Reid Provides McNabb Update

There's no definitive word on who will be the team's quarterback Sunday at New England. For now, it's a wait-and-see situation.

Head coach Andy Reid said that an MRI revealed some swelling in Donovan McNabb's injured ankle. However, the quarterback has a swollen thumb on his throwing hand that is just as much of a concern. The thumb is not broken, the coach added.

"I'm as worried about the thumb as I am about the ankle, maybe a little bit more because that's what he's gripping the football with," Reid said Monday, a full year after his quarterback's 2006 season ended with a torn knee ligament. "Both of them are day-to-day situations."

Reid said McNabb injured his right thumb at some point late in the first quarter and it swelled up later. McNabb exited the game late in the second quarter with the ankle injury, which Reid reiterated is not a high ankle sprain.

"He has some swelling in there," Reid said. "You can kind of pinpoint the tender spots on it and work on those."

McNabb's availability for the Patriots game could be determined by Wednesday,
when the team begins its preparations for the Patriots. Or, Reid said, it could even be a game-time decision.

"
I'm not going to put a date on it like that," Reid said. "I've got to see how he's doing as we go through. We've got two things that we're dealing with. We'll see how it works out."

Reid also did not rule out the possibility of McNabb playing Sunday night without the benefit of practice, much like offensive tackle Jon Runyan did earlier this season and Brian Westbrook did on a few occasions last season.

"I think Donovan's far enough along in his career where you can get away with it, more so than one of the younger guys," Reid said. "Would you like him to be there for the preparation? Absolutely. But if he can't physically, then that's the way we go."

McNabb once finished a game on a broken right ankle, throwing for four touchdowns in a win over Arizona back on Nov. 17, 2002. But Sunday was a different story.

McNabb threw the ball away before he was dragged down from behind by Miami's Michael Lehan. He limped off the field and was taken to the locker-room for X-rays, which were negative. Up to that point, he had completed just 3 of 11 passes for 34 yards and two interceptions.

A.J. Feeley came off the bench and managed the game well, directing a pair of touchdown-producing drives in the second half while completing 13 of 19 passes for 116 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Reid dismissed any hint of a quarterback controversy following Sunday's game. He said a healthy McNabb would be the quarterback Sunday against New England.

"If he can go, then he goes; if not, then A.J. takes his (place). It's fairly simple," Reid said.
