Head coach Andy Reid said on Wednesday that linebacker Takeo Spikes will have season-ending surgery on the rotator cuff that he tore Sunday against Dallas.

Reid said that the Eagles are in the process of placing Spikes on the injured reserve list. The surgery is tentatively scheduled for Friday and it will be done by Dr. James Andrews. Reid indicated that even if the Eagles were still in the playoff hunt, they would have made the decision to place Spikes on IR.

Reid will rotate two rookies, Stewart Bradley and Akeem Jordan, into the linebacker rotation. Bradley will work in as the nickel linebacker and Jordan will start on the weak side in the base formations.

Spikes' spot on the 53-man roster will likely be replaced by long-time practice squad member Michael Gasperson, who can play wide receiver and tight end. Gasperson would be an asset at tight end because Matt Schobel (concussion) and L.J. Smith (knee) missed practice Wednesday.

Shawn Andrews (knee), Reggie Brown (knee), Brian Dawkins (back/illness) and Brian Westbrook (knee) also missed Wednesday's practice along with Spikes. Defensive tackle LaJuan Ramsey was limited in practice with a groin injury.

Lastly, quarterback Kevin Kolb will remain the No. 3 quarterback this week against New Orleans.

SAINTS UPDATE: BUSH RETURNS TO PRACTICE

Saints head coach Sean Payton was "optimistic" on Monday that running back Reggie Bush would be able to return to the lineup for this Sunday's game against the Eagles and that optimism is well-founded by the fact that Bush had limited participation in practice on Wednesday.

"He was limited (Wednesday). He moved around some and participated in some of our work," said Payton. "It's still not 100 percent but I am encouraged just by what I saw. He's moving around a lot better there's still some swelling, but it's something that he looked a lot better today and really towards the end of last week. He's starting to feel better so it'll be a day-by-day thing. We'll see where he is tomorrow after today's work and it'll probably be a game-time decision."

Bush has not played since the team's Dec. 2 loss to Tampa Bay because of a torn PCL in his knee. There were a number of reports that indicated that Bush's season was over, but it looks as if he is on track to make his return. Aaron Stecker has started in Bush's absence.

Defensive end Renaldo Wynn missed Wednesday's practice with a toe injury. Tight end Eric Johnson had limited participation with a groin injury.
