I've Got The Fever, And I'm Loving It!
Confession time: I'm not welcome in many places by many people right now. My wife can't stand me because I am constantly on the move in the house, because I don't want to go to bed and sleep, because even when I sit down to eat dinner I've got one eye on the computer screen waiting for news to break. My kids, well, I hope they don't notice too much that daddy has gone over the edge and only asks about school and how their day was this week because it is routine. They don't say much anyway, and I'm really not listening.
The gang at work doesn't want me buzzing around their desks talking and blabbering and eating any junk food they have nearby. They have enough on their minds. Everybody is busy. I have the attention span of a flea. I work at my desk for 20 minutes, get up and walk around and pester whoever dares look my way, walk downstairs and eat and apple or a cookie or drink a bottle of water or sip a soda. I read the papers, every one I can get my hands on, and then I get back to my desk and then I do it all over again 20 minutes later.
My mind is everywhere, and nowhere, and in one place: The Eagles.
My friends don't understand this feeling. Some of them are Eagles fans, and some of them are really into this team, but they don't know what is happening in my mind that is working overtime and in my body that is 1,000-percent adrenaline.
I've got Eagles Fever, playoff fever, NFC Championship Game fever, and I couldn't be happier about it.
I'm writing this from the comfort of a reclining chair, flipping through the channels on television (I've settled on Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure for the moment) and I'm eating pretzels and spinach dip and, honestly, I'm having a blast.
Sleep isn't an option right now, because when I lie down and try to close my eyes, I immediately start dreaming about Donovan McNabb throwing touchdown passes, Brian Westbrook squirting through a hole created by the offensive line and the defense making another big play. I hear Eagles fans in my brain, cheering, screaming, in love with their football team. My heart is thump, thump, thumping. The hours spent in bed are restless ones. I toss and turn and look at the clock and hope daylight comes quickly so that I can get up and go to the gym and work out the nervous energy that is pulsing through my veins.
Wake up, work out, go to work and feel the buzz even stronger. And get one day closer to Arizona.
I've gained 15 pounds since Thanksgiving. No lie. For the first time ever, as I step on the scale for the fourth time in a day, I weigh more than 190 pounds. I don't care. Who cares? I'm working out twice a day, I'm eating constantly, and I am heavier than ever. It's stress, but it's happy stress and I hope this lasts forever.
When I'm driving to work -- and this is full disclosure -- I'm tuned into Howard Stern. No sports talk for me. Not in the good times and not in the struggling times. That 25 minutes each way from suburban Philadelphia to the NovaCare Complex is my lone respite. That is my time to breath deeply, enjoy the drive, open up the sun roof and feel the cold air bounce off my face.
To be here, to be only days away from another NFC Championship Game, is a blessing. It is a special moment, and it is something all of us should pause to have and to hold and to enjoy. This is the game that, from 2001 through 2004, I'm afraid to admit, because almost routine. The Eagles made it to four straight NFC title games and, yeah, there were times when I thought it was going to be this way all the time. Not every year, of course, but often enough to feel the love and to one of these days reach the Super Bowl and win.
And after that magical Super Bowl experience of 2004 -- and that day in Jacksonville, with all of those incredible Eagles fans in the stands and with all of those people so happy and looking forward to the greatest win in franchise history -- the crushing reality of the loss hit home so incredibly hard. That feeling after a season ends -- and you know what I mean -- is the most hollow feeling of all. The next season seems so far away, and the prospect of starting all over again, for those few hours and days, is so dreary.
So there was an agonizing few seasons after the Super Bowl. An awful year in 2005, with high drama, with ugly confrontations, with a team being pulled apart at the seams. In 2006, the Eagles had a spirited sprint in December and then won a playoff game before the year hit the wall in New Orleans, as the Saints trampled the Eagles defense and a fourth-down conversion was called back and Andy Reid decided to punt and, ugh, what a painful loss.
What about 2007? A transition year, as it turned out. McNabb worked his way back from the knee injury that felled him the season before. The defense turned a corner and showed some great progress toward the end of the year, which ended 8-8. Momentum? Sure, some thought. Others figured the Eagles had plummeted to the bottom of the NFC East.
Nobody, and I mean nobody, expected this campaign to go the way it did. Up and down the Eagles went until the bottom fell out at 5-5-1. And, let me tell you, the times were tough with this football team in this football town. The critics wailed. The fans voiced their opinions. Loudly. It was hard to tell which way the Eagles were headed -- into a season with a meaningless December and the calls for wholesale changes throughout the team? -- and then Thanksgiving Night rolled around and, somehow, it all changed.
In a way, as I recall, it started with the fans. They showed up that night at Lincoln Financial Field and were into the game from the very start. They didn't boo and they didn't razz and they didn't sell their tickets and they didn't give them away to friends. They came and they were great. And the team was great, too, starting a sizzling stretch of 6 wins in 7 games.
This thing didn't turn around in the snap of a finger for the Eagles. They marched from one week to the next and won football games and got back into the playoff picture, and then they had the clunker against Washington and then, one week later, enjoyed the most incredible regular-season day in franchise history when all of the planets aligned and the Eagles lined up for their finale against Dallas with a playoff berth on the line.
The rest has been history. Three wins later, the Eagles are 60 minutes away from Super Bowl 43. There is a lot of work to do between now and Sunday, and the Eagles know they have to play their best game of the season with the stakes the highest they have been in 2008-2009 to advance. The coaches are entrenched and the players are just now digging in.
So are we. All of us. You. Me. Everyone. We all have the Fever. I'm looking forward to more sleepless nights, more pacing, more daydreaming and more nervous twitches. The tension builds and the excitement rises.
I'm going to enjoy every moment, and I'm going to savor it. Four teams remain in the NFL, and the Eagles are one of them. It is a feeling we all look forward to in those long, hot, awful days at Lehigh University, when the sweat is running down our backs and we are eating the same plate of pasta and sleeping in the same dorm room and waking up for more the next day.
Don't take this for granted. Not for one minute. Appreciate what the Eagles have, what we all have. Your favorite team is alive, breathing, well, still in the game for the grandest stage in all of sports.
The clock ticks. I'm up and moving again, looking for something to get me through the next hour. Pass the spinach dip, please, and if you aren't using the remote control ...

Dave, I know how you are feeling. I am SO EXCITED about this Eagles team and how they are playing. As an Eagles fan for all 24 years of my life, I have never been so pumped about our team. This year's team just feels so special. As a dedicated college student and gym rat, I having a hard time getting the Eagles off my mind and focusing. I am just trying to past the time between each game and focus on the other things in my life, but it is so hard. I just want to be at this site browsing the message boards and tuning into Eagles Live. Go Eagles!

Continued from previous post....Here, no one has even showed up yet for the game even thought it sold out in 6 minutes - More Eagles fans than Cardinals fans again? I don't think so-their new stadium has attracted a lot of new fans-it is gorgeous. But, even though there is a lot of excitement here for their team and most people think the Eagles will take it, the city is not over the moon the way we are in Philly or in my new home of Pittsburgh, where it would be the LEAD STORY on the news, not just one story during the sports segment (the way it is in Phx). So, the Eagles should take this, but please don't give us any bad karma by making fun of the Cardinals and their pathetic history of losing year after year. They are a very dangerous team being coached by a brilliant offensive mind (Wisenhut) who Pittsburgh wished was still with them and the home field will actually really be there for them this time in a sea of red, not green...... So, let's hope for a great game and Go Eagles!

Originally from Philly, but lived in Arizona from 1986 until just last August. My only Cardinals game was when the Eagles and Cardinals were still in the NFC East together. The poor Cardinals never had a stadium (until now) and played that game I saw at the ASU football stadium. The whole place was awash with green, not a single Cardinals fan there. The Cardinals' owner, Bill Bidwell, has been one of the cheapest owners in NFL history, even charging players for drinks in their own locker room. Now, I live in Pittsburgh as of last August and my office is right next to the Steelers practice facility-my corner office overlooks their field that they share with Pitt. We also have cafeteria privileges with them so we routinely go over for meals ($6 prime rib)and the players and coaches couldn't be nicer. They were very relaxed and confident about the Ravens game (they have the swagger of a Superbowl champ) when I left town last week for a business trip in guess where? Phoenix!

I HAVE THE FEVER TOO. IM SO EXCITED THIS ARTICLE IS ME ALL THE WAY. I LIVE IN BALTIMORE SO THERE ARE NOTHING BUT RAVENS FANS AROUND, SO YOU CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW IT HAS BEEN, IN A WAY I WOULD LOVE TO PLAY THE RAVENS SO WE CAN BEAT THE CRAP OUTTA THEM. THIS IS THE GREATEST FEELING, MY TEAM MAKING IT AND OVERCOMING ALL WE DID TO GET HERE, WE DESERVE THIS MORE THAN ANYTHING. WARNER ALREADY HAS A RING AND MVP, RAVENS HAVE A RING, AND THE STEELERS. THIS IS OUR YEAR TO SHINE AND WHEN WE DO IM RUBBING IT IN EVERY1'S FACE. I CANT WAIT.

Wuuuuuuud up PHILLY FANS across the globe. I have to admit here ladies & fellas, I'm crazy excited about this upcoming game & heres why. Yes, I understand that the Eagles aren't playing the same Cardinals they did on Thanksgiving BUT neither are the Cardinals playing the same Eagles team. The attack is coming throught the air in this game & I've got confidence...ALOT of it in our 2ndary. Who here can honestly say that after watching the Eagles stop 2 of the top 5 RB's in the league that the front 7 can't handle their own. Who here knowing the Eagles are the more experienced team come playoff time & after watching the Ars-stompin we put on them when we had our own ups & downs. The Cardinals are facing a B E A S T of a team and dey betta git der popcown ready! E A G L E S BABY!

I am a first time poster, so I hope that this out of character move doesn't jinx my pre-game routine. I have been in love with this franchise since my dad and I would rake leaves on Sundays and listen to Reesey on the AM radio. I have to admit that earlier this season, I convinced myself that it was time for McNabb and Reid to move on. And then an amazing thing happened--Thanksgiving Night, watching the Birds with my father for the first time in almost 3 years--it's indescribable. We both looked at each other and asked "These are the Eagles, right?". I have never been more thrilled to be an Eagles fan! But this one is for them. Not for us--as many of us were at the chopping blocks with axe in hand--but for Westbrook, McNabb, Andy Reid, and especially Warrior X himself. Let's let them hear us in Glendale with voices free from doubt, cheers rife with passion, and the belief that this team will not lose. E-A-G-L-E-S..EAGLES!!!

I have got a HUGE FEVER HERE! 110 degrees at this point if I had to measure! My superstitions are kicking in and until kickoff I can't help wondering which championship game this is going to be like: the Rams game, the Carolina game, the TB game, or our favorite the Atlanta game. I don't like seeing Warner again. I feel like this is our Destiny to take this but then again I felt that way in each of those other years. I am just trying to do the same things I did before the Atlanta game to see if it works again. I would love for the game to begin and we take the early 21-3 lead. That would be awesome but I don't think I can picture a score in the first, second, or third quarter that will make me relax and think we have it under control. We just have to get this and take the Super Bowl and put Dawk, McNabb, and Reid headed to the Hall Of Fame!

Bleed 'Cuse ORANGE and Eagles GREEN! Unfortunately, 'Cuse didn't show up tonight @ G'town. Their D was soft-- giving up wide open looks all night long (and G'town knocked them down). And then SU was missing all sorts of good looks (layups and even a dunk) around the hoop. I won't even get started on the missed free throws (gonna be a problem all year I'm afraid). I just hope Andy Rautins knee is alright asap. Back to the Iggles! I can't wait 'til Sunday...

I am a first time poster. I grew up an Army Brat with my dad stationed at Ft Dix when I was 8 years old. Born in '65. Love the Phils, Sixers, Flyers and Eagles. I sat quietly alone on my couch in peacfull bliss as Lidge got the last out. My wife hates sports so the TV volume had to be inaudible. I literally cried as one family member after another called from around the country to congratulate me for my patience finally paying off. I live in Missouri and am in the Army. Being a fan from a distance and attending away games of all Philadelphia sports my entire adult life, in hostile crowds, I can say that there is something special happening that is real. Whether someone is for or against the Eagles, people are giving them their respect as you speak with them. If any Eagles players read this, understand that this year it is yours to take. It's just a matter of will and determination. E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles!!!!

Oh yeah, sorry Dave, AMAZING ARTICLE. I believe you are speaking on behalf of ALL EAGLE NATION with this article. Flirts with brilliance. But that's what's great about you. You are able to put into words what we feel and can't necessarily formulate into words. FLY.

Like many of you, I am a die hard Eagles fan that lives outside of Philadelphia....Long Island, NY to be more precise. I fell in love with this team back in the Ron Jaworski era and never stopped cheering for them. Although we have been to the big show in recent years, this year just feels different. I cannot explain it. I echo Dave's excitement and anxiety. I'm imagining plays inside my head...seing the Birds executing in every aspect of the game and moving on to the Super Bowl. I am relishing in this moment, enjoying every day and am on top of the world. 3pm Sunday is so far away right now. The knots are beginning to form in my stomache...This is the best place to be!!! Just wanted to share that with you all!!!!! I BLEED EAGLE GREEN!!!!! GO BIRDS!!!!!

I have the ANSWER to VICTORY in arizona. READY? PRESSURE KURT WARNER so the receivers dont have time to run their routes. That's all. We dont even have to necessarily SACK him. (Those are nice, though). Just PRESSURE HIM to throw the ball early or late. Don't even give Fitzgerald OR Boldin time to run the pattern. The game WILL be won on the defensive front. Oh, yeah, keeping their offense off the field as long as possible will be a nice bonus. I know this sounds so rudamentary, but I really dont think they have anything for us with the run. If we are clogging up holes trying to get to Warner they won't have a running game anyway. GO BIRDS!!!!

Dave wow this article is amazing. as if i needed to be more fired up for this weekend. my family thinks im crazy and threaten to send me to a strink when i talk like you just did about the eagles. they dont understand how much this football team means to me, and to all eagles fans. ive been taking midterms this whole week but i cant consontrate on any of them. On the corner or every test i write "Eagles, always believe!" in my green pen. my one teacher is a steelers fan and instead of answering the essay question on the test i wrote her a essay on why the eagles will win. My basic point was becasue we want it more, because we have heart and teamwork and trust eachother and it's a speical thing. my friends think im crazy and theres not one true ligit eagles fan in my school although there all jumping on the bandwagon now. i take that as disrespect because if you cant endure the bad you dont deserve to support during the good! Eagles for life! This is our time !
