Can A Rookie Lead Defense From Safety Spot?

First impressions are generally forgotten in a matter of days at training camp, but sometimes they carry a player a long way. Sometimes the way a player handles the media, or handles a situation, or the way he relates to his teammates helps identify him as a prospect. Nate Allen, all smiles and a bundle of humble confidence as he reported to training camp on Wednesday, projects something special.

It isn't the way he answers questions, although he is well spoken and clearly very intelligent. It isn't the smile, which provides a sense of self-assuredness that has to help in his line of work. Allen has poise and maturity and clearly understands that he has a great "opportunity" in front of him as the Eagles' starting free safety.

And that's all is it, at this point anyway. It is an "opportunity." Allen isn't being handed anything. Oh, he is running as a starter in these scaled-down practices and he is learning on every snap and, honestly, Allen looked great on Wednesday, but the real tests begin on Friday afternoon in a 10-10-10 practice when the tempo increases as the veterans arrive. Third-year man Quintin Demps will be on hand then, still miffed at not taking advantage of his "opportunity" last year to win the starting free safety job and determined to take his game up a level and become the starter there in 2010.

Maybe that happens. Maybe Demps regains the momentum he had as a rookie. It would be great for the team and for Demps to see him blossom. But as it stands now, Allen is earmarked for the free safety position. What he does with it moving forward has to do with how Allen handles it, how the coaches bring him along and how, well, how it all works together.

It is a pretty massive project, installing a rookie into the starting free safety spot.

"I don't see it that way," said defensive coordinator Sean McDermott. "I am a big believer in adapting to the hand that you are dealt and I think that Nate is up to the challenge, I really do. We'll see. He has to earn the spot. He has to earn the trust of the coaches and his fellow teammates and he is willing to do that."

To understand how remarkable it is, from the perspective of the history of this franchise, consider this: The Eagles started Macho Harris at free safety last year in the opener at Carolina, the first time since Wes Hopkins did so in 1983 that a rookie started there. Now, potentially, the Eagles are looking at starting rookies at the position in consecutive seasons.

And, as we all know, free safety is a thinking-man's position. The free safety helps make the checks and the calls and has to be vocal and decisive. Oh, and he has to tackle well, cover sideline to sideline and make virtually no mental mistakes.

"It is a challenging position to come in right away and contribute the way we're looking for Nate to this year, just because of the mental capacity that's involved in the position, similar to linebacker. There are other positions that are maybe easier to make that transition from college," said McDermott. "I think Nate is more than capable."

McDermott cut his coaching teeth in the Eagles' secondary working with Brian Dawkins, a future Hall of Fame safety, and Michael Lewis, who was selected to one Pro Bowl. He now has a rookie to make and mold.

How much of a difference is there coaching a player headed for Canton, Ohio and coaching a player whose head is going to be swimming with the volume of information he has to absorb in such a short time?

"When you are laying the foundation that we are laying for Nate and that he wants to lay for himself, we need to make sure that we are teaching it the right way and that he is learning it thoroughly so that he can go from step one to step two without missing anything," said McDermott. "You treat them the same, but you coach them differently. I've learned that over the years.

"We're going to work with Nate, just like we are working with all of these players."

And they are moving, fearlessly, into the present with a rookie leading the way from the back of the defense. It doesn't happen often, but all of a sudden it could happen two seasons in succession and that is something worth noting from an historical perspective here.

Mr. Wood, they cut Safety Brett Johnson to give Antoine Harris a shot at Safety...he is coming off some injury issues (IR for groin, leg, other) so he's a long shot...played like 25 games for the Falcons last few years...25 tackles, zero INT...so don't expect too much. Backup is his only shot. Was originalkly signed by Titans 5 years ago, but languished on PS there for 2 years...

>>Kene: He was a very late draft choice or walk-on a few years ago by Titans. Most recently played SAFETY for Atlanta Falcons. Go figure...Dick Jauron isn't thrilled by what McD has given him?

>>ATV: Back to reading the tea leaves..I just figured Antoine Harris would be KO'd fit Brandon Graham on the roster. BUT, even having Antoine Harris in Lehigh begs the question--WHY ANOTHER SAFETY? All Spuds has done in last 48 hours is extol the wonderful safety depth = Coleman and Allen (& Demps).

From my perspective Atv,when everything is all tooken care of I'll bet u theres no-way AR moved up to 13 just to let him ride pine...day late,2 days late or whatever the case may be might I add BG is not that type of guy who will sit down,...hints why we moved up to 13.U can bet on his bottom dollar he wont let that happen. As for AR & this case I'd say its alil different being because of the circumstance.AR might have his ploys but this is one he can call it what he wants & yet I bet u the minute BG sign's all is well.

Hall signed by the Giants... should make Sonbutts happy considering his lament over the eagles LB's... and the one who couldn't make our 80 man roster is signed by the gmen... can't make this stuff up!!!

Swoop... I realize it's not my money I'm telling him to not fight for, and he should no doubt... but if it comes at the expense of his getting playing time this year, it might not be worth it at the end of the day... I've seen too many guys hold out and their rookie years are complete wastes... not saying he can't be good anyway, but it sure does seem like AR does not look fondly on the guys who hold out. Maclin to me was the exception (but only because of an injury and the only guy in front of him was the mope Reggie Brown)... on the bright side, more 1st rounders are getting signed and if he's here by the end of the weekend it shouldn't hurt him too much.

Atv, Sadly ur right about these players & wanting more before contract is up but,I will say not everyone & specially ones who handle there buisness the right way & what they think there worth right out the gate. Sheldon Brown is a great example of that.Didnt think about that when so willing to sign. Yes 1.5M could be the reason holding back but, that also could be his 1.5M that he buys his mother the dream home she's allways wanted & that doesnt even come from his other Millz. Again I hear whatchya' saying but,it is a buisness & most times its better to get it right the 1st time.Even if that takes alil longer.

Yo... while I agree the agent is partially to blame... you have to remember. The agent works FOR Graham... not the other way around. He does not have to listen to his advice, and could take the bull by the horns and say screw the difference, get it done!!!

Swoopy... it's not that I don't get it, but if he's a stud then he is gonna complain about this rookie deal (the same one he held out for), and say he's outplayed the contract and wants a new one before this one ends and threaten ANOTHER holdout. It's just silly to me... he's still gonna be getting 18 million (in the scenario I described below)... the quicker he starts and dominates, the quicker he can complain about his deal and get a new one! lol

I'm an Abbott and Costello fan. Loved the takes on the Vampire, Frankenstien, and Werewolf starring the actual characters that played them....Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, and that other guy. Anyway, not much football content there although Lou worked as a stuntman early in career. As far as Graham goes, he'll sign when he signs. The agent is tying this up, not him per se'

Atv, Im just saying as a player they want all they can get & to say missing some camp could cost him $$$ in the long run could be true but, what "IF" this player in the next 2 still becomes the stud @ there position..? Then nothing is lost & as a stud they will think across those lines anyways. Lets face it,..they all allready feel there studs...got to feel like there on top of the world. How many get picked in the 1st rnd.-----› 32! "out of the whole country"....Yeah! They dont want 3/4 of the pie....right from jump street they want the whole freaking pie.As a fan I understand what it is ur saying.

Oh, and Abbott and Costello filmed the routine first back in '44. The Three Stooges didn't film thiers until '52. Useless trivia. Now ask me about Nuclear Forensic Science!

Swoop... another way to look at it. Let's say for argument sake the gauranteed $ for Grahams slot in 09 was 15 mil (just using round #'s to make it easier)... so, if the birdz are offering that 15 mil with a 20% increase and Grahams agent wants 30%, the difference is 1.5 million. Granted that is ALOT of money to us, but in the NFL it really isn't. Now, consider if Graham holds out over that 1.5 mil... sits all year, and doesn't get a real chance till next year (alla Bunkley?)... His next deal will definitely be affected by that lack of production in his rookie year... and IMO by much more than 1.5 mil. Doesn't make sense to hold out over that amount of $$$

ATV)) Neither...comic Joey Faye claimed authorship of "Slowly I Turned" in its many formats. However, other sources credit Harry Steppe or Samuel Goldman as originator.

5:06 pm ET
Swoopy... you missed what I was saying. What difference are we talking about here? Gramah's going to get 15-20 mil gauranteed, whatever the slot last year recieved plus 20-40% increase... If they were saying you got 0, then ok hold out. But that isn't the case, and the minimal difference between what he's going to get and the little more he wants could easily be made up by becoming a starter and a stud. He has ZERO chance of that happening this year if he holds out... which will cost him $$$$$ down the line. That $$$ it costs him down the line, is going to be much more than he can make by holding out in a rookie deal where the money is already slotted.

Atv, Listen to what ur saying...in 2-3 years "IF" he's a stud...that sir is a big "IF",...so on the flip side of that what "IF" he isnt,...then what..? Bye Bye $$$$$$...this is also one of the main reasons why owners are having a fit.Paying for goods OR atleast thought they were goods & end up being Russells who amount to "nothing" but waisted time,...& ifcorse lots & lots of waisted $$$$$$! Point being for these players is "get it now" for tomorrow garuntee's nothing. To say he'll be a stud &'ll get that $ anyways is obserd & if my aggent said that I'd get a new one.
