Can Westbrook Continue This Season?

For fans that have been speculating on whether or not Brian Westbrook has been playing hurt recently, Westbrook removed all doubt.

At his weekly press conference on Wednesday, Westbrook said that, at the very least, his ankle and knee are still bothering him and will probably continue to do so until he gets time to rehab during the offseason.

"I'm pretty sure it's not going to be completely healed, this week or next week or whenever," Westbrook said. "It's one of those situations where you try to get it as good as you can get it on Sunday and then play through it."

Westbrook started slow against the Bengals and their 25th-ranked run defense, gaining just six yards on four first-half carries. In the second half, however, he had 10 carries for 56 yards, so maybe it's just a case of getting the ankle loose.

Westbrook, though, said his second-half success was due to some adjustments the Eagles made at halftime.

"We did a couple different things in the run game," Westbrook said. "We ran more directly at them; we didn't run as many outside zones. The play selection was just a little bit different."

Even though he's still banged up, Westbrook, who didn't participate in practice on Wednesday, believes he can still help this team get back on track. He added that he's constantly talking with head coach Andy Reid about how his injuries are progressing.

"I communicate with coach and let him know how I'm feeling, what's going on," Westbrook said. "We communicate during the week and we communicate during the games as well. I try to give everything I have and go out there trying to help this team.

"It will be coach's decision, as well as mine, if I'm not helping this team, to get somebody else in there. I'm still trying to do everything I can to try to help this team win. I'm trying to go out there and compete. Get healthy enough to compete on Sundays, that's where it's at really."

Westbrook also said that the team has all the faith in the world in Reid's play calls and that his track record speaks for itself.

"As a player, you go out there no matter what play is called, run play or pass play, and you try to effectively go out there and make it work," Westbrook said. "You don't really question the coach as far as 'Why is he not running?' or 'Why is he running?' or 'Why is he throwing the ball?' or whatever. You try to go out there and make things work. Coach does a great job of studying film and seeing the defense's tendencies so we always defer to him as far as the plays; the calls. We believe and we have confidence that he'll call the right plays, whether it's a run or a pass. For me, of course I want the ball in my hands, but I don't call the plays; I don't make those types of decisions. I do have confidence in him and faith in coach that he'll make the right decisions for us."

Relating to this story, I would almost consider shutting BWest down until the last two games of the season. Then when the last two NFC East games come up it's a question of if there is even any point of putting him back out if he is anything less than 100%. Personally he's too important to this team to risk in what is likely to be a coast into another non-playoff year. Now relating do docdre1326 comment, everyone is hating on McNabb because he is playing terribly this season. When it comes down to it is he playing any better than what Detroit of St. Louis has to offer? He got out played by Ryan Fitzpatrick and he's a Carson Palmer seat warmer. I watch every Eagles game religiously and for that matter have NFL Sunday ticket so I watch A LOT of football. McNabb is a little bit of athleticism and mobility away from playing arena football. He is a TERRIBLE leader showing very little drive/determination on the field as of late. And the fact that he is the most successful QB in recent history means JACK **** if he isn't winning right now. So please think rationally and pry those lips of DMac's back end. If he continues to play as poorly as he has for the majority of this season I don't see why you pay him $10M to keep him around!

Here are some comments from NFL Film's analyst Greg Cosell. He studies the same game footage that the NFL coaches watch and these are some of the problems he sees with the Eagles Offense: "Eagles play breakdown: 60 called passes / 18 called runs, 77% pass and 23% run – Cannot play offense like that in the NFL" "McNabb again showing a lack of timing and anticipation, Not comfortable unless he sees his receiver break open – That limits consistency" "Eagles are a zone running team that does not handle back side run throughs well at all – Again a function of the fact that their OL does not possess the necessary attributes to run a zone scheme: They lack quickness and lateral movement ability" (This is why they had some success running it in the second half like Bwest said) "TE Smith has not shown the ability to beat LBs one-on-one, That’s a significant problem for the Eagles offense" "Eagles WRs have a difficult time with isolation routes on the outside, They do no win one-on-one matchups with consistency" "McNabb is consistently late with his throws, Can get away with it at times because of the strength of his arm" "The right side of the Eagles OL – Jean-Gilles and Runyan – are very slow and plodding; It limits what the Eagles can do, especially in the run game" (So why do they keep running sweeps to the right in clutch moments?) "Eagles offense has been reduced to the occasional big play, like McNabb’s movement and throw to Baskett for 57 yards in the third quarter" "Once again there was no rhythm or continuity to the Eagles offense; They just run individual plays, they do not build off concepts of a fully dimensional run / pass approach " "Right now, at this point in the NFL season, the Eagles are running a pass-heavy offense with an average QB who lacks timing, anticipation and accuracy, and an average group of receivers who scare no one, which is very evident from the coverage schemes played against them – Even Jackson is not dictating coverages, or tilting the field to his side"

Off topic but this is for all the haters showing how much they dont watch football, I think Mcnabb shouldnt be getting all this criticism just because of him not knowing the rules of OT, he is the leader of our team, not to add he is the most successful quarterback in Eagles recent history ,no one will be a better fit in Philly than him and that includes Kolb at least for right now. Everyone bad talking him for something so stupid is going to drive him out of here and leave us with the same success of a Detoit or St. Louis team ,and then everyone will be talking about how we should have never gotten rid of Mcnabb. What we should be doing is analyzing the coaching staff that picked the plays in earlier games that put us in a position where a tie last week was such a big deal but if we were 8-1-1 no one would even care that DMac didnt no about ties in the NFL so Mcnabb had one bad game ,so what, play calling has been off all year ,so who should we really be roasting .In all fairness if DMac would have played a little bit of Madden he would have known about the OT rule.On a positive note it saids alot about a team that can have four turnovers in a game and not leave with a loss .So be careful because you dont know what youve got till its gone. GO EAGLES!

It's obvious and I am glad he (West) finally came clean. If you DVR the games and look back at them, you can see how long it takes him to hit the hole. He is a slasher, not a pounder like a Jacobs. He needs some space. With the injuries, it takes him to long to hit the hole. Rest man, Coach, put in Buck.

I agree, we should let Westbrook rest a few.

There's this guy named Buckhalter that we can actually give the piggy to every now and then. Funny thing is, he's even ran pretty well with it when he's been given the chance. I think now is a great time to dial his number, and give #36 a breather.
