Who Steps Up As Leaders On This Defense?

Soon, it will be a big story. When the Eagles gather again at training camp, and they will answer the question: Who steps up as a leader on the defense? And invariably, the answer will come not from what the players say, but from what they do in crunch time during the season. The defense, while returning 10 starters from last year, also has to find its identity as a group.

When the players were asked during the spring, they didn't seem to think it would be a big issue at all. One after another of them agreed that moving on without a veteran as respected and admired as Brian Dawkins required a certain adjustment. No doubt that not seeing Dawkins in the huddle, for example, was a bit of a jolt at first, but that the natural progression of the practices and the life in the NFL where everyone understands it can end very quickly, allowed players to focus on the here.

And now as the Eagles move to within a month of the start of training camp, it is natural to wonder again who is "the leader" on defense. Truth be told, there is never "one guy" who is the leader. Leadership is a team thing. If, however, you are looking for a "leader" to emerge, there are some worthy candidates. Here is a list from this perspective ...

QUINTIN MIKELL, safety

Great team player, very respected in the locker room. Quintin Mikell has the presence in the secondary to command leadership and he has the rags-to-riches story -- non-drafted player to quality starter -- that every player understands and admires. Mikell has been in the scheme, he has been in Philadelphia and he spent years learning from Dawkins. Mikell isn't a fist-pumping kind of leader, but he will speak up when he feels the need.

STEWART BRADLEY, middle linebacker

Very vocal, extremely hard working and well liked, Stewart Bradley has already stepped up into the role. Understand that the linebackers have grown up together, and all of them are extremely close. They know the system. They know each other. They are a glue in this defense, and Bradley as a middle linebacker natural fills that leadership role. He runs the huddle and has the command there. Bradley won't back down from the challenge of stepping up here. He is already on the way to being a Pro Bowl linebacker. The players know the space he has in the locker room.

SHELDON BROWN, cornerback

Is his contract issue one that will impact Sheldon Brown and his standing in the locker room? It shouldn't be a factor at all. Players understand the business aspect of the game. It is expected that Brown will come to training camp on time and in great shape, and then he will be one of the best players on the defense. He is a student of the game, an excellent cornerback and a big part of the defense. Brown's voice is heard in the locker room. He is cordial with the press. Brown is tough, prepared and has a strong work ethic.

ASANTE SAMUEL, cornerback

Another member of the secondary. It sure is promising that the Eagles have so much experience throughout the defense. Asante Samuel skipped the last week of the mini-camp and some out there wondered if that would hurt his credibility in the locker room. I seriously doubt it. Samuel took care of his personal business and will be at training camp and then will show leadership during the practices that few have shown during the many years I've watched Eagles practices. He is vocal and he is engaging and he is challenging and he is funny. Samuel is a leader, no doubt about that. He is a tactician and a tremendous cornerback. Plus, he has the championship pedigree from his days in New England, and that helps in the locker room.

BRODRICK BUNKLEY, defensive tackle

Not only is Brodrick Bunkley becoming a top-notch defensive tackle; he is also becoming an emotional leader who knows when to turn it on. You may not see Bunkley and his emotions, but the players do. Bunkley is pure energy on game days and he bleeds the game. Don't worry about the Eagles lacking emotion with Dawkins in Denver. There will be plenty of it, in large part because the defense has so much swagger and so many high expectations already. Bunkley is somebody who will keep the players fired up in the huddle and in the locker room before the games.

way I see it, with the changes at linebacker and in the secondary...we should be better..Asante not a vocal leader, never has been...that role needs to be defined...Asante leads by example..he's much better at that....

Ahhhh Frankie, Frankie, Frankie...leave it to you to bring a little doom and gloom into my fourth of July celebration...be nice if you got your facts lined up before you make comments..the D was fair last year..not dominating,,but good..the offense score more points then ever in this franchise history...if the truth be told we lost more than one game last year cause we couldn't keep the other guy from scoring..in my book, that falls on the defense...and we SUCKED at stoping the run when we needed to..that has to improve this year..and the D needs to develop a killer instinct..no mercy...period..

bluemangroup=== Yeah barden has the talent.... but he's not Plax. It's gonna take 2-3yrs for him to come around to his full talent. He's not nearly as nfl ready like D.Jack was. We can worry about him next year.

i love our team guys with all our great upgrades from last year..im a die-hard eagles fan so dont think the comment im a bout is doubting our team..check out ramsen barden that got drafted by the giants..that guy is scary..he is 6'6 and can jump to the moon..just as we thought that plaxico is out of our lives here comes barden he has great talent and im scared..but anyways i still think we can beat the giants because our team looks great but our greatest competition is the giants.

Hobbs is here on a 1yr term. Meaning, if and that's a huge if and a most likely not gonna happen, brown tanks or holds out this season, we have a vet that can start in his place. An insurance policy. Reid is two steps ahead of whatever we're thinking of trying... Phils.. June has always been a bad month for them. They usually turn it on in july anyway. Rollz will turn it around. Madson is still stuck in the closer mindset. Same thing happened to Myers. Going back n forth makes you go screwy. Canadian Club=== Don't criticize him for TRYING to wright articles when there is NOTHING whatsoever to wright about. It is funny how many people want Dave's job..... GETUPOFFHIM!

Not true! While the D ranked third last season and was statistically stronger than the O, defensive meltdowns were responsible for half the losses last year. 1st Dallas game, 1st WAS game, 1st Giants game? Championship game too. So yes, it certainly was a problem and has been in the past at times too. In 2006, the Eagles had the #2 offense but only the 15th defense, which was embarrassed by N.O. in the divisional round. Looks like the O and D could both be great this year, but we'll see.

I think asante should step up to be a leader on the D,But the D is and never was the problem on this team,They have been holding this team down for years even though they let us down in the second half of the nfc championship last year. Our problem has been for years is the sputtering Offense/Bad calls from andy/and wrs.Dog me out all you want but it is what it is.We will find out by game 6 of this year what the real deal is gonna be with the eagles this year.I am happy that everybody is saying that this is our year but im not going to be to hype about it because i know this team will let you down at a snap of a finger so im just gonna take it game by game and hope for the best for the team

Goodposts,..both BC and Ignots,..Phils are baffling,..esp Rollo who has a lower OBP than the ninth spot!.that's incredible....Yea,..pitchin',.. but as I indicated b4,..their batting is down and clutch hits have been way down since about game 40,.Ibanez hiatus just amplified the situation,..btw,..his average went down about 30 points as well b4 DL...SO,..i'm off until next week,..I'll leave you knuckleheads with this tidbit,...rumor has it,.3D is undergoing emergency surgery as we speak,..apparently,..the doctors are attempting to excise the Edge from his oral cavity,..good luck and may G_D speed,....bird is the word,...kids ...yur on yur own!

This ain't last year for the Phiten..pitching has been atrocious so far, both starting and releivers..bats have been inconsistant since Ibanez left the lineup(underscores his value)and I think I'm feeling a Charlie temper tantrum about to erupt..these guys, to a man, are playing 3rd place baseball right now..and they are much better than their last 25 games....even Utley looks complacent..and that's saying a lot....
