen this year..it'll be the first in a really long time. Injuries in football are the norm, that's the game, heck, it's one of the reasons we love it..haha, but losing a starter before the start, always sucks...and always happens for us...I'm in no way saying this hamstring is the one we'll be talking about just before week 1...it's just the reminder.
