The Eagles named eight players to their practice squad on Monday: defensive tackle Jeremy Clark, fullback Jason Davis, wide receiver Michael Gasperson, defensive end Marques Murrell, wide receiver Bill Sampy, tight end Lee Vickers, safety Marcus Paschal and linebacker Akeem Jordan.
Davis signed with the Eagles as a rookie free agent out of Illinois in 2005 and after a very promising training camp, he tore his ACL in a preseason contest against Baltimore. Davis worked hard to rehab and challenged incumbent Thomas Tapeh for the starting spot in this year's camp.
Clark was originally signed by the Eagles as a rookie free agent out of Alabama after the 2007 draft. Clark impressed the coaches with his maturity and size and was in the mix for the final spot in the defensive tackle rotation. The 6-foot-3, 309-pound Clark had three tackles and a sack in the preseason before he was part of the team's final roster cutdown.
Wide receiver Michael Gasperson is an experienced member of the practice squad, as he has spent the past two seasons in that role with the Eagles. At 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, Gasperson played at the University of San Diego under then-head coach Jim Harbaugh, brother of Eagles secondary coach John. Gasperson had seven catches for 79 yards in the preseason.
Defensive end Marques Murrell basked in the glory of Appalachian State's monumental upset of No. 5-ranked Michigan over the weekend. A two-time first team All-America performer, Murrell finished his career with 36 sacks and a school-record 18 forced fumbles. Murrell proved to be a proficient pass rusher in the preseason as he had two sacks in the preseason finale against the New York Jets.
Wide receiver Bill Sampy appeared at the start of training camp to be in contention for the No. 5 wide receiver job. However, a quad contusion sidelined him for all of camp and the preseason. Sampy signed with the Eagles as a rookie free agent out of Louisiana-Lafayette last year and spent the 2006 season on the practice squad.
Lee Vickers was a defensive end at North Alabama and was signed by the Steelers following last year's draft to play that position. However, the Eagles had other plans in mind. Once Vickers was released by Pittsburgh, the Eagles saw in Vickers a 6-foot-6, 275-pound tight end. He learned the position on the practice squad last year and caught eight passes for 67 yards and a touchdown in this year's preseason. His touchdown grab was the first-ever thrown by rookie quarterback Kevin Kolb.
Marcus Paschal was part of the team's 53-man roster on Saturday, but he was waived on Sunday when the Eagles claimed safety J.R. Reed off of waivers from the Giants. Paschal, a former teammate of safety Sean Considine at Iowa, had an impressive spring and summer and is a young safety to develop.
Akeem Jordan was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award given to the Division I-AA Defensive Player of the Year last season while at James Madison. He, too, was included on the team's 53-man roster on Saturday, but was bumped when the Eagles claimed linebacker Pago Togafau off of waivers from Arizona.
