Thrill Of Eagles Training Camp Is Here

I could sit here and write all night about what Friday afternoon was like on the perfect fields of Lehigh University under a gorgeous blue sky and a warm sun as the Eagles came out for a full-team practice and the depth chart looked as I expected it to look and Kevin Kolb threw two of the prettiest deep passes I have ever seen and .... on and on and on ...

But I won't. I'll turn my attention toward the weekend ahead, when the pads go on and we get our first real feel for this football team.

I will, of course, overreact each day, and somebody from the Eagles' personnel department or the coaching staff or a fan will pull me aside and say, "Yo, Spuds. Long way to go here. Calm down."

And I'll grin and tell them they are right and then I'll go right back to hyperbole. Controlled hyperbole, of course. I'm a veteran of these camps, but each year the first weekend comes along and the excitement level is off the charts.

How can you not feel that way about this team? The Eagles have turned over the roster in the last couple of years and looking out on the field and seeing all of those young studs on offense, the changing names on the line, the new faces on defense and so many kids coming off the sidelines it really hits you: This is a new generation of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Now, what I didn't feel on Friday was the "Where is Donovan McNabb?" question. He is gone. Not forgotten, never forgotten, but he is gone. This is Kolb's show now, ladies and gentlemen, and everything is different. Kolb is a different person, a different quarterback and a new kind of leader for this football team.

The defense will command my attention for much of this weekend. I have watched every snap of the practices and the offense has all the weapons. DeSean Jackson, by the way, is so much better than he was last year that it's scary. He is stronger. His feet are quicker. He has clearly been working hard on his game. The young man is going to be hard to stop. Jeremy Maclin is playing so much faster, LeSean McCoy is in great shape and Brent Celek could catch 90 passes this season.

But the defense ... I'd love to tell you about the defense. I don't know, though. Nobody does. They haven't tackled since January and, well, that game against Dallas didn't go very well for anybody.

So, I'll sleep on it tonight. Not too well, I'm sure. I'll be up early, to the field first thing. I want to hear the fans react when the Eagles walk onto the field. I want to hear the cracking of shoulder pads colliding. I want to see some scraps and some struggles and some players lay it all on the line because they know that if they don't, they won't be here very long.

I want to see this new generation of Eagles. I want to see this team every team grow into something special, something Super. It really starts for me over the course of the next few days when the whistle blows and the defense can hit and, well, we see some real football played.

Welcome, then, to the 2010 season. Welcome to training camp, Eagles style.

Aaargh, Eagles Nation sleeps well tonight, and I can't get to sleep! I'm wired, need an Ambien, I guess I'll just have to bore myself to sleep...I'm grateful to my wife, whose amazing recovery from bone cancer has allowed me this tri-state mini-tour of NFL camps... I miss her inspiration, but I don't miss her nagging!...if she reads this, I am cooked...Anyway, off to Redskins Park in the a.m., and since the 'Skins have denied my press access, I have a plan: My good buddy Pete, who is a UPS driver that delivers to my day job, has donated me a UPS shirt and a pair of UPS shorts...So, if I wear the uniform and carry a clipboard, I should be golden gettting into the press tent...I must interview McNabb! I am truly out!

Final thoughts today: these rookie free agents are admirable for their courage and persistence in spite of all odds..eg., Rodelin Anthony is 23 years old, has a kid, and started only 2 games as a senior at UNLV... Albert McClellan was redshirted for the entire 2007 season after suffering a knee injury...These guys know adversity. Somebody thought enough of their talent to give 'em a long shot...Gotta feel good about the NFL and the USA for giving these kids a shot. At least they can tell their grandkids one day: "I was a Raven in 2010"...

Mr. Wood))) you know what's really cool about these young guys? They're so smart, they know they are long-shot underdogs...and so accepting of it!...they basically know they're getting cut, but they're just happy to be on an NFL campus...and their personal lottery is, they'll make the PS! That's the caste system of the NFL. It ain't all Sam Bradford and buttons on moonwings... whatever the hell that means! (Gin stashed in flask, mixed discreetly with Diet Pepsi...yowsa! These guys can't drink anything during TC...but Slurpy can!)

>Brizer: hey, with Westbrook-we can catalog his physical issues: ankles, knees & concussions. With JJ Arrington: he had 'microfracture surgery' which means what exactly. His knees needed to be repaired and this type of surgery has been successful for various athletes and success is not guaranteed. Good news is that he took a year off to let knees stabilize. ( Abiamiri??). Bad news is that he may be all done anyway

Hey, remember, Rodelin and Albert, this is all in fun, like you said...I never promised you guys a rose garden...Philly fans probably asleep or watching Phitens replays right now...(These guys think everyone at PE.com is just sitting there with baited breath!)... Unlike Rodelin's homewtown of Immokale, FL (did I spell that right, Rod?), or Albert's hometown of Lakeland, FL.....hmmm, I think I'm getting the Florida connection of these two!

Mr. Woodcock,..perk up..for 2 reasons..1),..you can't think of a player besides OJ?...you did,..Cedric Benson...2) #36..has more physical issues than JJ besides being much older (as a RB)...therefore,..yur 12:04 post was senseless.

Hehe, sidenote: both Rodelin and Albert be dumpin' on Terence "Cheeseburger" Cody tonight...bustin' on the dude, sayin' he only palyed 2 years of HS ball...now, what's unusual about that, according to Albert, is it was Cody's freshman and senior years! Now, if it was junior and senior, who cares? But I gotta admit, the freshman and senior combo is unique...

Kenny,..comparing Booker to a leading Heisman candidate sounds incongruant and a rather weak argument. However, in my posts I covered all bases,.as did the IGs. JJ may very well have little to offer. The KO return is intriguing. I never enjoy betting against a player being able to play.

What are the parameters of this deal, do we get a conditional pick if he doesn't make the cut or we have to pick now. I knew Reid had to replace that 6th rd pick he lost for Chaney. I don't see JJ on our final 53, will be hard to learn the play book

XTRA! XTRA! ok, I'm in the Best Western computer room at Westminster, MD, tonight...I did not expect this or want this...I have a life... Defense and Offense meetings are over, these guys should be in bed right now, but I am being hounded by a few late-night TV/Internet junkies who are tryin' to make the cut with the Ravens...right here with me are Rookie Free Agents Rodelin Anthony, 6-5, 230 WR from UNLV...and Albert McClellan, 6-2, 254, DE from Marshall. Both have (shut up, Rodelin!) zero chances to make the team, except possibly PS.... They want to know, what up with the Eagles vacuum at Center and OL?...that's what they askin', and if I get no feedback from you'se, I could end up thrown naked in the swim pool here... HELP!!!

>> Jerked: Bringing back JJ Arrington makes as much 'sense' as bringing back Brian Westbrook. If he is healthy: he is better than Bell, McCoy,Buckley and Mallett ...Scott has a different mission. Don't think he slipped through Denver's hands for Joe Mays.

Bri, even your boy Booker had brilliant college highlights. My thing is that he hasn't done much in this league. Sadly, one of his more memorable plays is the flea flicker against us in the NFC CG. He is behind the 8th ball, only thing is that we didn't give up much for him

12:01 am ET
>>Brizer: JJ Arrington WAS all that as a college player--certainly out-performed Cedric Benson and Adrian Peterson which is no small accomplishment. However, if Denver is willing to take JOE MAYS for JJ...his 'tank' is probably empty. Besides Ottis Anderson coming back to life for Bill Parcells after being dumped by St. Louis, I am having a hard time recalling a career at RB that came back from the dead.

So what Rb gets the axe soon, Buckley, Mallet or Scott? Do they all get to practice for the weekend? Was Arrington brought in to return Kicks? I know that this isn't a big deal or anything, but it is kind of interesting. I recollect JJ returning kicks really well a couple years ago. Tomorrow is going to be awesome and it can't get here fast enough. Praying for no injury's

>>kene: on the PLUS SIDE, Eagles appear to want to improve the rushing game. If Arrington has anything left in his sore knees to give--and it benefits the Eagles--I am all for an improved rushing game.

After thinking about the trade, we probably didn't lose anything. Remains to be seen if we won per say, but in all my mocks, I have had Mays as cut, so another way to look at it is that we let a guy who wouldn't make it go and will try see if JJ Arri can give us anything. On the surface I don't expect him to make the team
