Back In The Game, And Ways To Stay There
It is amazing, two days later, how much better the view is from the perspective of 6-4 rather than 5-5. The Eagles got back into the playoff game, so to speak, by beating Chicago on the road. They have control of the season's destiny with Washington in town on Sunday. How can the Eagles do something they have had trouble doing for the last couple of years, and that is to take the momentum they have and roll with it.
To do so, the Eagles must play a more complete game than they showed in Chicago. Here is a list of some of the things the Eagles must bring to the table to beat a Washington team that has all kinds of injuries, all kinds of adversity, but is still playing lights-out defense and a backs-to-the-wall offense that still has big-play capability.
KEEP CHANGING IT UP ON OFFENSE
The use of the no-huddle offense is something that quarterback Donovan McNabb really likes, and the Eagles used it effectively against Chicago. For whatever reason, it seems to get the offense into more of an up-tempo, urgent mentality. Obviously, the Eagles get the personnel groupings they want on the field.
So let's hope the Eagles don't put the no-huddle in mothballs. No reason to use it every week, but if Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg can keep it on the front burner, the no-huddle offense can certainly aid the unpredictability of the offense.
So, too, is the use of Michael Vick in the spread formation. His 34-yard carry sent a jolt through the offense. Later, he was on the field to convert another third-and-short situation. We have not seen Vick in the red zone, but that has to be in the playbook somewhere. Vick can be a weapon if he is used a few snaps each game and he has a chance to run around and cause some havoc within the defense.
Let's not forget how effective the Eagles were at running the football at Chicago. It is going to be really fun to see what kind of progress LeSean McCoy makes on a week-to-week basis as he takes all the practice reps and knows going in that he is the man to run the football. He is a talented kid, a young man who is super quick in his first 10 yards and who makes people miss in that small area. You may not see McCoy break off a 65-yard touchdown, but he is going to have a lot of 15- to 35-yard gains in his career.
INVOLVE DeSEAN JACKSON A LOT
McNabb threw to Jackson 10 times in Chicago and completed 8 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. This is a lesson that should not be forgotten: No matter what defenses are doing, no matter how much they are rolling coverage his way, Jackson has to be a primary target in the passing game, in the running game, in the offense. The young man needs to touch the football 8 to 10 times each and every game the rest of the season.
Clearly, Jackson learned a lot during his rookie season. Most notable is the durability required to remain productive throughout the long, long NFL season. Jackson looks every bit as fast and spry as he did in Carolina on Week 1. There is nobody more explosive than Jackson, so he needs to have the football in his hands.
I like the progress rookie Jeremy Maclin is making. He is a standout in the making. Brent Celek is handling things very nicely at tight end. Jason Avant is as good as any slot receiver in the league.
But Jackson is special, a game-breaking player and he needs the football. Give it to him.
STRESS URGENCY AND DISCIPLINE
It's great that the Eagles adopted the must-win approach to beat Chicago. They went out and played hard-nosed, if imperfect, football to gain a huge road win. With a wounded Washington coming in on Sunday, will the Eagles be every bit as desperate?
We'll learn a little bit more about the team's leadership in this game. A team that has no business making the playoffs and doing damage there plays a sluggish game against Washington. A team that has its head on straight and that is truly ready for another playoff run goes out and plays outstanding football against Washington.
As for discipline, the special teams showed a lot of solid play and good mental discipline in Chicago. The Eagles were still penalized 8 times and that has to concern the coaching staff. So they have to continue to stress attention to detail and all of the little things. Penalties are a killer down the stretch. The best teams reduce their penalties and their mental mistakes at this time of the year. Andy Reid's Eagles have always done that in November and December. They have a chance to step up again this year.
GO WITH THE HOT HAND ON DEFENSE
Victor Abiamiri is still not 100 percent after his knee injury, so his reps have been limited in the games since he has come back. In his place, Jason Babin is playing very good football. Sean McDermott may have found something, something with Jeremiah Trotter at middle linebacker against power formations, so perhaps Trotter has earned some reps down the stretch.
With the secondary all sorts of banged up, the Eagles have turned to players like Sean Jones and Dimitri Patterson and Macho Harris in coverage and they have played well. Antonio Dixon is making plays at defensive tackle.
McDermott has exhausted his defensive depth chart and won't quit. He has shown early in his coaching career that he isn't afraid to challenge players and move pieces around. McDermott will have to continue with that approach, but the injuries are only going to get worse.
Against Washington, the Eagles have to make sure they aren't beaten down the field by the very good group of receivers. They have cornerbacks Sheldon Brown battling a hamstring injury and Asante Samuel battling a neck injury. Will they again have to go deep into the rotation to cover Washington?
At linebacker, well, things are different from one week to the next. It is as crazy as any situation as the Eagles have had at a single position in many, many years.
Yet, the defense keeps playing good, physical football. That is what playoff teams do. The Eagles are right there, in the hunt, and to stay there they have to find ways to win. Washington is next. The season is alive. Let's see how the Eagles handle their position in the stretch run.

Searching for underlying logic or a deep rooted understanding of the Eagles "fan" makes about as much sense as trying to understand why JeromeBrown99 only likes petting turtles thursday nights at 2:57 am. after eating Liverwurst doughnuts and tuna filled eclairs.

Bottom line is this....Redskins season is DONE...philly needs every win they can possibly get to win the division. DONT SLEEP ON THE SKINS!! Plain and simple. Philly is proven to be better...so be it. You have the home advantage..you've been playing this sorry team for years, get the revenge for what they did to you last season and sweep them. Philly has to score every quarter. You cannot get shut-out. After watching the cowboys and raiders game I see now why philly lost...the raiders defense is on point...With a good defense and a sorry offense, you will lose *cough* skins is a good example, but even with a team like the skins, you have to find ways to score...Mcnabb has to learn not to hold onto the ball and get it out quicker and be accurate( in a blitz situation)....

....I like what Im seeing with Phillys defense but they were exposed in the Bears game with the CBs but thats because of injuries but I think by getting G.P they should be okay. My only other concern with defense and I see this with alot of teams...if you're going to blitz...MAKE THE TACKLE!!! Dont rush your men and miss because then you gave up yards and wasted your men that could have been used in the deep end. Whats the point of blitzing if you get there but dont make the sack? This is why the Jets beat Patriots in week 2 because they made the tackle. Its a good thing im not a coach because I would lose a piece of hair for every miss tackle...i hate that. And dont think if you touch a man with a finger hes going to miraculously fall to the ground. Bring the man with the football to the ground!!! And on offense...*sigh* I dunno...you have the talent...its just comes down to who wants it more..All I know is skins arent going out like punks...

birdcrazy, that's not pragmatism. Believe it or not, I would say that briz is pragmatic. He expresses himself in a light hearted way, but he will also pick against the team if he feels that the evidence warrants it. Now, I'll honestly criticize the team, but I never pick against the team when they have a chance. I won't do it even if I'm not feeling very good about a particular game (such as that san diego game). But, I can appreciate a guy who will do it if he feels the facts say he should. That's pragmatic. This other "fan" is something else. I know that there are people who have serious self esteem issues, and they only feel comfortable when they tear themselves down. They don't feel worthy of success. They also tend to be envious of what others have. I wonder if this is an extension of that.

Simple point..How many times have the "loyal" fans and media counted the Eagles out in the past??? and what in 96% of the time happened???
I rest my case...

poet...pragmatic??? Hell, if I could predict the next 6 games I'd be a very rich man..but maybe edriss should place a HUGE bet in Vegas...

What is in the mind of a "fan" who puts so much energy into tearing down the team and players, and trying to convince other fans that HIS team doesn't have a chance to succeed? What must be the mentality of a person who wants to prove that his team isn't worthy, even as they win? It's one thing to feel that way. It's another to bash the team. It's a whole other thing to put so much energy in trying to convince other fans that they are wrong in believing the team has a good chance. The fans are called the 12th man for a reason. Still, this "fan" would rather we not be enthused. He'd rather convince us that our enthusiasm for our team is misplaced. We aren't talking about the lions. In that case he could say he's being a realist. We are talking about a team that was in the conference championship game just last season, and that is in the playoffs as we stand. Whatever this guy's mental issue, I have to think it goes beyond football.

edriss ...can I borrow your crystal ball..it sounds like it's wayyyy better then mine..but..I'm glad you believe in your opinions..I hope your not dissapointed..but, there come that "odds'" word again...but, hey, you never know..after all, this is the Not for Long league..and nothing stays the same for very long...
|
birdcrazy 11/24/09 7:04 pm ET |
Edriss..simple one of your "facts"...the odds are against it....but, hey, Like I said..anything is possible..but I'm not one of those wanting a coaching or QB change...

Dallas is not that good of a team. and as for pittsburgh they got the ring to prove what they are about. Also that was not a playoff game. If that is a playoff game pittsburgh is not losing no doubt.
|
edriscoll1010@... 11/24/09 7:01 pm ET |
I do not believe getting a new coach hurts this team. You also would have to make a smart hire. Look at the cards getting ken whisenhunt. Or the niners gettting singeltary he has them playing better ball. R we are young and full of talent all over the field. I think we can win for years to come with some minor adjustments. running the ball and making some serious dedication to it.
|
birdcrazy 11/24/09 7:00 pm ET |
Yea..ask Pittsburg and Dallas about that...they'd probably agree..they were unprepared for a loss to Kansas City and barely a win against the Skins..of course, their QB's are wayy better then DM....what happened?? ,,my point...on any given Sunday...
|
birdcrazy 11/24/09 6:58 pm ET |
Enjoy it now Edriss ..cause history shows that when the coach changes..usually the fortunes of the team take a turn for the worse for some time..why these morons in Philly think it will be different here boggles my mind....
|
edriscoll1010@... 11/24/09 6:55 pm ET |
It is because even with the injuries this team has come out unprepared in games and lost when they should not of no matter what.
|
edriscoll1010@... 11/24/09 6:54 pm ET |
I am one that does not believe AR will be the coach to win a SB here. Dmac I do not believe will win a SB until we run the ball more consistent because I do not believe he is consistent enough throwing the ball. However if they did I will gladly eat my word and they can say see now kiss our assss
|
birdcrazy 11/24/09 6:53 pm ET |
The current lot of Philly fans are, frankly, spoiled..the don't remember the days when we pushed to win 3 games a year..and celebrated if we did...and when it eventually goes back to that, as all teams do...I hope these morons start spouting how much they missed the AR and DM days..and I'll laugh my arse off when they do....
|
birdcrazy 11/24/09 6:50 pm ET |
I didn't buy the "on paper" bullsheet from the beginning (as I stated in hundreds of posts) this team is very young and injury depleted,,it is friggin amazing they are 6-4...of course NOt ONE idiot fan in this town sees it that way,,,but i'm not surprised by that...
|
birdcrazy 11/24/09 6:48 pm ET |
I believe AR and Donovon would luv to see some of these moronic fans eat crow...and you know what..iffin it did happen, and AR and DM won a SB this year..I would love to see them tell the whole city of Philadelphia to kiss their royal asses and leave the team..but that won't happen...but I would not blame them one bit if they did...
|
edriscoll1010@... 11/24/09 6:46 pm ET |
Birdcrazy you can not ignore the fact that this team has not won when a game is on the line and need a last minute drive. Or that they have not come back and taken the game. Also last year I tihnk a lot of people like me believed this team was the best in the NFC this year I do not see it
|
edriscoll1010@... 11/24/09 6:44 pm ET |
I want this team to win but I see how the other teams are playing and that they have won in every scenario. The saints have shown they come back from 20 down and win. The vikes have shown they can win in crunch time. Just things the eagles have not shown that they can do this year. I'm not saying they are done but people on here saying they are the best is just ridiculous.
|
birdcrazy 11/24/09 6:42 pm ET |
I understand that edriss..but this is a different time of year..this time of year, as stated before, separates the men from the children..this Eagles team has, for the most part, risen to the challenge...I see no reason to not believe they can do it once again....stats and facts be damned....
|
edriscoll1010@... 11/24/09 6:40 pm ET |
Yes but Brees and Favre are also much much better Qb's than eli manning. Favre is proven he can win the big game and brees is playing as good as any QB over the last few years.
|
edriscoll1010@... 11/24/09 6:39 pm ET |
To me the past is the past and I am looking at how they have played the whole year. And for me the answer is no they do not match up with those teams. I havent even mentioned how bad our Special teams has been, Between rocca and his crap punts and the constant penalties killing our field position.
|
birdcrazy 11/24/09 6:39 pm ET |
Remember the way the Gmen rolled in the regular season last year..then ran into us...the Saints and Vikings are very good teams..but they are capable of losing at any given time also..the post season makes giants out of midgits sometimes....
