Head coach Andy Reid updated the media on Donovan McNabb
's injured shoulder Tuesday, saying the quarterback's tendinitis in his throwing shoulder is "not a big deal" and that he will be ready for training camp, which starts July 22.
McNabb had been on a "pitch count" of sorts and on Tuesday it was announced that he would not practice for the remainder of the week. The June passing camp will run through Thursday at the NovaCare Complex.
Reid compared McNabb's injury to one he suffered during 2004's OTAs, with which the team took similar precautions.
"We will back off of him just like we did in 2004, and he should be ready for training camp," Reid said. "No surgery, and there should be no repercussions from it. He'll just get treatment for about two weeks here, and he'll be ready to go."
Reid said that he didn't know what specifically caused the injury, but that it had started to bother McNabb slightly in April's post-draft mini-camp, and had flared up again recently. The team had been limiting McNabb's reps and decided to shut him down until training camp.
Reid said that most of McNabb's rehabilitation will consist of rest, and that the quarterback will be able to begin throwing in a few weeks, before training camp starts. Reid said that McNabb will initially rehab in Philadelphia before going back to his offseason home in Arizona.
Wide receiver Kevin Curtis raised some eyebrows in published reports last week when he proposed that McNabb's shoulder was bothering him. After Monday's practice, McNabb admitted to the discomfort for the first time, but also said that he wasn't worried.
"I know it will get better," he said.
Reid doesn't believe that McNabb's new offseason training regiment with Brett Fischer, who works extensively with Major League pitchers, caused the injury, and he strongly refused the notion that it would hamper McNabb during the season.
If the Eagles had a game this week, McNabb "could have played," Reid said.

Where's the optimism here? I hate using the word "if," but as long as we have Westbrook, our offense is fine. I'm sick of hearing about #1 receiver- who cares? IF L.J. is healthy, the o-line plays hard, and Westbrook does his thing- the offense will take care of itself. It's all up to the D, especially consdiring how tough our division will be this year. We need Dawkins to show us that he's still got something left in the tank (and I know he does)- we need the D line to become the monster they are supposed to be, we need to keep Lito (we're not getting compensation for him this year anyway)...assuming these things go right- it's our division to lose, simply put.

I think the people on this board show more concern about Donovan McNabb than the front office. After last season; he asked for playmakers. The Eagles didn't get him any in the draft or free agency or via trade. I know there's alot of positive thinkers out there;but come on. Lorenzo Booker. 1-15 Miami let us have him for a fouth round draft pick. Eventhough no one wants to admit it or not Desean Jackson is not going to make a difference this year. So we have basically the same offensive team we had last year. You know the one that miss the playoffs.

Francis is exactly right. Not only has McNabb had a horrendous history with injuries affecting his play, but he is older now, too. Plus, I'm not sure why this is our superbowl year anymore than 2004 was. We had T.O. and as much as I hate him, he is a legitimate #1 receiver. Right now, we have no real #1, which hampers us a bit. I mean we can still get there, provided we run a balanced offense like they did when Garcia came in, but I don't see this as THE YEAR any more than I see every year. I'm still reserving judgment on this team. I love em, but I'm not going to make lofty claims. The main reason I feel we have a chance is because of our sick defense. If Chris Clemons plays how he is supposed to, and the rest of the Eagles D players progress as they always seem to, we will have a great D line with a sick Linebacking core and even better secondary options (assuming we keep Lito, which is not likely).

Come on fellas! Why is everyone acting like they're not used to this routine? This is another example of our organization coddling our overly-sensitive Quarterback. They always mention some minor injury to give 5 and excuse going into a season. If he plays well, then he's a warrior for playing through it, but if he struggles, then they use it as an excuse. Same with the thumb, the hernia, etc. He'll be fine and if we win, you'll never hear of it again after the initial "McNabb is a warrior" praise. God forbid we lose, because then we'll hear about it EVERY DAY!

I am glad everyone else is quite optimistic but its amazing to me that so many people are. It seems ridiculous. I mean honestly, are there that many people who have watched D-Mac's career who are truely positive about this??? This is a guy who came back from a serious knee injury last year and clearly played too early. He played hurt and it hurt the team. He did the same thing with the sports hernia. Grant it I am glad he was a warrior, but McNabb has hardly ever had a season where he wasn't hurt. And this is supposed to be the season he comes back free of injury, 100%, ready to lead us to victory!!! WOooo!!!... And hes hurt already??? If this shoulder tears during the season man...

We'll just pull a Tom Brady and keep him on the injury report for a few years.

I agree that this will be great for Kolb to get some reps with the 1st team. Just trying to put some positive spin on a story that will get blow so far out of proportion by the media.
I think that #5 will be good to go as Reid has said.... and like I said, Kolb will have some extra reps if the worst should happen during the reg season... and that could not be a bad thing.
As I say every year... this is the year the Eagles break the Philly sports title drought.

Now...just how long do you think it will take ESPN to start another Jeff Garcia controversy? After all...he is looking for the big payday...Just more fuel for the vultures! McNabb will be back in full force, without a doubt! This is our year baby!!! E A G L E S !!!!

McNabb is fine. Tendenitis is just like a severe pulled muscle. He'll take a couple weeks off, and come back full swing in training camp. Don't worry about it.

Eagles Fans MCNABB IS fine. He needs to rest a little probably be gone in a week or something

Maybe he hasnt thrown. December to May is a long time. As long as nothing is torn then he just needs rest. If I hear that it is a tear a month from now, I will be pissed!!!

who really cares about this shoulder deal. i mean Mcnabb is tough as hell and he'll be fine!! if he isn't, then he isn't and we play Kolb take our lumps and deal with that. i have been an eagle fan for 25 plus years so i didn't used to have this kind of faith but with Reid,JJ,Morning and the support of a great owner now a days....bring whatever on....whenever they want....we'll be ready and have the opportunity to win!!!

hmmm.... injured in 2004... superbowl in 2004-05... im smelling another superbowl!!!
but seriously, mcnabb will be fine. abd uh... brian... knowing the news in philly, they will probably blow it only slightly outta proportion.

briann85 06/10/08 12:44 pm ET |
I am down in Florida, so I don't know what the media (Comcast, Philly Daily News, etc.) will do to blow this outta proportion. I agree with enco, if he is changing his mechanics; anatomically the change in angle of muscle usage in his shoulder will casue an increase in inflammation (tendonitis) in his shoulder causing the pain he may be experiencing. Taking the week off from throwing passes at full speed is a double edge sword... he may miss getting his timing down with the receiving corp, but he will be able to heal his arm and continue to work on his mechanics late June- early July in order to get ready for training camp. This is not similar to his sports hernia injury, he will be just fine when it comes time for camp to open. If the change in mechanics will decrease those passes that come up short while he is in the pocket and ends up throwing at the feet of his receivers; let him rest and give the young pups some reps. E-A-G-L-E-S...EAGLES!!!

This shoulder thing is not a big deal, if there was a game tomorrow mcnabb would be playing. The eagles and Mcnabb have alot to prove but they got to be smart with it being so early. 5 will be in arizona and he will be in training camp and he'll start the year. This will only help Kolb and his progress and this will help mcnabb now and down the road when the eagles are in the final weeks of the season

The only thing that's off is they don't have much to put on the webpage, so they gotta go with something.

FrancisXMcCann 06/10/08 12:08 pm ET |
Damon, this whole shoulder thing seems kind of odd to me as well. It kind of reminds me of the Donovan sports hernia injury. First they say its nothing, they are just limiting Donovan's reps and giving him "pitch counts". They want everyone to think he is fine. And now they sit him and are publicly acknowledging the injury. Why try to hide it unless it is worse than you originally thought? Remember Donovan played through the sports hernia and they kept telling us everything was fine. I am not calling anything here... but something just seems off.

damon, I don't know if it is being blown out of proportion at this point, but didn't we hear a while back that McNabb was working with a pitching coach? If that is the case, his refined mechanics might be starting to mess with his shoulder. In any case, I think you are wrong that McNabb is the only one who can lead the team to winning. Feely has done it in the past, although not last year, but I think Kolb is going to surprise most people when he gets the chance to play.

damon_cherico@... 06/10/08 11:23 am ET |
Is it just me or are they making a little too much of this shoulder issue? Unless there was some serious problem then why keep bringing it up? All I keep hearing from the idiot anti-Eagles people at work is how this is the end of McNabb. Are we just playing possum with the NFC East here? is this like the Tom Brady injury report thing in New England?
Let's face it. If this team is going to win, it's going to be McNabb that leads them to winning.
