Wide receiver DeSean Jackson, the Eagles' second of two second-round picks in April's NFL Draft, agreed to terms on a four-year deal Sunday, ensuring he will be under contract in time for training camp, which begins July 21 when rookies and selected veterans are scheduled to report.
The Eagles utilized the 49th overall selection on Jackson, who figures to contribute immediately as a return man and could factor into the mix as a slot receiver as a rookie. But he answers an immediate need for a playmaker on special teams, alleviating the stress that sometimes was handed to running back Brian Westbrook in high-pressure situations.
In three seasons at Cal, Jackson put together as many highlight tapes as he did touchdowns. Despite scoring 29 total touchdowns in his 36 career games, Jackson is most known for his jaw-dropping punt returns, of which he returned six for scores, two shy of the NCAA career record.
Still no slouch as a receiver, Jackson finished his career with 2,423 yards and 22 touchdowns, both third in Cal's history. In 2006, he topped the 1,000-yard plateau.
Also as a sophomore in 2006, Jackson was honored with the inaugural Randy Moss Award, given to the nation's top return man. In 2007, he added All-Pac 10 second-team honors to his growing list of acclaim. This season, he will grace the cover of EA Sports' NCAA Football 09, traditionally given to one of the previous season's most exciting college football players that have moved on to the NFL.
The work in training camp will be important to Jackson's progress, as he missed much of spring workouts with a hamstring injury. With Jackson in the fold, only one of the Eagles' 10 draft picks is without a contract - defensive tackle Trevor Laws, the Eagles' first pick, a second-round selection out of Notre Dame.

Man the return game just got a lot better with Jackson and Booker. This is the one area we have been lacking for some time now. In years past I didnt really think of someone breaking one but now I acutally believe we will this year.

This yr probably Booker and Jackson. The sooner Jaccson can get more repa at WR then someone else will have to fill that void. With him being a rookie that should be a couple yrs out. Like Steve Smith in Carolina when he 1st became their main threat he was still returning kiccs.

McNabb was supposed 2 say damn OD is hurt now we are going 2 lose 2 the Vikings in the 1st game of the playoffs. We have no chance without him. OD is a joke, he tried to throw Tony _omo under the bus last year.

spammer... Not meaning to be rude but really Mcnabb the problem????? I mean a man gets his feelings hurt and instead of confronting Mcnabb he causes a huge distraction and splits the locker room up! This is your innocent victim? The comments Mcnabb made were not that bad! He was under scrutiny his self! He was stating that even without TO he was going to lead this teamm to the super bowl. As I remember he did just that. Also Yes in the past Dallas had good fortune. The fact is sinse 2000 that franchise has been horrible, correct me if I am wrong they haven't won a playoff game this decade! The Eagles are one of two Organizations who have been very successful. The organization who can claim to have more success is the Pats. The fact is we have won the NFC East five times this decade so far, Four NFC championship appearences, One super bowl appearence, and now Andy Reid has spread his coaching staff out across the NFL. Sorry but Philly has been much more successful this decade as compared to Dallas. I also believe we are something like 12-4 against Dallas this decade. You know what they can shine those rings at home while watching Philly compete for the super bowl this year.

After a certain amount of time a championship becomes irealevant. Not sure when that time is for everyone but with me it is somewhere between 15-20 years. My reasoning is most players in the league at that time will in most cases be retired at that time and also a whole new generation of people would be watching football. I mean does the Jets winning Super Bowl 3 mean more than the Eagles winning the NFL championship in 1960? They both are events that most people on this site can't even recall.I like 2 keep things 2 recent history.

My bad hei2183, you're right. BTW, don't assume I'm a Cowboys fan becuase I stick up for a former Eagle... I used to only follow the Eagles, but with free agency, now I have to follow the players, cause you never know where they'll go.
I think T.O. leaving this team was due to McNabb's attitude, not T.O.'s. Many disagree, many agree, but either way, the past is the past. I'm just tired of the same old same old "Oh, he's a peice of crap cause he left us. Screw him, Eagles rule" I love football, I love the players, and I don't think they deserve what we say about them. Maybe we can make it to the playoff's this year to prove eveybody wrong, but as of now, we have no rings, which means we have no right to say anybody sucks. When we get a ring, we can have a say, but right now the 'Boys are the ones with 5 shiny reminders that we haven't done enough with what we've had...

Wait A sec in the two years after TO we are 1 for 2 in NFC East Titles!!! Hey same mark as you with TO! Oh yeah in head to head competition since your boys got TO we are 3-1 against you. Hey Big D just Know Philly bringing the brooms to the Link on Dec 28 when we sweep dat a**!!!

Sorry that post was on a different topic. My bad

My point is no matter what any team does there can always be an alternate route. Whatever the Eagles do there is always a large group of fans that finds what is wrong with the move instead of whats good with the move. I agree that they are not a locc 2 reach the Super Bowl but is anyone? All you can ask is for a competitive team year in and year out and after that let the cards fall where they may. Hopefully the Eagles can get off to a good start have a great season and carry that momentum to the top.

Thanks for your answers, I was just trying to open up a debate and get different opinions

JayJay766 07/21/08 12:44 pm ET |
victor1244 teams use all sorts of criteria when they draft. Not just best available. Besides 32 teams mean 32 different boards so there is no definite way 2 determine where he ranked among all players available.
|
rdbanky@... 07/21/08 12:37 pm ET |
Jackson definitely wasn't the best player in the draft, but he sounds like a mighty good one to me.
|
victor1244 07/21/08 12:25 pm ET |
Pretty impressive punt return stats for Jackson in college, bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!! Any opinions on this statement?: If NFL teams pick best player available on the board in the draft, that means there were 48 players better than Jackson.
