Is The Season On The Line Against Bears?

CHICAGO -- In its truest sense, tonight's game against Chicago is not a must-win game, as Donovan McNabb has proclaimed. The Eagles could lose this game, win their next six and still make the playoffs. But on every other level, the Eagles have to win against Chicago. No way the Eagles can lose a third straight game and then run the table. It would be the most unusual 180-degree turn in, well, in a long time.

So the best way for the Eagles to regain control of a season that has been so up and down is to win against a struggling Bears team. Both teams are in the same position along with most of the rest of the NFC. Both teams are desperate for a victory.

And the team that dictates the tempo early on wins the game.

See, I think I have it all figured out. I think the Bears want to win a 13-10 kind of game. They want to run the football and give Jay Cutler, under an incredible amount of pressure in this city, easy throws and a chance to manage the game, rather than have to win it with his arm. No doubt the Bears know how much trouble the Eagles had last week in San Diego against the ground game, and they know the Eagles' linebackers are still in a state of flux.

The Eagles, on the other hand, hope that the groove Donovan McNabb was in during that second-half comeback in San Diego continues. I think the Eagles want to do what they do: Spread the field and throw the football and take advantage of their talent at the receiver positions.

So which way wins? Slow-it-down Chicago or hurry-up-and-get-down-the-field Philadelphia?

There are so many storylines to follow here. The Eagles have worked all week on improving their performance in the red zone. The defense is patching positions together with all of the injuries. The special teams go against one of the very best and most sound groups in the league. This is a really difficult spot on the dreaded Sunday night (when the Eagles are 0-7) and in a rabid stadium that is extremely loud.

On paper, well, the Eagles are probably the better team. But paper means nothing, as we know. A statistical website called FootballOutsiders.com ranks the Eagles as the fourth-best team in the league, behind only New England, Indianapolis and New Orleans. What does that mean? Absolutely nothing. The Eagles are 5-4, and they need to win now.

So here we go again. McNabb has to be on his game. The Eagles must fashion some kind of a running game with LeSean McCoy and Eldra Buckley and Leonard Weaver. The offensive line welcomes back Jason Peters at left tackle, which means they can move Nick Cole to right guard, which means the line should have more push than it had last week, which means that, um, the Eagles will run the ball more?

I don't know about the last part, honestly. I see this as a game in which the Eagles can throw the football a little bit. The weather is perfect -- chilly, but low wind and crisp. The Bears are having injury problems of their own on defense. The Eagles have too much talent at wide receiver and tight end to stay down for long.

More than anything, we're going to find out about some intangibles here. Leadership, for one. Playoff teams, good teams, don't lose this game. Depth, for another. The Eagles are reaching deep into the 53-man roster here. Urgency, finally. How much will the team back McNabb's talk, his must-win edict?

Yes, the season is on the line tonight in so many ways. After two tough defeats, the Eagles are lucky enough to still control their fate this season. They need to beat Chicago and then look ahead. There is no other option. Win tonight, and keep the season alive.

You know what? Im kinda of sick of all the McNabb talk. you know what hate situation is here? It comes down to people who are willing got EXCEPT where we are and people who ARENT willing to except it. Its like both sides have valid arguments. If u are ready for a switch, are you well within your right because in 11 years, 5 is STILL having accuracy problems, hasnt won a SB, and doesnt show passion. If you are against a switch then you have a valid point because 5 is the most successful QB in team history. He has gotten us to the playoffs more then has hasnt. And he is still able to play well. So at the end of the say, there will ALWAYS be disagreement on this subject.

ok- Why am I on Mcnabb's back sometimes. He lacks Passion,Heart, Leadership this is all a fact. He also lack a sense of urgency in key times of a game. These are things that I just dont understand about sports. I have a background in wrestling and I just dont understand a lack of intensty. He also has shown times of really signs of anixety issues in pressure situtions that has to be concerning. I mean he is going home if he can't get pumped up for this game what game can he. I hope he proofs me wrong the rest of the year but if not then it time to go in another direction.

I need to go. I have company coming in. It's funny, a few of them are bears fans, from Chicago. I told them about the debate. They all agree, they would take McNabb in a trade right now, on the spot. They would give up Cutler and a draft pick. It's amazing how so many ... players, coaches and even fans from other teams ... see what we have but you guys can't see it (or don't want to see it.) Eh, well. It must be difficult to root for a guy to play well when you want him traded. I know that I'll be rooting for McNabb to play well tonight. How about you?

JB, you may be free of you chemical enhancements, this evening, but if you think I'm going to continually repeat my self concerning injury limitations, mental fortitude and emotional impairments, pretend that I'm not posting. I've played into your rediculas overtures enough to know your not worth the time. Do you get it?

Yes, mick, I admit, you and incongrous have a lot in common. As for McNabb without Westbrook, I don't know the numbers, but I'm sure he's over .500. Last post season Westbrook played, but he was hurt and couldn't get two yards. McNabb put the team on his back, as he has many times, and won two tough games on the road. I guarantee you this, the team's record is better with McNabb than it is without ... particularly in the playoffs. You can look that one up too while your at it. I understand why you need to ask questions like that, though. When you look at the evidence, all of your McNabb bashing shows itself to be ridiculous. So, now you're looking for some evidence to prove that McNabb shouldn't get credit for all of those wins. While, of course, the losses are on him. Westbrook has been a great player, but McNabb has been the single biggest reason (among the players) for the teams success. Look at how the team has changed over the decade. The evidence is obvious.

Well im not trying to get rid of McNabb. But I just heard the quote of the season during the Match-up preview from NFL Network. "WHEN MCNABB IS ON, THE EAGLES ARE UNSTOPPABLE. WHEN HE IS OFF, ANYONE CAN STOP THE EAGLES!" Wow.

MickJag/ Say what you want, you don't have to have the beers to speak your mind, "but why not?" Your opinion is every bit as good as anyone elses I've seen posted here. As a matter of record, "I like yours better then some of the self proclaimed analysts I read here." No one is "Boss Here," although some think they can orchestrate control. B/S, etc, etc, etc...

JB, I have to say, that has been among my favorites too. Most of McNabb's 450 yards came "after the game was decided". Correct me if I'm wrong, but this was a game that was still winnable if the defense could have held on that final possession. Didn't it end as a one score game? Or do we only count the first half now? Before last week, san diego had a top ten passing defense. McNabb ate them up all game, moving up and down the field at will. Even with the redzone problems, which I don't discount, we win that game more times than not. Some will see what they want to see. I still keep reading that we only went to the Super Bowl because of t.o. Some people saw him out there during the playoff run, even as he was rehabbing an injury that kept him out.

Poet/ "Plain and Simple," he got some of the best tools, (I'll make it easy for you), weapons and his totalities show it. However, "If you've been watching him as long as you say," and can not see his demise and attempted use of talents, he never possessed, time to change your optomitrist and get real. Straight up, "I don't want what your satisfied with!" Change is at hand and I hope the ownership, a successful one, "I might add," does not see sentimentality through your eyes. For the record, If I was like many of the hero worshippers I see on this site, I'd of been a New England fan, quite a few years ago...
