McNabb Addresses Draft, More

Donovan McNabb spoke with 610-WIP radio personality Howard Eskin in an exclusive interview Tuesday during which they discussed a variety of topics, including reaction to the Eagles' selection of quarterback Kevin Kolb with their first pick in this year's draft, as well as the progress of his recovery from a torn ACL.

Here's a transcript of some of what McNabb had to say:

The fact that we haven't heard from you since the draft, everybody's wondering, how have you accepted this?

"I've accepted it just the way it's supposed to be accepted. People want to talk about the situation at hand, and the situation at hand pretty much is what it is ... we drafted a quarterback with the first pick. I didn't draft him. It was shocking first and foremost, but again my job is to focus in on my rehab and lead this team to a Super Bowl."

When did you find out that the Eagles took a quarterback in the second round?

"When I was talking to my brother-in-law in the ice cream shop, who was talking to my wife at the time, and she said that we took a quarterback. My reaction was just like everybody else's, 'Wow on our first pick? Yeah, well okay that's something.' And then you just keep getting ice cream and ordering sprinkles for your daughter."

You had to be more than just surprised. It's more than just, 'wow, they took a quarterback,' isn't it?

"Well, I think in the situation that we're all in, playing this sport, when you draft somebody at the position you're in, and at the quarterback position there's only one particular player that plays at that time. Of course you ask questions, 'Well, what does that mean?' and 'Where is this going?' But I think the most important thing for me is just make sure that I'm healthy at 100 percent and get back out there to compete, and just try to do the right things out on the field.

"I didn't focus to say 'why, he's going to take my job,' or anything. From what I understand, he's a great person, he's a great player. But again, if I'm healthy, it's my job."

When that happened, was your first inclination to pick up your cell phone and either call or text your head coach?

"No. My phone was buzzing so much while I'm there getting sprinkles for my daughter's ice cream. I'm text messaging people, and I'm getting text-messaged from teammates, and friends from other teams, and family, trying to find out the answer, and the reaction I had on the text message was 'Wow, I didn't know, that's just something to me too.'

"And as I'm texting all these people I get a voicemail from Andy (Reid) that said it means nothing to you, you're our guy, don't worry about what everybody's saying and everything else that's going to be said on TV. There was no 'call me back, give me your response' or nothing like that.

"He felt the need to reach out to me and let me know after the pick that there was nothing more into it, it was just the best available athlete."

There will be a lot of questions about Kevin Kolb. Do you know what to expect?

"My focus is just to get myself back ready to go and be healthy and 100 percent to do what I did last year. But to be more consistent, winning games that we are supposed to win. So I don't worry about when he comes in and what he's going to do. I'm sure he's going to do great, and I look forward to working with him this weekend, just talk to him and get to know him as a person and just try to motivate him while he's on the field."

Have you talked to him yet?

"No, I haven't. I look forward to meeting him this weekend."

Have you given any thought to the notion that 'I'm closer to the end of my career than the beginning of my career'?

"To be honest with you, I don't think I'm close to the end of my career. People say when you hit 30, all of a sudden it all starts to go downhill. Actually, it gets better after that, I feel. It's been unfortunate that I've been hurt the last two years, but quarterbacks and players get hurt in the NFL. Things happen. But you bounce back strong, get back on the horse and do your job. Guys have played until they're 42, 43 years old, so that's really not an issue to focus on.

"With this situation that's at hand, it is what it is. We drafted a quarterback. Kevin Kolb was somebody that they've enjoyed, and they were really interested in, and they drafted him. There was nothing I could do. I wasn't in the War Room, I didn't send the card to (NFL Commissioner) Roger Goodell, I didn't get into all of that. I'm just working on my rehab right now."

Is this the first time in your football life that you've ever had somebody that you think is going to replace you someday?

"No. I don't think about that at all. Anytime you get caught up in that then you get limited in the things that you're capable of doing because you're so focused on the way people are responding to what's going on, or you're looking back to see how he's doing, or whether they're going to pull the trigger on you.

"You just focus on your job, and if something happens it happens, you just move on."

Isn't there a point where you wonder how many more years you're going to be here? Did any of that creep into your mind

"Not at all. It happens to everybody. When the draft comes about, they draft players at each position. When they draft somebody at corner or a guy at safety, everybody says 'Well, he's going to replace so and so.' Well, for a lot of people like that I know, those guys have been in those same positions, and the draft picks just kind of rotate in there, and all of a sudden they make a decision after that.

"I've been a part of this team when things like that have happened. I've seen when we drafted Sheldon (Brown), Mike (Lewis) and Lito (Sheppard), and what happened with Bobby (Taylor) and what happened with Troy (Vincent). I've seen what happened when we had Duce (Staley) and we drafted (Brian) Westbrook. It's going to happen sometime. If it happens sooner or it happens later, that's what happens in the game of football."

On your long-term future with the team?

"I'm a Philadelphia quarterback, and I've been for the last eight years, and I look forward to being the Philadelphia quarterback for eight-to-10 more years."

When are you going to get tired of answering questions about Kevin Kolb and his progress?

"It's a situation that people are going to want to know about, they want to know about our friendship, they're going to try to dig deep, that's what everybody does, they try to get a reaction. And I'm here to tell you right now, I think Kevin Kolb is going to do an excellent job for us. I'm going to help as much as I can in his preparation, and when the time comes, at least I can say I helped him and he's ready to go.

"But I can't worry about that right now, I can only worry about what's at hand, and for me it's just to come back healthy, strong and ready to make something happen."

Will you start the first preseason game?

"I don't know. I look forward to being in either the second or third one, but I don't know for the first one. I just don't know."

Had you ever heard of Kevin Kolb?

"I have. I know that they liked him. Well, obviously we did. They went down to see him at his workout, and they were interested in him. They were interested in a lot of people; but we drafted Kevin."

What will your role be in this weekend's mini-camp?

"I won't be doing anything in this camp ... I'll be coaching."
