Super Bowl A Study In Quarterback Precision

They went at it, as expected, and Peyton Manning and Drew Brees executed the game of Operation! absolutely perfectly. They used an array of short- and intermediate-area passes to move the football by bits and pieces up and down the field as Super Bowl 44 moved into the fourth quarter. And then, early in that fourth quarter, the Colts demonstrated why quarterback is the most important position in all of sports.

On a fourth-and-2 play from the New Orleans 46-yard line, with Indianapolis clinging to a one-point lead, the Colts ignored the natural call to punt and instead Manning threw a slant pass to Reggie Wayne for 14 yards and a first down. Wow. Amazing call and incredible confidence in Manning, and while the drive stalled and the Colts missed a 51-yard field goal attempt by Matt Stover, the play illustrated the importance of the quarterback position and the ultimate mandate that the quarterback plays well and leads the way to a championship.

There have been exceptions in the history of the Super Bowl, when teams have won led by only-OK quarterbacks. Trent Dilfer and Baltimore in 2001 won the Super Bowl. By and large, though, the best quarterbacks win Super Bowls. It is a rule of football. You can talk all you want about run/pass ratios, and you can talk about all the equations and, yes, they are all important. At the front of the list, though, is the play of the quarterback.

Watching the Saints defeat the Colts on Sunday night in a terrific Super Bowl, the play of both Manning and Brees dominated everything. Brees played better than did Manning, and New Orleans pulled the upset to win its first Super Bowl title. And certainly, with the quarterback position the focal point for many in this Eagles' off-season, watching Brees and Manning provides the bar for Donovan McNabb (insert your comment here) to reach in 2010.

McNabb is capable of these kinds of games. We have seen them many times through the years. Where he needs to be better, thinking back to 2009, is to deliver these kinds of games more consistently. It is certainly not fair to heap it all on McNabb, because there are many other components to consider in a game. Everything has to work for an offense to work, but let's be honest, the quarterback is the focal point.

What turned the game into a certain Saints win? A Manning interception, returned for a touchdown by Tracy Porter. It was Manning's only mistake of the game, exactly one more than Brees made. For all of Manning's greatness, the Saints won Super Bowl 44 because Brees was perfect, because New Orleans played keep-away from Manning's offense, because head coach Sean Payton did a fantastic job taking chances at the right time -- the onsides kick to open the second half was sheer guts and brilliance.

When the Eagles played New England in Super Bowl 39 five years ago, well, I hate to bring up the terrible memories, but the real reason Philadelphia lost was because the offense turned the football over, blew chances to score touchdowns and generally did not put some distance over the Patriots in the first half, when the Eagles had that chance. The offense did not convert prime opportunities and then Tom Brady got hot and New England pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Among the off-season priorities -- and we have discussed some of them and will continue to do so for weeks to come -- the play at the quarterback position has to on the list. McNabb has done a lot of great things -- goodness, he has been in six Pro Bowls -- but he has an important period of work in front of him. Nothing specific, other than everything.

Drew Brees delivered a perfect game at the perfect time and the Saints are the Super Bowl champions. That is the standard McNabb has to meet week in and week out next season. That has to be his goal.

The importance of great quarterback play was never illustrated more clearly than it was on Sunday night. Brees outplayed Manning and the Saints beat the Colts. Simple as that, and of course, not as simple as that. Brees led the Saints all season with an all-time performance and then he did on Sunday night what he had done for much of the regular season and the playoffs.

Can McNabb raise his game to that level every week? It has to be his goal -- and the goal of Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick -- to get to that high-water mark. Among the many things on the agenda, quarterback efficiency must be part of the equation.

Kolb is Garbage cont' Eazy D came in for pederson and has been the starter ever since;taking us further than any Eagle QB in history..Now that he has a few weapons Ya'll want trade him. The future is ours!!!...Some people in our fanbase are just stupid. Kolb is sorry, unproven has no talent, slow, can't read coverages, rattles easily, no mobility, after 4 seasons!!!! how much time does he need. Vick is 29, came in a starter, spent 2 years in jail and on supervised release, has'nt spent a full offseason and performed way better than Kolb!!The management brought in garcia....what does that tell you? stop with the he's young crap!, He's less than mediocre at best.I've been to the practices...

Dave Spadaro & Eagles web team !!!............ Please get rid of that Teva Medicines Flash Ad and spare us all. I can't believe a great organization like the Eagles with their kind of funding would allow that tacky old school flash ad style to be on this site. I can't even read anymore. I can re-program it for the Eagles and Teva Medicines for free as long as I get written approval to remove that number counter and stupid flashing. AS3, AS2, Flash Lite x.x whatever you need, let me know, send me the .fla original.

there are 4 or 5 Qb's I could name that are at least as good as Mcnabb and 4 or 5 that I can say are better than Mcnabb, But Brees is the only one holding that Trophy right now isn't he...........Isn't he

This team is not close to the SB champs for the holes we have talked about on other posts and cuz brees is so far superior to Dmac.

Tbone Dmac does not have the accuracy and consistency to sustain drives. So many throws he misses that should not be lissed that often. I don't get how you do not see that. How many games this year was our D on the field twice the amount of time our offense was

eddie haskell...you said it...Team...based on last season's perf our team was not good enough to win it all...lets see what this yrs team looks like b4 we start ranking them 5th or what ever..I think we will be right there in the mix with the SB champs, the East Champs and the North Champs again next year...no matter which QB we have the question will be if we assembled the best TEam to take us to that podium to hold up that silver football next yr..

Our D played bad in that game against AZ partly because of so many 3 and outs from our offense. But how many throws did Dmac miss in that game that very well could have put the cards down??? it's all those points left on the field and the three and outs that kills us and comes back to his accuracy

last I checked Ball hawk..we have been playing a west coast offense since Reid took over and we have had some very successful seasons...so to ask if that fits #5 is the type of ignoramus statements that we all get tired of reading...I agree that #5 needs to sharpen his accuracy skills, weather it be with practice or with an eye doctor I don't know, but our team has not performed well enough to win the SB yet...team sport

Tbone this team right now is so far behind the saints and vikes if Favre comes back. Also Dallas is better than us right now and the packers probably to. The eagles are 5th right now in the NFC SB is a very long way away in 2010

tbone: if u r willing to blow mcnabb when they win he deserves to his blatant inadequacies pointed out....the wco is predicated on short accurate timing throws.....not of which fits mcnabb....SO is it him or reid????????? Because make no mistake take team assembled to throw like the birds and the qb isnt accurate that can limit what the team can accomplish in the playoffs.....since we know reid isnt going anywhere....guys r coming off injury....it points to Mcnabb...let him walk after next yr for nothing...trade him now or resign him longer...and then be forced to sign Kolb w/o knowing what he can do...

is #5 the winningest QB in Eagles history ??? Yes. has he had us in the post season 9 out of 11 yrs?? Yes. Could he use some work on his accuracy ?? Hell yeah...Is he an Eagle ?? you bet...can he lead a team to a win ??? does he need to see an optometrist to help with his accuracy problems...probably......Can he smack the crap out of all of the blind , narrow minded armchairs that put the sole blame on him, when we finally win the SB in 2010...Hell Yeah

If Damc was consitently accurate and doing things to better himself than I would not have a problem. But I never see him on the side lines looking at tape or photos and I see him constantly missing easy slant passes or those intermediate throws.

ed, Ur absalutely (Sorry if spelled wrong) right but,had pretty much a revolving door at THE worst possition to have it at,...O line! Most would say LB but,we all know it starts up front & as much as i liked picking up Peters & Stacy they still werent 100% ready period. How many games did Harryman miss,...& out of all of'em thank god we didnt lose a guy like are C that early or it really would have shown how much work really is still needed on this line,...actually YES health has alot to do with it & u best believe dis,...neither Brees or Manning wouldnt have done as good with as much pressure #5 takes!

luc72 thats how i feel about mcnabb, HE is more of an above average game manager at this point his accuracy problems on the intermediate and short pass game is what prevents us from sustaining drives and if the running game isn't working for the first couple tries marty and andy take it out of the play book all game THEN mcnABB IS THROWING IT 40 TIMES.sPADARO HOW DOES MCNABB GET BETTER AFTER 12 YEARS ITS NOT HAPPENING

Forget QBs. The glaring difference of the Eagles and SB quality teams is WRs and RBs on offense. The Eagles presently have nothing close to NO's Thomas, Bell, Bush or even Indy's Addai, seeing as Westy is used up. Eagles' WRs are small and fast--that will not cut it anymore. NO featured large WRs that blocked out DBs--out muscled them and generally had their way. Eagle WRs will score suddenly and spectacularly, but SB winners need every down maulers at WR. The Eagles spirit, dedication and elan make them over achievers. This doesn't work against best teams in league.

It starts with the QB getting the ball to them that is catchable. The QB is the face of the franchise and why they get paid so much. They are supposed to be the leader of the franchise as well. When you have a QB that year in and year out struggles with the same things and nothing changes that is why he gets blamed

narrow minded S.h*t slingers ....last I checked there were a few more facets in the game other than QB...and It takes a team to win and a team also loses yet these armchairs with blinders on need someone to blame so why not blame the qb...Is Drew more accurate than Mcnabb ?? Yes. Is Peyton more accurate than Brady ?? I think so...IS Favre tougher than all of them ???? he holds the record in consecutive starts....all of that is fine when comparing one QB to another but wins and losses are compared by teams...there are 10 other guys on the field when a QB takes that snap..I guess all of them have immunity when you wind up in the loss column...

swoop i can name 1 guy on saints d better than ours....Vilma.....and only cause Bradley got hurt... mc dermott did cardinal sin....try to force your personnel into your scheme ...Williams changed scheme to fit players...so now you have to look at if the game is in the balance can DMac make the underneath and mid level crossing routes???? I am not sure he can....

Swoop we did have tons of injuries. However injuries has nothing to do with the accuracy and leadership of the QB. This team had plenty of weapons outside of Bwest. Celek, Djax, Avant, Weaver, McCOy, Maclin.

Ball hawk agree 100 percent Dmac would never make those throws. I was just surprised a little how the colts once they saw what was happening made no adjustment. Last night is a classic example though of 2 QB's that can make all the throws consitently which is what we need if we want the SB

U know,...it is easier to point at one indavidual for all are downs, yet i take the more realistic approach of the game & to be qwyte frank about it,we were doomed before we even got out of TC,...Who the hell is gonna win when u draft a TE for a reason just to see him fall before we could even get started.Or how bout loosing ur MLB who is by far are best shot at LB'er.Westy again who at one point was 40% of are O,....GONE....What part of that dont people get...Its mind boggling to say the least how some out here act as if they know what there talking about yet blame one man when football=TEAM!!

ED: Colts played a zone style in principle were worried about the Saints WR getting deep>>>Saints tried but couldn't so Payton changed it up and went underneath and Brees with his accuracy chewed them up...DIFFERENCE between Saints and Birds is the underneath accuracy of the qbs...

I was surprised how the colts let the saints WR's just get free breaks off the line and did not challenge them at all. It was obvious that throughout most of the game the front four was not getting to brees. Manning made a bad decision on that throw and the WR's had some dropped balls. If the eagles want to challenge a team like the saints we gotta get another DE to get some pressure.

I dont know about improvement cause again with youth that takes time but, what i do know is change something this team couldnt have done more with then they did in the last offseason. We not only picked up a new RG (Stacy) who was still recovering from inj.,hints why he became are RG but, then got rid of both are book end tackles & replaced one of'em with another who was still recovering from inj. Then turn around & let are best S here go after 12yrs.Welp whoever it is replacing him is gonna need sum time cause those are big shoes to fill. Then theres JJ & i dont need to say anymore.
