What To Expect From McNabb This Year

In year number 11, with a fortified offensive line in front of him, with depth as he has never had at wide receiver around him, with a system in place that works, with great talent in the backfield, more success is in the making for quarterback Donovan McNabb. He showed it in the June Organized Team Activities. The offense clicked. The timing was right. The confidence McNabb showed in throwing to his tight ends, his receivers, his backs ... it all looked so promising.

What will McNabb be asked to do, though? Is there tweaking in the making for the offense? Will the Eagles look to throw the football 30-35 times a game and spread the field and use the top-to-bottom speed on this roster and create great matchups? Or will the Eagles take a more balanced approach, and maybe follow the formula they used in playoff wins over Minnesota and New York last year, when the points were hard to come by?

Or will it be a game-by-game proposition? The Eagles seem to have the personnel to beat defenses any which way they want. They can line up and play smash-mouth football, and they can spread 'em out and throw the ball all around the yard.

And that brings it all back to McNabb, who is in such a great place right now, both physically and mentally. He is primed to continue his prime, and he has a great situation around him in every way imaginable. It used to be that the Eagles needed McNabb to be great to win games. They wanted to feature McNabb and throw the football a lot, and McNabb had to be terrific to win.

While he still needs to be on his game, McNabb doesn't have to throw for 345 yards and three touchdowns to win. He can hand off to Brian Westbrook and LeSean McCoy. He has maybe the best fullback he has ever had in Leonard Weaver behind him. He has an excellent offensive line -- on paper, yes -- in front. And the pass catchers are really going to be outstanding.

So is McNabb in line for the best season of his career? And is it fair to measure the success he has in terms of his numbers, or by the wins and losses the Eagles generate?

I'm interested to see how it all unfolds. I look at a game like the opener against Carolina and my thoughts right now are that the Eagles must go in with a patient approach and understand that things aren't going to come easily against a good Carolina defense, one that is still stinging from its playoff loss last season to the Cardinals. It is just as important how McNabb manages the games as it is how he flashes big numbers. And maybe his most important statistic is turnovers, a category in which McNabb has historically been outstanding.

That bizarre stretch of poor play last year was alarming most of all because McNabb turned the ball over against Cincinnati and Baltimore, and because in earlier games he missed chances to make big plays. It was very uncharacteristic of McNabb, who righted things after the benching in Baltimore.

Anyway, we'll see how quickly the offense finds its stride in the training camp ahead -- four weeks away!!! -- and through the preseason and then into the regular season. McNabb is obviously a gigantic key to the whole puzzle, and as much as things around him have changed in the months that have passed since the loss in Arizona, is it fair to wonder what stays the same with him, and about him?

In 2004 we signed TO, at the time a great deal, and McNabb thrived with a star reciever to throw to having his best season in his career. Now we have about 3 star recievers on the offense. Of course they don't have the big name aspect, but being recognizeed doesnt make you a great player. As a defense are you more likely to gameplann specifically against Hines Ward or JMac whos unproven? Put in that situation I believe JMac would put up better numbers because players dont have the same recognition of that player than they do a vetran. We have a better supporting cast for McNabb then in 2004, barring any injuries, we will win a super bowl this year.

actually Schiller there is a hierarchy of cancer. id rather have basal cell carcinoma, they'd freeze it with liquid nitrogen and remove it. end of story its a 99.9% effective treatment, then malignant melanoma, the most deadly of the skin cancers.

SO -- I've got a few extra moments and it's time to let folks know what I know. The only Eagles fans that will be unhappy after this season will be those that enjoy bashing their beloved -- and those aren't really fans at all; save everything Eagles; McNabb is actually reaching his prime, not passing out of it. In dream I've seen the style of play that's coming; I don't want to give anything away to the opponents though, so I won't give details -- just advice -- save everything you can for the next two years; skip a year; then save again. Three in Four and maybe more. These Eagles teams over the next few seasons will be the greatest Eagles since the Superbowl come to be and some will argue them amongst the greatest ever. Enjoy, Eagles, Enjoy.

And I still think we are going to make a move to get a power back at some point in time.....and we got younger and more dynamic at WR....love the moves......we're going to score a lot of points....mark my word!!!!!....so with that being said....our success is going to fall on the defenses ability to stop opposing teams from keeping up with us.....We made some great moves on defense...and all who are skeptical will see once we get going, just how great those moves were.....I'm going out on a limb here...but #5 name will be mentioned in the MVP talk this year.....take that to the bank!!!!!

As GK here, it is my duty to put things in perspective to some mindless wonders who don't get it. My apologies to the brethren that have heard this spiel b4. The direct correlation between complainers and naive, ignorant,or dumb posts is astounding. i mean, do you ever read what you write? who are you to put "things in perspective to some mindless wonders that don't get it?" what makes them mindless wonders and you a genius? this just really bothers me and i feel that because some of you spend 8 hours a day on this website chatting it up, those that only have the time to post/discuss frequently are automatically thrown to the wolves. that's not being a fan of the eagles or football in general.

brizer - i really don't understand you sometimes. you're very arrogant. who are you to tell me or anyone else what kind of fans of the game (or life???) we are? just because you make every one of your posts sound like a masters thesis and are content with everything that goes on in the eagles organization doesn't make you dictator of everyone else. i'm able to visit the eagles website daily and while i don't post nearly as much as some of you, i still have valid points and for you to dismiss mine or anyone elses because we don't agree with you is very, very arrogant. don't tell me to grow up, or call me naive, or anything else. you're no more of a fan than anyone else because you sound educated or because you see things a certain way.

To those that want to complain that we talk more than Eagles Football on here...tough luck, go somewhere else. we have fun on here, we talk bout whatever we want too. Also, Bri aka GK, brings great comments to this board, if you don't understand him, go back too school. What Im tired of is the ones who complain and B*it*ch that we talk other things.

Strange dream lastnight. The Eagles had fumbled the ball and it was popping and squirting all over the field. nobody from either team could get control of it. then I woke up. Anticlimatic, I know, but there you have it. Not even to TC yet and I'm having Eagles dreams. not a big fan of toyota celicas. The word be bird!!!

One who attempts to separate life from football and visa versa is not a true fan of football,....or life. Many have ascribed to the philosophy on this board that I espoused on here years ago,.that is to say,..I'm here to educate and entertain and expect the same in return. I have not been disappointed. It's refreshing to put a face on a poster in this sometimes faceless society in which we live. As GK here, it is my duty to put things in perspective to some mindless wonders who don't get it. My apologies to the brethren that have heard this spiel b4. The direct correlation between complainers and naive, ignorant,or dumb posts is astounding,.....bird is the word.

moses - I respect that you admit faults - few sports fans, especially on the internet- can do that. And I really don't mean to sound arrogant or shoot you down each time, but guess what - you know who's contract is guaranteed for its duration? In the NFL? ZIPPO - nobody. Dawkins might retire anyday now let alone play four years. They give players guaranteed money up front for some contracts, but any team can cut any player they want at their whim. I still don't get your point - just cause you got the money to buy something, doesn't mean you do...

Ok Schiller I did make a mistake. But I was tryna make a comparison to McCoys 4 year deal to Dawkins 4 year deal over in Denver. Like I said earlier, this team has enuff money under the salary cap and they coulda gave Dawk 4 more years but they didn't and he went where the money was and ur right he did get overpaid for a Safety his age. But I guess they figure he will bring a winning attitude to the defense, etc so they paid him to stay there for 4 years. But who knows if Dawk can play up to the age of 41? He's 35 now and two of those four years probably will be on the bench mentoring a young safety(s) or seeing a deminished roll. The first two years are guranteed that he will be on the field heaven forbid any injury. Now getting to McCoy and his contract. Yes most teams to start their rookies out with 4 year deals. But many teams give their rookies 6 or 7 year deals depending on the need at the position.

moses - Dawk was offered at two year deal by the birds. There's no reason we "just didn't sign Daw to a two year extension" becuase they tried to - he took the money elsewhere. There's no relation between that and McCoy deal - 4 years is standard for rookie contracts. Dawkins is too old to play the sport well now, and wanted a lot of money (Denver overpaid for him - it's a well reported fact). McCoy is a rookie running back - you're comparing apples to (insert any random plural object that doesn't even remotely have to do with a different kind of fruit).

You kno wat I just noticed something. We signed McCoy to a 4 year deal and Dawk was signed to a 4 year deal in Denver. Not to go back into all this but how come the eagles just didn't sign Dawk to a two year extension? I don't get that at all. Hell we coulda gave Dawk a 4 year deal but thats now how Banner and Lurie roll. I think I have deciphered wat the eagles are exactly trying to do here. They are trying to start a youth movement and draft impact players to come in and make a difference to this team instead of signing high profile players in FA. Andy Reid is tryna give SOME of these bums a chance to make a name for themselves. So with us as fans crying for a top WR, we got quite a few in the draft and at least two on this team in Curtis and Djax. I really think that Curtis, Djax, Maclin, Gibson, and Ingram can be big threats at the reciever position. But I still say that the time for us to win is NOW justinmorr.

Your absolutly right amoses. I come in here time and time again and the comments have nothing to do with the artical or football in general for that matter. Expecially Brizzer, he says the strangest things that I cant even understand half the time. For god sakes people. Talk abut the Eagles on the Eagles official website will you? With that being said. Ok I dunno why ppl are on here talking about stuff not related to this article. Anyway, I expect great things from this club in 2009. I expect us to win RIGHT NOW in 2009 instead of having to do it all over again in 2010 which I really think it wont happen. McNabb stated in his PC a few weeks ago that he is focused on winning the superbowl in these last two years. McNabb isn't going to win the superbowl in 2010. He is going to win it this year. So I expect him to stick to his word and bring the hardwood to philly.

Iggdb - Man, sorry about your cousin. I gotta say, as someone who survived a brain tumor when I was six (wasn't supposed to - no joke) and I had a second one later - not a problem, then lost my Father to brain cancer and has been involved in the cancer community a lot (and I'm in school to be an oncology social worker), bro, there ain't any hierarchy of cancers. They're all terrible. Dig deep and cut your coworker a break. That said, annoying people get cancer too, not saying you're wrong, just suggesting a bit more understanding.... Firelion - love from a fellow survivor who's lost as well. Let's go JJ
