Jackson: Hamstring Is 100 Percent

In his first season in the NFL, DeSean Jackson really didn't want to make the wrong first impression.

That's why signing his rookie contract before training camp - a four-year deal he agreed to on Sunday - was so important to him. He's ready to get onto the field and become the playmaker the Eagles drafted him to be.

"It's huge for me," Jackson said. "The last thing I wanted to do was to leave the impression that I wanted to hold out and not get into camp. ... I'm here, and I'm glad I'm here, and I'm ready to just get to football and make everything happen."

The contract isn't the only good news for Jackson. A hamstring injury that sidelined him during the OTAs is 100 percent healed, he said.

Jackson figures to contribute immediately on special teams, a position at which the Eagles desperately needed a playmaker after an abysmal season in 2007. He also should see time as a slot receiver.

In the midst of all the excitement, he found it funny that the day after signing the big pro contract he'd waited his entire life for, he was back moving into a tiny dorm room.

"It's back to step one," Jackson said. "It's back to football."

Celek Reports Early After Being Limited By Injury

Brent Celek was part of the selected veterans group that arrived to Lehigh early.  The sophomore tight end did not participate in any of the OTA's or minicamps because of surgery required to fix his shoulder.

"This is good for me to get the rust off and start playing football again," said Celek who claimed that he's 100 percent recovered.

The fifth-round pick caught 16 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown in his rookie season. He is now healthy and prepared for the physical challenge that training camp presents.

Training Camp Couldn't Come Soon Enough For Moats

Ryan Moats might be more excited than any other player to get back on the field.

The 5-8, 210-pound running back missed all of the 2007 season after he broke his ankle in a preseason game against the Ravens. He admits that it was hard for him to have to sit on the sideline and watch his team play without having the ability to contribute.

"I've been working really hard," Moats said. "I said the first day when I broke my ankle, on that field in Baltimore, let's start working right now. Let's not waste any time."

Moats, now in his fourth season, is fighting for a spot on the roster once again and he has no problem with it.

"Competition has been a big part of my life for a long time, from the bottom all the way up to the top and I don't mind it," he said. "That's why it's called football.  It's not a big deal to me and I'm looking forward to this camp."

DE Smith Tips The Scales At 245, Where He Needs To Be

Getting in shape for the season isn't defensive end Bryan Smith's biggest goal for training camp. He's way past that.

It's why the third-round pick from McNeese State hopes that Lehigh University's rolling hills won't be used for conditioning, something he's been doing ever since the June OTAs ended.

"Man, I hope I don't have to run up them," he joked.

Sitting on a bench outside of his dormitory, Smith said he's hasn't been looking too far forward. He's spent the past month working out to prepare for camp, and he's bulked up to 245 pounds. It's almost exactly where coaches want him so he's in the best place to compete for a spot as a speed-rush defensive end. However, he will undergo an MRI on his hamstring and is sidelined for the time being.

"They haven't really told me my role. It's pretty much just go out there and show them what I can do. It's training camp," Smith said. "They'll see where they can put me."

Demps Not Fazed By The Heat

Quintin Demps has heard the stories - training camp is long. It's rough. And by God, is it hot.

But the rookie still pulled into Lehigh University on Monday wearing jeans. He wasn't sweating. The sunny, warm but relatively breezy day in Bethlehem doesn't faze him - a UTEP alum - in the least.

"It feels way better than Texas," he said. "You don't think so? The Texas heat is killing right now."

Demps enters his first training camp as one of the more interesting stories on the squad. The Eagles were happy to use a fourth-round pick on a player who can be used in so many different ways.

Demps figures to get reps at safety, cornerback, kick returner and punt returner, adding depth to the secondary and hopefully a much-needed playmaker on special teams.

Still, the jack-of-all-trades won't let on to what he feels his best spot would be.

"I'll have to get back to you on that one," he said. "It's the same thing. You move backwards."

Gibson: Just Like Home

Mike Gibson says Bethlehem, Pa. reminds him of home, well at least the scenery.

"It reminds of home in Napa, California" Gibson said. "We have a lot of mountains and valleys and trees and stuff. It's beautiful up here. It's a great atmosphere so that will be nice."

Gibson's second home, battling in the trenches on the football field, is what he is most worried about.

"We have a great offensive line and what I've got to do is just worry about myself," said Gibson. "I'm sure that's everyone else's goal too because if you do that then you'll be competing for a job. My job is to compete and we have a great offensive line, so it's going to be tough."

The veterans that Gibson has so much respect for have given him some good advice for his approach to training camp.

"Work hard, try your best that's all they told me," he said. "Jon (Runyan) has told me quite a bit about what to expect and I think I am ready."

Mays Is Ready To Put The Pads On

Joe Mays has definitely brought the most luxuries from home out of the rookies. He also has brought his powerful tackles and hard hits, so you know he is looking forward to putting on the pads.

"I'm very excited," Mays said. "I get a chance to show why they drafted me. My physical play, my toughness and how I play football is why they got me here.  I just want to show it."

The camp will be brutal, as Mays was informed from those who have been through it all before, and still he is looking forward to it.

The fact that Mays will be trapped in a dorm for three weeks makes him feel like a freshmen in college again, but with a new set of concerns.

His biggest fear now is not making the team.

"But I know if I come out and handle my business I will make the team, so I'm going to leave that far in the back of my mind for right now," said Mays.

A Mattress Not Fit For A King

King Dunlap has been working out, running and fine tuning the areas of his game that offensive line coach Juan Castillo wanted him to improve. He has been in contact with Castillo since the Organized Team Activities in June, but he admits he is still a little nervous.

"I don't see anything wrong with being nervous," Dunlap said. "Being too nervous could be your biggest problem but I have a little bit of nerves running through me right now."

Beyond the football field, Dunlap and his 6-8 frame are sure to encounter some difficult nights in the dorms of Lehigh University.
"(The beds) are comfortable enough," Dunlap said. "It's barely long enough but you just have to make do with what you got. It's not as big as my bed at home but it will do for right now."

The Eagles' seventh-round draft choice may not know what to expect, but he will find out soon enough. All he can do is bring a good attitude and maybe next time a bigger mattress.

Former Rookie Free Agents Inspire McBride

Among the early arrivals was perhaps the rookie free agent most under the spotlight, former Delaware State wide receiver Shaheer McBride.

And it's precisely those reasons why McBride's drawn the watchful interest of fans - he's a local guy (from Chester) and his position happens to be among the Eagles' most scrutinized.

Not only that, but 2007's opening day roster featured two former undrafted rookie free agents at the wide receiver position, Greg Lewis and Hank Baskett.

Still, McBride plans to make his own luck. He hasn't yet spoken to Lewis and Baskett about what specifically to expect. Now, he's going to take the time before the bulk of the veterans come in to make his impact.

"I think it's a great opportunity for us to get extra reps and learn the offense," McBride said. "It's a pretty good accomplishment (to be here). But it just shows how far I have to go now."

Studebaker: The Bare Necessities

As he stepped out of a team shuttle at about 12:30 PM, Andy Studebaker looked around tentatively, and finally cracked a smile.  He had heard about training camp from his veteran teammates - about the heat, about the sweat, about the work. Now, he knew it was time to find out about it for himself.

Carrying just a suitcase and a backpack with the bare essentials for survival, he said he was looking forward to getting on the field.

"I left my hyperbaric chamber and my plasma (TV)," Studebaker joked. "(I brought) just what you see, some clothes and my playbook. I'm ready to go."  Studebaker figures to be competing for one of the final outside linebacker spots on the 53-man roster. The rookie sixth-round pick played defensive end at Wheaton College.

Hey Chosen One--I hope you're right. Maybe that is why Eagles brass aren't too concerned about what you and me and every other Eagles fan is concerned about--our stud WR. Maybe they see this guy on tape and see the potential. You got me thinking...

Great points, Nuudlz. I have to agree with your side of the argument here. Avant has not once impressed me as a pro. His career in college was promising, but I havent seen how he fits into our offense thus far. Hei... The eagles drafted Avant in the 2nd or 3rd round. They had to give him his chances to justify that pick. If he doesn't show that he's worth it this time around then they won't give him that chance again. I would love to see their faith in him pay off this year, but I am expecting more than not that he does not live up to their expectations and he gets cut. Like I said before I would much rather have Baskett and McBride/Jones as my 4th and fifth than Glew and Avant. Only because I know what I'm getting with Avant and Glew, while Baskett has shown he has upside and the other two have yet to dissappoint.

famroc: Avant wasnt injured during training camp, when he "beat out" Baskett. He was also a draft pick, so the FO had incentive to back him up. And his top competition was Will James. This year is the big test, for both of them. Past production still favors Baskett. Position may favor Avant.

Hey I like them both - Avant and Baskett. I think we are guessing and we won't know until after a couple of preseason games. They are two completely different types of players, but I think Avant will be much more productive in the passing game. Avant played with a hernia all year and still beat out Baskett. It's important not to fall in love with the hype and go with the play on the field. They both produced but in different ways last year. But this is a new year. It will be really tough for more than 5 receivers to make this team.

Let me stress again . . . Brown and Baskett = immediate impact. Avant? Not yet. Lets see him stay healthy. Or produce big plays while injured.

helium: you have a very selective memory, friend. You ignore the injury that kept Avant out of training camp in his rookie year. Add that to his hernia last year. Add up how long he has been in the league. Back to back seasons where he couldnt perform due to injury. Bad trend. You also ignore Reggie Brown's career prior to last year. 06, he was our team's best reciever, led our team in deep catches. Last year, he and Lewis were the only deep endzone targets we had. Westy and Curtis took a couple to the house, but werent open in the endzone. Reggie was. So, if not 40 or 30 yards, same difference. You ignore the traits of a quality corner. A quality corner has big play impact. Hanzon does not catch pics or deliver big hits. He stays with his guy in the short game but he has been burned and he doesnt scare recievers. Compare that to Baskett's rookie camp. He beat out Hanson, and Rod Hood, and Sheldon on his way up the ladder. He also produced 2 catches of +40 yrds, a pair of touchdowns, and a 4th and 10 catch in the playoffs (called off for no fault of his own). When used in the offense, he produces big plays. Avant doesnt. Avant got a free ride last season, even though his only production was in training camp, opposite James and Hanson, who do not play at the level of Hood and Brown. Even coming out of college . . . Avant ran a 4.6. Does that mean Avant isnt a good reciever? Does that mean he isnt better than Baskett? No. But it does mean he will have to compete at a higher level than he has in the past. It also means that if he produces, it will not be due to his speed. Plenty of recievers do well without speed, so like I said, I dont count him out. But I have seen more from the rest of our recieving corps than I have from Avant (Jackson and Mcbride excluded).

Nuuudlz... Also why would you pick 40+ yard receptions. That doesnt occur often. Honestly sought out that stat, fully healthy Brown who was also starting caught only 2 passes of only 40+ yards. Last season Baskett didn't catch any passes of 40+ yards in fact only 1 pass of 20+ yards. Avant also didn't catch a pass of 40+ yards but did manage to catch 2 passes of 20+ yards. My view honestly SR. is that Avant beat Baskett out with an injury as the #3 guy, so he should only approve being able to plant and run with out pain.

urbnasty... I don't agree with you. If you want to look at it like that the list expands a lot. How about our run stuffers Bunkley and Patterson. What about our 3 really good corners Asante, Shep, and Brown. How about our emerging star at LB Gaither. What about our solid and ancient OT's Thomas and Runyan. How about our Pro Bowl Guard Shawn Andrews. How about our over achieving WR Curtis. I think those guys also would have to be added to your list. The fact is no one is on the bubble before pads and full contact occurs. There maybe long shots, good position battles at OTA's but I don't buy players on the Bubble. You need to see them with contact performing the play book.

Nuuudlz... You are judging him way to fast. How can you correctly judge his burst of speed when he didn't touch field that often in rookie season and then had a hernia actually not groin injury(I thought groin to but I found out yesterday it was hernia)for the complete season. I don't agree with your analogy of his college career. At Michigan he was a big play guy and he also has a little size to him. I like Reggie Brown don't get me wrong he has improved each season, but I think we miss judge his explosive capabilities. His rookie year I think he was an over achiever in regards to burst of speed. I don't believe he hs that big burst of speed we saw that first year. I know there are reasons that could alter why we haven't seen it but if you judge a man for not being explosive for his circumstance(Injury) it is only fair to throw it right back at you with Brown (Victim of poor coordination and chemistry on offense). The fact is I feel this guy has some serious upside, he might even emerge as a playmaker this year. Right now it is only one opinion but hey we will see the season is not to far away.
Nuuuudlz

7:38 pm ET
hei: Your giving Avant waaaaaaay too much credit. He played through A groin injury, so credit to his toughness. But the guy is not explosive. Never has been. He came out of college as a move the chains guy, not a playmaker. Brown and Baskett are both more explosive than him (or do you conveniently ignore catches of +40 yrds?). 22 catches and not even 300 yrds in a season is not worthy of that slot position, injury or no. I'm sick of hearing about his big camp last season. Lito was injured, so who did he train against? Will James and Hoselio Hanson! Not quality competition! I am not dismissing him, but this year, he will have to scrap with Lito and Sheldon. This is his first "real" training camp, so he is on the chopping block until he shows up. I garauntee . . . he will not be Mcnabb's favorite target this season.

LB... I don't agree with a lot of the blogs out here on LB's. Honestly Akeem Jordan is more than a ST player. Jordan is our man reserve at LB. The man is pushing for playing time. Studebaker and Mays are both real good LB's. Mays I believe personally is easily on the team, he only needs to be Togafau out fo the reserve MLB. Ok I can't say or will not go out on a limb and say Studebaker is in this year. Bioman was brought here to push rookies along that is a certain. He is not a permenant fix though not even close. Bioman is here to move the progression of Studebaker along for this year or he is here for one season to fill void until Studebaker is ready. Honestly I feel Bioman is at the mercy of a young player. The position is there for Studebaker to win but if he can't the vet Bioman is here for this season. It will not be the end of the world for Studebaker if he doesn't make the teamm this year, because short of an absolutely horrible Camp and Preseason I would say Studebaker is a lock for practise team if he doesn't make 53 man roster. Well this is my view, just one of many we will see how good some of us are at scouting players reall soon.

seb109... I know sites say things like that but no one is on the bubble right now. It is way to early for a contributor last year to be on the bubble. Avant played through a hernia last year and hung in there. This is one tuff WR. He is more explosive then Baskett, G lewis, and maybe Brown. This guy is supposed to be one of the most improved players. Honestly I see a small chance of Mcbride making this team, I think Greg Lewis is gone, he had his chance just will never be anything but a 3 or 4. Hey though right now we are all just shooting bull. Like I said we will know nothing until Camp gets started and after a at least 2 preseason games.

Peter... I believe you need to rework your list of recievers. It is really uncommon to carry 6. Normally we carry 5. If you put that 6 wr in you take a roster spot away from a RB, OR OL, OR DL. I think OL is a bigger concern and will recieve the extra player. Even though we ave a lot of talent at WR that is the hastle of a 53 man roster.

I disagree, studebaker has the best stats out of any of the remaining lb's. the only thing standing in front of him is the playbook. other wise, athletically, he is on the team.
