First Step In A Long, Long Road For Rookies
By the end of the second of 36 practices at training camp, Martell Mallett and Charles Scott walked off the field at Lehigh University and had to lift their dragging tongues off the green grass here. They were gassed. Exhausted. Repped out. In a span of about three hours of football, Mallett and Scott ran about 150 plays -- maybe more including the individual work -- and battled the physical and mental exhaustion that is only going to intensify moving forward.
"It's tough, but this is part of it," said Scott. "We have only two backs here, so we have to fight through it until the calvalry comes. I want to get as many reps as I can. I get tired, but I know that when the vets get here, my reps go down. I need to learn as much as I possibly can and keep pushing through it.
"But man, yeah, it's tough out there. It's altogether tough. You can't think about being tired. You are here to get your assignment and carry it out and take it play by play."
With 34 players on the practice field and a script that includes individual work, seven-on-seven drills and 11-on-11 snaps, there isn't enough time to recover. And while these players are in excellent shape and have prepared as best as they know, the truth is they really don't know what to expect in their first camps.
It's only going to become more difficult, rest assured. Once the pads go on, the weight of the world increases -- literally. Players are lugging around extra cargo, and the combination of the incredible tempo of practice, the physical nature of the action, the volume of information the players are being given and the fact that rookies have never been through such a demanding schedule conspires to beat down a player.
"You get all the reps now and that's a good thing," said linebacker Jamar Chaney. "We're all tired out here. But I'm here to win a job. Everything else takes a backseat. It is my purpose here to win a job.
"We have a lot to learn, a long way to go. This is just the beginning so you have to go out there and give it 100 percent every day, and at the same time you have to pace yourself and be ready to get after the next practice."
For a player like Kurt Coleman, training camp is another world entirely. He missed much of the spring OTAs and has since worked overtime to make up for that time. Coleman has some relief safety with Ryan Hamilton and Brett Johnson here, and every 60 seconds of deep breathing equals a better next repetition.
"They want us to go about all of business like a veteran would, which is to get into our film work, take the time to study the plays and critiquing yourself to make yourself a better player," said Coleman. "They have a lot of expectations for us rookies. The more time we spend out here developing a bond, the better we will be."
Coleman made the most of his chances while Nate Allen remained out on Tuesday until Allen agreed to terms on a four-year contract. All of those reps Coleman missed in the spring are ones he is picking up now, and he understands the benefit.
"Of course you'd like to see him here getting his reps, but he isn't here and that means extra reps for me," said Coleman. "There were times I was winded, but the more reps the merrier for me."
The critical time for the young players is when there is no practice. They need to know how to take care of their bodies and not wear out their legs. When the practices are over and the meetings are done, the rookies chill out.
Completely.
Or else.
"I stay off my feet. I get into the cold tub. I relax as much as I can and study or just calm down my mind," said Scott. "Today was a tough day. It was hot and the tempo was really fast, but that's why we are here. We're here to win jobs. To do that, you have to go out and be prepared every play. You don't look at the next play. You take care of your business on that play and then go from there to the next snap."

atv...my take on og is in line with what i see going on with this team...out with old and in with the new...i think parker gets the ax too...
|
Mr.Norfleet 07/28/10 7:49 pm ET |
really moving on...new thread...
|
atvcar@... 07/28/10 7:48 pm ET |
Norfleet... no question I was right...technically or any other way. Happy to move on... and agreed with your take on OG if you noticed.
|
Mr.Norfleet 07/28/10 7:44 pm ET |
not again....look, @atv technically you are right (are you happy ?)...realistically it doesnt matter because hall was not important in the big picture of the trade...there you have it...moving on....
|
atvcar@... 07/28/10 7:38 pm ET |
JB... that makes no sense. lol You know Clayton is a player cause Hall got cut? So, Clayton is now 100% making this team? You crack me up... nice fortune telling. Maybe just maybe it's got nothing to do with the new guys, and Hall wasn't the player the FO thought he was when they traded for him... maybe they made a mistake? Maybe they got the wool pulled over their eyes? Nah... never happens to the gold standard... never!

rbi double in brown's 1st at bat..
|
JeromeBrown99 07/28/10 7:35 pm ET |
Nuuuuuuuuuuuudler))) Can't say now... but I would say Clayton is the better player. Plus Reid has already said Clatyon covers the TE "as good as anyone".
|
atvcar@... 07/28/10 7:34 pm ET |
Noodles... how can you say you know any of what is purely conjecture on your part... why would need Hall in case we didn't get Sims... they don't even play the same position genius. Wow... now you know what Mangini thinks? All I know is Howie said they "Insisted" we get Hall... doesn't sound like baggage add on to me. You on the other hand...
|
JeromeBrown99 07/28/10 7:33 pm ET |
atv))) Yes! Cutting Hall makes the deal look even better because now we know Clayton is a player. At least he's better than Hall. So the answer is... Yes!
|
atvcar@... 07/28/10 7:31 pm ET |
Noodles... even a child can follow directions though. Neither wasn't an option was it? Yes or No... is that simple enough for you? If give ONLY those two choices, what would you say then genius?
|
Nuuuudlz 07/28/10 7:29 pm ET |
atv: we did answer the question. You just . . . dont understand the answer. So, I will break it down for you, the way I would break it down to a child. A very simple child. You want to know whether letting go of Alex Hall makes the trade look better or worse. The answer to your question is . . . neither. Because Alex Hall wasnt central to the trade for the Eagles. He was an add on. He was the reason that the Browns agreed to the trade. The Eagles took him because they needed insurance at linebacker in case they came up short in the draft/sims deal. The Browns didnt want him around, so they tacked him on to the trade as baggage. Mangini thinks he got the better end of the deal. The Eagles think that, with the drafted backers and Sims, they are better for the deal. Either way . . . Hall wasnt gonna be on either team, if both teams got what they wanted. Addition by subtraction. Is this still too complicated for you?

Interesting question there, Nuuudler. I suppose TC will sort that out. They are both pretty fast, Chaney has a more ideal size but the knock on him is that he can`t get off blocks. Clayton on the other hand is rather slight. I don`t know how long Sims is here for, but he could be a long term solution there. He may be able to cover TEs, but will he be able to shed them in the running game? TC and preseason will answer a lot

Mr.Norfleet 07/28/10 7:26 pm ET |
nobody has really done more than the next yet...saturday the games begin...tackling will be a major factor in this thing...i would say cheney being a 7th round pick is more impressive...clayton is just my sleeper...they are working him at sam because he has the best chance to get on the field with fokou being our only sam...time will tell...
|
atvcar@... 07/28/10 7:25 pm ET |
Norfleet... I agree, 96 is the best overall b/u option across the board at LB right now. I just don't know if he makes it or not... I guess it will depend on the rookies play in TC. If some else shows they can play multiple spots, OG will probably be Ogone. Time and injuries will decide this one, and may be one of the last cuts.
|
atvcar@... 07/28/10 7:22 pm ET |
JB... who said we suked cause we cut Hall??? Who are you agreeing with? The conversation you’re having in your own mind? But isn’t odd there STILL is no answer to the question from anyone… does cutting Hall make the deal look better in your opinion? Yes or friggin No? Why can’t any of you answer such a simple question?

Nuuuudlz 07/28/10 7:21 pm ET |
Raul walks in the 1st inning. And tripledope wanted to trade him. Mercy.
|
Mr.Norfleet 07/28/10 7:20 pm ET |
i hope mays beats out og but he is going to have to show that he is not a liability as a back up along with his s/t prowess...he just looked so bad on d last year...the 1 common theme about all of the new lb's speed and coverage ability and coverage is where mays looked lost last yr...og is just a trusty ol vet who can start at any position and be adequate...and the way our lb's went down last yr i think we need somebody with an nfl resume to step in and start if need be..

kenny/JB/orange: so we remain divided over O.G. . . . and for good reason. We'll revisit that issue later. Now . . . Clayton vs. Cheney? What has Clayton done to distinguish himself over Cheney? Leave draft status out for a moment.
|
JeromeBrown99 07/28/10 7:07 pm ET |
Simply can't count on Gaither to play 16 games imo. But the docs would have to answer that question for sure.

kenemeka@... 07/28/10 7:06 pm ET |
Nuudler, per OG, several weeks ago, I expressed concern about his injury...Lis Franc fracture(similar to what basically ended Chad Lewis career). If he however can recover, then he may be the best B/U plan at MIKE. I like Chaney a lot which is why I have AR IRing him

orange.todd@... 07/28/10 7:03 pm ET |
Nuuuudlz...O.G. has been a relatively successful guy at this level. I love him as a backup. He also brings a level of versatility to the backup he can play almost every LB position.
|
Nuuuudlz 07/28/10 7:00 pm ET |
kenny: Owens looks prettu damned good. Good enough to challenge Laws, even. The future is coming on strong . . .
|
orange.todd@... 07/28/10 6:58 pm ET |
kenemeka...that seems to be what most people think the roster will shape out to look like...I think it's just a matter of whether we'll keep 6 or 7 guys. If we keep 7 I give the nod to Cheney b.c. he's a big extremely fast guy. He could be a special teams stud and possib;y back up multiple positions.
|
Nuuuudlz 07/28/10 6:57 pm ET |
O.G. over Cheney? Why? O.G. is injury prone, and only as big as the backers he plays with. He looked good between Spikes and Gocong . . . because of all that size around him. He is not better than Cheney. Bank on it.
