Fan-Demonium: Will Justice Be Served?

Donovan McNabb has a sore shoulder. You never want your starting quarterback to have any physical issues, but it helps that the Eagles know about the injury well before training camp. The best thing for a sore shoulder is rest. I'm sure his throws will be carefully watched in camp to make sure his arm is doing okay. The key here is that a sore shoulder is mostly discomfort. McNabb can play through this if he has to. This isn't as bad as a sprained wrist, injured finger, or some ailment that could really affect his throwing. With lots of rest between now and training camp, the shoulder soreness may go away for the most part.

Don't read too much into who is playing where in the camps.  Kevin Kolb is playing ahead of A.J. Feeley right now, but I think that is mainly in an effort to get Kolb more reps and to let him work with the starters or top backups as much as possible. Feeley is the veteran quarterback. Kolb is only entering his second season.  I think the coaches would leave the spot open to who earns it at training camp. Feeley would have the inside track because of his experience, but a really good performance by Kolb in the preseason could solidify him as the backup quarterback.

Dan Klecko has officially moved from fullback to defensive tackle. Klecko had a tough transition in trying to make it at fullback. I think the Eagles really valued him as a special teams player and felt fullback was his best chance to win a job with the team. He weighs about 275 pounds and that is just huge for a fullback. Jason Davis is listed at 245 pounds, more typical for a fullback.

Tommy Lawlor, goeagles99 on the Discussion Boards, is an amateur football scout and devoted Eagles fan. He's followed the team for almost 20 years. Tommy has been trained by an NFL scout in the art of scouting and player evaluation and runs www.scoutsnotebook.com.
I still think Klecko can make the team, but it will be in a Jason Short-type of role. He needs to stand out on special teams in the preseason games. I'm not talking about just having a good game. Klecko needs to make impact plays in coverage and to block really well. It will be interesting to see how well Klecko does at defensive tackle. He's a quick, up-the-field guy. Those players can be effective in our scheme, but the Eagles have been playing more two-gap in the last few years.

Winston Justice played right guard in place of Shawn Andrews this week. Some fans (and Justice) are curious about the move. Some are wondering if the Eagles are moving him to guard full-time.  I don't see it like that at all. Putting him out there made Justice the top backup lineman. The Eagles need to get Justice on the field as much as possible. They need to find out what kind of ability he has. Can he play guard? Is he a left or right tackle? 2008 will be a big summer for Justice. He isn't projected to get on the field much during the season, so he needs to play well at training camp and in the preseason games.

Both Jon Runyan and Tra Thomas are free agents at the end of the season. Justice may get one of their jobs, but he needs to earn it with a strong showing this summer. Justice ought to embrace every opportunity to get on the field. Every snap he takes could help shape his future. Something else to keep in mind, both Thomas and Runyan have said that they would like to continue playing in the future. Maybe one or both of them could return for the 2009 season.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

  • Michael Strahan apparently is retiring from the NFL. As an Eagles fan, I can't say I'll miss him. As a football purist, I'll certainly miss him. Strahan is one of the best left defensive ends I've ever seen. He was a great pass rusher for a long time.  How old is Strahan? He entered the league when Rich Kotite was the Eagles coach and Herschel Walker was the key to the offense. That seems like a lifetime ago. Maybe we can talk Strahan into taking Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck with him.

A lot of people will remember Strahan as the guy who holds the single season sack record. Think what you want about that. It doesn't really matter to me whether he or Mark Gastineau holds the official record. In my mind, Reggie White's performance in 1987 trumps what both of them did. Reggie had 21 sacks in only 12 games. 1987 was the year of the strike. That cost him four games. Strahan had 22.5 in 16 games. Gastineau had 22 in 16 games. I have no doubt that White would have the record all to himself if he had a full 16-game schedule that year. Twenty-one sacks in 12 games is off-the-charts good. Think about this ...it took Jevon Kearse two full seasons and two partial seasons to come up with 22 sacks in his time in Philadelphia.
  • The Bears cut running back Cedric Benson.  They spent the fourth-overall pick in the 2005 draft on him, but things did not work out. Benson's situation shows you just how hard it is to be a good pro football player. He never lacked the talent. Benson had trouble putting it all together and playing well on a consistent basis. He started off behind Thomas Jones. In the second half of 2006, Benson averaged almost five yards a carry and looked to have figured things out. The Bears traded Jones and gave the starting job to Benson. He responded with a poor season in 2007 and a disastrous offseason. I think cutting him was a smart move. Benson has ability and won't be unemployed for long, but at some point the player has to prove to the team he is 100 percent committed to being the best football player he can be.
  • Cleveland center LeCharles Bentley was released by the Cleveland Browns. Bentley was a coveted free agent prior to the 2006 season. Rumors were that the Eagles had interest, but he instead signed with the Browns. Bentley hurt his knee in the summer of 2006, before even playing a game for his new team. He's struggled to get healthy ever since then. He passed a physical, so the question now becomes how well he can play. He simply wasn't in the future plans for the Browns, who have Hank ""Honey Buns"" Fraley at center. Wonder where he will end up?
  • Reports out of Minnesota make it sound as though third-year quarterback Tarvaris Jackson is making a lot of progress this year. This is a critical season for him, coach Brad Childress, and the team in general. Jackson has to show that he is capable of being a good NFL starter. Last season he finished with a rating of just under 71. That has to get better. The Vikings have a very good running game. All they need from the passing game is to limit mistakes and deliver the occasional big play.

Childress did get the team to improve from 6-10 to 8-8 in 2007.  That is a step in the right direction, but Minnesota fans and ownership want to see the team in the playoffs. Anything short of that in 2008 will be disappointing, especially when you consider how aggressive the team was in free agency this offseason. The Vikings have not had double digit wins since the 2000 season. That is hard to believe with the amount of talented players they've had in that time span.

When a key player like McNabb has to "Play through an injury" it usually means that even though he isn't going to play well, we still feel he's better than our back up. You don't win Titles or Super Bowls "Playing through injuries." You end up 8 - 8! Let's just hope 5 is healthy this season, and doesn't have to play through another injury.

Kolb HAS to win the backup spot this year. He was our first pick last year for God's sake. If he can't beat out Feeley this year, I don't have a lot of faith in him taking over for Donovan in the future.

Excellent post lance. If not Ramsey, then Reagor which still has Kleck on the outside looking in.

Winston Justice is a stud at Right tackle...that is where he played at USC and that is where he will start for the Eagles in 2009. Left tackle is not his natural position. I like Herremans at the Left tackle position in 2009. Donovan McNabb will be a force in the NFC this season...from beginning to end and that includes the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl. Get on board with McNabb or find a different team to root for. Kolb will have to wait until McNabb is ready to retire. This is Donovan's team. Finally, the Dan Klecko experiment did not work...The Eagles do not have a starting FB on the current roster and should have drafted Owen Schmitt in the fourth round. Klecko will not make the Eagles final roster. The DTs are Patterson, Bunkley, Laws, Ramsey and Howard.

LOL this sounds kinda familiar, doesn't it? "The key here is that a sore shoulder is mostly discomfort. McNabb can play through this if he has to."

Great article, I still can't believe Han k "Honey Buns" Fraley beat him out in the end.
