Welcome To The 2010 Eagles Season!

Everyone is back at ground zero and zero. The agony of the last month is over, and instead of looking back, we all, and I mean everybody in the NFL, now looks ahead on even ground. And, yeah, I'm dreaming of having Eagles Live! during Super Bowl week next year right in the center of Cowboys Stadium and the idea of the Eagles winning the Super Bowl there is, indeed, the goal of a lifetime.

But I digress ...

There is a lot of work to be done. The Eagles have been on top of things since the 2009 season ended, and have bolstered the coaching staff, have overhauled the personnel department and have signed a few young prospects to add to the camp level of competition.

What is ahead is the meat of the off-season, so let's talk about some of the agenda-list items waiting ...

WHAT IS RUMOR, AND WHAT IS REAL?

Which teams are calling the Eagles about their quarterbacks? To whom are the Eagles listening? What is really happening behind closed doors? We aren't going to know until March, at least, but if you believe that where there is smoke, then you believe the Eagles are going to do something, maybe more than one thing, with their quarterbacks.

I wish I knew the plan. To me, the rumors are just rumors, but I'm enjoying them all the same. Something is going to happen at quarterback. Either the Eagles are going to extend some contracts, make some trades or juggle things around in some way. My feeling, once again: I just can't see a scenario where all three quarterbacks enter the final year of their contracts together. That is not the way the Eagles have historically done business.

How does it all end? Stay tuned.

THE SCOUTING COMBINE

The real crux of the draft preparation comes in a few weeks when the NFL convenes in Indianapolis for the Combine. The Eagles will interview more than two dozen draft candidates, measure their physical skills in the apples-to-apples running and jumping and strength displays and then return to the NovaCare Complex to cross check the results with what they see on film.

What does the Combine really mean? I've always been told that the opportunity to sit and talk to the kids means more than the actual 40-yard-dash times. Players vault up or drop down on draft boards based on how they present themselves during those interviews.

We also hear a whole lot of rumors during the time the teams are at the Combine, but how many of those rumors actually become truth? Were the Eagles ever linked, even once, to Jeremy Maclin before the team was on the clock last April in the draft? Teams have to be ready for everything and anything on draft weekend, and much of that legwork is accomplished during the time in Indianapolis.

FREE AGENCY AND WHAT IT MEANS

It could be that free agency is a giant dud this year with the pool of unrestricted free agents expected to be down, down, down if there is no new collective bargaining agreement. Players won't be unrestricted free agents until after their sixth NFL season, reducing the pool dramatically.

Really, the few days before the start of the March 5 free agency could be every bit as interesting as the weeks after. During those days, teams announce their tender offers to restricted free agents, and every team has key players on that list. The Eagles have some, too, like fullback Leonard Weaver, wide receiver Jason Avant and offensive guard/center Nick Cole.

Once free agency begins, and assuming there is no salary cap, who knows how much teams are going to pay for the elite of the elite free agents? If defensive end Julius Peppers leaves Carolina, what happens? Who breaks the bank for Peppers? Or do teams wade carefully into the waters to see how the market settles?

This is truly going to be an historic off-season for the NFL. The Eagles have always been as prepared as any team when it comes to predicting a market and moving at the right time. It's hard to say, at this point, what the climate will be in the free-agency world now, though.

THIS, THAT AND THE OTHER THING

You know something is going to come completely out of left field in the off-season. It always does. The Eagles will make a signing nobody expected, or they will pull off a trade nobody saw coming, or they will address a need that we didn't think really needed to be addressed.

The Eagles are putting their off-season blueprint together in the next few weeks, and then they will fine tune things just prior to free agency. Understand that the team is in a constant state of evaluation and that the picture changes day to day. Here are some other storylines to consider ...

  • What happens with Brian Westbrook? Obviously, a major story. Does he return in 2010? Westbrook should have a healthy off-season to prepare for next season, but he is due a reported $5.2 million bonus in the spring.

  • Where do rehabbing players like linebacker Stewart Bradley, linebacker Omar Gaither, tight end Cornelius Ingram, cornerback Ellis Hobbs, offensive lineman Shawn Andrews and center Jamaal Jackson fit into the equation for 2010? The Eagles have to make early calls on these players and then move to fill needs before the post-draft mini-camp, as I see it.

  • I'm really interested to see where Stacy Andrews factors into the offensive line puzzle.

Trade Kolb, the andrew sisters,kEEP westbrook with the team in a management capacity. I like the signing of Mallet I think he'll do a better job than Mccoy he has better hands then west. I've seen him play. He was overlooked by the NFL. We can bolster our draft with Kolb as trading fodder. Kolb is 26. Vick is 29 and way more talented. Kolb can get us pushed up in the draft. Get another outside linebacker and cornerback to replace sheldon moving him to the nickle...Move macho to the practice squad for more seasoning and common sense training.

First, I dont think the Andrew sisters can come back...they're approaching their max life. get better talent at the OL position. Second, Kolb is Garbage....Eazy D came in for pederson and has been the starter ever since;taking us further than any Eagle QB in history..Now that he has a few weapons Ya'll want trade him. The future is ours!!!...Some people in our fanbase are just stupid. Kolb is sorry, unproven has no talent, slow, can't read coverages, rattles easily, no mobility, after 4 seasons!!!! how much time does he need. Vick is 29, came in a starter, spent 2 years in jail and on supervised release, has'nt spent a full offseason and performed way better than Kolb!!The management brought in garcia....what does that tell you? stop with the he's young crap!, He's less than mediocre at best.I've been to the practices...

Runyan & Thomas both got beat bad off the edge last year. It really showed against the Cardinals. It was definately time to move on. This year Herremans played well after he came back, Jackson looked solid until he got hurt, Peters could be really solid - but he needs to Gell with the rest of the offense (both Andrews bros were dissapointing - I hope they can come back, but it will be tough). Overall its a good foundation and next year s/be better.

I never said they were great, I said they were solid. I also said you can't blame Jackson's problems on them. Thomas played great in pass protection, but I agree he wasn't a great run blocker that year. Runyan wasn't that bad in the run though, he was still bulldozing fools, just not as well as in his prime. Jackson wasn't performing well in 08, simple as that. He played much better this season, regardless of the talent around him.

You seem to have a selective memory mharris. Neither Thomas or Runyan could run block worth anything last year. We didnt even run right. Herremans was our best OL in 08. It was time to move on. They gave us a great decade, but the body takes alot of wear and tear on the OL.

We didnt have alot of yards, but McCoy, Weaver, and Bwest all averaged over 4 yards per carry. With a possible huge boost to the right side of the OL, and if Bwest can come back healthy, we could have one of the most dominant offenses in the league. I think Bwest really wants those 543 rushing yards and a SB.. athritic or not..

Thomas played exceptional football that year, but Reid knew he didn't have much of an NFL future left, and got us a top LT. Runyan wasn't playing amazing, but was solid in 08. His injury stopped him from being taken in FA, not his ability. He wouldn't have been ready until halfway through the 09 season, and by then he was less in shape, and teams already had their OT's figured out. You seem to have a spotty memory.

How about we trade Vick to the Browns for Dante Stallworth...Felon for Felon sounds fair to me. Stallworth has never played with a QB like Mcnabbb before, he could do really good in Philly...

The vet tackles were holding us back. Did you notice Runyan is out of the league and probably Thomas is now too. Last year the pass blocking was better, but overall I would say this years line was better.

this just may be the year we see what McGlynn has. I am keeping positive about the andrew's bros because if they come back healthy this O line is nasty and has good depth

I'd like McGlynn over Jackson even if he wasn't injured. McGlynn is tough. Jackson did play very well last season, not so much the season before. You can't blame a OLine when a C is looking bad when he has two solid veterans at both OT positions, Herremans to his left, and Cole, who was playing pretty solid RG for a youngster/unknown at the time. He was sloppy and fat that year. Last season he stepped it up and played very well, therefore nobody continued to question his ability. Then he goes down, and Cole shows he's a crappy C, solid RG. - So yeah, there was reason for thinkers to consider the idea of drafting a top notch C last April.

Vick for Otogwe would be great for us... nice call... Lawlor identified some interesting player prospects... Ducasse and Iupati for O-line (which I don't like cuz they are left tackles/guards and we are too heavily invested in Peters and Herremens and Iupati said he has trouble at RG) for the later rounds... Lawlor threw out: Koa Misi DE/LB from Utah, Ben Tate RB (Bri bird dogged him already), EJ Wilson DE of UNC (not a good pass rusher?)... Levi Brown QB-Troy (an Amish QB? - not for me thanks)- Jared Veldheer OT (monster from Hillsdale) - I must say I don't like Lawlors picks... I hope we don't draft off of this board... I'd like to see us get a RB earlier than Tate... anyway, Lawlor is smart so if we take his guys, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt...any opinions on these guys?

I dont think that people really want Collins or whatever...It's more so that they just want somebody. If we were to sign Josh Bullocks right now Eagle land would go crazy with the...He is fast and hits hard he was drafted pretty early blah blah blah crap. We need to sign or trade for someone that will be here 5 years from now. Sharper isn't that at all...
