Opening Remarks: "We made a trade early in the day for Lorenzo Booker, the running back from Miami, via Florida State. He's a one-year player; he was a rookie this past year. He's somebody we really liked in the draft last year and we couldn't pull it off where we were able to get him last year, but he's somebody we've had our eyes on. He does some of the same things that (RB) Brian Westbrook does. You can flex him out and throw him the football. I think that the combination of he and Brian on the field will really be a nice combination for our offense. And then, with the fist pick in the second round we took (DT) Trevor Laws out of Notre Dame. Trevor is a high-energy player. He had the most tackles for a loss in the country this past year. He gives us a nice guy we can work in with the two first-round picks we have starting for us. I think he upgrades that defensive line as he had a tremendous year this year and last year and a great Senior Bowl. Then, with the second pick, we picked up DeSean Jackson who is a wide receiver and returner. He does both punts and kicks and he's an explosive player. He's very fast, very quick and he's one of those guys that, if you talk to people around the league who have evaluated him, they put him in that exciting, explosive category. We did a little bit of trading today. We felt that the middle rounds here, the third, fourth and fifth rounds, were strong rounds and we wanted to make sure that we got enough picks in those rounds that we got enough of those players. I think we've accomplished that today and I'm sure we'll be moving around as we go on."
On whether a player was taken in the first round that the Eagles wanted that caused them to trade down: "Not necessarily. You know what happened, is we got a nice offer. I know a lot was said about (Pittsburgh Tackle Jeff) Otah, and Otah is a fine player. He plays either right or left tackle, and we did like him, but the offer was just too sweet to turn it down."
On how soon in the day the offer from Carolina was made: "When we were on the clock."
On whether the Eagles tried to move up in the first round: "Yeah we tried that too. We tried to move up a little bit. I'm not going to tell you who we tried to move up for, but we tried to move up and that didn't work. Again, we wanted to try and maintain as many picks in these next few rounds as we could."
On whether the first round pick next year is what made the offer so sweet: "That and you add the fourth round pick to it with the other pick and you're sitting there with a pretty good situation. Again, it gives you another pick in the middle rounds."
On whether, at the beginning of the day, the goal was to move up, or down: "When you're sitting there at 19, you have no idea. You hear a lot of people talk and you have no idea who's going to move when it really comes time to move. A little bit higher and you have a tendency to know a little bit earlier what you can do, but right there (at 19) there's a lot of talk and, as we got to the situations, we evaluated them and pulled the trigger where we wanted to."
On whether Trevor Laws is a lot like DT Mike Patterson physically: "He's very similar. Just like Mike, he was a tremendous wrestler in high school and he's got that great balance and core strength and quickness. He'll be a nice addition in there with the pair that we have in (DT Broderick Bunkley) Bunk and Patterson."
On how you compare the different possibilities at picks 19 and 47: "You evaluate what the trade is compared to that player. Once we got to the position where we pick players, you try to pick the best player on the board. Not necessarily the players that people expected us to pick, but players that we felt, through the evaluation process, were the best at that particular time."
On whether the Eagles are done for the day in the draft: (Jokingly) "Unless they're doing something up there right now."
On whether it's doubtful, at this point, that they'll trade CB Lito Sheppard: "I don't know that. Right now, Lito's a Philadelphia Eagle. People have been calling about him, but I don't know what will happen here."
On whether having Lito and two first round picks next year gives the Eagles leverage to get an impact player this year: "I wouldn't say that, necessarily. We'll see how it goes. There's still some people interested, but Lito's a good football player; I'm not just going to give him away. That's not what I'm doing here."
On whether he has spoken to Lito recently: "I have not, no."
On whether this draft has been an unusual one: "I can't tell you that there weren't moves in there that I said 'okay, I see' and where I hadn't seen them before. It comes down to people's preference. I don't think, when you look at the first round in particular, there were a large number of players that you consider these great players that you come into these other drafts with. I think they're solid football players. The whole draft, there's some solid football players the whole way through the draft. That's how we evaluated it."
On whether DeSean Jackson is ready to be the full-time returner: "He's surely good enough, yes. He's pretty special there. Now, I say that, that was at the college level. (Jokingly) I think the balls are the same size at this level as they were at that level."
On whether he can do both punt and kickoff returning: "He can do kickoffs, he can do both, but he was known for his punt returning."
On how Jackson has compensated for his small frame in his career: "He went to one of the all-time great high schools in Long Beach Poly in Long Beach, California. He was recruited by everybody and wound up going to Cal (California). He was a star there, the best player on their team. I know he's up for the challenge now. Buffalo's got a pretty good little receiver that came in up there and was pretty successful for them, so I think this kid has a chance. He's got to come in here and work hard and try to do the same things that he did in the college lever and he'll be okay."
On whether Jackson was drafted as more of a WR or returner: "Wide receiver. I wouldn't do it that high for just return ability. We had him as a low first round caliber player."
On how much better special teams are going to be with Jackson and all the offseason moves: "I want to see how he does. I've sat up here before and mentioned a couple people who I thought would help us on special teams, but I kind of want to see this one before I say anything. Hopefully he helps us out, that's the intention. I can't sit up here and boast at all."
On how it's rare for a team to go two years without a first-round pick: "I think we'll be okay."
On whether he sees that as a trend, players not being worth a first round pick: "No, not at all. I told you, there were a few guys that I would have moved up for, but it didn't work out. This deal that we received was just too good to turn down for the guys that were at that position."
On whether he plans on keeping all 9 picks in day two: "I don't know that. We have a little ammunition there if we want to move up and get somebody. For me to tell you that we'll take all those guys, I don't know that. I think we're in a position, though, that I like in this draft. We'll just see how it works out."
On whether he called the Dolphins about Booker: "Yes. I called Bill (Parcells) and talked to him about it."
On whether Jackson has the ability at WR to step in right away: "If he transfers all this, he has the ability to do both and help us out. As I think Booker and Laws can too, but I want to see it. I want them to come up here and prove themselves a little bit before I say anything."
On whether he plans to hold onto the Carolina pick next year: "I would like to right now. That gives us two number one picks next year and that's a good thing."
