Eagles Release Veteran DE Kearse

Defensive end Jevon Kearse, a prized free agent signing in 2004, was released by the Eagles on Thursday morning, the team said. Kearse recorded 7 ½ sacks in each of his first two seasons with the team after his storied career with Tennessee, and then suffered a knee injury in the second game of the 2006 season. That injury ended his '06 campaign and slowed him during a struggling 2007 year.

A three-time Pro Bowl player, Kearse is now eligible to sign with any team in the NFL.

Kearse was the 16th overall selection of the Titans in 1999 and earned Rookie of the Year honors after setting an NFL rookie record with 14 1/2 sacks. He became the first rookie in league history to lead a conference in quarterback sacks.

His time in Philadelphia was not quite as successful, although Kearse's presence was a key for the Eagles during their Super Bowl run in 2004. He was a solid, durable contributor until suffering a knee injury against the Giants in Week 2 of the 2006 season. To that point, Kearse was off to his best start with the Eagles, recording 3 1/2 sacks.

But he wasn't the same player last year, and Kearse actually lost his starting job to Juqua Thomas midway through the season. Kearse ended the year with 25 total tackles and 3 1/2 sacks in 14 games, which included eight starts.

In 45 regular season games with the Eagles, Kearse had 133 total tackles and 22 sacks.

The Eagles have a clear need at defensive end as free agency begins. They have Pro Bowl right end Trent Cole and Thomas penciled in as the starters, with second-year man Victor Abiamiri pushing for a more expanded role. Former first-round draft pick Jerome McDougle, who has been injury-plagued his entire career, remains on the roster and will give it another go in training camp.

Head coach Andy Reid has made it clear that the Eagles want to improve their pass rush. They will have a chance in free agency and in the draft.

Good posts.... I loved KEARSE and we might well miss him like we did last year when he was injured. He definately wasn't himself and 8mill is too much. They tried to restructure his contract... but no. So it's nothing but the best for KEARSE. He gave it everything he had for 4 Q's every game... and that's all you can ask for.

I am pleased and not surprised that the Eagles released Kearse before the start of free agency. He was a big-name acquisition in 2004, but never lived up to the expectations that he brought with him from Tennessee. The best potential free agents were taken off the market by the franchise tag. Traditionally, free agency has been about money, not winning for players. Also, only elite players change teams and continue to play at an elite level; Reggie White, Deion Sanders, and Terrell Owens to name a few. I am more interested in the draft. The Eagles have a lot of picks and also should get decent compensatory picks for the losses of Stallworth and Garcia, both starters for N.E. and Tampa Bay respectively. It is obvious that the secondary, defensive line, and offensive line need to get deeper and better. I would love to see the skill position players on offense get faster along with a position player that has return skills. Free agency is overrated and the pool of players in it is overpaid. I have a pulse right now, but I'll get more excited as the draft nears. Until then, enjoy a young, competitive Sixers team and hope the Flyers can recover from their slump and make the postseason. JT was a fairly pleasant surprise last year, but he is definitely not young. He'll be 30 this May. Cutting Kearse was a necessary move, but we've got to add another end to compete for that 2nd starting spot.

I like a lot of the comments made by amoses06. I use to love the freak. I thought that he would be a fierce competitor for the Eagles but he hasn't produced much in the past couple of seasons and we need star athletes at DE to make this defense roll. Plus, I am sure that he isn't worth the paycheck if he is sitting on the bench in a reserve role. J. Thomas emerged last year as a clear standout at left DE. I am glad to see a young guy step up and play to the fullest of their potential. There is also tremendous upside if he continues to train and hone his skills and technique. I love Cole on the other side. Nothing more needs to be said about his performance. As far as the back ups, I am surprised that Darren Howard and McDougle are still on the roster. The release of Kearse tells me that the Eagles could very well be looking to improve the DE position. I don't see any real talented DE in Free Agency (that fit this team)but I have seen a tremendous amount of potential drafts. i won't get into that just yet. I respect what the Eagles organization's plans are for this team and instead of asking questions and giving my opinion of what they should do, I sit back and analyze how they anticipate the pieces falling together. I am exciting about Free Agency but more interested in potential trades and the draft because I think the core of the team is intact and now we just want to challenge the roster to make improvements. Personally, i think that we are just a hair away from that championship team that we expect and we have to be very careful and critical in the next few months in order to move forward. Remember, sometimes all it takes is one wrong move, one player cut, miss on one draft pick, and your season could be a wash, or franchise could be set back years. Therefore, I don't think that we need to be overly aggressive in free agency. I think we need to exercise some patience and be very strategic in the moves that we make. Melvin Chicago, IL

I'm not really surprised that we let Jevon Kearse fly away. He is a hell of a pass rusher but he seems to just not have it no more like he used to when he first came to us. Hopefully he can resurect his career with another team. This is a good move because this gives our young DE's a chance to prove that they can actually take the opposing QB down instead of hurrying him to get rid of the ball. I like Juqua Thomas taking over fully next season with Abiamiri getting some playing time. I say we next get rid of Jerome McDougle because he has been injured his entire career with us and how can he be affective being injured. Get rid of him next and lets pick up a excellent pass rushing DE to take McDougle's place so we can have some depth ither in the draft or tommorow in FA. Tommorow will be the day that the eagles will show if they are serious about getting back to the super bowl by upgrading this team. Hated to see Kearse get let go but we have to move on and do what's best for this team to get back to the superbowl. I really like Trent Cole, Juqua Thomas, and Victor Abiamiri for this up coming season. Like I said tommorow will let us know if the eagles are serious about being a contender for superbowl 43.
