AFTERNOON PRACTICE
4:26 PM: Practice is over here for Friday at Lehigh. It was pretty hot for the afternoon session, but wasn't too bad in the morning. The hitting has been great to watch the past three days, just getting more and more intense. The fans in the afternoon turned out well compared to the rest of camp, but were nothing close to the 17,000-some that showed up this morning.
4:16 PM: The punters are practicing pooch punts, kicking from the 50-yard line. Dirk Johnson lands a couple at around the 15, but then a couple others only 20-30 yards downfield. Sav Rocca looks pretty solid on kicks, landing three of four inside the 20, and the one that didn't get there he was under pressure from Gaddis (who may have actually hit his foot). Meanwhile CBS's Gus Johnson showed up at camp. Johnson will be the play-by-play guy for the Eagles Television Network preseason telecasts. I can't say I've seen too many of his games, but if he's half as entertaining as a football announcer as he is doing basketball games, he should be on their number one broadcast team.
4:08 PM: Jerome McDougle posts a sack, then Ramsey gets to the quarterback, then Thomas and then Abiamiri on the next play. In all, six of the last seven plays have been sacks. Since the quarterback doesn't get hit in training camp, especially without pads on, the play just goes on after a sack, and here Kolb completes a nice pass to Collie way after the fact.
3:52 PM: Joselio Hanson grabs an interception on a throw from Kelly Holcomb, and soon after cornerback Nick Graham makes a nice pass deflection on a pass to Baskett. The morning saw some nice plays from the offense, but it's been mostly the guys on the other side of the field now.
3:38 PM: While the linemen duel, everyone else goes up for some 7-on-7 drills. Brown makes a real nice catch on a deep fade off of a Feeley throw that looked to have been too far toward the sideline. The offense doesn't get too much going, as linebackers like Akeem Jordan and Gaither play solid pass defense. A couple minutes later, though, injured tight end L.J. Smith catches a crossing pattern. Smith is wearing the red no contact jersey after sitting out the morning practice, but is running well.
3:34 PM: The defenisve and offensive lines are doing more one-on-ones, though this time there are no fights. The offense has been looking strong, but the defense dominates this afternoon for the couple minutes I was watching. Howard gets around William Thomas in his two attempts, and Juqua Thomas looks real good against his man.
3:19 PM: Jon Dornebos and David Akers were talking to the referees (yes, for some team drills there are refs). The conversation started with a question from Dornebos saying: "If the clock runs out and the ball is downed by the kicking team..." it sounded elaborate so I kept walking. It must have been a pretty good question, because when I walked past again 15 minutes later they were still talking, and a couple other specialists had joined them.
3:07 PM: Donovan McNabb is out playing today and once again for the afternoon practice is passing without a knee brace. He's got his long tights on, which I can't understand because it's pretty hot outside.
2:50 PM: The team is warming up for the afternoon practice, and like yesterday it is in only shells and shorts. Players are doing mostly agility drills to start out. The defensive ends and the tackles are splitting up, with special teams coach Rory Segrest directing the ends and position coach Pete Jenkins working with the tackles. Jenkins advises them to stay wide, probably meaning they are trying to stand their ground and blow up a running play.
MORNING PRACTICE:
10:25 AM: Practice is over. It was a good, physical one. The crowd was the biggest one yet - 17,941 this morning alone - and by far the loudest. The offense looked a little bit better than it has the last couple of days. Overall, the defense has mostly gotten the better of the offense. McNabb's throws also have been much more accurate than they looked recently, something that is a bit reassuring to see.
10:16 AM: Running back Brian Westbrook is playing well today, as he gains about five yards inside here. The first-team offense is for the first time going against the first-team defense, though it is not full contact. Baskett grabs a 20-yard pass from McNabb, who is looking better today. The fans are getting loud, as the South and East stands battle to see who can do the E-A-G-L-E-S, EAGLES! chant loudest. Under the leadership of a fan wearing a cape and a helmet with flapping wings holding a Lombardi trophy, I'd say the South edges it out.
10:08 AM: I don't know what's gotten into guard Max Jean-Gilles, but he's been in two fights in two days. In the one-on-one drill with offensive lineman vs. defensive linemen, Jean-Gilles puts a nice block on tackle LaJuan Ramsey, but it turns ugly as both of them start pelting each other with blows to the head like a hockey fight. And just like at a hockey game, the crowd goes crazy. It looks like Jean-Gilles gets more shots off, but Ramsey tears his helmet off. The team around them is loving it. Once they got back to football, Trent Cole is too much to handle for Winston Justice, as the starting end overpowers the tackle once and then gets off a nasty spin on the second try.
9:50 AM: In an electric play, backup running back Ryan Moats makes two guys miss, spins off of a third, but coughs up the ball 20 yards downfield. Cornerback Nick Graham, who defensive coordinator Jim Johnson applauded for his effort so far in camp yesterday, nails wideout Zac Collie out of bounds. Defensive end Darren Howard is getting some reps with the first unit as expected.
9:42 AM: Mikell just misses a deep interception on a 3rd-and-3. The crowd is fantastic today, chanting E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles! every minute or two, and the East stand erupts with "Dallas sucks!" chants. It seems there was a lone Cowboys fan immersed in them.
9:37 AM: The second-team offense finally gets something going as Buckhalter scampers for a 15-yard gain. Davis gets going down the right side and collides hard with James, who gets the tackle but loses his helmet in the process. James is currently running with the first team, as Lito Sheppard is out with an oblique strain.
9:25 AM: The first-team defense, which didn't seem much better than the second-team 'D' yesterday, starts playing great. Linebacker Jeremiah Trotter catches running back Correll Buckhalter in the backfield, and then puts a nice hit on tight end Brent Celek, though the big guy does hold on. Trot is pumped up after each of these, yelling and getting mobbed by teammates following the run stuff. Tackle Brodrick Bunkley gets a sack, and Feeley is off the field quickly.
9:20 AM: The hitting begins, as the second-team defense forces two incomplete passes against the top offense despite good blocking from the line. McNabb, though, starts picking apart the defense. His arm hasn't looked great so far, but he gets wide receivers Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis nice gains. Brown catches one across the middle and gives a strong forearm to rookie safety C.J. Gaddis, who spent yesterday laying out running backs and wideouts. Curtis leaps for a 30-some-yard grab downfield.
9:01 AM: McNabb is throwing to tight ends and backs that get jammed by a linebacker or safety, and break off for a route. His leg is looking fine on his drop back, though on this pass his throw goes behind his intended target. He come back strong, however, with a nice pass to fullback Jason Davis. Chris Gocong gets off a great jam from tight end Kyle Hunt. As the strongside linebacker, he'll have to do a lot of that. Daniels and safety Marcus Paschal look good as well, but fullback Jeremy Cain makes a strong move on rookie linebacker Stewart Bradley.
8:52 AM: The cornerbacks and safeties come on to guard a couple of receivers. A.J. Feeley throws an out to wide receiver Kevin Curtis that corner WIll James tips, but Curtis catches with one hand. Wideout Hank Baskett makes a sliding catch and the crowd approves. Jason Avant, who has looked sharp so far in camp, takes a lick from Considine, but stays up and gets downfield.
8:44 AM: The defense is working on positioning while most of the offense is doing 6-on-0 drills, with a quarterback, two tight ends, a running back and a wide receiver.
8:28 AM: The big news is that Donovan McNabb's knee brace is back on. On Thursday afternoon, he shed it, but now it's back on. It could, however, be a different brace. It seems to have a little bit more area below the knee. Perhaps, if this is in fact a different one, it is more comfortable.
8:22 AM: The entire defense is practicing interception returns. Strong safety Sean Considine grabs one and jokingly pitches it to Quintin Mikell at the goal line, who dances into the end zone. Mike Patterson drops one, and gets a little flak from his teammates. Now the linebackers are practicing a great drill where one acts as a ball carrier and another linebacker charges and tackles him onto a pad. Tank Daniels puts a nice hit on Omar Gaither, who gives him due credit for it.
8:14 AM: The players are just warming up, as the offensive line works on engaging the defensive linemen, while tight ends practice cutting hard and catching a pass.
