McNabb Down, But Certainly Not Out

The date was June 10, 2004. Ironically, it was four years ago to the date when the Eagles did the same thing to Donovan McNabb that they are doing now. They shut him down. It was the final day of that spring's Passing Camp. McNabb had a case of tendinitis in his shoulder, and as a precautionary measure, the Eagles' excellent athletic training staff kept McNabb out of practice and pointed toward training camp.

This is the same thing. The time is diferent and the circumstances are different and certainly there is a lot more attention directed toward McNabb's shoulder, but the move is the same in its nature: To make sure McNabb is 100 percent healthy for training camp.

Andy Reid will touch on the subject with more knowledge and more detail after today's practice, but I know how you are: You are going to leap to conclusions. You are going to panic, if only a little bit.

No need.

Sure, I want McNabb on the field. And I honestly think that if push came to shove and McNabb needed to be out there, he could go out and play and throw the ball very well. But this isn't the time to force things. This is the time to make sure a player who has been in the league as long as McNabb has been in the NFL gets himself right for the season.

Now, the natural question is what this means down the line for McNabb. Nothing at all is the answer, if the shoulder tendonitis responds to treatment. History says McNabb will be fine in five weeks, when training camp arrives.

But it something the Eagles will monitor very closely. They want McNabb ready to go on July 22 when rookies and selected veterans practice. They want him out there for two-a-day practices leading up to the September 7 opener against the Rams, and they want him razor-sharp for the start of the season.

In the meantime, though, Kevin Kolb gets an opportunity to work with the first-team offense for an entire week. That benefits him greatly. He is only going to improve with each rep.

The point is that McNabb's shoulder discomfort has an origin, and that the Eagles are doing the smart thing here. Nobody is mad with panic around here, but I understand the nature of the fans and the immediate reaction is to worry a little bit. I don't think there is a need to do that, because the Eagles are on top of this and, besides, they've dealt with this before and McNabb rebounded beautifully in 2004, right?

What it means is that McNabb isn't likely to have a lot of down time between now and July 22 Unless, of course, if rest is the proper route to take. Otherwise, McNabb would spend a lot of time with Rick Burkholder and his staff in the athletic training room of the NovaCare Complex.

The good news is that the Eagles know the proper course of action and that they have been through this many times before with many different players ove the years. This is nothing close to a long-term injury, or even a long-term concern.

Remember the case history here: Three years ago, to the day, the Eagles did the same thing with McNabb. He went on to have a Pro Bowl season and then take the Eagles to the Super Bowl. Let's hope history repeats itself, plus one more win.

McNabb is going to be on the field at Lehigh University, and he's going to be fine. For the next three days, we get to see more of Kolb, which is not a bad thing. It's always fun to see a young quarterback grow with the additional practice repetitions.

about that horse JB..yea,..that pull-up was bizarre...you play to win the game. unless the jock was concerned for its safety,..and apparently he wasn't,..you race to win or do the best you can...he should be fined big time. that was unacceptable.

JB, people hammer Spuds because of the lack of honest analysis, not because he doesn't speculate. Perhaps my memory doesn't serve me well, but I don't remember him spouting all the "company line" type stuff when this website was winning Best NFL Site in 2003, 2004, and 2005 (I think those were the years that it won). We can all try to channel our inner Zen and accept Spuds for what he is and go to other sites for objective analysis, but it's still annoying sometimes (i.e. my personal pet peave last season with the constant "Considine is a great fit and is always around the ball!" nonsense).

Yeah he got bored, someone was getting too close to finding out his real name, address, phone number and having some real fun with him. I actually went on the giants site about 3 weeks ago, they are the saddest bunch of people I've ever seen. I didn't even have to spit out the senseless, non-football related hatemail that big blue used to on here, and I had kids calling me a "waste of human life" within 2 days! What could I have said to anger the "giants nation" so bad? Someone was asking people to list the top 10 QB's right now and I didn't have eli in my top 10. Which he isn't. Then we got intom the whole "how many rings do you have" and I asked them if they knew how many rings the steelers had or better yet how many bowl championships does Penn State have and they got all worked up. It was fun. Seriously how do you answer rejects whose first and only defense is "how many rings does the eagles have?" The eagles could win the superbowl this year and I guarantee all we would hear is "The eagles only have one?" we have 2, or 3. Then everyone goes back and forth and basically the steelers come out the winners in that conversation, it's the only way it could end. But with everything the eagles accomplished this decade so far, wouldn't at least 1 superbowl win before 2011 make them the dynasty for this past decade? Has there been any other team WITHOUT CHEATING that has accomplished what the eagles have? Please I don't want to hear about new england, the jury will be out on them for the next 10 years. I have one question for b.bell03, the chinese ivory tower will take your tickets and censor what who? Are you ripping us or was that a compliment, pardon my ignorance but I'm confused.

Does someone have a specific question for me? I'm just a little busy presently taking care of my washing machine that seems to be suffering from an obstructed bowel or inflammation in the shoulder area. Keep it brief and no commentary please....i've already read it.

McNabb is just getting rested for training camp. Real interesting that so many are excited about Kolb. This guy's situation is like Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. Kevin you are going to be holding a clipboard for at least 4 more years so get used to it. McNabb is going to be in the Pro Bowl and Desean Jackson(Long Beach Poly's Finest) is going to win Rookie of the Year. Jason-Los Angeles

LOL at the Pavano comment. Anyway, it's the same story as it always is, but it's hard not to get frustrated by Big Red and Spuds. Sure, McNabb had this problem 4 years ago. But guess what: McNabb is 4 years older now, which is an eternity for an football player in his 30's. He may heal more slowly or less successfully. This is not "McNabb hating", this is just wanting to make sure the Eagles don't throw away another season on trying to prove that an injured McNabb isn't a concern, and I'm glad Kevin Kolb is here instead of Koy Detmer. But Garcia sure would be nice, too. :)

JB, here's the link, http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080610/hl_afp/ushealthherpes_080610160601 if it works. Speaking of herpes-infected roaches, does our buddy still make guest appearances on here or did he finally get a life? I'm just having fun with the whole Mcnabb thing right now, 4 years ago I would have gotten all wound up but now, whatever. I'm off this week so I'll be on here seeing what's going on. Interesting story on sports and how games can be fixed. I wouldn't say too much on here if your so sure, I don't want to read about a mob hit on some eagles fan in texas! Lots of new people on here, the new layout is cool, I can print all this stuff out and read it on the throne, posts and all.

well, after all these years of McNabb we will really see what he's made out of when he's on the bench and Kolb is playing well. In this scenario will McNabb be a team player or sulk ?

Correction - it's 4 years to the date, Spuds...anyway, this is A LOT of overreaction, simply because we're talking about McNabb in Philly. Is this really a story with another team in another city? We all understand that 5's health is a big deal, but let's all lighten up and have some optimism for once heading into a season. I'm not saying we should all be blind and coat everything with green-tinted sugar, but let's all apply more critical thinking to something before we react. Deal?

You guys are off base blaming Spadaro for this. He has a job to do. He is a shill for the Birds and we can't expect him to jeapordize his job by telling the truth even if he knows it. The blame goes to Reid and Morningweh, etc. for being flat out liars about the situation. And FrancisX was right. Reid will sit there with disgust on his face because somebody even dares to ask the question and then will spit out some inane non-response. You can bet your bottom dollar there is more to the Jackson and Samuel injuries than they are telling us too.
