Bold, Aggressive Trade Nets Peters

The Eagles got the deal done. And to think the draft is still a week away.

In the latest of a series of aggressive off-season moves, the Eagles traded the 28th overall pick, a 2009 fourth-round pick and a 2010 late-round pick to the Buffalo Bills for two-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters. To ensure his services, the Eagles inked Peters to a lucrative six-year deal. Even after this bold move, the Eagles still hold the 21st overall pick and a total of 10 selections in next weekend's draft.

"Jason Peters is the best left tackle in football," said head coach Andy Reid. "He is a powerful and athletic tackle and I have admired his play over the last few years on film. I have always believed that success in the National Football League is derived from the strong play of the offensive and defensive lines. This offseason we have added two young, top-flight offensive linemen in Jason and Stacy Andrews."

The 6-4, 340-pound Peters fills the final position on what will be an outstanding offensive line for years to come. With Peters in the fold, the Eagles will likely boast the biggest offensive line in the NFL at an average of 333.6 pounds per starter.

Peters
Meet Jason Peters on Sunday on a special Eagles Live! at 10:30 AM

Including the addition of Stacy Andrews in the first weekend of free agency and now Peters, the entire starting offensive line is 28 years old or younger. Peters turned 27 in January and is in the prime of his career. Factor in the return of Shawn Andrews, who was lost for most of the 2008 season after a back injury in September, and the Eagles have added two Pro Bowl linemen in the off-season. The Eagles also outbid a number of other teams for the services of starting fullback Leonard Weaver. On defense, the Eagles bolstered the depth of the safety position with playmakers Sean Jones and Rashad Baker.

The Eagles were able to swing the deal for Peters thanks to a draft-day trade last year with the Carolina Panthers. The Eagles sent their first-round pick to Carolina for a second-round pick, a fourth-round pick and its first-round pick in 2009. In all, the Eagles were able to draft Trevor Laws, Quintin Demps and Mike McGlynn plus acquire Peters thanks to the deal with the Panthers. In addition to the 28th overall pick, the Bills also received Philadelphia's fourth-round pick this year and a sixth-round selection in 2010.

The acquisition of Peters completes an extensive makeover of the offensive line in just one off-season. Despite giving up just 23 sacks and breaking the franchise record for sacks-per-pass play ratio in 2008, the Eagles made upgrading the offensive line a priority. Longtime bookend tackles Jon Runyan and Tra Thomas became unrestricted free agents. Thomas signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, while Runyan is recovering from off-season microfracture surgery.

Peters was a college teammate of Shawn Andrews at Arkansas. Peters, however, did not play on the offensive line. He was a tight end. Originally signed as a rookie free agent in 2004, Peters has also been named second-team All-Pro by The Associated Press twice in his five years with the Bills. He's started 55 of the 65 career games he's played in, with the last 37 at the left tackle position. Peters earned his second consecutive Pro Bowl nomination following the 2008 season, becoming the first Bills offensive lineman to make back-to-back trips to the all-star game since 1993. However, Peters has not played in either Pro Bowl due to injuries.

In the beginning of his career, Peters was a tight end who primarily played on special teams. Peters won the right tackle job from former No. 1 pick Mike Williams and started the final nine games in 2005. Deemed a player on the rise, the Bills inked Peters to a long-term contract extension in 2006. Peters took over the starting left tackle spot in that same season. Following his dominating Pro Bowl campaign of 2007, one in which he began to earn acclaim as one of the premier offensive tackles in all of football, Peters held out for the entirety of training camp and rejoined the team in September just days before the 2008 season opener. Despite playing in a new offense, Peters recovered to make his second consecutive Pro Bowl.

As a pro, Peters has also scored two touchdowns. He blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone against Cincinnati in December 2004. In the season opener of 2005, Peters caught a touchdown pass against the Texans.

A native of Queen City, Texas, Peters left the University of Arkansas after his junior season. He playing in a total of 36 games and caught 28 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns. In 2003, Peters earned All-SEC second-team honors after starting every game at tight end and ranked third on the team with 21 receptions for 218 yards and all four of his scores. Showing a knack for line play, he also delivered 61 knockdowns/key blocks.

And again iceboy you really are a moron. You still are blabbing away at the mouth and not watching what comes out of it. I think your're the only dope on here that was bothered by my comments about my troubles getting on this website. Tell you what, why don't you get your panties out of the bunch you have them in and keep your mouth shut son, trust me we'll both be happier that way.

You know Strikeking....you continue to prove my point...you are a clown and I thought before I spoke. Nobody cares how much trouble you had getting into the site. I see a #1 WR as a luxury, not a necessity. It falls behind OL (done), TE, & RB. I'm not foolish enough to believe that this team will ever go 16-0. I have never called a talk show, nor do I plan to. I have bashed AR for not running the ball enough, so after several probably statements, you hit on one...congrats. One thing is obvious...your mouth is more developed than your brain.

Clowns like me? Fans like us? Iceman first of all you need to watch what comes out of your mouth about me. I was venting my anger towards the fact that whoever runs this website screwed up my info, and your gonna come at me talking about how I give fans like you a bad rap. Son I am one of the most diehard fans there is,and most reasonable too. Your probably one of those morons who call up talk shows every year talking about how the eagles are gonna go undefeated,16-0,we can't be beat... and who talks about how we need a #1 wide out every single year then turn around and bash the front office for not getting a #1 etc... So next time you go and make a boneheaded comment again like that Iceman think before you speak.

The front office has done a good job this off season securing the lines that make it possible for us to make plays. Oh yeah get a big name wide receiver and put anyone in at QB without a good line blocking for him and the WR might as well go sit on the side lines... Cause the QB can't get the ball away quick enough! You dont build a house from the roof down, so quite worrying about all the stupid Drew Rosenhaus clients who all complain and cause problems...

And on top of it we still have the picks and cap space to move around in the draft or persue another big name player. Regardless of who we pick, be it Pettigrew, Wells, Moreno, Brown, or any of the recievers in this years draft, we will be better with that player + Peters than we would have been with that player + A.Smith, Oher, or Beatty.

How in Gods name could anyone be complaining about this?! I can't even count the number of people who've been crying for the past few months for the FO to make a big move, to quit being cheap, well here it is and guess what?! MORE WHINING!!! If you dont see how this move makes sense allow me to explain it. We got the best LT in the NFL. If you don't agree please name one who is UNARGUABLY better than Peters. I don't care if the man gave up 12 sacks on a team where his supporting cast was suspect and his QB wasnt mobile. If it werent for McNabbs strength and ability to move I guarantee he gets sacked at least 10 more times last season. Peters came at a good price, yeah we gave up the 28th pick but think about it this way, would you rather have a 27yr old 2 time pro bowl LT making 10mil a year or a 24yr old rookie making 4mil a year.

Am i the only sane Eagles fan here? I don't think you guys realize Peters gave up 12 sacks last year, the worst for LT'S in the NFL. Besides that, he's a cry baby who held out of training camp for money on the 2nd year of his 4 year contract. Do we really want a guy like that for 10 mil a year and a 1st round pick? Now we can't trade for Boldin unless we decide we don't need our 21st pick. That means NO MORENO OR WELLS!! What the hell have we been doing all these years drafting o-linemen, you're telling me we don't have one competent OL that could start for us? No LT deserves 10 mil a year, Tomilson, T.O.,Westbrook, etc... etc... even make that kinda money...

First off JohnRipley... The Cards are actively shopping Boldin. So good or not they are willing to listen to offers at this point and Boldin is a much more complete receiver than Edwards or OchoCinco, but he will take a 1st and 3rd and maybe a 5th. He does not have the down the field ability that Chad or Edwards have, but he is a big body receiver who can out muscle d-backs. As much as I would love to see him come to Philly, I would rather keep that 1st and pick up Pettigrew at 21 and then trade our second and a 5th to move into the top 3 of the second round and pick Donald Brown. For those of you who are high on Wells, forget about it. I will eat CROW if the Eagles pick him. He is a serious injury risk and we cannot have that, plus he does NOT have the game breaking ability that so many of you think he does. He can't handle a large, quick, and agressive d-line which was prevalent last year during the Big Ten Conference games (when he wasn't out of the game for injuries).

we should pick Pettigrew in the first and donald brown or cedrick peerman in the 2nd rd then deffense for the rest of the rounds unless britt or nicks at wr are available in 3rd round if we get pettigrew o my god no deffense will even touch d mac this year and d-jax and curtis will have career years and westy and weaver will too hey booker may have 1000 yards with that line

we will now have one of the best o-lines in football, now lets hope Andy uses it more than 12 times a game. even with the players we have on offense now without any upgrades we should have a top ten offense with this line.

man i have to give it to the FO for this one. we had a need and they got it done. i would rather have a young proven vet then spend a high draft pick on a guy who could possibly be a huge bust. at least we have a guy who we know can be a great player. i can only imagine wat b-west can do now with 2 young HUGE tackles and an actual true fullback the sky is the limit

I know everyone is excited about this trade and so am i but in my opinion the Eagles shouldnt stop here. Now that you have secured McNabb's blindside why not go out and get him a solid playmaker to throw the ball too. yes, make the deal...sned your first and a third to the CARDINALS FOR ANQUAN BOLDIN!!! he s one of the best youg, physical receivers in the game and perfect for the west coast system, not to mention he is a warrior who goes to war for his teammates. he is a classy guy who would could just about put the Eagles in the NFc championship not to mention, dare i say...THE SUPER BOWL. tell me what you think

Excellent trade!!! Much better than using both 1st round picks to move up in the draft to take an unproven rookie. This guy can open holes and pass block. The Eagles should have a good enough OL to do whatever they want...run or pass. Now let's hope we can upgrade the blocking at TE and get a nice RB. Real classy post Strikeking. Clowns like you are what give Philly fans a bad rap.

Ok before I start let me just say F the people who run this website for not letting me log on with my old account, and F them for making me go through so much GODDAMN red tape to get a new one.Now to the business at hand.Great F-ING trade the eagles made to aquire Peters. Were going to have one tough o-line for a long time. Now onto the draft. I would really like to see the eagle pick up either Pettigrew, wells, moreno or brown with the first pick. With the second pick I say pick up kenny britt, he's a big physical reciever with good hands.I can't wait til the draft.

i dont need to bring up is stats....its purely his age that stops him from being an eagle...they want a young team...i dont know why people are making a big deal over boldin either...i know hes big but hes only 6'1''...i mean if we go after boldin we ite as well trade up 4 crabtree...yet i think we do need aa WR some time soon to replace curtis since hes getting old...WR isnt a pressing need at all really yet if there was a star available i say take em

and adrew short i 100 percent agree that there are more pressing needs on this team than wr but what i disagree with you is callin out chad "ocho cinco" johnson now your telling me that if the eagles traded for him you'd still be callin him out like that i dont think so he's one of the better proven wr's in this league and if we got him that would be amazing and we could probably get him cheaper then any other big name out there and dont try to bring up his stats from last year b/c if you were being forced to do something that you really couldnt stand or be around would you be able to give it your all no you wouldnt no one would so long story short if we get chad johnson, braylon edwards, anquan boldin AWESOME if not then i trust the FO in the draft im not worried

yo brian 1974 If the cardinals were dumd enough to take a 2nd,3rd &5th for Boldin he would be on any one of about 20 teams right now. While I'm not one of the guys panicking over the WR position, I do agree that Boldin is worth trying to get, but I also trust the FO not to overpay. So if we don't get him thats OK. Maybe we're better off keeping our picks and drafting Pettigrew. (we might need to trade up a little) Anyway I just love our big beefy O line. welcome to the 2010 super bowl champs Jason

Awesome deal we got for Jason Peters. I am Excited! Now I am more confused with what will happen at #21, the player I would like to see the most at that spot would be Knowshon Moreno, I know its has been proven that you can get great running backs in later rounds, but rookies who had an impact last year taken in the first round had a significant role on their team, including felix jones, jonathon stewart, and chris johnson. I think knowshon is exactly we we need in our backfield to complement Westbrook. Both have the talent to be a feature back. If moreno is not there, it is obvious we would take pettigrew, but what if neither are there....????????

Now we're talking! I posted a comment a few weeks ago and said we should get Weaver and trade for Peters. Check and check! The next part of that comment was a trade of our 2nd, 3rd, and a 5th for Boldin and picking up Moreno, Wells, or Brown with #21. E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles!!! Can't wait to see what else we do.

Pettigrew sounds great and all but I think we have a good TE already who can potenially be GREAT, if we let him,....if anything get a WR or a RB.....i say WR to shut up everyone who wont shut up about a #1 reciever because there is great RB talent that will be available... but I really think getting Moreano will make last years "Suprising Playoff" run a "Sure Nightmare waiting to happen" for any contender. There is no reason why we can't believe this could be the year... the FO seems to think so... there actually spending money
