Reid: Cardinals Are A Dangerous Team

Andy Reid's traditional day-after press conference, this one after an impressive 23-11 Divisional Playoff win at New York, contained the slightest bit of variation from his typical remarks.

After rattling off the post-game injury report, Reid usually includes some variation of the phrase, "We look forward to the challenge of playing (insert next opponent here)" in his opening statement to the media. It's not rare for Reid to use the exact same wording on his cliché multiple times per week.

But on Monday, Reid, perhaps sensing a growing sentiment that the Eagles could overlook their NFC Championship Game opponent, never used that sentence. He threw reporters a bit of a changeup, willingly or not.

McNabb
Before the Eagles make plans for Tampa, they must beat a tough Arizona team

"It's important now that we turn our focus to Arizona and what a great job they have done, really throughout the season and into the playoffs," Reid said. "(It's) a completely different situation than when they had to travel on a short week after a tough game on Thanksgiving to come and play us here."

Indeed, the Eagles handled the Cardinals 48-20 on Thanksgiving, a win that gave the Eagles new life, life which they've carried on to the NFL's final four. But if not for Philadelphia, the Cardinals could be the hottest squad in the NFL right now.

They're coming off of a trouncing at Carolina, when they were told they couldn't win on the road and especially on the East Coast. Now, they'll host the first NFC title game in franchise history, and fans bought out University of Phoenix Stadium in six minutes, according to the team's Web site.

And, as Reid stressed, the Eagles are playing a different team. The Cardinals' defense has come to life against two of the NFL's most challenging rushing offenses. They're applying pressure to the quarterback and forcing turnovers. They're showing an increased commitment to running the ball, and quarterback Kurt Warner is making it a point to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers.

In short, they're doing everything necessary to win a championship.

"To be honest with you, I didn't think we got their best shot when they were here," Reid said. "You already know they have a good coaching staff. I mean, they have one of the finest staffs around in schemes and so on, guys that know how to win games. They are playing very good football right now."

So Reid assures that he knows to give credit where credit is due. And he, of all coaches, would know not to take an NFC Championship Game for granted. Not only that, but he's faced Warner in this situation before – on the road, one game from the Super Bowl, and one the Eagles lost at St. Louis during the 2001 season.

If anything, Reid knows Warner's dangerous. At this point, he said, that should be enough for his players to focus.

"You're talking about a two-time MVP of the National Football League. I always tell this story every time that we play him, but I miss the guy that I had as a rookie in Green Bay. He was so shy back then that he was afraid to get in there and call the play," Reid said. "What a great job he has done of maturing into this phenomenal quarterback, and he's going just as strong now as he was back then."

So Reid's message to his players was obvious after Sunday's win. Based on record, they had cleared their biggest hurdle to Super Bowl XLIII. But if the Super Bowl matchup was based off of regular season standings, the Eagles wouldn't be in this position.

And neither would the Cardinals.

"(I told the players) enjoy the moment right now," Reid said, "but be ready to put your mind on to Arizona. You're looking at a good football team."

NOTES: The Eagles made it through the Giants game relatively unscathed, but one area of concern involves wide receiver Jason Avant, who suffered a hyperextended knee. Reid said Avant was "moving around OK" on Monday.

To examexpert: For someone who's a Cardinal's fan to come here and talk crap is ridiculous. You've only had 27 seasons over the .500 mark since 1920 and you haven't won a Division title since 1975. You do the math... Then talk about wanting to hurt McMabb...yeah, that's classy. Puts you right up there with Cowboys fans. I wonder if it just happened to slip your mind that when McNabb broke his ankle in that game he had one of the best games of his career and spanked the Cards. And don't make excuses for the a** kicking you got on Thanksgiving Day, again sounding like Cowboys & Giants fans. I doubt you're a true fan anyway. You're more than likely a bandwagon jumping closet fan, the kind who doesn't show the teams colors until the actually have a chance of doing something. You failed your exam and are far from an expert.

I think Exam is one of those bandwagon Cardinals fans who doesn't know what he is talking about. McNabb had his best career game when the Cards broke his ankle a few years ago. I would know. I was in the 700 level at the Vet for that. Their first round game agains ATL was almost blacked out in ARZ bc they couldn't sell out. Now that they have gotten somewhere, all of their fairweather fans are coming out of the woodwork. At least they won't have far to go when we send them packing on our road to Tampa.

Yea, I agree with all the comments about exam. You need to become a real fan before trashing other peoples teams on their site. Our birds have shown what they are capable of doing and we have a great chance of going to Tampa on Feb. 1. Thanks for a great end of the season eagles. Go all the way!!!!!

"We are going to swallow Mcnabb and our dline is going to injure his ankle again like we did in 2002." You mean the game where he threw four touchdown passes and won with one leg?

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!! Heres to us getting a win on sunday! I like this matchup, and I dont think it will be as easy as thanksgiving. The thing is, to win in the playoffs, especially on the road, you need to have an underdog mentality. That is, you need some degree of fear that gives you nervous energy, so you can give everything you have. I cannot see the Eagles having a letdown because they did not come this far to lose to a team that, historically, has been a worse loser than Detroit. Also, the Falcons and the Panthers underestimated this team and paid dearly.

Another NFC championship game appearance. Wow. How about the EAGLES. As far as EXAM comments. Well he is like half the so called EAGLE fans. No class. Anyway. Our defense is playing awesome.WE have the best QB in PHILLY history and he has many more good years in him. So all you KOLB lovers sit back and enjoy number 5. He fed all you haters a shut the HELL up philly steak. Do your thing 5 your the best. Team is really playing well. Whats really scary is how young our defense is. This is going to be a great defense for years to come as long as JJ is there. Well Good luck EAGLES and lets beat them cards. May the best team win.

I second that TOBY. Great comment especially the flying south part lol I almost woke up my girl reading that comment trying not to laugh to hard. I hope our BIRDS do recognize that it's time to head that direction because it's getting pretty cold and nothing less than a Championship can keep them warm. LOL

Well we are here who would've thunk it? I am embarrassed to say that I didn't, because of what it was gonna take for our beloved team to get to the playoffs. Make no mistake about it the Cards are a formidable opponent and must not be looked past on the way to the big dance. Did the Cardinals play tough teams throughout the playoffs as did our birds maybe not (a rookie QB under prepared Jake Delhome let alone a defense that is as great as ours). If our Birds can be another kind of Bird this Sunday on I would love for them to be a HAWK a Ball Hawk that is, or a pack of hungry Vultures swarming Kurt bout to feed on their prey. The next key is establishing holes for Westbrook in the run game and keeping him involved no matter what. Finally, our receivers need to keep stepping up and McNabb just needs to keep having fun, hell the whole team just needs to have fun it's worked up to this point.

Lets go eagles! Believe in Green everyone. one more game and we are in the big one. We beat cardinals before we can do it again. Even if they are a different team. They didn't play a defense like ours against the falcons or the panthers..force some turnovers; get first downs; score in the redzone and we got this game. God Bless everyone

Lets not forget mcnabb used Arizonas facilities to practice at the beginning of his career. I expect him to have one hell of a game. We worry too much about Warner and Fitz. How bout THEM worrying about 8 probowlers. The Falcons and the Panthers have similar offenses. Phillys offense can beat u in so many more ways. And we have the best corner in the playoffs right now. We contained AP, Jacobs and co. what makes commentators think James and Hightower is jumppin off? Enter 36

I find examexpert's comments interesting and welcomed. Overconfidence has hurt a number of teams in the past, ourselves included, and Arizona should be concerned about it as well. But, rest assured that the green birds will certainly be represented in Arizona's sacred stadium. I am confident that I am far from being the only Eagles fan with tickets. We have some of the most dedicated traveling fans in the NFL, and enough of a presence in Arizona to even have Fox News filming our bar last Sunday, taking some of the spotlight from the very team residing in the state. I won't talk trash or claim a premature victory, but the Cardinals should be concerned with the same overconfidence many of their fans are currently displaying. I am not guaranteeing a victory, but I am certainly hoping for one. And I'll be at the stadium cheering my birds on in person. Go Eagles.

Haven't you guys been the laughing stock of the league for years now? Delhomme must have thought his guys were wearing red because he threw it right to you guys! D-McNabb won't do that. He's a future hall of famer and he'll prove it to you cards fans sunday! GO EAGLES!!!!!!!!! p.s. if you do remember like doncraw said we beat the hell out of you guys even on a broken mcnabb ankle!

Examexpert talks like he knows what it's like cheering for his team in a NFC Championship game... oh wait first time in franchise history. Congrats to you buddy your team made it here once and they have played well in the playoffs. Remember this sunday because in 10 years after this game you'll be referring to it as "that year when we did well" as you watch another 4-12 abomination known as the Arizona Cardinals. Bunkley and Co. on the D-Line are gunna eat the O-line alive just as they have been the past month. Our linebackers will be flying around blowing people up and our secondary will be picking off passes. GO EAGLES!

examexpert must be a cowgirl fan, we are used to haters that know absolutely nothing coming to our website. just shut up and jump on the bandwagon. Prepare for the best DEFENSE in the NFC to show everyone how to pressure and demolish an opposing QB. Warner will throw at least 2 INTs and probably fumble at least once. Leinhart should be taking snaps in practice this week, he probably will see some action after they scrap Warner's body off the field, and Trent Cole's cleats. The Eagles will be flying south for the winter(Tampa)EAGLES 28- CARDS 17.

examexpert , your comments about hurting McNabb are disgusting. Both teams are to be respected since no one gave either of these teams a cold chance in hell of getting anywhere, least of all to the play offs.Everyone should be cheering both of these teams. Have some respect for yourself and be a real fan for your team. GO EAGLES!!!!!!

doncraw i was thinking the same thing. i think the examexpert forgot that part of the story. much props for both teams getting to this point. this game is going to be totally different than the game on Thanksgiving. the D has got to get to Warner so that he doesn't have time to get his passes off. on "O" we have to stay balanced and move BWest around in the formations to keep their Defense guessing.
