Lito's Arrival: A Good Thing For Everyone

Business as usual? Not quite. Lito Sheppard flashed his trademark smile, showed a ton of professionalism and leadership, and met reporters outside the NovaCare Complex just minutes before Friday night's mandatory 6:30 team meeting to kick off the Eagles' post-draft mini-camp.

Sheppard, after speaking with head coach Andy Reid during the week, decided to put aside any ill feelings regarding his contract situation -- reportedly the source of his discontent -- and came to work.

"We all know the situation at hand, it still stands unresolved, but I'm here, I'm here to practice and that's what I'm focused on right now," said the veteran cornerback and two-time Pro Bowl player. "That's pretty much it."

Can the situation, Sheppard was asked, be resolved?

"I think it can get resolved," he said. "That's one of the reasons why I'm here working toward that."

Sheppard probably surprised a lot of people out there by reporting, and it's nothing but good news that he is here, working with the team. Still to be determined, of course, is how the presence of newly-signed cornerback Asante Samuel impacts Sheppard, who has been starting at the left cornerback position since 2003 with the Eagles. On the day the Eagles signed Samuel, Reid designated Samuel the starter at left cornerback.

And since that time, it has been widely speculated that the Eagles would trade Sheppard, a first-round draft pick in 2002. The team said it had a lot of interest in Sheppard, but in the end decided not to trade him.

Sheppard is taking a positive approach to the situation..

"In the situation I'm in, you have to look at the positive side of it," he said. "That's just my nature. I'm probably the least controversial person in this world. I just want to continue to do that."

How can it best be resolved? Sheppard didn't talk much about next steps.

"I don't know. That's for everybody to figure out, and we're working toward that right now," said Sheppard.

Sheppard did not discuss the specifics of his conversation with Reid, but he said the talk spurred him to report on Friday night. What we know is that with Sheppard here, the Eagles can at least address him face to face, rather than over a phone call or indirectly with Sheppard's agent.

The Eagles, with Sheppard on board, have a great setup at cornerback with Samuel, Sheppard, Sheldon Brown and Joselio Hanson lining up, in whatever order, as the top four on the board. Given all the pieces the Eagles have added to the defense in the offseason, Sheppard is excited about the roster.

He knows how good the defense can potentially be.

"We added some great additions to this team, and it's definitely going to be great to see how it all comes together," he said. "It's exciting, and there is a lot of time before the season gets here, but up until now it's been a lot of good moves made."

Sheppard said he was satisfied with what Reid said -- "Obviously, I'm here" -- but he didn't elaborate further. It's likely that Sheppard won't speak further on the matter until the situation is resolved. Reid meets the media on Saturday and is probably going to keep what he and Sheppard discussed between them.

All in all, it was a positive first day for Sheppard, for the Eagles, for everybody. Only quarterback Donovan McNabb missed the team meeting -- he was excused as he was being inducted into his high school Hall of Fame, and is expected to be at practice on Saturday -- and everyone was in great spirits.

Sheppard deserves a lot of credit for having an open, positive mind. Reid deserves credit, too, for turning what many believed was a no-way, no-how picture into something that offers hope and a positive resolution for everyone.

Eagles football is back, with a bunch of fresh faces mixing in with the veterans. Practice starts on Saturday and runs through Monday, and the seeds of a season are planted now.

Check some tidbits out... Grumblings in Carolina... Delhomme 1st throws were erratic after Tommy John. === Otah already out with ankle. === Jon Beason out with wrist surgery. === Chuck Godfrey was starter at FS from the 1st snap. === Peppers has switched sides for the 1st time. To make room for Tyler Brayton? === And the DS sent 1 over the punters head. That top 10 could be top 5!

WRs at mini,..running too hard so early,.i smell plenty of strains and pulls coming up,..plus.below: --Sheppard clearly is struggling with his current status as the No. 3 corner. When he would come off the field after taking his reps, he usually stood by himself on the opposite side of the field, away from the starters

Here's my critique,..agree somewhat with JB,..'cept fer Matt Jones...cuz I see MJ = Hank Baskett,...and Reg Lewis=very good #4 currently...and G. Lewis suks...beat it..may have some speed,.but his quickness is not organized like DJ..his feet go all over the place,..that's why on special teams the PR makes one move and Greeeg misses the tackle,.runs right by, like a MIG. I'm happy we got DJ,..but I'm predicting somebody will give him a run for his money,if he's not ready,..somebody like Sampy,..who has to be chomping at the bit after getting hurt last year. Lotta competition...lotta unknown "PRO" talent.

Here's my take on the WR's... Baskett would be the logical choice. He's big and fast. Never really messed up much. And he's made some big plays. But he was the 5th last year. And for being 6'4'' he has never really gone up to get 1. So that size doesn't help if your ability doesn't match it. And he didn't really get better. So you wonder if he doesn't want it or has hit his ceiling. === Lewis is dainty. I'm pretty sure my sister could whip his A**. But he is quick and from a DC's point of view... he's more of a terror than the others. And he has come through a coupla times. === Avant is probably the best of the bunch. He looked OK. But he scares ZERO. And you wonder how much better he can be. === I have watched tons of Ohio St. games and have no recollection of Bam Childress. === Gasperson has the size and some good hands. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as 5th. === Golden sounds pretty good. Good size at least. Not really anything you can say bout him other than Morelli was tossin him balls. And Morelli had Penn State'rs wishin for the days of Sacca. JOHN SACCA! So who knows what he can do? === Hardy was coached by He Who Shall Not Be Named... Who knows what he can do? === We got another FA that has some size and led some school or S***hole conference in All-Time receiving... So he can't be bad. Maybe he'll make it? === But Brown/Curtis and DJ in the slot a little with Avant and Baskett would be fine with me. But it would be Great to have a guy like my new Hero Matt Jones to come in after camp. Nice RZ target and has the speed and size to play Z. WHich would allow Curtis to move inside on some sets. === So... Curtis with Jones backin up. And Brown on the other side with DJ in the slot? That looks much better to me. === Took a look at the Jags roster a while ago. Not sure Jones doesn't make that TEAM now. They suck at WR. They have 2 starters. Porter and RegWilliams. But after that? Troy Williamson and Dennis Northcutt. And they traded 7 picks for 2 DE's. So I don't think they drafted a WR. I'd be shocked if Jones didn't make that TEAM. I thought he got paid to much. Because I knew he made that 5 mill. But he only made 1.8 last year. Thats nothin. So my dreams of a 6'6'' RZ threat may have been washed.

I agree with ya JB on the 4,5,6, PS and FA WR's but I kinda like Baskett just a little better than the rest because of his combination of size and speed. He took a step backwards last year from the promise he showed as a rookie but I still think at his age he has the biggest upside potential. As for Lito, great to have him at camp! Hope he will remain a happy Eagle. He is showing a good team attitude which will help with his next contract be it with Philly or elsewhere.

Say Bri... What I thought were DeSean Jacksons Negatives... seem to be Positives. He seems like he's comin in with a chip on his shoulder and is determined to prove everybody wrong. He even seems like he's workin hard to do it... Pretty much opposite of what I thought he was all about. Of course it still remains to be seen. But that how it looks to me.

apo... Guess your right. kgal has been dying to get No. 1 post. === I think if you give Lito a raise. Gotta give 1 to Brown as well. After all... he's the 1 that lost his job. === And bout switchin sides. My friend showed me plenty of games in past years where Lito went right. Not even slightly worried bout that anymore.

I've laid BIG money on BIG BROWN!!! So much so that I couldn't sleep much. So thats pretty BIG. I don't care he startin in 20. He's the best horse. === I am concerned with a coupla 20-1's out there. They say 2-3 have been tearin up that track. I thought and thought... No trifecta this year. Straight up BIG BROWN! Don't wanna jinx my bet... So I can't say exactly how much. But somewhere in the area of $499 to $501. Gotta hit this 1. If I do? 1,500 worth of party supplies. If I don't. Well I'll drown my sorrows.

Ok,..Gallstones gets it,..but,..I'll be back,..and btw,..when you're debating with JB,..and he gets off on a tangent,..an hour is not a very long time,..some of his stories, which are more entertaining than many of the knucklehead posts we get here, can take me 20-30 minutes to fully digest!

Oh, and for my commentary, I've said all along that I hope that the Eagles work something out with Lito. I love the draft, and I think we get great field position this year. You add the turnovers that Lito and Asante, along with the bullets from the line, help bring this year and D-Mac should have great opportunity to put together scores. And, Lito is a class guy. He needs this year to prove himself so that he can get the contract he deserves from Philly or elesewhere next year.

Okay, here's my take, since I think I am the next new poster. brizer doesn't get it because of the same reason he said that blakey shouldn't get it. briz's post was just to congratulate blake, then his next post was to complain about it. No offense, I like to read briz and JB's posts, but it took him almost an hour to offer Iggles commentary. So, kgall gets this one. Besides, briz and JB have the most rings, and I'm for someone new getting a ring this year ... if you get my drift. So, kgall has it this time. And, I think there should be a twenty minute rule. After claiming victory, you have 20 minutes to post something meaninful, or you forfeit.

Uh... I liked Devin Thomas but was eventually turned off him by 1 thing... he only had 1 sleeve. That weirded me out. === I played with a guy... Sheldon Jackson a TE from Cali I think. Anyways he would paint his fingernails black. Never trusted him. Although he proved me wrong many times. === But watchin this Jazz/Rockets I notice TMac has 1 sleeve. No wonder he never shows up 4th Q. How can you with half a shirt?
