Lurie on Walsh ...
"Bill Walsh embodied everything that so many of us love about the game of football - his intellect, his aggressive and brilliant game strategies, quarterback development, risk taking, and franchise-building ideas. And the way he coolly executed them is deservedly legendary. His passion for the game was contagious. All of us who had the fortune to spend significant time with Bill and sought his willing guidance will surely cherish every moment spent with this very special man."
Welcome back ...
For the 12th consecutive season, Philadelphia Eagles veterans arrived on the grounds of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. "I told the players before they left to make sure they come back ready to go," said head coach Andy Reid. "It's going to be a tough two weeks up here. They understand that and that's what they want and it will pay off for them once the season starts." That statement has proven correct, as six of the previous seven seasons which began at Lehigh resulted in playoff berths, including a Super Bowl appearance in 2004.
Going camping …not as it used to be ...
Running back Brian Westbrook and free safety Brian Dawkins each arrived on the campus of Lehigh University in style this afternoon with their own personal hyperbaric oxygen chambers. Purchased in 2006, Westbrook decided to bring his along to help aid in recovery following the long, hot, strenuous practices. He plans on spending one hour each day inside the chamber. When asked if he'd be willing to share it with teammates, Westbrook jokingly responded, "I have no problem; they've just got to be on the offensive side of the ball."
Sampy scampering up the radar screen ...
Originally an undrafted free agent out of Louisiana Lafayette, WR Bill Sampy spent the entire 2006 campaign as a member of the Eagles practice squad. Following an impressive showing at both offseason minicamps and now here at training camp, Sampy is certainly living up to his own expectations. He's also turning quite a few heads along the way. "He's already made an impression," said offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg when asked about Sampy's performance. "I think he's got a chance to compete to make this ball club. There's no question about that."
Not only has Sampy been impressive catching the ball, but he's also done very well on special teams in the return game. "First, where many players make the football team is with their special teams play," said Mornhinweg following today's practice. Sampy knows this, and is doing all he can to make the team. "My biggest asset is my speed, as well as catching the ball." Time will tell if Sampy can catch on to an active roster spot.
