Clearly, the Eagles didn't take too kindly to Matt McCoy's foolish penalty on Sunday afternoon. One day after his personal foul penalty cost the Eagles 15 yards, McCoy was cut on Monday, replaced by Akeem Jordan
on the team's 53-man active roster.
McCoy was penalized 15 yards for an unnecessary roughness penalty early in the third quarter on Sunday against Minnesota when he delivered a late block to Vikings punter Chris Kluwe far away from the play late during a Reno Mahe punt return. He was given a stern talking to on the sideline by safety Brian Dawkins, who was inactive for the game, and then McCoy was cut on Monday afternoon.
Head coach Andy Reid, when asked about the move on Monday afternoon, talked about Jordan more than the reasoning behind the release of McCoy.
"This gives Jordan an opportunity get up with the 53-man roster," said Reid. "Matt did a nice job when he was here. We just thought we would make the switch. I'm sure Matt is going to hook on with somebody else and do a great job for them."
A second-round draft pick in 2005, McCoy started 10 games last season and recorded 81 tackles and had two quarterback sacks. After grading out well in the first portion of the season, McCoy suffered a shoulder injury and was ineffective for the second part of the year. He was eventually replaced by Omar Gaither at the WILL position.
